Yosemite random reboots on macbook mid 2012

Well I've read thoroughly all the posts related to this kind of issue and it seems it affects a wide range of devices. Either mac minis or 2011 macbooks and so on.
I would like to explain my experience and ask for any advice available. I am experienced with computers and OS's, even though I would not call myself an expert, but as an engineer I possess a certain amount of knowledge. So there it goes.
TL;DR at the bottom
Macbook pro mid 2012 13". Default 4gb memory installed, I added a Samsung EVO 830 SSD in 2012 when I bought it, never had any problems with it.
After a couple of weeks after upgrading to yosemite (november '14) I started noticing the macbook resting on login screen after a reboot. No crash report, no message visible of any reason. As I was installing some special software to do some work related to a lab I was working at the time, I thought it was software related. MS Word and Excel often crashed and I had a couple of problems with other programs. Then it started doing it while I was working, so I decided to check things out. The system freezed for some seconds - 1-2 minutes and proceeded to reboot. Sometimes a hard reset had to be performed.
I decided to perform different installations with different options in order to identify the problem:
Reinstall Yosemite from recovery mode: same result, random reboot, no specific app in use, either Xcode, Safari, or just resting idle with just finder.
Format disk and install yosemite applying time machine backup: same result, random reboot, no specific app, and so on.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing the same main software installed previously: same result, random freezes and reboots.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing essential apps (mac app store only): same result, exactly the same result.
Always with the latest OS version available, and with TRIM enabled and disabled, to discard issues with it. PRAM and SMC resets all along.
During all the testing, the console has not shown any crash report or kernel panic related to the event. After every reboot, console would not show anything special before the boot_time line.
After looking for solutions on different forums, I noticed a pattern on some cases that implied a wake on lan or a handoff, or wifi issue. I tested on different networks, disabled and enabled all options commented, with no effect.
Entering
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq 'n Cause: -' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'
on terminal 90% of the time returned errors -128, and some -112 or -2, but they would not be logged to every freeze, just some of them. By the time the
As they may indicate a hardware error, I decided to proceed with the warranty.I bought the Applecare extension when I bought the computer (expiring this summer) so I talked to Applecare about the issue. As there is not an official Apple Store in my town they pointed me to an ASP in my city. They noted all the issues I commented above, gave me a case number to deliver to the ASP so they would have all the information.
I brought the computer to the ASP, gave them the case number (which they totally ignored, the employee seemed oblivious to what a "case number" was) and expected them to find the error. As I noticed the freeze could be sometimes forced via waking up the laptop, I made them a demo. I had ran already the apple hardware test and any hardware tests I was aware of. Etrecheck came out without issues or anything worth mentioning, so I thought they might have specific apple tools to identify hardware error.
They told me they could not find any error on the computer, but that they found errors in the SSD, swapped it with one of theirs to test and no issues found. Good, I thought, at least they found the issue even though all tests run on the SSD by me did not show any trace of it. They charged me 25€ for the service as the SSD was not part of the original computer. As I had been experiencing issues for some time I did not care. I asked them for some kind of report to check the error to provide to the SSD manufacturer, Samsung, as they offer 3-year warranty on SSD's and it had not yet expired. The report said "errors in disk", plain and simple, I asked to talk to the technician for extra info, but he could not remember if it was "corrupted sectors" or something else.
Contacted Samsung, sent my SSD in, and in 4 days I had a new (refurb maybe) SSD same model same size at my door. During those 4 days I reinstalled my old original HDD. As it had a few miles on it (using it as external disk) it was really slow and sometimes it would freeze but the whole system was always dragging, so it could be also failing. Worth mentioning that when swapping disks I noticed the ASP had messed up the position of the small screws on the back of the computer. They did not seem to know there are 4 shouldered screws and 3 regular ones.
I put the new or refurb SSD in, clean install and do some testings. First day everything ok. Proceed to install software. Seems ok. After a couple of days the first freeze and reboot appears. After a couple of PRAM and SMC zaps, events seem to be reduced to a minimum. Even though the system is not completely stable, and I am not quite satisfied with the uncertainty of the freezes (in the middle of a presentation is not the best moment to have one), as it's freezing 1-3 times per week I consider it reasonable.
Time goes on, freezes start to appear again. Sometimes while booting, sometimes on login screen, sometimes on heavy usage sometimes on idle. I still follow all threads related to similar issues, in case a fix appears. All sleep / wake / wifi on - off on sleep tests have been performed.
Now the issue seems to be reduced to two kind of events: random freezes and reboots, and errors while booting. None, and I mean zero of the reboots or freezes has ever had a .crash or any system diagnostic reports related to the hour or even date when the freezes took place. EVER.
While booting, it crashes and I have to hard reset 2-3 times. When freezing, 30% of the time it does not reboot, and gets warmer than idle state but cooler than under heavy load.
I usually zap pram and smc and then it boots normally. But I should not have to be doing that every time I turn it on.
I know its a long post, but it's something I have been following for 5 months now. It's not that I am unaware of different options to solve it. Zapping seems to be the way to go, but still the random freezes interrupt workflow and provoke loss of data.
TL;DR: same freeze and reboots as other people. No discrete GPU to relate it to. Default memory installed, SSD model working on 10.8 and 10.9 with zero issues. All software installation combinations tested. ZERO crash reports on console related to the hour or date of the events. Shutdown causes negative codes, ASP cannot find the issue.
Considering bringing it to Genius Bar, but undermines the purpose of a ASP and if they got the same tools they will not find the issue either.
Appelcare expires in June. Any options I am unaware of? I would relate it to the specific model of SSD under Yosemite if I was the only one experiencing freezes and reboots, which I am not.
Thanks you

Boot into Safe Mode. If the problem ceases then you need to remove Virtual Box and the software that installed com.bluecoat.kext.bckd 4.4.1f20. If this does not fix the problem then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

• Macbook MID-2012 crashing every day (Kernel Panic)

Hi!
I hope I'll find some help here.
My new Macbook (MID 2012) is crashing everyday. I read that this might be a RAM issue (maybe due to the fact that I installed 16GB 1600Mhz of Crucial), but this would really surprise me because I only got this issue after some weeks of the RAM replacement. In some cases I need to restart my MB a couple of times to get it run again. Also pretty weird, I got a similar issue when using Ableton Live, my trackpad an my keyboard freezes (computer continue working), and then I need to restart it a couple of times, and one of the two USB holes isn't working anymore (and to get it work again I need to reboot it again). For information : I have an USB hub with a MIDI keyboard connected, an external HDD, an USB Key, a Dongle, a Keyboard and a Mouse. I'm also using an external Audio Card, connected to the second USB hole, and a 27'' Screen. I really would like to reproduce theses crashes, but it's always happening at some random moment (not necesseraly due to a RAM overloard or so) Maybe some issue in my configuration.... Any thoughts ?
Thanks in Advance !

Before you do anything, finc and remove the following kernel extension:
com.avira.kext.FileAccessControl 1.0.0d1
...it could be anywhere but your root System>Library>Extensions would be a good place to start. If you can't find it, download the free "EasyFind" from the Mac App Store and search for "avira." Once you move the kext (to a Desktop folder, for example) reboot and see if you're still having kernel panics.
Good luck,

Sorry there's a mistake in the sentence!
i mean:

• Macbook (mid 2012, 9,2) has very poor performance since the day I bought it (less than 2 months ago)

Problem description:
My macbook is extremely slow since the day I bought it (which was less than 2 months ago)…Came preinstalled with Mavericks and 4GB of RAM. Upgraded it to 16GB hoping that would help, but that did very little…then upgraded to Yosemite. That just made it worse. Formatted the whole thing and installed clean Yosemite. Still, every time I right click, I get the rainbow loading icon and it hangs. Every time I open any file, or click any app, it hangs for a few seconds, again with a loading icon. Every time I play a song on iTunes or even VLC for that matter, it stops multiple times, every few seconds. Feels like it’s “buffering” while I’m playing a song off my hard drive. It’s been bothering me for too long now…Any idea what the issue is exactly?

• Running out of storage on my macbook mid 2012

I had to delete a Yosemite partition I created on my mid 2012 macbook pro because the 16gig available filled up fast.
I check my HD and it was almost full to capacity, it shows I had 2.2 TB of photos and 1.5 TB of audio.
I don't know if this photos and music kept adding each time I sync my iphone or each time i log on to Facebook.
Anyway I would like to FREE UP THE SPACE can someone tell me how, and would I need to have 3plus TB of external DH to do this, or what??????

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

• MacBook Mid 2012 - Slow even after upgrade

Hi All,
Previously I was having issues with my macbook pro - the system would not sleep when the lid was shut. It would over heat.
It was generally super super super slow. I can't emphasize this point enough!!!
I waited and managed to live with it for a while until the latest updates were released by apple. The sleep issue was resolved BUT the
slow sleep issues still remain.
I am quiet frustrated at this point. Every thing is laggy (ex. when I try to open a new tab in Safari, scroll down a preview file, or ANYTHING, it just freezes for 30-50 seconds).
I have looked at multiple previous posts, tried different proposed solutions, but nothing has helped.
If anyone has any suggestions - please do share!
Farid

Farid,
please list the proposed solutions which you have tried so far, so that we don’t propose them to you again.

• Temperatura macbook mid 2012 y Mountain Lion

Hola,
Hi,
month and a half ago I bought a Macbook pro 13 ", the problem was that when you upgrade to Mountain Lion, my computer is experiencing problems with temperature, the fan keeps ringing, when before it did not. Am I going to my own or is normal? If a general problem, Apple plans to fix it?
a greeting.
Detalle de la temperatura / Temperature details:

The iStat temperatures that you're showing - and your fan speed - is completely normal. The screenshot doesn't show anything unusual at all: 2000rpms is the normal fan speed.
Can you post a screen shot taken at a time when your fans are excesivly noisy? The fan speed can get over 5000rpms and, depending on what you're doing at the time, that speed can be 'normal' as well.
Post back,
Clinton

• How do I get apple to fix my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) screen, which has always ghosted?

Since I bought my MacBook (mid-2012) the screen has had ghosting problems. Like, since day 0. At first it wasn't really a problem. I wasn't doing graphical work; I didn't need "pixel perfect." But, then I started needing to spend time in Photoshop again. The ghosting made it a frustrating and error-prone process.
My screen ghosts in about 30 seconds of being on the same image for any visible region. So, basically, if if I work at zoom 100% for 30 seconds, using the brush for a few quick strokes, then zoom in, I have to wait another 30 seconds for the false-shadows and hues to go away. It was unusable. I was busy, so I just started doing graphical work on my linux workstation with Gimp. I was too busy to get it repaired.
Finally, a year or so ago when I had some time, I brought my computer into the Apple store. I told them of my ghosting issue, along with an odd sound from the fan when the CPU was pegged. They held it overnight. They claimed they did some diagnostics and cleaned the fan. I thought, well, I don't think that will fix anything, but I signed off. The Applestore staff are very friendly. It's difficult to say, "wait, no -- this is ****** up," to them.
Of course, that fixed nothing. Why would it? I went back to being busy. Then, recently, I had more time again. I brought my laptop into the store. Since Apple had just issued a notice about my year's laptop having graphics issues, I thought, "finally, they understand there is a problem!" They took my computer and shipped it out to Texas, aware of not only the random buffer-level (graphics card) pixelation, but also about the ghosting. It came back with a new logic board and heat sink. Again, this didn't seem likely to fix it, but I didn't object at the store. They were so friendly there.
I bring it home. Unsurprisingly, the ghosting issue was unresolved. This fantastic retna screen is functionally useless for me when doing graphical work. On my Apple. A computer that lauds the creative power of graphical designers. Really?
In no world this okay (see video) for an Apple product that I spent several thousands of dollars on, with the expectation that I could do graphical work. The challenge I heard both times from Apple employees -- "how long were you on the same screen" -- is an utterly absurd question. The video answers it -- about 30 seconds. But, in any case, you can't bill this as a high resolution screen for graphical designers and artists with this problem. We spend time on single screens, fussing over single pixels for hours.
I'm willing to assume that my screen was oddly defective. And, that this was not indicative of a common fault in this particular model. But, it demands resolution. The screen needs to be replaced. I'm tired of explaining that to the Apple store.

• How do I upgrade memory on my MacBook Pro 2012

I installed Yosemite and now my MacBook Pro (2012) has slowed dramatically. I have two memory slots, total 8GB.

Hi,
You should have enough RAM with 8gb. There may be other reasons your computer is slow.
You can upgrade to a maximum of 16gb. Visit the OWC site for more info.

• Mid 2012 MacBook Air Troubles (Random Reboots & No Camera)

Hello, I'm hoping somebody can help me out. I have a mid 2012 Apple MacBook air that I am having problems with. Ever since I bought this laptop from my friend, it has randomly rebooted during sleep mode, and the FaceTime camera has not worked. I was told that water has been spilled on it at one point, but I have went over the entire computer and do not see any sort of damage. Because I was not having any luck getting it to quit the rebooting, and because the camera would not work, I purchased a replacement motherboard and battery.
The new parts arrived today, and I quickly installed them. I was instantly having the same exact problems. The computer will still reboot when I close the lid to put it in sleep mode. It instantly starts rebooting after about 2 to 3 minutes. And it will continue to reboot over and over until I reopen the lid. In addition the camera is still not detected, and I have double checked under the system properties that it is not showing up under the USB tab. I have cleared the PRAM & SMC, still no changes. As a last ditch effort, I decided to reinstall OSX 10.9 Mavericks as a fresh install. No go...
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get this thing running properly? I bought it because I wanted to use it for some home-video editing, and in its current condition I don't feel that it is trustworthy. The only things left that I can replace, would be the display or the thunderbolt daughterboard. I already previously had replaced the SSD with a larger 256 GB, and I tried swapping out the wifi card as well. I'm banging my head against the wall here, and really want to be able to use this computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

BRPopilek wrote:... Does anyone have any thoughts? ...
Unless you get the answer you need here, I would contact Apple MacBook Air Support or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
Apple Service Technicians have access to all special tools, test equipment, parts, and proprietary data needed for efficient repairs. If cost is your issue, you can ask for an estimate before they proceed with any needed repairs.

• Mid 2012 MacBook Air Yosemite Slow Booting and Old Boot Screen

Hello Guys,
I have a mid 2012 MacBook Air 13" and I had installed public beta of Yosemite on it. Now I am running OS X 10.10 (14A388b) and I have problems on the boot. On all the other macs, I saw that the booting screen is black background and a white Apple logo on it. But on my mac, the booting screen is same as Mavericks and for the first 5-6 seconds, the Apple logo doesn't show up. And the mac is booting very slowly. Also, Continuity and Handoff are not working properly. What might be the problem?

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

• Macbook Pro (Mid 2012 15 inch) crashes randomly

Hello Apple Support Community! This is my first writeup here so be patient with me.
In August 2012 I purchased my 15 inch mid 2012 MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB Hard Drive. For the first 2 years, everything was fine.
Fast-forward to July 2014. I started school at a local university and brought my laptop with me nearly every day. (It got moved around a lot) Also, I had some money saved up and decided to purchase some more RAM for my computer. I purchased 2x4GB of PNY RAM and installed them. A few days later, a curious problem began to show up. Every night I shut down my Mac, but now every few shutdowns it would give me the little spinning wheel and would never shut down. I figured it was not a serious problem as it did not happen that often.
My problems didn't end there, however. During a software update to 10.9.5, the computer froze while shutting down with the same symptoms as above. I had to hold the power button to shut it down, and when it turned back on after the update, my bluetooth was gone. After an SMC reset, my bluetooth was back.
At this point, I was getting a bit worried about my Apple software and decided to Boot Camp Windows 7 onto my hard drive. And then Yosemite came out, so I installed it. Mistake.
Almost daily, I was seeing kernel panics galore. It did not really seem to matter what I was doing, all it had to be was on and it would fail. Windows 7 exhibited no problems when running, so I assumed it was a software issue. About mid-november, I wiped the mac partition of my hard drive and clean installed Yosemite. For about a week, I thought my problem was cured. Then the crashes returned again. I switched back to my factory installed memory thinking that it may have been a bad ram stick. Once again, okay for about a week then crashed again. I put the 8GB back in again because I would rather have a fast and crashy computer than a slow and crashy one.
Also, weird graphical glitches began to happen. On certain occasions, when starting up things like Java or even doing something as simple as going to Yahoo!, the discrete NVIDIA graphics card would activate. Sometimes, it would quickly flash the screen completely white or blue then go back to normal, and occasionally the entire screen would freeze except for the mouse, which would only go away by holding down the power button and resetting. Doing a NVRAM and SMC reset, once again, would work for about a week before it would crash again. Also, when plugging in my hard drive for backups, it would refused to eject the disk. I had to hold down the power button to get it to eject (For most backups, I had to resort to booting in Safe Mode, as Safe Mode would actually eject the disk when I told it to.) These panics are not consistent, mind you. They have happened during start up, once during shutdown, but mainly during low load situations after the computer has been on for a while. Oddly, it is most stable when running at high ram and the fans are blazing during gaming. It has also never crashed when a virtual machine (Virtualbox) is running either.
A couple of weeks ago, it completely melted down. The system crashed, then restarted, then crashed, then restarted, then crashed, then (you get the picture). Completely, panicking at this point I tried to boot into my windows partition. It got to the Welcome screen, but then went black and the hard drive started making a really high screeching noise, at which point I shut off the computer and scheduled an appointment with the Genius Bar the following day.
At the Genius Bar, I told the Genius what was wrong, and after playing around with it, reinstalling the ram, and getting some error messages, he gave me the following diagnosis: A bad partition of the hard drive between Windows and OS X and improperly mounted RAM. (Oddly enough, when we remounted it, the directions he gave were different then those on apple.com). I hooked my Time Machine back into my Macbook, and for a while it looked like the fix worked. No more kernel panics or stalled shutdowns.
A couple of days ago, the stalled shutdowns returned, and today it has crashed twice on me (once in Safe Mode). I'm at a loss. I've checked so many different things from websites that it is making my head spin. I use my computer for school every day and need it to be reliable. Considering that I have only gotten about two and a half years out of a $1700 computer, that is absolutely pathetic. I really would like this computer fixed, but I do not have money just to throw around. Does anyone out there have any ideas? Let me know if you need more details.
Thanks in advance!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
