Yosemite safari bookmarks suck!

I decided to give Safari a try after years of Chrome, since they've changed so much in Yosemite.
But I can't get my head around bookmarks, mainly because Safari does the spinny beachball of death when I try.
It has imported my Chrome bookmarks. I probably have about 10,000 bookmarks all up, sorted in folders that go back several years. On chrome, I have an extension that lets me search them using sensible search ideas (such as "I remember bookmarking a site about 2 years ago, search only old bookmarks"). I rely on bookmarks, and many if not all of the "online" bookmark managers I've tried have all come, gone, and/or never really worked. I'm the sort of person who remembers sites I bookmarked in Netscape Gold in 1998 - I've been exporting and importing these bookmarks ever since.
Safari has decided to throw away icons on my bookmark bar. In chrome, I've shortened all the names of these links to 1 letter because in Chrome I only use the sites' favicon as the identification (I have about 30 sites I regularly reference, so 30 icons). That doesn't seem to be an option in Safari and so the bookmark bar is now utterly worthless.
Safari seems also to have changed the way you navigate deep folders. You click on the icon, wait (hoping not to see the beachball) for the list to open. If you use the bookmark manager, it integrates the list of folders into the list of bookmarks. This differs from Chrome where folders are kept seperate from the list of bookmarks in the folders - which I think is much better for when you want to organise files. Dragging a deep-nested set of links to a shallow-nested set of links in Chrome is simple because you have seperation between the organisational elements. In safari it means drag-scolling up and down the list waiting for folder popping. This is dreadful.
So, are there any exceptional bookmark managers for Safari that can handle date-based searching, find and collapse duplicates, find variations on a url, and do link checking?

  • Yosemite Safari - bookmark add button is in the wrong place !

    Dear Apple just FYI.
The 'add book mark' The small 'plus' symbol at the far lefthand edge of Safari browser window, its in the wrong position. So many errors/mistakes (wrong add book mark) for just going to type in window, one accidentally hits this 'plus' symbol.

Hi Dominic23, I think you misread the post - I'm saying the 'Bookmark' Plus sign has been positioned in the wrong place within browser bar. In his position I seem to hit this plus sign inadvertently almost every other time I go to use the browser field / type web address or search. (In the new Yosemite Safari).

  • After upgrading to Yosemite web icons in Safari bookmark list have disappeared

After upgrading to Yosemite web icons in Safari bookmarks have disappeared. Anybody know how to reset this?

    Hi ..
The webpage icons database may be corrupted as a result of the upgrade.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db
Click Go then move the WebpageIcons.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch Safari.
It may take up to a day for your webpage icons to re populate.

  • How to restore safari bookmarks in yosemite??

This question is answered somewhere... but I cannot seem to find the answer and I've seemingly read just about every article on the topic...
I updated my MacBook Pro to Yosemite last night which wiped out all of my Safari bookmarks (which I use daily) and restored bookmarks from 2 years ago. I tried to pull the bookmarks from my iPhone 6 (which were synced to the current and most up to date bookmarks) but somehow wiped those out and synced them with what is now on my MacBook (now not my iPhone and MacBook have the outdated bookmarks from 2 years ago).
I have tried "iPhone Backup Extractor" and "JuicePhone" to pull the bookmarks from previous backups and that did not work. I've even tried going through iCloud, which I rarely use, and ran into some dead ends there.
Please help, I am at my wit's end. Any help would be immensely appreciated!!

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist. Restore that from your backup.

  • How do I share Safari bookmarks with another Apple ID  in iOS 8?

My husband and I share the same Safari bookmarks, calendar, contacts, reminders, notes.  We've always been able to share tall of them across his devices by adding my Apple ID account to my spouse's devices in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars under settings.  The only thing I do not share is my email on his device.
But with iOS 8, it doesn't allow me to share Safari bookmarks, it only allows me to share my calendar, reminders, notes, and contacts.
We have an iMac with my Apple ID, running on Yosemite; all devices are on iOS 8.

I am having the same challenge. If you find a solution please share it.

  • Safari bookmarks driving me UP THE WALL

I have checked this forum a few time recently, expecting to see people tearing their hair out over this issue... but there don't seem to be any recent posts about it, either here or in the iCloud forum, so maybe it's just me? (There are some older posts that refer to it, but it's only started being a real problem for me lately.)
I use Safari on both my MacBook Pro (running OS 10.10.1 and Safari 8.0.2) and my iPhone 5c (running iOS 8.1.2). I have Safari set up to sync to iCloud on both devices, and until the past few weeks this has worked very well. Now, however, it is a nightmare. (I can't remember whether or not the change coincided with an OS update... it's possible that it did.)
I have a lot of bookmarks, and they're all sorted into a hierarchy of folders. If I add new bookmarks - on either device - they show up almost instantly on the other device too. But they are always added at the top of their list for some reason, rather than the bottom like they used to be. This isn't really a problem, more an oddity. The real problem is with the sorting.
Don't get me started on the lack of an easy inbuilt way to sort Safari bookmarks. I used to use Glims, which was brilliant, but it doesn't yet work with Yosemite, sadly, and I haven't found anything else that does what I need. (There are things that will sort ALL the bookmarks, but I don't necessarily want them all to be alphabetical!) So, since Yosemite, I've been sorting bookmarks manually... but iCloud won't let me do that any more. If I rearrange any of my bookmarks, they always reappear in their original position within seconds. I've tried the obvious solution, i.e.
    1. switch off iCloud syncing on both devices (and go offline as well just in case)
    2. organise bookmarks on Mac to how I want them, and export to html file
    3. go back online & switch iCloud syncing back on on Mac
    4. delete all bookmarks on both Mac and iPhone
    5. keep repeating step 4 until bookmarks stop reappearing
    6. re-import bookmarks on Mac from html file
    7. switch iCloud syncing back on on iPhone
This strategy does solve the problem for a  little while, but has two main drawbacks:
    (a) the same problem recurs every time I add any new bookmarks
    (b) the iPhone bookmarks take ages to reappear, and when they do they're all out of order (and not in folders - the folders are there, but they're all empty and the bookmarks are loose in a random order)
Does anyone have any suggestions, please? All I want to be able to do is to keep my bookmarks synced AND in order! Thanks in advance.

To answer your play in order question you need to figure out the name of the person who is doing the podacast. i.e.) Tim Henson for distorted view. Then you go to "Music"-"Artisits"-"Tim Henson" or whatever and then it will play them all in order.
For your second question did you delete it of your computer or off you iPod?

  • Duplicate safari bookmarks

After upgrading to Yosemite, all of my macs (using 2013 iMac now) have tons and tons of duplicate sets of the same bookmarks, which also seems to be causing Safari to take an EXTREMELY long time to launch.  There is no obvious way to delete multiple duplicates at the same time, but regardless, delete any makes Safari hang for a couple minutes while it reloads the whole mess of duplicates again.
I'm too nervous to even get to my MacBook, iPad and iPhone yet to see what the synced bookmarks now look like on those devices
    1) anybody know WHY this is happening (the many duplicates of bookmarks)?
    2) anybody know how to fix easily enough?

    Ok...
On the Mac open System Preferences > iCloud. Deslect the box next to Safari then reselect it.
On both the iPad and iPhone tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Safari off then back on.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync the data.
By chance, if you have synced Safari bookmarks using iTunes while using iCloud, that can definitely cause a sync conflict. It's iTunes OR iCloud. Not both.

  • Is there an alternative method to sync Safari bookmarks without using iCloud? I am running the latest versions of Mavericks, iOS and iTunes.

Is there a method to sync Safari bookmarks from my Mac to my iPhone WITHOUT using iCloud?
I am running the latest versions of Mavericks, iTunes and iOS.

    Hi Mary ..
Afraid not but if you decide to use iCloud and you're iPhone is running iOS 8, (according to your profile), hold off until you can upgrade your Mac to Yosemite.

  • Why do Safari bookmarks scramble when I sync devices

Whenever I sync my Macbook with my iPhone or iPad,all my bookmarks on Safari become scrambled, and I have to spend some time putting them back into alphabetical order.
Does anyone know how to avoid this happening?

    Hi Everyone!
    ptichkalix, I have a mid 2010 Macbook.
My nephew works for Apple. The advice he has given to me over the years is to always update when Apple releases updates. I am not suggesting you update OS 10.6.8. to Mavericks or to Yosemite, or to update when there is a Safari update. That is up to you, your MacBook's  processor speed, ram memory, and storage size.
What I do suggest is to follow the advice of Drew Reece - back up. And back up on a regular basis.
You can find your Safari Bookmarks: Safari data and settings: ~/Library/Safari/
The tilde (~) character indicates your home folder.
If you update to Mavericks or Yosemite, the ~Library folder will be hidden, but there. You will need to find out how to see the ~Library folder. But keep in mind, Apple has hidden the Library folder to prevent inexperienced users from making big mistakes if the ~Library folder is opened and messed with.
I use my MacBook to get on internet while I watch TV in the den, and to take my MacBook when I get my allergy shots - something to do when I wait. I use my iMac for most of my computer use. I wanted to transfer my Safari bookmarks and my Mail address books from the iMac to the MacBook. The transfers have worked well.
I have also updated both the MacBook and iMac from OS 10.6 to Mavericks to Yosemite. Both run a little bit slower, but at least I have the security offered by the OS updates. My MacBook processor and ram memory is probably very close to the minimum requirements for Maverick and Yosemite, but it works, is fast enough for my use.
However, I have noticed it takes about ten seconds to open a saved Excel or Word file.
    My MacBook:
    OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 DUo
    Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DOR3
    Storage 250 GB SATA Disk
Yosemite Safari, Mail and the other Apple applications work like a charm. However, PowerPC applications like Appleworks ARE NOT supported in Mavericks and Yosemite.

  • How can I restore icons to safari bookmarks

When i upgraded to Yosemite ,I lost the icons on my safari bookmarks. How can I restore them

    Hi Barry,
It should have pick-up the icons automatically from the database that Safari creates
but it looks like Yosemite may have failed to do so for some odd reason.
You may have to re-visit all the sites you want icons for again for Safari to rebuild it's database.
Probably not what you want to hear. In my option Apple is releasing too many OS releases and
not letting the current OS mature before it goes off on one of it's OS release rampage.

  • How do I delete ALL Safari bookmarks?

I am currently using a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and Safari 5.1.2 and would like to know how to delete ALL Safari Bookmarks.
I have selected the various titles under Collections and selected all the bookmarks on the right and deleted these.  However, not that there is a Bookmarks section on the left just as there is a Collections section.  The bookmarks under this Bookmarks section are the one's I can't seem to delete all of without selecting each individually.  I believe these bookmarks might have been what was imported from my PC bookmarks when I converted.  However, I would like to be rid of them and there are a lot to remove.  It would be very nice if there were a less time consuming way to accomplish this task.  I've gone to find this plist file that I've seen mentioned in the support archives and I don't know if I don't understand the structure of Macs well enough but I can not find the plist to remove.
Please help!  I don't understand many acronyms and such that responses typically include so if you have a solution for me, please be very specific.
    Thanx

don't know if I don't understand the structure of Macs well enough but I can not find the plist to remove.
    Quit Safari.
Click a clear space on your Desktop. You'll see Finder top left corner of the screen.
From that menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Safari
That will open a Finder window for you.
Move the Bookmarks.plist file to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari.
That should remove all the Bookmarks from Safari.
If you want to re import those Bookmarks at some point, with Safari open, from the menu bar click File > Import Bookmarks.
BTW... when you are searching the Finder there are two libraries. One is root the other is user.
The    ~ (Tilde) character represents user:   ~/Library
    No tilde:  /Library     is root

  • How to find my Safari bookmarks and passwords without opening safari?

    Hi!
I have a big big problem!
I had a system crash-thought I could recover via TimeMachine and oops there was an error and it turned out impossible. I had a clean install but my problem is that I really needed my old data- I can get it all from Time Machine as I can browse it just like as if I actually had the old system.
I copied the folder "default" from adium into the newly installed adium and there were all my contacts login details etc...
But I have no idea where to find my Safari bookmarks. I really need them. I also have trouble recalling some of my passwords which were remembered by Safari. Please tell me which files should I replace from the old system into the new system in order to retrieve my bookmarks. Thanks in advance for any help:)

    trelek2 wrote:
    That doesn't help.
why? Have you tried it? what happens?
    Where should I look?
    I need those bookmarks...
Copy the directory /Users/username/Library/Safari from the old disk to the corresponding location on the new one. The file with bookmarks is bookmarks.html from that directory.
However, I think Safari passwords are stored in the keychain. That would be in the directory
    /Users/username/Library/Keychains

  • Hi apple user. I have lost all iPad safari bookmarks. Tried hold home button with sleep button but it doesn't get back my safari bookmarks. I also have reset without erasing my iPad data but still doesn't work. Help me get back my safari iPad bookmarks.

Hi, I have lost all iPad safari bookmarks. Have tried reset without erasing data and hold home and sleep button together but when go to safari all safari bookmarks still lost. Is there any case help me get back my iPad safari bookmarks ? Currently my safari is hanged, can't surf webs or anything. I saw the safari tab on iCloud is on, but I don't know using iCloud. Please help me get back my iPad safari bookmarks. I have contact Apple but could not set chat session. I have my Apple ID registered same with iCloud, also same during the time I have all iPad safari bookmarks lost. My iPad never synced on computer since I bought it with set at local store. Please help me get my iPad safari bookmarks back, thanks.

Hi, I quitted Safari and press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously unti the Ipad turn off and on with the logo Apple appears but it has hanged on and fixed to the point. I do it again hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously and the Ipad turn off and on again with the Apple logo but it still is hanged on the same point. I have do it a few more time, it still hanged to the same point for few hours with no change (like picture):
I think my Ipad is fault now. I guess I must connect it to the computer with itune, or something. So my case is this: at the moment everytime I hold the Home and Sleep buttons the Ipad always off and reappear with the Apple logo and be hanged on (like the pic), and I need restoring my Ipad Safari bookmarks... so I guess I need using Itune or something to get back the Ipad then using Icloud or blah. Please guide me for the step, Im not sure if connect to PC, if any that my Ipad data would lost, or is there anyway that I also can get back Ipad Safari Bookmarks after connecting to PC, also the how using Icloud. There is no Apple store or service store in my country so I think I must do it my self. Feel free to share your guide, thanks.

  • Lost Safari Bookmarks on MacBook Pro after Sync with iPhone

I set up my iPhone to use MobileMe to sync with my two macs and other iphone (wife).
I lost all the Bookmarks on the computers within Safari.
    1. What do I need to change to avoid this in the future?
    2. Is there a place my Bookmarks have been automatically saved so I can restore? I have 'Time Capsule' and MobileMe.
If there is a way, can you explain?
    Thank you

Don't know why that happened, but Safari Bookmarks are stored in ~/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist (the ~ is shorthand for your home folder). You can use Time Machine to restore them.
