Yosemite screwed up my iMac

So I decided to upgrade to Yosemite straight from Lion (Pls don't ask me irrelevant questions like why I didn't go through maverick, etc etc, I didn't feel the need to)
Now with 4GB of RAM, I have probably the slowest, the most frustrating computer on the planet,
1.  It's painfully Crawls, not even walks,
2.  Keeps dropping the WiFi connection randomly and more important, keeps FORGETTING my WiFi connections when it drops them, so I have to add the connection manually every single time.
3.  When I right click on a file, to chose 'Open with', it takes forever to 'Fetch' the list of applications that i can open the file with, sometimes even failing to do so, so I have click somewhere else and then right click again,
4.  When I open a folder, it takes forever to draw the icons and while its getting them to appear, the finder window is frozen,
5.  Everything, EVERY THING, crawls, opening any non-apple app is a nightmare, trying to open a microsoft office document completely make the iMac un-usable for like 3 - 4 minutes, Don't even ask about Google Chrome,
6.  I don't even use Apple Mail, which has been said to be the cause of the memory leaks and high CPU usage,
7.  Even the internet access appears slower compared to my windows PC,
8.  When I try to drag a window, any window, across the screen, it NEVER happens on the first try, because its frozen, specially apps like photoshop, chrome, evernote, etc.
Now I have tried almost ALL the solutions popular on the internet, including turning off the bells and whistles by reducing transparency, changing the dock pop-up effect, rebooting into safe mode, fixing my disk permissions, resetting my System Management Controller (SMC), resetting my PRAM, replacing the Network Configuration & Preference Files for WiFi, switching to G band, Creating a New Wi-Fi Network Location with Custom DNS, whatever i could find on the internet, including this forum,
Everything except a clean install, but Nothing. The machine I have here is NOT the Mac I used to have and like. It *****.
This same iMac was what i used to call 'Awesome' just before this update when it had Lion.
Even TEXTEDIT takes like 30 seconds to open and shows a spinning wheel for like 10 seconds, for god's sake.
Why is Apple always so Dumb, Arrogant, Un-responsive to user's problems, aren't they making a **** lot of money already from us ? Can't they hire better brains who'll not push out updates before they are tested across hardware ?
Or at least some PR staff who listens to user's feedback on their own forums and responds, not in copied-pasted dumb text from their website though, instead of sitting around in their offices playing on their iPads ?
If an OS is SO resource-intensive, why push it to older models, do they want to make everyone buy more RAM and newer hardware every time something new comes along ?
I'm regretting trying this update. Could anyone please advise what's the best way out of this mess ? Would a Maverick clean install be good for a mid 2010 intel iMac ?
Hardware: 3.06 GHZ Intel Core i3, 4 GB RAM,
Apps most used: Chrome, Photoshop, Evernote, Textwrangler, iTunes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.

  • Is anyone else having Config error 16 issue when trying to start PSE 12 or Premier Elements after Mac upgrade to Yosemite 10.10 on iMac

Is anyone else having Config error 16 issue when trying to start PSE 12 or Premier Elements 12 after the Mac upgrade to OS X Yosemite 10.10 on iMac. I have had a number of issues with software and things after upgrading to OS X Yosemite 10.10 and even 10.10.1.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled both PSE 12 and Premier Elements 12 a number of times and everything goes fine until its ready to launch and then you get an error message. Numerous uninstalled and reinstalls don't removing the problem.  Strangely enough  PSE 11 still appears to boot up and I never owned Premier Elements 11 so I don't know if it will start. I thought with Apple dropping its Apeture software and greater integration of iPhoto and Apeture files into Lightroom 5.7 all would be harmonious between these two players. Im not sure where Adobe wants us to go it recently removed the plugin to allow you to update files from LR to Adobe Revel, whats up with that. I now own two version of Adobe software that no longer work with my Mac and now way of uploading pictures from Lightroom to Revel. Needless to say I am pretty reluctant to sign on to a subscription of Creative Cloud with long term financial obligations when I can't even get my current Adobe software to work independently much less integrate with Lightroom. Frustrated with it all!

Get rid of 'put disks to sleep when possible' and you may see a dramatic improvement (not necessarily a cure).
That specific problem is a multiple-Processor (including graphics processor) problem, where one of the processors lost track of whether it should be responding to interrupts. You may have a Hardware problem.

  • Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch, 4gigs of ram, Intel C2D perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), will update to Yosemite, slow down my iMac?

    Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch,
    4gigs of ram,
    Intel C2D
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    HDD 320gig's
iMAC is perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), with no lag, and no sluggish working, Multitasking is AWESOME (i have PC, with 8gigs of RAM, GeForce GTX570, etc etc), but i must say this MAC is running way better   a way way, faster and I am Loving it!!! I am using it for making music, and video editing, i am Using Final Cut Pro x, Ableton 9, Logic Pro x, and bunch of other apps and it is working perfectly, and i am so shocked how machine old like this can do that stuff better than any PC i had, and not to mention that I use more time on iMAC than on PC, i use Windows PC just for occasional gaming, but that is like 10% of time, so i use my MAC in 90% of time.
So, enough of my iMAC. I am wondering if I update it to Yosemite, will my iMac slow down, and not continue to work like on Mavericks? Will it become sluggish and unresponsive? Will it affect reliability and stability which  have on Mavericks? And will update delete my personal data (tons of Logic, Ableton and Garage band projects, and tons of Final Cut Pro projects), Applications (because I have some apps which is hard to find these days)...
I know bunch of you guys would tell me to backup my data, but i don't have External hard drive (they are pretty expensive in my Country), I have some friend who could borrow me External HDD, but they have their data on it, and they mostly use windows.. I did not use Time Machine yet, but i think probably it would format HDD on Macs partitions, so, i will do it on my own guys (don't judge me about that guys please)..
So if someone could answer me that, i will really appreciate that.
    Thank you, and best Regards!!

I recommend you upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB for good performance with the apps you're using. Also keep a minimum of 25-30 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal system and application performance.
The maximum RAM a 7.1 iMac can address is 6GB, the OP can keep one of the 2GB DIMMs and then add a matching 4GB DIMM. If  the OP decides to do this, please only purchase from Crucial or OWC at www.MacSales.com.
However as described on a 8 year old iMac, I'd stay with Mavericks and then when considering upgrading upgrade to a more up-to-date Mac.

  • I upgraded my OS from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 straight to Yosemite and now my iMac will turn on but will only go to a gray screen?

After I installed Yosemite on my iMac, it will not restart. I goes to a gray screen and stops. The cursor moves around but the screen is blank? I went from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 straight to Yosemite, without upgrading to Maverick. Could that be the problem? And can I get it back to previous?
    Thanks, Phil.

10.8.2 is no longer available. You can't install what you can't find.
The download you found at Apple is an update file for 10.8 or 10.8.1 users and will not install without those versions being present.

  • Unable to install Yosemite on mid 2011 iMac 27"

OK, so I have tried to install Yosemite on this mid 2011 iMac for two days now and I get the exact same error message every time:
An error occured when extracting files from the archive AdditionalSpeechVoices.pkg. Abort the installation and reboot.
I have formatted the harddrive, reinstalled the original OS using the Restore via Internet option (the Mac works perfectly with Mac OS X 10.7.X) and then I try to upgrade to Yosemite via App Store and the error is back.
Any ideas regarding what might cause this problem?
    TIA

If you find you'll need to replace a faulty module(s) I recommend you do so from Crucial.com which has an excellent reputation for providing top quality and compatible memory modules for Macs.  They are guaranteed to work and are warranted.  Otherworldcomputing.com is another recognized, reliable source for Mac memory.

  • Downgrade or reinstall yosemite update on 2008 iMac?

My wife enjoyed her Early 2008 iMac until she needed to use a Windows only accounting program, so we got her a windows machine - which she wanted to throw out the windows. So, I thought I would try VMWare with windows which lead to updating her iMac from (I think) 10.4 and upgrading the ram from 1g to 4g. Had to purchase a 10.6 disk, then upgrade to yosemite which can run the current VM. Well, as many have mentioned, the system now runs very slow - even without the VM. It is no longer a nice machine to use. So i'm trying to figure out what would be best:
1: Do a clean re-install of yosemite - sometimes a clean install can work much better.
2: Erase the disk and have it install from backup - this would only fix fragmentation issues but not require re-install of applications or setup.
3: Do a clean re-install of 10.6 and don't upgrade any further, either forget the VM thing or use virtualbox or an older VM.
Unfortunately, any version between 10.6 and 10.10 isn't an option because Apple prevents me from getting those versions unless I got them previously, which I find quite annoying!
So, since each of these options takes some time - what would be the thoughts on most likely option to fix the yosemite update speed problems?
    Thanks!

    Nothing obvious in activity monitor.
No cleanup or anti-virus ever installed
    Ram maxed out at 4g.
So I think the suggestion is to try Yosemite clean install?
By the way, I got the "can't do it" about the older versions from apple on this forum.

  • Accidentally reformatted the Mac Yosemite OS in my iMac Late 2009 model

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem as mentioned above.
I installed windows using bootcamp last night on my iMac, the because I was on the phone, I accidentally reformatted the mac partition (Yosemite OS), so currently I only have the windows when I tried to open the iMac.
I tried the shortcut keys to do internet recovery, but my iMac wont simply allow as it is late 2009 model.
Can you help me on how can I re-install again the Yosemite os and use the remaining disk capacity?
    Looking forward to your response.

    Hi Eric,
    THank you so much!
I am currently downloading yosemite in my macbook and the will create a usb bootable version of it.
So after this, i will just plug this in my imac and then a bootable installer will pop-up?
Can i just delete all the partition including this windows 7 and start a new one
will you guide me on the right process?
    Looking forward to your response.

  • Stuck at login screen after Yosemite Upgrade - 2013 27" imac won't recognize keyboard or mouse

I installed yosemite without issues on my 2013 macbook pro retina so decided to try it on my 2013 27" imac. Install went fine until I get to login screen. Wireless keyboard and mouse won't pair so I can't type in password. Connected generic wired keyboard and mouse and still won't recognize it.
However, when I restart it I can hold down option on keyboard and it will bring up list of hard drives to boot from (I also have windows installed with bootcamp) so I know imac pairs the key

So the iMac was purchased by my father in 2011 shortly before he died.  I thought, why not check if he also purchased Applecare at the same time? Turns out he did! So after calling and trying to reset the SMC, etc. with it not working the Apple tech told me to turn it over to an authorized repair shop here in Louisiana.  Hopefully they can fix it.

  • Not Happy, Yosemite killing my new iMac

I have a three month old 21" iMac with 1Gb and 8Gb DDR memory.
I updated to Yosemite several days ago and it's dreadful. Everything I do I get a spinning beachball
I've given it a few days to settle down but doing anything on it is frustrating.  I've bought this for my business (with Parallels & 8.1) and it's sucking the life out of me.
I'm not too technical but I've found the activity monitor and it shows that pretty much all of the RAM is being used.
Surely 8Gb of ram is not enough these days?  After spending £1,100 on a computer there's no way I'm buying more RAM....
Can anyone suggest what is killing my machine?
    Thank you in advance

thanks, i've ran the eltrecheck and here are the results

  • Is Yosemite install different for iMac, MBP and MBA?

I recently downloaded Yosemite using my iMac.  I then copied the "Instal OS X Yosemite" app from the applications folder to an 8Gb USB stick. I then upgraded another iMac successfully. I then tried to upgrade my MBA but the instal failed with '7 minutes remaining'. I left this for 36 hours - nothing!  Having contacted Apple support I finally had to resort to an OS reinstall. (Good to have backup files in the cloud).
I was told that the install app was machine specific insomuch as the iMac, MBA and MBP sport different hardware. (Bit slack of the developers, I should have thought)
Having at least one of each, seems I now have to d/l around 16Gb to satisfy upgrade across the board. Good for my ISP but takes a lot of time with my bandwidth.
Is there a better way to achieve multi-machine/type upgrades given they are all part of the same family?

Apple Support are mistaken because there is only a single version of the OS X Yosemite installer.
I've seen many threads in this forum concerning the installation process stalling, but I'm afraid that I don't know what causes this problem or how to resolve it.
The recommended and most efficient method of installing OS X Yosemite onto multiple Macs is to create a bootable USB installation volume.

  • Help! I screwed up my imac

I have been trying to duel boot Mac os 10.4.11 with Mac os 9. It is a iMac (Early 2001) indigo. I did something stupid I used sheep shaver to make a system folder you’ll know why in a minute. Now I installed Mac os 9.0.4 (the sheep shaver max along with my ROMs) on a dmg so I could get the system folder later.
When I put in my Mac os 9.0.4 CD it gives me a floppy with a ? on it same with my 9.2.1 cd now what I did was take the sheep shaver system folder put it on my HD went into my startup disk and set it to the sheep shaver system folder only Mac os 9.0.4.
I am an extreme idiot because now I look up and see my Mac runs a minimum of Mac os 9.1 and its trying to boot on 9.0.4 so I get a folder with a ? And then switches to the finder I need help I tried holding CMD-x but it doesn’t work Help!!!I need to get on an os to switch the start up disk can I change the startup disk in open firm ware
    also heres some more info
Have you tried holding Command-C to force it to boot from the CD?
Yes when I do command It completely ignores the cd and goes to the folder with the finder ? then after a few seconds changes to floppy with a ? then this is weird goes to load mac os 9 I get the happy mac and then it goes to the mac os nine loading screen and I acept it is the extensions off one and get a error message saying
    "Sorry, a system error occurred.
    unimplemented trap
To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down shift" and then there a restart button in the right corner and a time bomb in the left I get the same thing with just holding down "c" but no folder with the finder and then a ?
Have you reset the Parameter RAM?
Yes it start doing whats above after I did that
My mac os 9 cds are retail

I also tried c it did not work either and I tried holding down options and all it show is the cd when the cd is out it shows nothing I can hear the Hard drive and it worked before I put the os 9 system folder on it so its not fried and x does not work either
Have you tried booting from the cd after the option hold down?
Perhaps you trashed your boot information? I do not know how to fix it.
Have you tried disk first aid?
You will need to boot from you installation disk. I have not done this, but here are some hints:
    see this article
    Or from mrtotes article :
Boot from the OS X Install disk and from the Menu Bar choose Disk Utility. Then run "Repair Disk" and "Repair Disk Permissions" on your hard disk.
