Yosemite Server - login from older clients

I am lab-testing network login to server 4.0.3 running on a brand new mini. Only using OD, on the mini server, with home folders stored (for now) on the internal HD.
Login from a brand new Yosemite client seems fine but from older clients on 10.6.6 it is painfully slow - 3 or 4 minutes.
Is there anything that springs to mind that I have set up wrongly?

I need to add - that the same 10.6.6 clients log in very quickly to our old 10.6.8 MacPro server

  • Is there a multi-authoring solution with RH Server apart from RH client?

    Greetings:
    Is Adobe looking to price itself out of the HAT market?
    Just got the pricing on RH Server 8 ($2000) and then another $1000 per RH 8 client (as I write this I am still verifying the pricing, because they first told me each user will need a full RH Server 8 license, meaning $10K for 5 authors). For five authors, that's $7000 (unless its $10,000 ;-), and about 99% overkill on the multi-authoring side, since we only need one RH 8 client for management and publishing, and a simple WYSIWYG for additional authors is all that is needed, and indeed the learning curve for RH versus a WYSIWYG makes this paying a lot of money for a huge training burden & support headache. Is this for real?
    I'm researching HAT's and I've got the same or better featured server/multi-author scenario going with HelpServer for $4000 (unlimited additional authors), Doc-To-Help Enterprise for a mere $1500 (also unlimited authors), and Flare complete with Feedback Server and 5 X-Edit author/users for less than $3500, not including support packages. Considering the fact that there is virtually nothing RH does the others don't, and quite a bit the others do that RH does not, I have to wonder -- why is there no simple to learn, inexpensive to buy WYSIWYG (something like Contribute) for multi-authoring in RH Server?
    Since it's all HTML, we could in fact go with Contribute, but direct changes would not be reflected back in the RH client files. That's about the only thing that would have to be automated beyond a Contribute-like WYSIWYG, or what am I missing?
    Just occurred to me, could have Contribute users make changes to RH shared directory, then they could be published from there. Hmmmn.
    Anyone have a workaround or other solution here?
    Shame, shame, Adobe.
    regards,
    Steven
    "I am but an egg."
    --Stranger in a Strange Land

    Hi Steven
    Dems the breaks I suppose. One way past it would be to have one RoboHelp Server license and one RoboHelp Office license. Then have the other authors simply use Microsoft Word to maintain their content. The person that uses the RoboHelp Office (Client part) could then import and link the Word documents managed by the other authors. If you worked that way you would only be looking at a total outlay of $3,000 instead of $7,000. But I suspect that you might get a better deal than $7,000 if you worked with Sales.
    Keep in mind that RoboHelp Server relies upon the content created by RoboHelp. There is no "limited WYSIWYG editor". All it does is provide reporting as well as project merging. There is nothing about it that lends itself to a simple WYSIWYG editor that provides a window into the server content.
    I cannot speak to the other tools you cited. Maybe they do work in that manner and maybe they don't. And maybe you are misunderstanding the actual capabilities. I cannot say.
    Additionally, it's helpful to keep in mind that the way RoboHelp works today was initially designed and maintained by the folks now known as MadCap. Because of that, I'd be surprised to find that the MadCap products operate in a totally different manner. Maybe they do. Adobe acquired the product by virtue of acquiring macromedia. So they didn't design the way it works. Although they have enhanced it. I see no reason to shame Adobe.
    Can you expound on your claim that " there is virtually nothing RH does the others don't, and quite a bit  the others do that RH does not". What ios the "quite a bit" that others are doing that RoboHelp isn't? RoboHelp seems fairly competitive with its feature set to me.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Connect & Update a Server DB from remote Client

    I'm a novice as far as Java Technologies. I would like to create a Java program and publish it to a remote client using Java Web Start. What I need to be able to do is update a SQL Server database, located on my local server, from the remote client. Can anyone tell me if this can be done? And if so, how to do it?

    Don't know if SQL Server as a pure jdbc driver supporting net clients (you should ask in some jdbc forum). Anyway you can use for sure jdbc over odbc. Everything else is a pure java/jdbc problem.
    Any question about Java Web Start & JNLP?

  • How to update server files from a client?

    I'm writing an application that has a "load" button to read images, and a "save" button that writes images (using ImageIO.write(currentImage,"png",outputfile). It works fine offline, but when I run it as an applet on a webpage, it doesn't write the file. Is there a way I can make this work online, or does this really complicate things?
    Thanks!

    yes, that's the situation. i'm wondering if it's
    possible to transfer files back and forth between
    client and serverYes, it is possible.
    My recommendation would be to store the images in a BLOB on a remote database and transfer them back and forth that way.
    You could also build a file server that will handle requests to serve/retrieve files from your applet. (I would look into serialization for this one, personally.)
    Keep in mind that the applet that is running on the client machine is not "connected" to your server unless you "connect" it yourself (via socket, URLConnection, etc.)

  • Server 10.4, Older Clients, and ACLs over AFP

    What's the deal with ACLs in 10.4.5 and old clients (e.g. 10.3 clients)? Should 10.3 clients respect ACLs, or should they be default to the POSIX permissions when logged in to the server using AFP in Finder? What about an OS 9 client over Appletalk?
    Quicksliver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    I can confirm that server-side Effective Permissions, including ACLs, are utilized by pre-Tiger systems. With that in mind, though, note that Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9 and earlier may show fake "POSIX" permissions in their Info windows (usually in the form of an owner that "changes"). Mac OS 9 systems may show something unexpected as well.
    Mac OS X 10.4 uses AFP 3.2, which supports a maximum volume size of at least 16 TB; that's the maximum file size as well. Since the AppleShare client 3.8.8 and 3.8.9 in Mac OS 9.1 and 9.2.2 were designed for AFP 2.2, the maximum volume size will be 2.0 TB; likewise, the maximum vile size is 2.0 GB. See the File Sharing limitations for Mac OS 9 in this document for more details: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=15460
    Likewise, Mac OS 9 uses Mac OS Roman name encoding for English language systems. For all systems, Mac OS X uses Unicode file name encoding. One side effect of this is that Mac OS 9 systems will truncate file names to 31 characters, and non-Roman characters (for English systems) may not display correctly.*
    Further, the AFP process in Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server is not configured to support transport connections using the AppleTalk protocol. This is not new to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, even though client support for AFP over AppleTalk has been removed in Mac OS X 10.4. That is, all Mac OS X Server systems have utilized TCP/IP for transport since Mac OS X 10.0. Thus, your client systems need to have TCP/IP networking configured.
    Mac OS X 10.2 and later can browse for your server using multicast DNS (mDNS/Rendezvous/Bonjour). To enable browsing for your server from Mac OS 9 systems, the easiest thing to do is to enable AppleTalk for the server's primary Ethernet interface. This will allow all systems to browse for (locate) your server more easily. Earlier versions of Mac OS X Server supported SLP broadcasting, which is a TCP/IP-based server announcement supported by Mac OS 9 through Mac OS X 10.4.x.
    * The HFS+ filesystem supports 255-character Unicode names, but that feature was not utilized until the release of Mac OS X 10.0, even though HFS+ was introduced in Mac OS 8.1.

    The c410a has ceased to behave with Mountain Lion.  The newer OS machines can still access via the embedded web server, but no other way.  Older mac running Lion has no issues
    Since I recently upgraded Norton on the newer machines, I suspect that may be an issue.

  • Mail slow authenticating to Yosemite server

    I'm running mail on a Yosemite server, and Mac Mail client on Yosemite. With the "Activity" window open on the Mail client, I see two copies of "Communicating with server: Authenticating" a lot. On the server /Library/Logs/Mail/mail-err.log is filled with lines:
    Nov 06 10:58:06 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<MuZNkS4HfQDAqAAd>): Credentials could not be verified, username or password is invalid.
    Nov 06 10:58:06 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<MuZNkS4HfQDAqAAd>): authentication failed for user=simon, method=DIGEST-MD5
    Nov 06 11:00:12 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<suuzmS4HggDAqAAd>): Credentials could not be verified, username or password is invalid.
    Nov 06 11:00:12 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<suuzmS4HggDAqAAd>): authentication failed for user=simon, method=DIGEST-MD5
    Nov 06 11:00:18 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<BLfTmS4HhADAqAAd>): Credentials could not be verified, username or password is invalid.
    Nov 06 11:00:18 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<BLfTmS4HhADAqAAd>): authentication failed for user=simon, method=DIGEST-MD5
    Nov 06 11:00:28 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<okUwmi4HhgDAqAAd>): Credentials could not be verified, username or password is invalid.
    Nov 06 11:00:28 auth: Error: od(simon,192.168.0.29,<okUwmi4HhgDAqAAd>): authentication failed for user=simon, method=DIGEST-MD5
    In the Server Mail settings, I have "Authenticate Using" set to "Local Users" (which checks the "Digest (CRAM-MD5)" and "Digest-MD5" boxes).
    On the client, in the Mail IMAP settings for the account I have selected (picking what I think will be relevant) "Automatically detect and maintain account settings", "Port: 993", "Use SSL", "Authentication: Password" and "Use IDLE command if server supports it". I have NOT selected "Allow insecure authentication". I have previously selected "Authenticaion: MD5 Challenge-Response", but it seems to revert to "Password". I have an iPad and iPhone, both of which have "MD5 Challenge-Response" set, and don't appear to generate anything in mail-err.log
    Mail from the Yosemite client works, it is just a bit sluggish. Under Mavericks new messages seemed to arrive simultaneously on all three clients, but now they hit iOS first.

    OK, I think I have solved this. In the client Mail app I de-selected "Automatically detect and maintain account settings". Login then failed. Authentication had switched itself to "Password" while automatic detection of account settings was on. I changed authentication back to "MD5 Challenge-Response", and login now works, I don't get "Authenticating" hanging around in the activity window, and I don't get lots of "authentication failed" messages in the mail logs on the server.

  • Yosemite Server 4 Messages Group Auto Buddy Not Working

    I know I have had issues with the group auto buddy in the past versions of server, and I am setting up a new Yosemite Server 4 from scratch with OD. I have checked the box in a group to make members buddies automatically, and it isn't working.
    I went into console and received this message:

    Anyone have idea? Isn't this supposed to work off the shelf without command line configuration?

    Thanks Linc,
    I did a few searches but that never came up.

  • Can't Connect to Yosemite VPN Server from Mavericks Clients

    Hi All,
    I upgraded my Mac Mini Server to Yosemite and none of the Mavericks Clients I have (a 13 inch MBA and a 2010 MM) can connect. However all other machines running Yosemite can connect without issue, this includes another 2010 MM and an 11 inch MBA and all iOS 8+ devices. I've tried deleting and recreating the VPN configuration in the local machines. Anyone else seeing anything like this issue? The Mountain Lion to Mavericks upgrade had a similar issue but I believe that racoon was just broken in that release.
    Thanks

    Hi Linc,
    One of them I am upgrading, the other is a machine I am waiting on a different application to update first prior to upgrading. I am guess I am just a bit frustrated, after the Mountain Lion to Mavericks update I had to call in 4 times and talk my way to enterprise support to get anyone that would even try to assist with Server/VPN. It was the 3rd call that they actually acknowledged an issue- guess I was just attempting to verify if others were seeing this prior to calling in. I don't think its unreasonable to think a server upgrade could support clients like with an OS that is a year old. Just want to make sure I am not "seeing things" when looking at racoon logs and seeing very familiar error messages.
    Thanks

  • Can log into Yosemite server (4.0) VPN service with a Mavericks client, but not Yosemite client

    Sever Info:
    Yosemite Server 4.0 running on a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8 GB RAM with vpnd service enabled
    The server was upgraded to Yosemite - not clean install - this may not matter (see below)
    Airport extreme router with standard VPN UDP ports for L2TP forwarded to server (500, 1701, 4500)
    Client info:
    MB Air 13" early 2014 with 8 GB RAM
    Yosemite
    Mavericks 10.9.5 running as a Parallels virtual machine (don't ask - I need it to run an app for work that is not yet compatible with Yosemite)
    OD service is NOT running - no VPN connections ever occurred from ANY client with this service running - OD is not needed in my case fortunately
    With the OD service off, I can connect via the Mavericks virtual machine just fine, but not with Yosemite. With Yosemite, the ppp connection appears to occur, but server config requests appear to fall on deaf ears (client side doesn't appear to respond) until the connection times out. Can't figure out what triggers the client response to a server config request. Client side complains about no route to host and IP addresses don't get assigned to the connection.
    The connection happens successfully in an eyeblink with the Mavericks client. Same username/password/shared secret in both instances.
    Tried a generated .vpnconfig from the server, this also did not work.
    It's possible that it is an auth problem, but can't figure out how the process occurs or what may be going wrong. There does not seem to be an obvious way to increase the granularity of the logging such that it might give other hints - at least that I can find. I found plenty of references to VPN issues when people upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks as well as work arounds for this. I tried the most promising looking of those - no love. I reverted everything back to stock install since I could at least connect with Mavericks.
    If log entries would be helpful, they are included below. I've stared at them long enough - perhaps a new set of eyes can provide a hint.
    In addition, I can find no documentation regarding the VPN service in Yosemite server so as to get a clue as to whether there have been changes in racoon since Mavericks.
    Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I would be glad to supply any other info needed for an accurate diagnosis .
    Pat

    2014-10-21 12:10:09 MDT   --> Client with address = 192.168.1.226 has hungup

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • ICal server accessible from clients, but not from a local user...

    So I've got iCal server running just fine, and the clients log in and work great.
    However, when I try to connect to the iCal server from a user that's local to the server itself (i.e. a non-Admin user on the Mac Pro running the server software) I get Kerberos errors.
    The user, while local, is also been added to the Directory via the Workgroup manager. And what's strange is that their login will work just fine when coming from a client, and will work just fine for things like the Wiki Server and such locally.
    However, when we try to add an account to their iCal to let them see a Group's Shared Calendar and todos It asks for their Kerberos password, and then even if given a valid password for a valid user (that an outside client works fine with) it states that it can't find that user in the Kerberos.
    Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't been able to figure out what. Any help would be loved!

    Hi
    Don't use Kerberos for the authentication method and it should work just fine.

  • Problem while sending ByteArray from as3 client through netconnection call method to red5 server

    Hi to all,
    I'm trying to send from as3 client a ByteArray of more or less 3 MB using NetConnection's call method but I am unable to do it, cause I get a timeout on the server and the client get disconnected (I have also increased the timeout limit in red5.properties but nothing changed). If I try to send a smaller ByteArray I don't have problem, even if the trasfer is really slow.
    Any solution?
    thanks

  • Mapviewer displaying maps differently from the client than from the server

    Can anyone explain to me why this is happening. I have been deploying my java server page to the server, and the way it works is to have multiple base routes which are not originally shown, but the user can 'check' them and they will display. On the server this works as one would expect, but on the client
    I originally couldn't get this to work through Jdeveloper, but now it works -- that's another story :(
    all of my base maps are displayed when the map first comes up. I don't want this to occur because it takes too long. Anyway, does anyone know why the map is working different from the client than it does when I deploy it to the server? Here is the significant code:
    var basemap1 = new MVBaseMap("ds_prod.prod_rdlg_qry");
    var basemap2 = new MVBaseMap("ds_prod.interstate", "", true);
    basemap2.setTransparent(true);
    var basemap3 = new MVBaseMap("ds_prod.primary", "", true);
    basemap3.setTransparent(true);
    mapview = new MVMapView(document.getElementById("map"), baseURL);
    mapview.addBaseMapLayer(basemap1);
    mapview.addBaseMapLayer(basemap2);
    mapview.addBaseMapLayer(basemap3);
    basemap1.setVisible (true);
    basemap2.setVisible (false);
    basemap3.setVisible (false);
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi
    Whitch version of mapviewer are you using? (MVBaseMap/addBaseMapLayer is for older versions, and in newer there is MVMapTileLayer/addMapTileLayer)
    I had similar difficulties displaying multiple tile layers in application with mapviewer ver. B080618. (not sute, may be in newer versions this works different)
    When adding all tile layers initially and then setting theig Visible properties, browser fetches from server data for ALL the layers (even if they were set to visible -> false)
    the workaround was to add aditional layers ony when this is needed.

  • Older Clients cannot Authenticated to 10.10 Server ( Also SMB issues)

    Hello
    I am having a few issues with Server.app ( running on 10.10.2)
    It appears older clients ( tested but 10.6 and 10.7) cannot log into the servers open directory. They can bind to it but cannot log in. If i log in with a local account they can still access file sharing etc.
    10.10 clients are fine no issues whatsoever with logging in. ( i have not had a chance to test 10.9 and i don't have any 10.8 clients )
    I am guessing its something to do with the way older OSs authenticate with the OD but i am not sure, don't have a huge amount of experience with OD outside of general admin.
    My second issue is with SMB.
    I am using SMB for file shares, everything was working well and then i started to have issues where users get a message saying the fire cannot be read or written error 36.
    The file however would copy over no issue at all.
    if i connect via cifs:// rather than smb:// it works ( this uses the older version of SMB ) but in an ideal world i would prefer if i did not have to use this as i would have to run a script on every client to force it to use cifs://
    AFP works fine however i cannot use AFP for 2 reasons.
    MS office for mac does not agree with it , accessing files over afp with this application causes files to be corrupted and become locked for editing. Apparently you need to have a globally writable folder called .TemporyItems in the root of the share for MS office to work correctly ( good design there microsoft) but this does not appear to work.
    AFP does also not appear to make file inherit the permissions when you copy something into the directory so its no good for a shared folder .
    Is there any way to force yosemite server to use SMB1 so i don't have to edit every single clients settings?
    I would also be happy to use AFP if the 2 issues above can be solved.
    This is so strange our old 10.6 server works just fine with MS office over AFP.

    my 10.6 clients log in to new accounts with home folders on a new Yosemite server but take about 4 minutes...
