Yosemite Server Vs. Windows Server 2012

Hello, I wonder does Yosemite server can replace Windows Server 2012 and work as full as server operation system?
In services:
DNS
DHCP
Webserver
FTP
Mailserver
Maybe Virtualization

We found the same. One small Mac mini replaced a towering Dell, tripled the uptime of our UPS and the Mac Server could not have been easier to configure. It almost fell into operation with all the services you mention. We don't employ an IT department or external contractor to manage this either (we are all electrical engineers here though...)
Biggest benefit other than stability, ease of maintenance? TIME MACHINE - for us - this is worth its weight in gold to have such a simple and effective backup strategy.
But..... We have found some issues with the SMB (File serving / File sharing) functionality from windows clients.
Files that are open on an SMB share from a Windows 7 client, all our users eventually complain that the file/s they have been working on and had open for 2 hours (some shorter some longer) suddenly becomes read only... And they no longer have permission (even though they created it, have group privileges etc) to delete, move, rename etc. Strange things happen with file locks too, so the file can report it's in use when the owner tries to open the file after closing the app and starting again. (problems are related obviously)  Only the admin can change it...  (doesn't matter the app or format - CAD, Word, Excel.... or MYOB accounting files! etc)
We ended up running a W7 instance in a VM and handle the critical file sharing out of there. (Could have set up server 2012 in a basic mode - but seems mad to have 2 full servers. Had other reasons for wanting the W7 VM anyway - so no big deal, but less than ideal for a "file" server.
If anyone has ideas - about what might cause the crazy permissions issues - happily discuss - but other than that - OSX Server is a great choice for us.

    You can mix both as long as your Forest and Domain Functional level are Windows Server 2003. However, I would like to bring your attention to this blog about known problems when mixing DCs with Windows Server 2003 and 2012 R2 OS:

  • How to Migrate windows 2008r2 RDS server to Windows server 2012r2 RDS

    Hi, I want to migrate our 2008r2 RD server + Cals to windows server 2012r2 server, the user will still connect to 2008r2 server but the server hosting the license will be migrated to a 2012r2 server. Currently I have 2 servers that users can connect
    to that are served by the 2008r2 RDS (the server I'm converting is just hosting the license) the server user connect to point to this license server. How do I proceed to migrate, I'm searching for documentation but I can't find much, I found that I can only
    convert to 2012r2 from 2012 or better OS, so I installing a temporary 2012 server to do a double migration seem to be the best course of action but I can't find any documentation on how to Migrate the Remote Desktop Services Role Services from 2008r2 to Windows
    Server 2012.
    Also I just discovered that this server is also hosting license for windows server 2003 terminal service. Will I be able to host these licences on 2012R2 ?
    Any pointer would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    It seems like migration the Remote Desktop Services Role Services from 2008r2 to Windows Server 2012 is not supported.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn479239.aspx
    So i think you may install and configure the RDS server on Windows Server 2012 and then migration to Windows Server 2012r2.
    Hope this helps.

  • Integrate On-Premises Exchange Server With Windows Server Essentials

    I have Exchange Server 2013 installed on Win Server 2012 R2 joined to Windows Server Essentials domain.  Attempting to integrate the Exchange Server into the Essentials domain from the Essentials Dashboard using the wizard fails with the error, "Cannot
    locate an Exchange Server on the network. Make sure that your Exchange Server is setup and that it is connected to the network".  I can communicate with the server in multiple ways from the Essentials Server and other computers on the domain.  Mail
    flow in and out of the Exchange Server works without issue.  I can use the various management tools to administer the Exchange Server.  The only task I cannot complete is integrating it into the Essentials environment which I need to do to move on
    to creating user mailboxes for user accounts setup in AD.
    All research to date has come up empty handed.
    Help!

    Hi RSUL,
    Any update?
    On current situation, would you please let me confirm something more? It may help me to understand this issue
    clearly.
    Would you please let me know how join the Windows Server 2012 R2 (which had been installed Exchange Server 2013) to Windows Server Essentials domain? Did use Connector software
    (type http://servername/connect)?
    On server essentials, please open Dashboard and navigate to DEVICES. Then check the Status of this server which had been installed Exchange Server 2013.
    Currently, the Services Integration features, including on-premises Exchange integration, are only supported in a single domain controller environment. Meanwhile, the integration
    wizard must be run on a domain controller.
    In addition, please refer to the following article and check if can help you.
    On
    Premises Exchange Integration Windows Server 2012 Essentials
    Integrate an On-Premises Exchange Server
    with Windows Server Essentials
    By the way, please check Event Viewer and some relevant logs if you can find some more clues.
    Hope this helps.

    IIS 6 Management Console
    Note: There is a File Upload limitation in IIS 7 on Windows 2008 Server, IIS will reject any file that is
    larger than 30 MB. This is a default limitation of IIS. You can increase the maximum file size by
    setting the parameter maxAllowedContentLength in the file ApplicationHost.config.
    The following command can be used to set the parameter from the command prompt, please
    change the directory to Windows\System32\inetserv and then execute the command.
    appcmd setconfig /section:requestFiltering/requestLimits.maxAllowedContentLength:150000000
    The value is only an example, in this case the upload limit is set to 150MB.Server has to be restarted
    after execution of this command.
    Also, are you using Maxdb to store the files or is it a "flat files" content server  ?
    HTH.

  • Installing Sun Directory Server on Windows Server 2008

    Has anyone tried installing Sun Java System Directory Server in Windows Server 2008? I am trying to do this but get an error stating that nss3.dll is missing at configuration time.

    Windows 2008 is not a supported platform for any DSEE release. Even if you get it working, Sun Support won't be able to help if you have issues.
    This issue seems to have been reported on Windows 2000 with DSEE 6.0 too and one workaround is to remove the nss3.dll from c:\winnt\system32 or equivalent directory. Please note this workaround is not targeted at Windows 2008, so use at your own risk.

  • I am unable to create pdf using adobe printer to a redirected folder on a server running windows server 2003

    I am unable to create pdf using adobe printer to a redirected folder on a server running windows server 2003

    In the app-server-ant.xml file, as indiacted in the error message i am getting, at line 145 it is suppose to get the path to \bin\asadmin.bat from the value of a paramater called 'asadmin'. This value is being set in the beginning of the file.
    The parameter value of 'asadmin' is further referring to value of another parameter called 'javaee.home' which is being set in tut-install/javaeetutorial5/examples/bp-project/build.properties
    I have checked the values of both these parameters and they are set correctly, so since it is still giving me problems, at line 145 i hard coded the path instead of the parameter name:
    I replaced line
    <exec executable="${asadmin}" failonerror="${failonerror}" dir="${javaee.home}">
    with
    <exec executable="c:/sun/appserver/bin/asadmin.bat" failonerror="${failonerror}" dir="${javaee.home}">
    This works.

  • How do I change the URL to the Remote Web Access server in Windows Server 2012?

    Hallo!
    I have set up a Remote Dexktop Service using the "Quick" deployment method in Server Manager and everything is working greate internally, but I cannot start an app published in Remote Web Access from outside our network.
    The problem is that it wants to start the using the internal URL, for example, server.domain.local, instead of the external one, for example remote.server.com.
    I therefore want to know how I can change the default URL for the Remote Web Access server and all the Remote Web Apps in Windows Server 2012?
    I have allready looked in Server Manager and I can change some of the deployment settings in server manager, but there is no way to alter the URL of the Remote Web Access server. See below images:
    Pressing the internal URL only results in opening the internal URL.
    This was very simple to do in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the tsconfig tool, but it does not seam to be any way of solving this in server manager.
    A possible sollution would be to alter the registry someware in HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Terminal Services. But this can easaly lead to problems due to wrong format, etc. and is probably not supported.
    Is there a simpler and supported way?

    That option can be used to connect to any machine that you want.  The error message indicates that the client machine cannot resolve the name "server.domain.local" to an IP address that it can connect to.
    You have several options for configuring that tab on the RDweb site.  You can even remove it entirely.
    Customization of RD Web Site
    RD Web provides a number of customization options for the RD Web interface, including the ability to control default Gateway server settings and redirection settings. These settings
    are controlled by editing the web.config file located in %SYSTEMROOT%\Web\RDWeb\Pages.
    Displaying Local Help
    To display local help for users instead of the web-based help, edit the LocalHelp value and change the value from false to true.
    <!-- LocalHelp: Displays local help for users, instead of the web-based help. Value must be "true" or "false" -->
    <add key="LocalHelp" value="false" />
    When this value is changed, a user that clicks on Help in the upper right corner of the RD Web login page will open the local help file instead of web-based help.
    Hiding the Connect to a Remote PC Tab
    The RDWeb page
    Connect to a Remote PC tab can be hidden from users to prevent connections to any servers through RD Web other than the servers configured in a collection. By default, this setting is set to true and the
    Remote Desktops tab is displayed. To hide the tab, set the value to false.
    <!-- ShowDesktops: Displays or hides the Remote Desktops tab. Value must be "true" or "false" -->
    <add key="ShowDesktops" value="true" />
    When the value is set to false, a user will not see the Connect to a Remote PC tab when logged on to the RD Web page
    RD Gateway Settings
    If the Connect to a Remote PC tab is enabled, an administrator can configure RD Web to use a Gateway server when connecting to remote computers. To specify a gateway, edit the below
    value with the name of the RD Gateway server:
    <!-- DefaultTSGateway: Admin can preset this to a given Gateway name, or set to "" for no gateway. -->
    <add key="DefaultTSGateway" value="" />
    The default authentication method for the RD Gateway server can also be configured by editing the following section of the web.config:
    <!-- GatewayCredentialsSource: TS Gateway Authentication Type.
    Admins can preset this.
    0 = User Password
    1 = Smartcard
    4 = "Ask me later"
    -->
    <add key="GatewayCredentialsSource" value="0" />
    Devices and Resources
    By default, only Printers and Clipboard are redirected on connections made using the Connect to a Remote PC tab. If the user clicks the
    Options << button, the redirection settings for a specific connection can be modified
    To configure each specified redirection option to be enabled or disabled by default, edit the following section in the web.config file:
    <!-- Devices and resources: Preset the Checkbox values to either true or false -->
    <add key="xPrinterRedirection" value="true" />
    <add key="xClipboard" value="true" />
    <add key="xDriveRedirection" value="false" />
    <add key="xPnPRedirection" value="false" />
    <add key="xPortRedirection" value="false" />
    LAN Experience Defaults
    Windows Server 2012 RD Web Access can display a new user selectable option for optimizing the connection for a LAN experience. This option is displayed at the bottom of the RD Web
    page and can be controlled by the administrator using the following section of the web.config file:
    <!--  Checkbox to opt for optimized LAN experience -->
    <add key="ShowOptimizeExperience" value="false" />
    <add key="OptimizeExperienceState" value="false" />
    This value is set to false by default, but when changed to true, the following checkbox will display at the bottom of the webpage. The LAN experience
    checkbox can also be set as enabled by default.
    Each setting can also be modified using the IIS Manager user interface:

  • Exchange Server 2013 and Remote Access VPN on a single server running Windows Server 2012?

    Just by way of background, I have been installing and administering network servers, e-mail systems, VPN servers, and the like for many years.  However, my involvement with Exchange and Windows Server has been mostly on the forensics and data recovery
    level, or as a (sophisticated) user.  I have never tried to deploy either from scratch before.  My deployment experiences have been mostly with Linux in recent years, and with small private or personal "servers" running such cutting edge
    software as Windows XP back when it was new.  And even NetWare once.
    When a client asked me if I could set up a server for his business, running Exchange Server (since they really want Outlook with all of its bells and whistles to work, particularly calendars) and providing VPN access for a shared file store, I figured it
    could not be too difficult given that its a small business, with only a few users, and nothing sophisticated in the way of requirements.  For reasons that don't bear explaining here, he was not willing to use a vendor hosting Exchange services or cloud
    storage.  There is no internal network behind the server; it is intended to be a stand-alone server, hanging off a static IP address on the Internet, providing the entirely mobile work-force of about 10 people with Exchange-hosted e-mail for their computers
    and phones, a secure file store, and not much else.  If Exchange didn't need it, I would not need to install Active Directory, for example.  We have no direct need for its services.
    So I did the research and it appears, more by implication than outright assertion, that I should be able to run Windows Server 2012 with Exchange Server 2013 on a server that also hosts Remote Access (VPN only) and does nothing else.  And it appears
    I ought to be able to do it without virtualizing any of it.  However, I have spent the last three or four days fighting one mysterious issue after another.  I had Remote Access VPN working and fairly stable very quickly (although it takes a very
    long time to become available after the server boots), and it has mostly remained reliable throughout although at times while installing Exchange it seems to have dropped out on me.  But I've always been able to get it back after scrounging through the
    logs to find out what is bothering it.  I have occasionally, for a few minutes at a time, had Exchange Server willing to do everything it should do (although not always everything at the same time).  At one point I even received a number of e-mails
    on my BlackBerry that had been sent to my test account on the Exchange Server, and was able to send an e-mail from my BlackBerry to an outside account.
    But then Exchange Server just stopped.  There are messages stuck in the queues, among other issues, but the Exchange Administration Center refuses now to display anything (after I enter my Administrator password, I just get a blank screen, whether on
    the server or remotely).
    So, I am trying to avoid bothering all of you any more than I have to, but let me just begin with the basic question posed in the title: Can I run Exchange Server (and therefore Active Directory and all of its components) and Remote Access (VPN only) on
    a single Windows Server 2012 server?  And if so, do I have to run virtual machines (which will require adding more memory to the server, since I did not plan for it when I purchased it)?  If it can be done, can anyone provide any pointers on what
    the pitfalls are that may be causing my problems?  I am happy to provide whatever additional information anyone might like to help figure it out.
    Thanks!

    An old thread but I ran into this issue and thought I share my solution since I ran into the same issue. Configuring VPN removes the HTTPS 443 binding on the Default Site in IIS for some strange reason; just go and editing the bindings, add HTTPS and things
    should be back to normal.
