Yosemite Server when restarted turns of file sharing.

Yosemite Server when restarted turns off file sharing.  Any way to get file sharing to stay on after rebooting without manually turning it on?

All services that are running should return to operation once restarted.  Now, that being said, where are your share points located?  Are they on an external volume?  If so, what connection bus?  It is possible that file services is failing to start because the volume(s) that contain(s) the share points is/are not accessible yet.
Beyond that, have you looked in the logs?  /var/log/system.log is a good place to start.  Are there any entries that point to a reason for the service to fail to start?

  • Finder crashes when I turn off File Sharing in a Shared Mac

    Hi,
Situation: I have 2 laptops: a Macbook Pro Retina and a Black Macbook (ca. 2008, Snow Leopard). I have turned on File Sharing on both ever since and enjoyed being able to transfer files from one to another.
Lately, whenever I turn off File Sharing in my Black MB, turn it off, or basically use my MBP retina without being connected to my Black MB thru File Sharing, the Finder of MBPR is extremely slow. Every time I open a new window, open a folder, or switch tabs in the sidebar, it is extremely sluggish.
However, once I turn File Sharing back on in my Black MB (or pretty much whenever I get connected to my Black MB), everything is back to normal.
Also, even when I "eject" my Black MB from the "Shared" list in my MBPr, MBPr automatically reconnects to Black MB.
Any ideas on why this happen?
    Things I've tried:
    1. Clean caches
    2. Restarted PRAM
    3. Reinstalled OS X ML
    Same result.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped during that interval. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • OS X Server 3.01 Install and File Sharing Problem(s)...

Greetings...Apologies in advance for the lenght of this post...but I wanted to provide as much info as possible to the community to see if someone can see what I may be doing wrong.
My goal:  Replace an existing iMac running Mavericks Server v3.01 that I use for Open Directory & file sharing with a new Mac Mini Server (late 2012) running Mavericks Server v3.01.  Once new server is working and users defined...I will copy the users data from the iMac to the mac Mini server...then re-purpose the iMac as a simple client (bound to the new Mac Mini server).
Before we get to what I have been trying...I guess I should ask a few basic questions:
Can you have 2 Mavericks servers on the same Local network?
Can you have 2 servers as OD Masters on the same local network?
Are there any "Best Practices" I can follow to set up the new server on a local network that already has a server on it?
Here is what I have tried:
First off...I assign a static IP address to the Mac Mini on the router and disable the WiFi on the mac mini.  I am using a direct ethernet cable connection from the mac mini to the router.
Next, I intall Mavericks client and configure that.  I download Sever from the App store and install it.  After it is installed...I run the "ChangeIp -CheckHostName" command in a terminal window and it reports that the "Names are the same" or something to that effect.
Next up...I turn on Open Directory and set up a OD Master...using essentially all the defaults.  I then turn on file sharing and set up a share for the "Users" folder and set that share to use AFP & SMB and to also use it for Home folders.
I then set up a test user as a "Local Network user" and specify that the users home folder is on the "Users" sharepoint.
Once that is done.  I logoff the admin account on the server.  I then go to my macbook pro and bind it to the server (Users/Login options).  I see the server identified as "Mac-Mini.home", select that and it shows a green dot next to the server...which I interpret as it was bound successfully.
I then log in to the newly created network user from newly bound macbook pro.  No errors are reported and I seem to be functioning fine.  I can use Safari.
As a functional test (lame ... probably)  I try to log in from a bound client, save a text text file to the documents folder. Log out as the user on the bound client...Then I log in as that user on the server to see if I can edit/update that same file from thedocuments folder.
However, when I launch the TextEdit app on the bound client, it appears briefly on the Dock...then crashes with a system error.   I tried to read the error...but it looks greek to me.  I did see something to the effect "operation not permitted...".
I logoff the bound macbook pro.  go to the server and log in as that newly created local network user.  I get logged in.  I am able to launch Text edit when logged in as the user.  I can add text...save the test file to the document folder.  Everything looks good.  I just cannot seem to log in as the user from both the bound client and the server and have it work normally.
So...I am obviously not doing something either in the correct order, or not configuring a service correctly...something I am doing wrong.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

A NAS should work. A proper file server will cache active files in memory. So it's not obvious use of SSD storage will speed your service. In any case figure out how to back it up and most important how you will recover after a disaster requiring full recovery.

How do I turn on file sharing to connect my Mac Book Pro to my desk top?

That is why I said to restore via iTunes, did you check the link?
This will put it back to factory settings and you can set it up with the new ID once you reconnect with your HDTV. This is not done via ethernet, as per the link you need to connect to the computer via micro usb. You cannot bypass home sharing.
FYI: An Apple ID cannot be deleted so the old one would still exist (even if you no longer use the email account it is associated with).

  • Turn on File Sharing via ARD?

I have one stubborn G4 running OS X 10.3.8 that keeps turning off File Sharing all on its own. It seems to happen a) infrequently and b) spontaneously. However, File Sharing needs to always be on with this Mac because, well, people need to copy things to it.
Is there a way, using ARD, that I can send a command (Unix? AppleScript?) to that machine to turn on File Sharing? Sure, I can control the Mac with ARD and with a few mouse clicks turn it on manually, but for the sake of argument lets say I'm lazy. Can it be done?
I had a look at networksetup and systemsetup in the ARD manual but those don't seem to do what I want. Any other ideas? Preferably something I can save as a task...

I posted the same question in the AppleScript forum and got an answer:

  • Can I turn off file sharing on iPhone and iPad?

Got an iPad for work recently to store all of my secure PDF documents on.  These PDF's contain lots of sensitive and high security information.
The other day I was messing around with it and discovered that the iPad could be plugged into any computer with iTunes and all of my files could be downloaded using the file sharing part of the program.  I have searched and searched and searched, but cannot find any way to disable file sharing on my iPad at all.
So I have 2 questions.  First of all, can I disable file sharing on my iPad?  And Secondly, if I can't disable it, does anyone know an app that I can use to manage folders of PDF files that doesn't use file sharing?
    Any help is appreciated!

Which program includes such a file sharing option?
Do you making use of the iPad's Passcode Lock feature especially with having such sensitive and high security info included with these PDF files?
Using the Passcode Lock prevents the iPad from being synced with iTunes on any other computer and from transferring data from or to the iPad with iTunes on any other computer other than the computer used for syncing your iPad.

  • Accessing Server when only connected via Internet Sharing

Currently, I don't have the ability to directly connect my Mac Pro which I use as a Server to the router as I have no direct access to it via cable and it does not have an Airport card.
However, I can access the internet on it if I use internet sharing on my iMac which is connected via Gigabit Ethernet to the Mac Pro at all times.
In order to use any of the services such as Time Machine from another machine, I always need to connect it directly by cable. This leaves me wondering if there is a way to tunnel the Mac Pro through the iMac so it is accessible via Wifi? Is there a setting on either Machine I have to activate / set to make this work?
It is only thought to be a temporary solution until I move to a new flat where it will be directly connected to an Airport Extreme.
    Thanks for your help!

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.

  • ORA-01242 - Media failure when restarting DB - data file locked ?

    Hi all,
I've been experiencing the same problem on several databases for about one month.
This occured on 8.1.7.4.1 and 9.2.0.7.0 db, on windows servers (2000 & XP).
Here is the problem : I have scheduled tasks that shutdown the db, then restart and dump it.
But for the 5th or 6th time in one month, I've found a stopped database in the morning
and the same error in the alert.log file :
    alter database open
    Sat Jun 09 03:10:06 2007
    Errors in file e:\oracle\admin\elu\bdump\elu_lgwr_5708.trc:

    OSD-04002: unable to open file
O/S-Error: (OS 32) Le processus ne peut pas accéder au fichier car ce fichier est utilisé par un autre processus.
-> this error message in french says that the datafile is already used by another process.
After performing a "recover datafile", I can restart the database.
I don't understand what kind of process could lock a datafile in a db that has just been restarted...
It seems that this problem never happened before, but now I get this error every week o_O
    can anyone help ?
    Thanks !
    regards,
    Antoine

I've found the source of the problem.
Actually everytime I got this problem, the datafile was locked by the backup software (DAT) during the night.
    thx for your reply

  • How Do I Turn the File Sharing On, on my powerBook G4

    Hello there,
I had always been able to send or share files from my PowerBook G4 to my G5, through the router of the house, because my G5 has no AirPort. My PowerBook had earlier this month, to be replaced from its hard drive and I heard that sometimes that can affect the airport. But, I do have access to internet (good thing!) I just cannot find it on the directory of my G5 and there are files on my G4, that I would like to bring into my G5.
Do you know what can I try to make it work again? Any suggestions?
    thanks a lot!

Thanks so much Adrian!! I knew it was something simple, I was just too stressed yesterday to keep looking! Ja, awesome, thank you man!

  • Server Admin alphabetized list in File Sharing

Using Server Admin 10.5.8 to browse a sharepoint, directories are not listed alphabetically.
I cannot find an option to change the sorting.
    Thanks
    Chris

Like most column views in Server Admin you can click the column header to sort the list by that column. The change doesn't appear to be persistent, so you'll need to do it each time you launch Server Admin, but it should suffice.
