Yosemite slow, Beach ball always spinning when changing windows, doing activities

After upgrading to Yosemite the finder is very slow, when switching programs or selecting items get the spinning beach ball all the time.  Today when using Excel when delete a cell would get spinning beach ball for a few seconds.  On activity monitor seems to be seeing Kernel_task frequently and once in awhile WindowServer.  Kernel_task is allows getting to top on activity monitor.  Any help would be appreciated.

here is the info from EtreCheck.  I have 2 portables which are running fine.  The difference is I have parallels and crash plan installed which are not on the other machines.
Problem description:
Yosemite running slow, beach ball frequently, especially seems to related to finder actions.

  • Why is the beach ball always spinning?

I’ve used iPhoto from when it first came out. I’ve never really had any problems until iPhoto 5. Then I seemed to get the spinning beach ball every time I used the program. Concluding that perhaps my library had got a bit complex, I decided to start a new library and import all my photos. After hours of work, it’s now spinning once again. Usually it happens when I import photos. After importing I’ve got to force quit, then open up again in order to look at what I’ve just imported. Now it’s spinning even when I swap programs. I create a new folder or album, tab to another program, tab back again and off it goes. Force quit usually seems to solve the problem, but this can’t be right. All my programs are current via software update, I’m on the latest version of Tiger, and I’m running a 17 inch PowerPC iMac, with 1GB of RAM.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Any suggestions of a cure? Is iPhoto 5 just poor? Has anyone had this problem solved by iPhoto 6? I would be tempted to upgrade, but not to endure further frustration.

    Hi wingnutt,
If your camera was one of the cameras that had the large makernote problem, then it seems that has been resolved with iPhoto 6. Read the next link and see what you think.
If you want to find out more about the large Makernote problem,Apple Macintosh iPhoto 5 slowness
If you do have one of the cameras that have large Makernote files you may wnat to try (iPhoto) Exif Cleaner

my 3 year-old macbook pro is very slow. I have run disk utility and virus scan with no improvement. The "beach ball" will spin for minutes at a time when opening, closing or changing windows. Apple Store looked at it a few months ago with no help. What can I do?

    Under CPU: 3.5% user; 5% system; 91% idle; 441 threads; 90 processes.
    Under System: out of 2GB - 54.7MB free; 530MB wired; 603MB active; 862MB inactive; 1.95GB used.
Is too much of the system memory tied up? If so, what can I do to free some up?

  • Why is my mac os x running slow and freezing, also the beach ball keeps spinning?

My mac os x is running slow, and or freezing.  The beach ball keeps spinning.  I tried re-booting several times and eventually went back to normal and then back to the problem again.  Any ideas?

Keep bootable clone backups and use those to test with.
Repair your drive of course, Disk Warrior if you have that.
Then do a Safe boot the first time when you reboot to it.
corrupt files, caches, even a bad USB cable can cause trouble.
If the clone works, then reformat and restore.
And make sure your free space is 30% or more on your boot drive.
Off load media data files and such off the boot drive as well.
If and when it freezes, I've found Disk Warrior repair and rebuild of directory does help, not sure why.  but after a hard drive your disk directory will be corrupt (damaged) and in need of more than just a simple reboot or even Safe boot to fix.

  • 2009 iMac spinning beach ball all the time except windows 7

    Please Help
I have a early 2009 iMac every time I boot into OS X  and click on more than 2 things no matter what I get the spinning beach ball for ever but in Windows 7 everything is fine
reinstalled 10.5.6 that come with iMac countless times Apple hardware test is fine Memtest is fine changed harddrive no change opened iMac up and cleaned fans and everything else no change Changed keyboards and mouse no change its got me stumped why Windows 7 works fine but OS X does not had iMac since 2009 never had problem before.
PS nothing but keyboard and mouse connected to iMac
    Thanks Mark

Yes I am doing a complete erase of the hard drive and installing OS X brand new
as far as hard drives I am only using one at a time, I changed out to a brand new harddrive
If the logic board is failing WHY is windows 7 running fine with no problems I do not understand I have had macs all my life never had problems like this before
When Spotlight is indexing it just takes so long and does not finish as far as I know it should not take longer than 10 mins on a fresh system
any other things you could think of would be good as at the moment its just a very expensive Windows machine
    Thanks Mark

  • I get the beach ball of death when I empty the trash on my new 10.7 Mac. Even in safe mode

When I attempt to empty the trash I get the progress bar with message on how many items to empty and I get the barber pole lines but it never really starts to empty. I just have the beach ball of death. Everything else on the MacBook Pro comes to a halt (if you wait about 5 minutes an app selected to quit might quit). You can click on the X to stop emptying trash and it says it's stopping but it keeps showing the marching progress bar and the beach ball keeps spinning.
    Running 10.7. 8 gigs ram 2.0 ghz i7. 15".
The only way to shut down is force quit holding down the power key. Tried it in Safe Mode with same results.

    I had the same problem.
    Your advice solved my problem.
Thank you for the original post. And the two updates.
I nominate you for "15 Points." 5 for your helpful answer. And another 10 because it was correct.
Apple's Support Community needs more people like you.

Instead, you came back - not once but twice - to provide updates.
    Again, thank you.

  • Beach balling (extreme delaying) when printing in iPhoto '11

Everytime we just use the print option within iPhoto '11 to print, iPhoto basically freezes up and the beach ball just spins, and spins, and spins, and.... well you get the picture. So what we usually end up doing to solve the problem, is export out a picture to the desktop, where we are able to print from just fine. In fact, we can print from any other app just great. Has anyone else seen this issue?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death when saving.

    Hey all.
I just upgraded to leopard and am having a tough time with cs3. We absolutely have to work off of a server so I can't get around that. However, it's just a mac in the corner, so it's not so technical...
Anyway, whenever I run an simple action on a file, it runs fine, but I get a spinning beach ball for at least 15 seconds. I can click on other applications, but the finder locks up. This only happens in Leopard. I've tried in tiger, and it works better, although still slower than PS7 or CS. I've locked the mediabrowser file and upgraded to 10.5.4 which said to fix an issue with cs3 (maybe not this one).
I think this is related to working from the server but I don't have a choice.
    Anyone else experience this?

"We absolutely have to work off of a server so I can't get around that."
Somebody has forced you to suffer the consequences.
I've worked for companies like that and you have my condolences.

  • Spinning beach ball of death when opening a project

    hello,
i would like to ask if there is a solution to my problem:
at my school in the media department, there are 4 eMac's 2 with OS X Panther and imovie 04, and 2 with OS X jaguar with imovie 03, now only one of the jaguar computers has decided that it wont open only one project, and it needs to be sent off to the exam board, all that happens is when i open it, i just get the spinning beach ball of death, and nothing else, i have tried to connect another mac with ilife 04 to it but the same problem occurs, i am updating the macs so that they will all have panther and ilife 05, would that solve it? also would any existing projects from imovie 3/4 be able to be opened in ilife05?
    many thanks

  • Finder freezes (spinning beach ball) for minutes when in column view

Just in the last weeks, I get the spinning beach ball when I try to select an item in the column view. Doesnt happen with a folder, which just opens up another pane.
The beach ball continues for a couple of minutes, then it stops and the item is viewable.
This happens also when trying to open files from applications (in the column view)
    Powermac G4, Dual 1.0ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

First, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.
If that does'nt help, check out his Spinning Beachball link.
    Cheers!

  • IPhoto 09 and 11: spinning beach ball of death when accessing contextual menu.

Whenever I right click to access the contextual menu, iPhoto gives me the spinning beach ball of death. This happens only when I right click on a photo from the events in the iPhoto library. It freezes for a few seconds then the spinning ball appears.
This happened in iPhoto 09 so I upgraded to iPhoto 11, but the problem is still there. I have deleted all files from the previous version before installing iPhoto 11 but it didn't solve the problem. Those files were application support files, cache and preferences all in the library. I have even created a new library in iPhoto 11 and imported a few photos just to test it out, but the problem persisted. I just can't right click without having that spinning beach ball of death appear. The only solution is to force quit the application. This is very frustrating and I would appreciate any help.
I am running Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
    Thanks

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - try to launch iPhoto and check for any improvements.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Spinning beach ball of death when trying to save lecture notes! :(

the title says most of it...
I have 3 pages of lecture notes now that have been stuck with the save dialogue box open for over a half hour.
any ideas on how to retrieve the notes or force it out of the beach ball?

Again no if the application has hung.
If this happened during a save there sounds like it may have hit a snag with your drive, server or external device. If you can change something to do with these outside Pages you may get out of the hang which may be just Pages waiting on something.
To see if there is something identifiable going on, open *Activity Monitor* in your Utilities folder.
Hung activities will be shown in red, see if there is something besides Pages affected.
Click through the buttons at bottom from CPU to Network and also the processes pull down menu at the top of the Activity Monitor window.
In my experience most hangs are due to inadequate virtual memory which is in turn due to less than 10-15% of your Hard Drive being free, or sometimes due to inadequate real memory available.
    Peter
btw These **** huge OSX sheets are a PITA, whoever thought covering up your work with save or open dialogs was a good idea ought to be sent back to GUI training camp.

  • New - Macbook Pro - Running slow, beach ball spinning all the time

I've had my Macbook pro about 3 weeks and the beach ball is constantly spinning and I'm constantly having to force quit programs. Between Mail, Safari, and Aperture. Any ideas?
    Robin

    ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
    The reset the SMU:
    Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings.
