Yosemite spotlight issue : Couldn't add Spotlight Metadata Privacy password to keychain

Hi,
I get many error messages from spotlight mdwrite of this type : -[MDKeyRing initWithService:label:comment:] (/SourceCache/Spotlight/Spotlight-917.1/xpc-services/mdwrite/MDKeyRing.m:294) failed assertion -- Couldn't add Spotlight Metadata Privacy password to keychain!
For information, I already reindexed everything by running mdutils commands.
I am also experiencing many bugs with Mail searches and saving multiple Mail attachments, and I think this is related since this mdwrite bug always appear in the log with the corresponding actions with Mail (such as save attachments).
Could anyone help?
Best,
Laurent

  • OS X 10.8.3, TM & Spotlight Issue

I just upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 and my TM is no longer backing up. This appears to be a Spotlight issue as all I get is Estimating Index Time when I open Spotlight.  I tried the trick of making my HD private in Spotlight then public again - same result it's still estimating index time.  I've read lots of posts about Spotlight being buggy after operating system upgrades although most are 1-2 years old.  Anyone have a solution to this?

The pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting shows how to do it on a Time Machine backup drive; use the same procedure, but apply it to your internal HD instead.
The index is normally hidden; you need to be able to see it to delete it via the Finder.  Installing the Tinker Tool app via the link there is one way of making them visible.
Then locate and delete the index (but the one on your Mac's HD).
Which part of that do you need help with?

  • Problem with add Spotlight Comments script.

    Hello,
I am trying to add Spotlight Comments to some files using Automator. I have made an very simple script in Automator that add Spotlight Comments to the files that I have selected in Finder. I save this script as an app and it work great. I also save the same script but not as an app but as a service. The problem here is that when I run the service it add the same Spotlight Comment two times. For example, if I add "@Webshots" with the app the Spotlight Comments of the files is "@Webshots" but when I do it with the service the Spotlight Comments of the files is "@Webshots" "@Webshots". Can anybody help me with this? I will appreciate it a lot any help that you could give me. Thanks

I suspect your workflow includes 'get select finder items' as the first action. get rid of it. it's redundant in a service that accepts files and folder in finder. that's why everything happens twice.

  • Mac Newbie TM & Spotlight issues

    Hi All,
I got my new iMac on 21 September 2012.  I have a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive on my Netgear DGN 2200 router which Spotlight never really managed to index - it always estimates a huge amount of time and even if I let it go it doesn't get it done.
When I started TM backup it extimated about a month and I let it go because I thought it would figure out that it was a new / empty machine quite quickly and the estimate would come down.  After two days and only 2-3GB backed up I stopped it and deleted all of the backup data and started again.  Same issue.
Then I turned off spotlight and eventually got a week-long backup done.
I then updated to 10.7.5 supplemental upgrade which apparently fixes long TM backup issues.
Now, with spotlight turned back on TM has been taking forever with its incremental backups.  For example, I turned it on an hour ago and opened pages & Chrome, then it started a backup 50 minutes ago.  It says "Backing up: 116.6 MB of 116.6 MB" but it's still going 50 MINUTES later!!!  update: 75minutes later
Spotlight is still not indexing my external storage which is an issue because I have all of my work on the external.
I have been trawling through this forum but being a mac newbie I don't understand all of the jargon - sudo this and that, and if I get a solution it does need to be step by step.  I have always been tinkering around under the hood of previous M$ machines and would be a 'power-user' so I'm not stupid but it's a whole new language for me.
Should I upgrade to Mountatin Lion?
Is there any way I can downgrade to 10.6?
Is there any way to search without using spotlight?  On the pc I used to be able to search non-indexed locations, it would just take a little while.
Time Machine is not trying to backup my NAS drive is it?  From my understanding it doesn't do that but maybe it's confused ... ???
    Thanks for your help.

I don't use raid myself so I'll leave that explanation to others. I configure my Mac Pro with 4 drives. My main drive is my boot drive and has about 300+ gigs free. I have a backup drive for that which I use SuperDuper for backup, creating a fully bootable backup drive in the event my main drive has a problem. I only back up to that drive when my machine is "good and solid". That allows me to throw on the most recent update without much concern. If there is a problem then I just boot from my backup drive and I'm back up and running just fine. I also use the backup of my main drive for my Final Cut Pro scratch drive. I copy the files for my movies to external drives for archive when needed. For my data drives I use another set of 500 gig drives. One for data (mostly photos) and one to backup using superduper whenever I feel like it. You could automate it all with Retrospect for the data drives if you wanted to. I don't think Retrospect will make a bootable backup of a main drive. I use Western Digital WD5000KS ddrives, 500 megs each. They make another model for those wanting RAID. Set up RAID, by all means, if squeeking every ounce of speed is your goal to be sure. My setup is conservative, redundant and very safe. A simple search here or on google for RAID0 or such will turn up much info on raid configuations.

  • How-to: add spotlight tags when printing to PDF

    Hello,
I have an extensive knowledge base of articles that I store in one central folder. I would like to have the option of adding (predefined) spotlight tags in the process of doing this, so as to be able to use smartfolders in my knowlegde base to sort information.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Serge

The system automatically indexes the contents of the files for Spotlight use. The Spotlight comments you add are just extra info that wouldn't necessarily be found within the document. You can already use smart folders.
If you really want to add Spotlight comments using Automator, you can make use of the Finder action "Add Spotlight Comments to Finder Items".
If you want to find all actions in Automator having to do with Spotlight, just start typing "Spotlight" in the search field above Automator's actions. You may have to show the toolbar to see the search field, either with the View menu or using the button in the upper right corner of an Automator window.

  • New Issue that may be Spotlight related

    Hello all.
In the past week I have been having a long delay whenever I do anything that may be spotlight related.
    Here are a few examples...
If I try to upload an image, or any file, on any site, I can navigate to the image or file, but once I select the file, I get the fruity beach ball and it takes a few minutes before I can click the Choose button.
If I search my Address Book contacts for anything, I have the same delay.
If I attempt to attach a file to an email, same delay.
If I download a file, same delay.
If I search mail or anything in Spotlight, same delay.
I had a similar problem in the past, and it turned out to be a LaCie External Drive gone bad. This time, I turned off all external drives and I am still having the issue.
I recently upgraded to Suitcase Fusion and thought that may be the issue. I quit the application, still have the issue.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Thank you
    for your time.
    Cooch

Open ActivityMonitor and look to see what is taking up the CPU.
If it's Spotlight related, you'll usually see a jump in mds or mdimport activity.
I think there were some issues with fonts choking Spotlight way back when.. So that may be an avenue worth looking into.

Automator workflow of the month: Add Spotlight comments

  • Spotlight issue -- preferences ignored

Hi, I have another issue that can be added to the growing list of spotlight issues:
I UNCHECK "mail messages" in the list of files types under "search results" preferences for spotlight, and these still show up in my search results.
Also, when I select the order of files types, it is ignored in the window with results that pops up after choosing showa all...
Any ideas what is going on?
    Thanks,
    Artur

I actually meant the folder where most preferences are usually stored for the user--the one in the "hard drive>users>user>library>preferences" folder
But it should work for the system-level preference folder as well!
However, I just noticed this: You can search for preference files in the enclosing "library" folder's search window as well, so apparently you don't need to go down to the "preference" folder directory!
I still don't know why you can't search for preferences at the highest level--why do we have to drill down to a "library" window to search for preference files?

  • Add Spotlight Comment from file?

As I understand the way the *Add Spotlight Comments* works, the input is the file (or set of files) to be modified, and the added comments can either come statically from the workflow, or as user input if the workflow permits *Show Action When Run*.
I have a moderately ugly shell script that downloads and examines a succession of files and builds a description (just a few dozen words) that I want to add automatically to those comments. At the end of my script, I've downloaded the file, and stored the comments I want in a separate temp file.
As far as I can see, Automator can't do this: I can't specify a file as the incoming source of those new Spotlight Comments, can I?
Assuming the answer is negative, two quick non-Automator followups:
    1) Is there any shell-script level Unix command that can manipulate the comments (without trying to hack into the .DS_Store files, that is).
    2) Can Applescript do this? And, crucially, where's the best current help for Applescript for someone that hasn't touched it in many years?

Automator can do it, although some of the actions may not be obvious. Text (for example, the results of your ugly shell script) can be placed into a variable for later use, but you can also get it from a file. If your description/comment is in a plain text file, you can use the Combine Text Files action to get the text, then place it in a variable that can be used with the Set Spotlight Comments for Finder Items action.
    Example:
    1) Get Specified Finder Items (add your description file) (ignore input)
    2) Combine Text Files
    3) Set Value of Variable {Variable: whatever}
    4) Get Specified Finder Items (add the file you want to comment) (ignore input)
    5) Set Spotlight Comments for Finder Items {drag variable whatever to the text field, Append to existing comments}

  • Another Yosemite speed issue

This is yet another Yosemite speed issue. I've done some reading around and read the FileVault can cause an issues, I took a look and I've always have FileVault disabled.  I installed EtreCheck and the results came up with a lot of RED and "FAILED". Unfortunately, I have no clue how to being to read this and was hoping someone could shed some light onto this for me.
Here are my results: (Just trying to right-click and paste this took almost a minute)
    Problem description:
Installed OS X Yosemite and now Macbook runs extremely slow. I have had FileVault disabled the entire time.

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Major issues with a add-on Emoji Cheatsheet and missing add-ons in Firefox 37.0.2 ?

As soon as Firefox updated me to 37.0.2 installed I started having issues with missing add-ons and missing tool bar buttons.
Instead spending all day reloading add-on from "Refreshing" Firefox I just started going through my add-ons and disabling them and restarting (4-5 at a time) till thinks went right. I spent a hour last night till I got down t last few that could because it . I left FIREBUG disable and things started working as is and Compatibility Reporter started working too.
Well I woke up to start Firefox and to my shagrin it was messed up again. So I went back through and and remembered the few last add-ons I re-enabled right before I disabled Firbug. So I disable it and sure enough things went back to normal.
    What Add-on was that?
'''Emoji Cheatsheet :: Add-ons for Firefox'''
When the icon for it shows on my toolbar everything else shows, yet when it goes awal many other things malfunction. I tried reloading Firfox several times and nothing change. So when I disable it and restarted things were normal and working.
    Anyone else experience this?

Sorry, the post about clearing your cache was meant for a different question.
I suggest opening a ticket on the issue forums for this plugin: https://github.com/johannhof/emoji-helper/issues
P.s. If it helps, I currently have 16 add-ons installed.

Hi all. So I'm trying to mount my 2TB thunderbolt g drive on my iMac 5k (OS X Yosemite), and it just won't mount. It doesn't even show up in disk utility.
I know the drive probably is not the issue, because I tried it out on my macbook pro (OS X Mavericks), and it mounted instantly. Is Yosemite the issue with this? Has anyone else run into these problems??

Do you have another Thunderbolt drive that you can use (or borrow) to make sure the Thunderbolt port on your iMac 5K works?
