Yosemite spotlight

At WWDC i seen that in the spotlight of Yosemite it could offer web search results if you set
  To set up.
But in fact he did not offer an Internet search results (or iTunes, App Store) may rarely, I checked with friends and saw the same thing.
So how did I could see online results  Yosemite's spotlight?
Or maybe he could not do it anyway?
thanks!

AFAIK Spotlight in Yosemite can only use Bing. If you are not seeing it, make sure it is check in the System Preference panel for Spotlight.
There are Spotlight alternatives like Alfred and Launchbar can use different search engines to search the internet and have an interface much like Spotlight's.

  • Web Search not working in Yosemite Spotlight

    Hello,
One of the major features of Yosemite was that Spotlight could directly return web search results. But unfortubnaltly that isn't working for me.
Anyone else facing this issue or has already figured out a work around for this?
    Regards,
    Kartik Gaje

    Go to terminal and enter:
    rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
This will delete the preferences file. Restart your computer and it should work.

  • Yosemite - Spotlight NTFS external drive indexing issue

    Good morning!
Yosemite's spotlight doesn't seem to find any of the files on my external NTFS hard drive. I would like to know whether there is  a way or not to get it done.
PS: I've added it to the privacy tab, removed it and it still not indexing. Also used the  "sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist" code in terminal.

By default, OS X ships with NTFS read capability. OS X would need a third-party (Tuxera, Paragon) NTFS driver package that enables NTFS write functionality in order for Spotlight to index the NTFS drive.

  • Yosemite Spotlight no longer displays Definition field to bring up dictionary

This is how I invoked the dictionary in Mavericks
This is what I expected in Yosemite (image from another similar post - not mine)
This is how it now appears in Yosemite on my machine
It appears that the link to the Apple "Dictionary" is broken. Advice gratefully received.

Testing on another Yosemite machine, I found the Spotlight Preference "Definition". I had the lightbulb moment when I realised the new term "Definition" replaced "Look Up" in Spotlight. checked the box: Voilà!

Bing Web Search in Spotlight does not produce web results, Spotlight still only searches for local content. Spotlight Suggestions works fine though.
    Troubleshooting:
Ticking/Unticking the Bing Web Searches option in the Spotlight Menu, Restarting.

I have same problem and even ticking/unticking does not work for me. Now my spotlight is still searching local content only...

  • Yosemite Spotlight doesn't give results in the internet?

I already check the web results in spotlight preferences but still it won't search the net. Im from australia.

    Might be corrupted Spotlight preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Spotlight.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try a Spotlight search.
If that doesn't help, reindex Spotlight >  Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes

I am only getting local information from my mac book pro when I try a spotlight search. I am not getting any web content from bing or wikipedia at all.

  • Yosemite spotlight issue : Couldn't add Spotlight Metadata Privacy password to keychain

    Hi,
I get many error messages from spotlight mdwrite of this type : -[MDKeyRing initWithService:label:comment:] (/SourceCache/Spotlight/Spotlight-917.1/xpc-services/mdwrite/MDKeyRing.m:294) failed assertion -- Couldn't add Spotlight Metadata Privacy password to keychain!
For information, I already reindexed everything by running mdutils commands.
I am also experiencing many bugs with Mail searches and saving multiple Mail attachments, and I think this is related since this mdwrite bug always appear in the log with the corresponding actions with Mail (such as save attachments).
    Could anyone help?

  • Spotlight shortcut does not work (ctrl + space)

Spotlight shortcut does not work. When I press ctrl + space, nothing happen. When I click on magnifier icon by mouse, everything work well.
In Spotlight configuration and also in keyboard shortcut configuration this shortcut is present and marked as active.
I've also tried to disable and enable back this shortcut but it still not work.

    Hello Zeleznypa,
For me, the default shortcut for Spotlight is Command - Space (not Control Space).
OS X Yosemite: Spotlight keyboard shortcuts
Open Spotlight to start a search  Command (⌘)-Space bar
Open a Finder window with the search field selected  Option-Command (⌘)-Space bar
I changed the shortcut in System Preferences to Control Space and it still worked with that.
Could you check your keyboard with the Keyboard Viewer?
OS X Yosemite: Use the Keyboard Viewer
    Take care,
    Nubz

  • How to change typeface in Yosemite

I have a Mac mini from 2010 and an iPhone 4s.  In other words all the goodies in Yosemite, which depend on the newest hardware are unavailable to me.  I loaded a test version of Yosemite on my machine and was appalled at the ugliness of the typeface which totally spoiled the otherwise best interface on the market.  If I am to upgrade, which I will presumably be forced to sooner or later, I have to have the interface typeface back at the 10.9 and earlier style.  Is there any way to get that?
    TIA

  • How to lock trash in Yosemite.

I found a great answer but unfortuntly the article attached was "over" my head so I need to have it a bit more step by step. Here is my issue.
I have a computer classroom with about 25 computers including my Macbook pro. I am currently upgrading to Yosemite in my Macbook Pro as the Remote desktop and airdrop and so many other "connectivity" issues are happening. Right now half my lab is running Mavericks and the other is on Yosemite. I am upgrading all to Yosemite to eliminate any issues.
I need to be able to "lock" the trash to eliminate students trashing work. There was a great article here with an explanation on how to do this through the Terminal. I am not this advanced and do not want to try this with out a step by step. Can someone explain this further please?
Again I want to be able to "LOCK" the trash can in the student log in accounts.
    Thank you!

  • How to use Finder in Yosemite?

I'm looking for a simple guide on how to use the Finder app in Yosemite.  I have a number of questions, mostly around limiting search results.  I find that Finder and Spotlight generally produce too many search results.  For example:
    1. How do I find folders (not documents) on my Mac whose names start with the letters ABC?
    2. How do I ensure that hidden files are included in the search results?
    3.  Once I find the file I am looking for, what's the easiest way to copy the path name into another Finder window or tab, so that I can see all the files within that path name?
I know how to accomplish the above tasks, but my techniques are multi-step, and they seem clunky and inefficient.  So I assume there must be better ways.  Hence the search for a good training guide.  Thx

  • Spotlight Doesn't Search Online

Following the upgrade to Yosemite Spotlight no longer searches online so i have to open Safari first and search in the browser bar.  Is this a bug or am I nut using Spotlight or its settings correctly?
    Thanks
    Duncan

    Hello there duncal,
If I understand correctly performing a search in Spotlight does not show any web searches at all. It seems to me that the Bing Web Searches is unchecked in the Spotlight preferences.
    Spotlight preferences - Mac Help
To open Spotlight preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Spotlight.
    Search Results pane
Choose which categories appear in Spotlight search results: Select the categories you want to include, deselect those you don’t.
