Yosemite startup
I have a Macbook Pro Retina(mid 2012). Since installing Yosemite, my 27" Thunderbolt display WILL NOT turn on until I've logged in through the laptop's screen. Is this a bug?
Yes that is normal, it's new that's all.

My Yosemite startup screen (grey mac logo and bar) has frozen after installing. The progress bar is stuck at halfway.
HI've had the same issue and despite clearing the PRAM and powering on and off repeatedly this is what has (at least temporarily) resolved my issue:
I've done this 3 times and sometimes it works right off the jump other times I've had to wait a bit and try again or power off and try again, once the start up screen is frozen hit Command : Option : Shift : Esc and a window should pop up "You restarted because of a problem..." from there you can go to your desktop. I haven't found an actual resolution to fix the problem but this does get you into your computer.

Black screen/progress bar with Yosemite startup
Since installing Yosemite on my relatively new imac, when I boot up i get a black screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar, which takes about 90 seconds to load. I've tried disc first aid, verify/repair permissions etc , done a new install from my backup disc but it still persists. is this now the way of the yosemite world?

BruceTry booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Since the startup of your MacBook Pro fails after you log in, it appears that one or more items that are starting up when you log in are causing this issue. To test this, I would suggest that you temporarily supress all login items and see if the computer starts up normally. See this article for how to do so -

Temporarily prevent items from opening automatically when you log in
If you see the login window, press the Shift key while you click the Log In button, then release the Shift key when you see the Dock.

Yosemite Disk missing from Snow Leopard Startup Disk
I recently installed Yosemite in a triple-boot configuration with Snow Leopard and Windows 7.
Note: to anyone trying the same I learned the hard way that the Yosemite has to go after Windows or Windows' 4-partiton limit will be exceeded and it won't install. My partitions look like this: (Invisible) EFI, Snow Leopard, Windows 7, Yosemite, Recovery.
But the topic of this post is the fact that the Yosemite Disk does not appear in Snow Leopard's Startup Disk in System Preferences. I've seen a few other posts about this and want to share a work-around I've found. Here's the procedure:
1) Boot into Yosemite.
Open System Preferences>Startup Disk.
If the Yosemite startup disk is not already selected, select it and reboot.
2) In terminal, enter these commands:
nvram efi-boot-device > ~/desktop/YosEFI
nvram efi-boot-device-data >> ~/desktop/YosEFI
The YosEFI name is arbitrary; call it whatever you like.
The > and the following code on the first command creates a file named YosEFI on the desktop and sends the output of the first nvram command to it.
The >> on the second command appends its output to the existing YosEFI file. A single > here would overlay the output of the first command.
3) Open System Preferences>Startup Disk.
Select the Snow Leopard disk and reboot.
4) Copy the YosEFI file from the Yosemite desktop to a folder of your choice.
5) Create a file in Text Editor (I called mine BootYosemite - with no .txt extension), and put (a version of) this code in it:
sudo nvram -f ~/Documents/YosEFI
For simplicity this example assumes the YosEFI file was saved to your Documents folder. Adjust the path as appropriate.
6) Open Terminal, navigate to the file created in Step 5 (BootYosemite), and make the file executable:
chmod 755 BootYosemite
7) You can now double-click the BootYosemite file and it will open a Terminal window and prompt for an Administrator password. When the command runs, it imports the efi parameters from the YosEFI file to NVRAM and the next system restart will boot into Yosemite without the need to use the Option key.
Of course, it's debatable whether being required to enter an Administrator password is really any easier than holding down the Option key, but for those who want a work-around for the missing Yosemite in Snow Leopard's System Preferences>Startup Disk, this is one solution.
8) If you really want to get creative, you can put BootYosemite in your ~/Library/Scripts folder (create the folder if you don't already have it) and run it from the Menu Bar.
To add a Scripts option to the menu bar, open AppleScript Editor (It's in Applications/Utilities), open Preferences, and check Show Script Menu in Menu Bar. You'll need to re-logon (not reboot) to pick up the new script and show it on the Menu Bar.Simpler is to use the donationware QuickBoot app.

Is it possible to use an external HD to startup a MacBookAir (late 2011)?
My external HDs include
1) OWC Mercury Elite Pro 3tB (Firewire 800) with Yosemite startup partition

How Will Yosemite Logical Volume Group Affect Two-Partition Drive?
After installing Yosemite, my Macintosh HD became a Logical Volume Group. Now, in Disk Utility, both the Drive and the Volume have the same name — Macintosh HD. I want to use one of two partitions on an extra internal drive in my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) as a bootable clone of my Yosemite startup drive, using SuperDuper!. When cloning is complete, will my spare drive become a Logical Volume Group with a renamed drive? Will that effect the other partition, which is a bootable Mavericks clone?
Thanks for the tip. I see its a common trouble. But i stuck a problem that cannot be solved with this method cause i dont have revertable logic volume.
SO i cannot install system now. There's no visible disk any more. -
Popup upon Startup indicating I can send Texts via my iPhone
I'm sure this is somehow due to a new feature for those with iPhones, iOS 8.1 and Yosemite, but the thing I'm not getting is what is New about this. My MacBook Air showed the popup upon Yosemite Startup saying if I want to send Text Messages via my Cell Phone Number just click OK ...then a Code popup said to insert it into my iPhone. I decided not to continue setting this feature up because I have been sending Messages via my MacBook Air using my Send and Receive Cell Phone Number forever. The next time I picked up my iPhone a popup gave me an opportunity to insert the Code for this Text Send capability from my MBA.
Maybe I have only been sending iMessages and not following through with a Text from my MBA ...who knows?I have now found this feature on each Device and enabled it. No problems although I don't actually know what now can happen that is New.

Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) right now, but my computer is partitioned, to where I can use Yosemite on it also. I upgraded Lion to Yosemite, (really love it) but the Startup disk with Yosemite no longer showed up like it did when I was on the Startup disk using Lion. So, to be able to switch back and forth between systems, I used the Terminal and typing in (diskutil cs list diskutil coreSorage revert lvUUID) which would take me to the gray screen with the two disks, plus recovery disk. I tried restoring Yosemite using SL, but I interrupted it in mid stream and I tried going back to the Yosemite startup disk and although the partition is still there, but it shows up as "Untitled," and it's empty. I went to the app store and I'm in the middle of downloading Yosemite again, but I don't want it taking over the partition with Snow Leopard on it, because I don't want Yosemite taking over completely. I have to many important files on SL. Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I can't seem to locate it, which leads me to believe that it will be installed over my SL. Am I right about this? Any help would be appreciated and if you let me know right away it would also be appreciated, since I can't keep the downloading procedure for Yosemite on pause forever. IWork, iLife for OS X Yosemite not updating
Hello.
I have a new MacBook air 13" that I bought a week ago from an Apple store. It came preinstalled with OS X Mavericks, iWork, iLife and all the other basic apps.
I was able to install OS X Yosemite, but when I tried updating iWork and iLife it says it's not registered with my account and it does not allow me to update. What should I do?

Startup disk is the normal one, Macintosh HD
Serial Number: HA HA, no.
Also, I do NOT run any other OS or OS X version on a virtual disk.

Boot older version of mac as a second partition
Hi I'm running OS X Yosemite on my mac currently and want to make a partition so that I can boot OS X Lion. I have the InstallESD.dmg file and a 4.7GB re-writtable DVD that I've burnt it to and I have created the second partition ready for the operating system to be loaded onto. As far as I can tell, I just need to hold Alt while the mac restarts for me to select the DVD as the startup disk for the installation to start. When I click on the disk however, it just boots into the regular Yosemite startup disk. I want to install Lion from the disk I've created onto my second partition.
Any ideas?

DanIt won't boot from the DVD. What you need to do is put it on an 8 GB USB flash drive properly partitioned and formatted for OS X.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive. Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time. -

Black boot screen and startup manager on mid 2014 rMBP after upgrading to Yosemite
After upgrading to Yosemite I'm experiencing black booting process. Moreover, I noticed that the startup manager, which we access by holding the option key, has the black background too. I didn't like the Yosemite, so I downgraded back to Mavericks, but I still have the startup manager with the black background and the initial screen during the startup sound is black too, and after that the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up, which is typical for Mavericks. I want my startup manager to have the grey background as before. And also, before there was the grey screen during the startup sound, not the black one. How to revert all this to the previous state? I'm experiencing all this on my rMBP, 13-inch, mid-2014.
I want to revert because after downgrading back to Mavericks my rMBP started freezing terribly, especially on youtube, ebay and app store. And it's not just the web browsing, it's freezing when navigating in finder too. I know there are many experienced users here, so I hope that somebody can help me with this. Before upgrading to Yosemite my machine was running flawlessly.nobody?
