Yosemite stuck on boot screen - Possible M4 SSD issue

I had OS X Mavericks prior to installing OS X 10.10 Yosemite. I downloaded Yosemite through the App Store on to a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13 in.
  Model Name:    MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:    MacBookPro9,2
  Processor Name:    Intel Core i5
  Processor Speed:    2.5 GHz
  Number of Processors:    1
  Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
  L3 Cache:    3 MB
  Memory:    Crucial 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
  Boot ROM Version:    MBP91.00D3.B09
  SMC Version (system):    2.2f44
  Sudden Motion Sensor:
  State:    Enabled
The download was fairly quick as I upgraded as soon as the update came out. It took about 30 minutes and then locked up before the next 7 minutes to finish the installation. I have FileVault turned on and would enter the password to login to the drive and my user account. The progress bar would get to 50% and then stop. I waited about 30 minutes the first time and 45 minutes the next. After multiple reboots, the same issue would happen.
I rebooted into OSX recovery system (Option-R during bootup) and was going to reinstall OSX Yosemite. After unlocking the boot drive, entering in my Apple account info, it said it was going to take a few hours to redownload and install. I stopped it 5 minutes into the download and rebooted the Mac using the OSX recovery system exit > reboot method. Luck would have it, I was able to login and complete the install. I updated all the applications to the latest version (outside of the App Store), such as Adobe, Silverlight, etc.., missed this step prior to installed Yosemite. Everything was working fine.
During normal work, I had a lot of applications open from VMware Fusion, Office for Mac, Firefox, and then when I opened Preview, the Mac crashed with the grey screen of death. When I rebooted by holding down the power button for 10 seconds, it would only let me unlock the drive and was stuck loading up to 50% without ever getting past the progress screen for 30 minutes. I went back to OSX Recovery System and performed the reinstall OSX Yosemite and backed out again as I did before thinking it would let me log in. After rebooting it failed to get past 50%. The next reboot I was able to login.
I started thinking about the 256GB M4 SSD Firmware and noticed on the http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd-firmware it stated upgrading from 040H (what I was on) to 070H would fix the following issues. Granted it stated for Windows and not Mac, after updating the firmware, I have been shutting down and rebooting without issue (crossing fingers).
The following is a summary of changes between 040H and 070H, which are independent of operating system:
Resolved a power-up timing issue that could result in a drive hang, resulting in an inability to communicate with the host computer. The hang condition would typically occur during power-up or resume from Sleep or Hibernate. Most often, a new power cycle will clear the condition and allow normal operations to continue. The failure mode has only been observed in factory test. The failure mode is believed to have been contained to the factory. This fix is being implemented for all new builds, for all form factors, as a precautionary measure. The fix may be implemented in the field, as desired, to prevent occurrence of this boot-time failure. To date, no known field returns have been shown to be related to this issue. A failure of this type would typically be recoverable by a system reset.
I upgraded the current Mac to a Crucial M4 256GB SSD and moved the stock 750GB hard drive to the cd-rom bay. I was able to install the update to 070H using an bootable USB stick and the method from http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/Updating-firmware-on-Macs-without-a-sup erdrive/td-p/61259. I did have to disconnect the second drive (just lifted the connector to the motherboard) as it would not allow the Firmware update to start with the drive connected.
Seeing if this helps anyone else out with Yosemite locking up during a boot. I did not enable TRIM as I read it can hurt the M4 SSD since it has a garbage collection.

I rebooted my machine and was back to either getting stuck at 50% or just seeing a black screen. Both times I was using a Kensignton USB 3.0 Multi-Display Adapter as well as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI port. Once I power off (hold 10 second power button), unplug all external monitors, I'm able to boot into the OS.

  • Yosemite stuck on boot screen after attempted disk repair

So I had and old 500Gb laptop hard drive lying around and a sata reader so I figured see if I could make use of a free 500 gigs. I plugged the drive in and it didn't mount so naturally I checked Disk Util. After attempting to mount the disk with no success, I attempted to erase it which resulted in the unable to write to last block error. Finally I figured I'll run repair and see where it gets me. Repair was taking forever so I saved the job for overnight. Before I went to bed I started the repair and let it run. At some point I woke up to a slight click of my entire system shutting down, followed by the startup chime. While concerned I didn't think anything bad would happen so I figured I would wait until morning to simply walk over and log in, but here is w the problems started. When I got to my computer in the morning it was still on the grey boot screen with the apple and the bar. I booted into recovery mode. Succeeded in repairing the external 500 gig drive then checked my Macintosh HD and ran repairs. A few small things were repaired and I expected it to boot fine, but no. I haves restarted many multiple times and given it a while to load, I have reset the p-ram, I have done everything i know how to do. I really need this computer for school, so a quick solution would be great. What happened and how do I avoid this in the future?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

  • HT4623 My phone is stuck on booting screen!

When i remotely updated my phone , It restarted it and it was stuck on the booting screen. I pluged it into my computer , And it gave me the option to restore , So I just tried to restart it again and it was stuck in booting screen so i decided better to restore my phone than have a brick , So I plugged it back in to my computer and my computer dosent recognize my phone at all. What can I do?

I was able to fix it by putting my phone in DFU mode by holding the sleep button for 4 seconds , and without realeasing the sleep button holding them both for 12 seconds and then without releasing the home button letting go of the sleep button and holding for 10 seconds or until my computer saw it (My phone was plugged in the entire time)

  • Yosemite Server stuck at boot screen

    Hello,
we have/had a Mac Mini Server running. He is administered via screen-sharing. We encountered problems with LDAP / Open Directory and I was trying to unload a launched configuration via:
    sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openldap.slapd.plist
when the screen-sharing session was interrupted. I had to shut down the server pressing the on/off button and connected him to a monitor in order to find out what went wrong.
Now he gets stuck at half the progress bar of the apple boot screen.
Starting in single user mode I can:
    1) $ /sbin/fsck -fy
and get: "The volume ... Appears to be ok
    The Volume was modified."
    and:
    2) $ /sbin/mount -uw /
    after
    exit
    I get out:
Bootcachecontrol: Unable to open /var/db/Bootcache.playlist: no such file or directory
pfctl: the use of -f option, could result in flushing of rules present in main ruleset added by the system at startup.

We have only Server running on the machine, but it would be nice to save the configuration somehow.
    1) Is there a way to repair the system from command line?
    2) Can I simply copy the missing files from another system (kernelcache, Bootcache...)?
    3) Can I install Yosemite from the recovery partition and keep the server installation?
    I hope someone can help...

The Apple Support told me to turn off the computer, then turn it on again, then press and hold "Option + Command + P + R" until de relaunch song play for the second time, then release it..... it worked here for me.... hope to help you too !!!

  • IPhone 4 stuck in boot screen - Why did it happen?

I've got an iPhone 4 16GB Carrier Unlocked, and out of the blue, I turned it off and when I proceeded to turn it back on in the end of the day, it got stuck in the boot screen. The problem is already resolved, I've got it into the DFU mode, restored it and lost everything I've had added since the last backup, obviously. The thing is: I have NEVER attempted to jailbreak it or install any sort of custom firmware, whatever. I didn't make any recent changes on it, over any aspect; I didn't install any apps nor update the ones I have, recently. Still, I had this awesome surprise — and I keep wondering: What could have possibly happened to my device, that led me to this?

I've tried TinyUmbrella to see if that can fix the boot loop issues, but it hasn't worked....
I've deleted the gsp Apple jargon in the host file in my Windows>system32>drivers>etc folder,...
It's not a jailbroken device, or water damaged or anything.
If you got error 3194, used tinyumbrella, and had to edit your hosts file, your phone was in fact hacked, possibly attempting to downgrade the iOS.  Error 21 suggests a hardware problem.  You need to take the phone to Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.

  • Stuck on booting screen (loading progress bar)

My Mac stuck on the booting screen (the grey page) then shuts down, I've opened the recovery mode by holding the command+R then opened disk utilities -> verifyied my desk -> found errors -> repaired my desk -> Got red message "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible!" then i decided to create an image to store it on my external hardrive i got this message "Unable to create image input/output error"
What i have to do ? I need to back up my files and get my MAC running well !

You have already tried repair, and it did not fix enough to get your Mac working again.
Now buy two hard drives and enclosures.
One is a Large Backup drive. USB-2 enclosure will suffice, but the bigger the better. It does not have to be a notebook (2.5-in) form factor.
The Other is a candidate for a replacement for your internal drive -- but do not move it just yet.
While it is still in the external enclosure, Install Mac OS X on it and boot from it. Now you can get some work done if needed, and can use the full power of Mac OS X and additional Utilities to attempt to repair your drive and salvage your files. Mac OS X is about 400,000 of those files, so if they cannot be saved, it does not matter.
Once you have salvaged what you can and are confident that the new Boot drive works, you can swap it inside your MacBook and get portability back.

  • My phone is stuck on "boot screen" and my lock button is broken what can I do?

I need help!  My phone has been stuck on the boot (black screen/white logo) and my lock/home button is broken and doesn't work.  I have already let the battery die and tried connecting it back up that way but it stays on the boot screen.  What can I do?

  • Curve 9300 Doesn't start. Stucks at boot screen

    Hi,
I've got a brand new Curve 9300 less than a week ago. I've updated it's OS to version 6, and it worked perfectly.
When I attempted to configure my email, it automatically asked to update with my carrier's email setup software. I just chose ok. I got three warning messages, which I don't exactly remember but it was about something may not function correctly (regarding to version difference). I just continued installation, and it asked for a reboot.
When I rebooted the mobile, it goot stuck at the boot screen. Then nothing! The thin status bar bellow BlackBerry's logo fills up until it's full, then nothing happens. When I wait for longer time (a few minutes), I get a message on a white screen with a tiny font with "App Error 606", with one option of 'RESET'.
I pulled out the battery and restored it a few times, nothing different.
    Notes:
The LED does not do anything, except for a single red blink when it reboots
The keboard seems to be responsive. I get the Alt and Shift indicators in the top right corner when I press them
The power button doens't seem to cause any response
    I appreciate your help.
Edit: The Desktop Software shows that the device is not connected, even though it's attached to the USB cable.
Edit: The Alt-Shift-Del combination causes the system to go to a blank white screen with that "app error" mentioned above

  • Lenovo Yoga 8 Tablet stuck on boot screen

Hello!I have a Lenovo Yoga 8 Tablet and today I can't turn it on. It sticks on boot screen. I tried to factory reset but nothing changed. Any help?

Think I got it sussed ... now if I can only remember how I did it !!Several posts on this forum had the problem with it stuck on the Lenovo splash screen and Fumangord1 on here mentioned  "If you hold the volume buttons in and hold the power switch it should give you the boot options. Select the recovery mode with the up volume button then press the down volume to ok it. Mine comes upo with the android icon and NO COMMAND." Well, I tried this and got the same BUT went a bit further with it, just by pressing buttons in a random fashion ...When the Android robot icon comes up with NO COMMAND, I think I then pressed the ON button and another Boot drop down menu popped up.I think I tried this next bit twice, but can't remember which one worked, but just have a play with the new options to see which one works for you !?First I think I selected the top one which is something like REBOOT and I then the second time I tried the bottom option which is something like WIPE CACHE and hey presto .. . it now works with every app and setting intact !I'm only going by what I remember doing - it might not be quite right, but at least there does seem a way round the issue ! God know's why Lenovo themselves don't reply to these posts and tell us how to fix their bloomin' machines !!?? Good luck everyone !

  • Help! Stuck on boot screen (no spinning) after Lion upgrade.

Did an install of Lion on husbands week and a half old macbook pro 15". Right as I started the installation I had to get up to help my little one go back to bed. Briefly checked the progress of the install when I got back to the computer, still had some time left so I went to watch TV. Got up to see the boot screen up and decided to give the install more time just in case. It's now been about 2-3 hours on the boot screen. What should I do. I should mention the drive already has a bootcamp partition as well as the SL partition. Please help! I'm really hoping I didn't break his new computer (Tech really isn't his thing so it's up to me).
This is the screen I'm stuck on. Cursor works but that's it.

Re-starting and re-installing from the bootable drive I made seems to have fixed the issue. I'm performing a disk and permission repair now in disk utilities as a precaution now. Reinstall from disk took forever. Unfortunately didn't have any available USB or Firewire drives to try an alternate means of install.

Replace battery, then plug in charger.

This process will erase all data in your phone memory. Via JSanders.
    1) Make sure you have Blackberry Desktop Manager installed.
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop/
    2) On your PC, go to Start > Run and copy and paste the following line exactly (meaning with the quotation marks):
    "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader\loader.exe" /nojvm
    3) The Application Loader Wizard will appear -- click "Next."
    4) In the "Connection:" drop-down menu, you should see "USB-PIN: UNKNOWN". Click the "Next" button.
    5) You should then see a list of applications ready to be installed for your Blackberry. Hit Next and Finish and you are well on your way to getting your Blackberry back to life. Congrats! Just don't disconnect anything and let the lengthy process finish completely.
NOTE: If you do not see a list of applications mentioned in step 5 and instead see the message "The Blackberry Desktop Software does not have Blackberry Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer. Contact your wireless service provider or system administrator," then you must download Blackberry's Operating System for your carrier and device.
BlackBerry Device Operating System downloads: http://www.blackberryforums.com/blackberry-device-specific/
Just select the appropriate device model from the list and download the latest version. Install this download and follow the above steps again and you should be on the right path.
IF the above does not work or help, You will need to use JL_Cmder to wipe the device and subsequently load the OS to the device. Follow the instructions here:
    Download JL_Cmder http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/18789-jl_cmder.html

  • E7 stuck at boot screen (white nokia)

    Hi,
Yesterday was my first day trying to use my new E7 as my primary phone.  I am having a major problem where the phone is stuck at the white nokia log boot screen and it keeps restarting.
In the days before, I updated from the original 13.x firmware to 14.002 though the ovi suite.  After about an hour of usage yesterday, I opened the on phone ovi store application and it said an update was required before I could use it, so I let it update OTA.  After the update, I opened the application and tried to get Angry Birds Free.  The download started, then I pressed an in app button to do something else in the mean time and the phone froze up during the screen transition. Restarted with 8 second power cycle.  Back into the ovi store to continue the download, this time the phone restarted on its own halfway through the download.   Back into the ovi store a 3rd time to continue the download, phone froze up.  Restarted with 8 second power cycle.  Wouldn't get past the boot screen.
Yesterday I was able to get the phone to connect to my computer and I attempted to reinstall 14.002 firmware 2x, which seemed to work but I was still stuck.  I was able to call Nokia Customer Care and  the support person tried some of the same things I did.  Then without a sim card in the device we connected to my computer, tried to reinstall firmware, it complained about no sim card.  I put an old non-working sim in the device and the home screen came up all of a sudden.  So it appeared to be fixed.
I'm back to the same issue today, only now my computer won't connect to the phone.  I've tried 10 times.  Once it connected but only as a storage drive, not to Ovi Suite.  Customer Care is closed today, I don't know what to do. Please help!

pleased to hear it, the E7 is a great handset, love mine, hope your new handset serves you well
