Yosemite stuck on preparing to import mail messages

I just bought a new Macbook Pro and imported my files from an external hard drive using Lion, then upgraded to Yosemite.  Now I can't open mail-it is stuck on "preparing to import".  Is this a bug in Yosemite?  How long does it take?  There are so many problems with Yosemite-not a smooth transition at all. Also, Yosemite now doesn't recognize my external hard drive (WB My Book) so I can't back up my computer and WB says it's because it doesn't yet have an upgrade for Yosemite because Apple hasn't provided them with the info!

Does this involve the forum you posted in - iPhoto for the Mac - in any way? If it does pease explain
As to Yosemite - yu have personal problems with your system - My family has upgraded 6 or 7 Macs without a single problem - the vast majority of the millions of upgrades have have not problems - as at least as far as iPhoto is concerned only a ver few problems reported are due to either Yosemite or iPhoto 9.6 for Yosemite - almost all are either user error or data problems
So if you have a problem that you want solved post it in the correct forum and provided details about you system and about the symptoms of your problem and any error message - eliminate editorial comments as they confuse people trying to help and add nothing to the process

  • Trouble importing mail messages

After some software trouble (repaired by Apple technitions) I now need to import my Mail messages back into the Mail program but the process does not move beyond the second scree "Preparing to import messages". I waited a better part of 40 minutes without any change.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Imported Mail messages not loading

I have upgraded to Mountain Lion (finally) and the imported messages into my new version of Mail take ages to load, some of them dont load at all. I just get the spinning cartwheel of infinity and nothing else. Newly received messages are fine. Its just the older pre-upgrade ones.
    Can anyone help?
Referring to old emails is something I need to do on a daily basis.
    Cheers

  • Importing Mail Messages with .emix extensions

Inadvertently I copied all my 8,000 older email messages into a folder thinking
I could copy the old messages into a new folder into mail on my other Mac. When I try to copy these .emix messages, it will not allow me. When I try to IMPORT these messages from mail, I cannot highlight the mail box to import.
I am able to read these messages when I open each one up individually.
Does anybody have any idea's of how I can get the 1.5gb of email messages into my new computer. I do not have any of the older plist files from the host computers library. I only have the folder with 8,000 .emix mail messages.
    Help!

    Rob,
I only have the folder with 8,000 .emix mail messages
If you put those messages in an correctly named folder hierarchy, Mail should be able to import them fine:
    → Import.mbox
    →→ Messages
    →→→ 1.emlx
    →→→ 2.emlx
    →→→ …
    →→→ ###.emlx
(the actual numbers don't matter - no need to renumber them from what you have)
You should then be able to point Mail's import function to the folder containing the folder "Import.mbox" and in the next step can select a mailbox called "Import"
(If this does not work, you can also move the "Import.mbox" hierarchy as described above into ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and quit and restart Mail. You will then see a new local mailbox called "Import" which is initially empty. After selecting "Mailbox → Rebuild" from the menu you should see your messages appear)

  • Importing Mail Messages into Mail

i have copied mail from an older computer across to my current macbook.
I can read the emix files,,, they are in a folder called Library/Mail/Mailboxes/xxx.Mbox/messages (copied across from the older computer)
I Can't import these into my mail ???
I thought this would be a easy thing but i tried for days with no luck,,,,
They are there ,, i can open them and read them as individual emails with filenames such as 950.emix But how do i get them into my Mail App ???
    Thanks
    Glyn

    Glyn,
You can import a mailbox, or groups of mailboxes, and this can include a mailbox of the standard type, such as the Inbox from an account, BUT not as the new Inbox, but only as another On My Mac mailbox. However, once imported its messages can be transferred as desired, to the account Inbox (and Sent) now on the new computer.
Import as type OSX, and import from each account folder, and the Mailboxes folder separately.

  • Help with importing Mail messages from cloned system

I decided to format and reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac. Before I did, I backed everything up and, following Apples instructions, thought I had saved all my mail messages etc. It didnt work, or at least, I couldnt get it to work!
So, I need help getting my messages back.
I have Time Machine on an external firewire drive but cant access backups earlier than my recent new install. I also have a clone of my old installation on an external ( USB) drive that I can boot to that contains all of the earlier Mail messages I want.
How can I move the mail messages from that account to my new installation?

  • Mail stuck on "Preparing to Import"

Yesterday, seemingly out of the blue, the mail program shot me an error message saying something to the effect of "mail app had been corrupted"...I didn't think much of it but tried to restart it and it took me to a welcome screen and prompted me to "click to import messages or hit cancel to do it later." Well, if I hit continue the app just hangs indefinitely and if I hit cancel the app just closes. I've tried to work through some of the solutions presented in the forums, namely, moving my com.apple.mail.plist file to the desktop--there was a similar solution offered that instead involved moving a file from the cache folder but for some reason I don't seem to have that particular file. I'm uber frustrated and about to pull the rest of my hair out...please help

  • Import Mail messages

I've just formatted my MacBook and now I want to restore my messages into Mail: what I've to do? I copied the messages into "INBOX" folder, but they are not visualized on Mail. I also tried to import them from "file->import mailbox" but it didn't work.

What are you restoring from? It would help to know what you backed up and how. In general there are three things you need to restore from your backup for Mail:
/Home/Library/Mail/ folder - the entire folder.
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.mail.nnnnnnnnnnnn.plist (where "nnnnnnnnnnnn" is a numeric value in hexadecimal code.)
Because you have already opened Mail new versions of the above have already been created. Before copying the above from your backup be sure to quit Mail, then delete the new Mail folder that was created.

  • Importing Mail messages

Recently, I was using a replacement machine for a week while mine was in the shop. When I put the work back onto my repaired machine, everything worked smoothly except for the fact that the email messages (which I DID get back into exactly the right folders) would show up in Mail, but as a blank message. You can manually open them by double-clicking and all the info is there, but Mail simply doesn't show them in the Mail window. I assume there's an index or catalog file somewhere that needs to be rebuilt. Anyone have any idea how to do that?... Thanks!

Try rebuilding the mailboxes and see if that helps. You can find it under Mailbox -> Rebuild.

  • Recovering Mail messages from Time Machine drive

I recently deleted some important Mail messages do to my iPhone and iMac Mail sync via the Cloud. The messages are likely (for sure) on my Time Machine drive, but I don't know a simple way to find them. Right now enter Time Machine and can go User> Me> Library> Mail and the into the inbox of the related Mail account and then I am arbitrarily looking in subfolders with # labels, and seeing lists of xml (or whatever they are) files. The are in no order, and when I open them I find messages willy nilly from past dates.
Is there an easy way to actually find these messages, to search or read the messages in the Time Machine drive to recover specific ones. The method I describe above is simply not workable.
    Thanks.

Note that you have to open the Time Machine app while you are using the Mail window. If not, a Finder window will pop up and it will not work. After opening the Time Machine app, you should see a screen like this one:
Then, use the arrows to navigate through your backups, and when you have found the mails you want to restore, select them with the Command key and press "Restore". Note that OS X is in Spanish in my computer, but you should see the text in English.

  • Import mail from deleted user account

I created a new administrator account on my mac mini and deleted the old one but chose to retain all of the user folders and files.
I would like to go back and import mail messages from a pop mail account in the deleted user library, but can not navigate
to the library when mail asks for the location of the files to import.  Is it possible to find those files?

Never did find a solution to this. However because we are using IMAP accounts most of the mail was cached on the client Macs. So I offlined them, loaded Mail, copied all the mail into local mailboxes, recreated the users, went online and copied the mail back into the new hierarchy.
Still can't believe I did such a daft thing!
