Yosemite takes about 2 minutes to shut down

Hey everyone, I just got done installing OS Yosemite last night, and now it takes over two minutes for my MacBook Pro 15" to power down/restart. How do I fix it? Or do I have to just deal with it?

Yes it is.  Thank you very much.  You appear to have adaquate hard drive space available.  Now try the following....
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • T430s Takes Several Minutes to Shut Down

    Hey all,
I've got a T430s running Windows 8.1. The machine runs great and boots very fast (probably helps that I bought an SSD); however, when I shut down, it takes several minutes (5+ minutes) to fully power-down. The screen goes black, but USB devices continue to have power and the fan still spins until finally it powers down. The same issue happens when I close the lid and put the machine to sleep.
Before anyone blames Windows 8.1: This didn't happen right after I upgraded to 8.1. It seemed to start several days after the 8 --> 8.1 upgrade, and I'm not sure what variable changed to cause this.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Nothing in either the System or Application logs that would indicate that there were any problems shutting down. I can see where User32 indicates that the "power off" shutdown has been initiated, then about 5 more log entries in System after that, all of which appear to be normal (i.e. related to services shutting down). The time on these records are all within a few seconds of each-other. I don't see any outliers that are a few minutes out (i.e. things logged several minutes after the shutdown).
One thing I did just notice is that I see the following Critical notice from Kernel-Power after booting up from shutting down:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
So it's not even going down cleanly. But I still have no idea what the offending driver/service/app is.

Knock on wood, this seems to have been my problem as well.  I stumbled on this thread after dealing with this ridiculously-long boot times for the past several weeks.
I just reinstalled McAfee Antivirus and my Macbook Air booted up in less than 1 minute.  No more hanging on the boot-up progress bar.  No more hanging after I click on my user's avatar on the log-in screen.  Bootup would often take 5+ minutes and sometimes never complete.
    This has been SUPREMELY frustrating.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING YOUR RESPONSE!!!

  • Why it takes long time to shut down after i upgrade to OS X ver 10.8.2?

why it takes long time to shut down after i upgrade to OS X ver 10.8.2?

Can't really say, but I see this occurring on all of my Macs since the 10.8.2 update and keep reading about it at several other Mac user boards.
Bottom line: it's a general problem, but more of an inconvenience, than a serious problem. Probably will be solved with the next update.

  • 20 Minutes to Shut Down

For some reason as of late my iBook has been taking it's sweet little time in shutting down... I run what spyware software I can find on it along with Norton Anti-Virus... They both come up with nothing. This just started to happen recently after I install MSN Messenger... I have since Removed it and now it takes soooooo, long to shut down completely... I there is anything any one can do that would help in this matter that would be great...

This has gotten so bad that I had to reinstall Tiger. I am not happy about it and have to download over 200MBs of Updates, but if it helps me out in any way, it will have done it job.... If it still happens I know that it is not MSN Messenger (cause I have not yet re-installed that yet) and then know that is it indeed 10.4.4... I just realized that I didn't have that problem up until I install 10.4.4. But I will see how it acts on a clean install of Tiger...

  • Mac OS X takes very long to shut down because processes are still alive

    Hello everyone!
Since the latest update to Safari 5.0.1, iTunes 9.2.1 and Trackpad Update, the system takes unusual long to shut down.
The screen gets the usual blue, a spinning wheel appears and is there for about 20-30 seconds.
Before the updates, it was about 5-10 seconds.
When booting in verbose mode, it tells me at shutdown that some core system processes (among them launchd and other boot stuff) are still alive (or, as the OS says, "PID XXXX is still alive").
The only thing to workaround (which isn't the solution for forever!) is to run "sudo shutdown -s 0" on the console.
Is there a way to avoid this waiting for still-alive processes?
    Thanks in advance!

I have just restored my hard drive and now I too have this same situation. Have you been able to resolve it. If so would you be good enough to tell me how.
    Cheers,

Also my mail program is slow to open. I do have emails archived but my trash is always deleted & I'm trying to keep my "sent" folder not too full
Occasionally any programs I'm working in (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc) takes time to process whatever task I'm doing. (This happens maybe once or twice a week, not often)

  • My 3gs won't hold a full charge for long, and also won't stay in any ap for more than 2 minutes and shuts down. I have replaced the battery, same symptoms. Any ideas out there?

My iPhone baffles me. It started doing this and I was told it was the battery, so I replaced the battery. Nope, same issues. Here they are. After a full charge which takes only about an hour, it rapidly loses power after another hour or so. While in my apps, I can keep them open for maybe 2 minutes and they shut down. When I do the double tap to see whats running, the apps I opened are, however they are't. Wierd stuff here folks I hope someone has had this before and can help me out. I don't have a job and cant' afford a new phone.
    thanks for help in advance.

Double-tapping the home button does not show apps that are running.  This is not a task manager, it is merely a list of recently used/accessed apps.
Basic troubleshooting of the device is reset, restart, restore.  Has a reset or restore been tried?
Check to see if updates exists for the apps, this could be a simple issue of a badly coded or buggy app that needs to be updated.

  • Takes 2+ mins to shut down.

I wile back when I had to recover my Mac from my Time Machine back up, I done that and afterwards my shutdown and restarts take 2+ mins.
    Here is what happens:
1, I click shutdown then it quits ever thing. (this takes about 2-5 seconds)
2, Then it goes to the gray spinning thing in the middle of the screen. (not the spinning wheel of death)
3, Then I listen to my HDD and I hear it doing it's stuff for about 5-10 seconds then it stops and the HDD is idil (not doing anything) and it stays at this for about 1-2 mins (some times longer) ) :
4, After about 2 mins it will finally shut down.
Any one know why this is happening?

I had the same problem up until a few minutes ago so I'd like to share my experience. After repairing disk permissions and checking the console, both to no avail I re searched the topic on here. One thread recommended looking at your activity monitor. I saw a few programs that popped out at me, including google updater and lexsleeperx. lexsleeperx sounded fishy and I googled it. It was something left behind from my lexmark driver (Lexmark drivers for max are crap). I force quit it and removed it from the startup items folder and erased it permanently. Shut down my laptop and took not but 5 seconds to go to a beautiful blank screen. No scrolling circle, etc. So go check your Activity monitor, hopefully you will find some help there.

  • Why does plugin-container.exe start 15 times (and then stop) during shutdown (taking MINUTES to shut down)?

FF takes forever to close (minutes). When using process explorer I see that as many as 15 instances of plugin-container.exe will be opened during the shut down process. I think this means that a plugin is crashing. I disabled all of the plugins and it still happened (but maybe not so many times). An obvious answer is to leave FF open but that seems kinda dumb. I haven't seemed to be able to find this addressed anywhere. I am using updated Xp, on a many year old machine. Please help.

  • Flashing file folder with a question mark when starting my macbook after a few minutes it shuts down, any ideas??

When turned on our Macbook flashes a folder with a question mark in the center screen, then it shuts down after a few minutes.  Doea anyone have any ideas how to boot the computer back up?
    Cheers

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on yourkeyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

You shouldn't have to use the power button. When you choose Shut Down from the Apple menu in the upper left corner, how long does it take? How long have you left it trying to shut down? It isn't instant.
