Yosemite Time Machine unresponsive windows

I am trying to help a colleague with Time Machine on his iMac.  He is running OS 10.10.2.
When he selects a folder then clicks "Enter Time Machine" it appears fairly normal. No error messages appear, no buttons are grayed out. However, instead of the front window in the stack being interactive, it appears to be a static graphic.  Files can't be selected. Clicking on a file, or anywhere else in the window, results in Time Machine just moving to the previous hour's backup window.
I have tried a few different search words and phrases but have been unable to locate anyone else with this problem.  Do any of you recognize these symptoms, and can you give us any suggestions on how to resolve this?
Thank you.
Paul

In the Finder, right-click or control-click the folder icon and select
          Show View Options
from the contextual menu. In the dialog that opens, select None from the Arrange by menu. Close the dialog, enter Time Machine, and try again.
Another reason why items in a snapshot might not be selectable is that the time-travel view is open on a secondary display. Move it to the primary display, or if necessary, exit and disconnect the external display.

  • Time machine would back up only the first time after I shut off my imac and started it up again.  Then it would fail or claim it could not locate my external Hard Drive even though it's icon was showing in the time machine dialog window.

Time machine only ever backed up the first time it runs immediately after I start up my computer after it has been shut off.  All other back up attemps fail.  Recently it stopped recognizing the icon for my external hard drive in the time machine dialog window where you select the hard drive to back up to, and turn on and off the time machine function.  Now the external HD icon only shows up on the desk top but no longer in the dialog box. I just tried shutting the computer off and turning it on again and now the light is on, on the external hard drive but the icon does not even appear on the desk top.
The external hard drive is a 1TB Seagate. The drive still has plenty of unused capacity.  I ran a diagnostic test on it. It said the disk needed repair but the repair function would not work. The message stated that it could not be unmounted and repair is not available because the disk can't be written to. The Mac OX utility said the disk can still be opened but can't be changed nor repaired.  The external HD is not S.M.A.R.T. supported.
I haven't tried replacing the cable yet. Is that the next thing I should try?

What Mac OSX version are your running ("iOS" as shown in your profile cannot run on a Mac computer)?

  • Can't browse/navigate in time machine - finder window completely unresponsive

Since installing Mavericks when I go into time machine the finder window is completely unresponsive.  I can go backwards and forwards and the date menu on the right seems to work fine, but I can't interact with the finder window.  This essentially breaks Time Machine for me.
I'm running time machine via USB on a LaCie Terabyte drive.
I've restarted the machine and am about to do a hard shutdown, maybe that will help...

This is not a solution, ratehr it is an observation. Often when I open Time Machine, the screen appears to freeze, but if I wait (patiently or not so patiently) it will eventually "come to life" and begin paintingthe screen. The same thing often happens when I select a date back in history. I finally figured out the delay is caused by TM tracking through all the thousands and thousands of multi-links to create the model of the system at a given point in time. In other words LOTs of CPU cycles, not to mention disk I/O are being used. My case is aggravated by the fact I am using a Time Capsule and all of that I/O has to go through the WiFi network.

  • Since I installed Yosemite, Time Machine is not doing any backup. It just keep coming with the following message in a window: "Backup Failed. Time Machine could´t back up to "....... Time Capsule". What can I do start backing up again?

Time Machine not working since Yosemite was installed.

I had this issue too and went through all the great suggestion found on this site, but finally was able to resolve it after looking at the system.log to see the reason it was failing.  By using terminal and entering:
    sudo grep backupd /var/log/system.log
I saw "Backup failed with error:11".   Then looking above, I saw many "Error:  (-36) SrcErr:YES /Applications/" messages.  After "Applications" I saw the culprit files that were causing Time Machine to fail.  I deleted some Apps that I didn't need and found Time Machine would get farther than before.  I then looked at the system.log  again and saw it failing on the remaining Apps.  I was able to use Time Machine to restore these App directories from a couple months ago before the Time Machine was failing.  Now the problem is resolved.  Whew! It seemed to be choking on corrupt files and these can be corrected by restoring earlier ones that were not corrupted.
Well, I thought I should share this with others that may have run into the same issue so they can save time.  Hope it helps!

  • Restore impossible with Yosemite Time Machine

I usually never have a problem backing up or restoring and rarely have to do anthying by make sure Time Machine runs and completes.
However, I may have gotten lax and not checked it yet after upgrading to Yosemite the other day.
When I try to open Time Machine by clicking the Time Machine icon -> Enter Time Machine
it immediately comes back with the popup - "Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk.
When I click OK it looks like it tries to bring up the interface but fails and just brings up a finder window.
The Time Machine disk is up, accessible and has space in it ... roughly 8TB total, 7TB used and 1 TB free.
The Time Machine disk Backups.backupdb is inaccessible and has the red minus sign on it.
I'm scared to change any permissions or and none of the other questions asked about this here have
any suggestions that have worked yet.
Is there a bug with Time Machine under Yosemite, and if so when will it be fixed?
    Is there a workaround?
Should I open the permissions on the Backups.backupdb, and to what?
Has anyone gotten TM to work under Yosemite, or figured out what's in common with we who have this problem?
If it's permissions that does not seem to serious.
Everything else on the system seems to be working OK.

Try E4 in the 1st linked article.

  • Time-machine unresponsive

Since upgrading to Mac OS X Yosemite, I can't navigate backwards in time anymore, on any folder or document. Nothing.
The ONLY date I can get to is the most recent backup — which is useless.
The arrows are grayed out, the date slider slides but does nothing.
Backups are apparently available for 2 years back (4TB backup disk), but I cannot access them.
    Any thoughts?

ok i found something that works

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • Time Machine and Windows Home Server 2011 - Why no worky? (Original WHS worked fine)

So I've had an original WHS (HP Mediasmart) for years, thought it was time to upgrade...built a new server using WHS 2011 and everything on the windows side works great.
I'm not a mac guy, so only mac in the house is my GF's which had no trouble backing up to my previous WHS mediasmart using time machine, it was perfectly happy with it.
With WHS 2011, it seems to absolutely hate it; but it REFUSES to give an error. Just goes to "preparing" for about 2-3 seconds then immediately back to "next backup at X time".
I've done the tweaks in terminal to allow it to use network drives for time machine (which I didn't have to do when it was backing up to the old mediasmart, so I'm assuming maybe the mediasmart installer for OSX did that itself?)...The mac sees the server, sees the share, I can copy data to it and from it, just time machine refuses to use it (it allows me to select the share as the backup drive, just doesn't actually backup to it).
I've also tried creating custom sparsebundle files in terminal per some online guides/how-to's to get it to work...no go...used the wired ethernet ports mac address and tried it with the wireless ones too...neither worked.
    What am I missing here?
    It's Mac OSX 10.5.8

    Mcdonsco,
Have you reviewed the logs on the computer you are trying to backup? What does it say in the console?

  • Can I use the same drive to backup with Time Machine and Windows Backup?

I've got a 1TB external hard drive that I'm currently using for Time Machine backups and also it stores about 300GBs of music. Can I partition the drive to add an NTFS formatted partition and use that partition with Vista's Backup/Restore feature? If so, how do I partition the drive? Forgive me, I'm a neophyte when it comes to Windows. Also, I don't want to lose the music files already saved on the Time Machine partition.

While you can add HFS+ volumes to an existing drive, adding NTFS requires taking chances: change to FAT and then convert to NTFS.
I'd invest in another backup. I don't even rely 100% on any one backup method; drive; let alone TimeMachine. A bootable backup should also be part of your strategy for OS X. So I would create a smallish 40GB emergency boot volume - for OS X use only.
For Vista, I use the built-in features of Ultimate/Business AND Prosoft Engineering DataBackup PC. Norton Ghost started out okay but gradually deteriorated, though their 2009 360 2.0 or something....
I would not want to use WinClone except as one-time 'snap shot' or emergency; useful when moving to a new larger hard drive, and if your Vista partition is small and not 100GB of files.
I'd look at 500GB+ drive to use solely for Vista backup and media files.
MacSales has $79-89 FW800/400 case for SATA drives, and just throw a good 640GB WD Caviar in for $78 and good to go.

  • Partitioning Hard Drive for Use with Mac (Time Machine) and Windows

I have a brand new Imac on which I am also running WIndows Vista through Boot Camp (sweet, by the way). I have a large external hard drive on which I set up Time Machine easily enough. I would like to partition the drive somehow so that I could use half the drive to separately back up files on the WIndows side, but I can't seem to do this. Any suggestions? Is this even possible with Time Machine?

You can use Disk Utility create two partitions. Choose FAT for the Windows partition and Mac Extended (Journaled) for the Mac. One limitation of FAT32 is that you can't write files bigger than 4GB. You can reformat this partition as NTFS within Vista which will allow bigger file sizes but you won't be able to write to this partition from within OS X without other utilities. Also you can't write to the OS X partition from Vista without other software.
Time Machine will not be able to back up the windows formatted drive partition.

  • Yosemite time machine file restore problem

I'm trying to restore some files (iPhone backups) in OS X Yosemite, but am encountering a problem.
I can locate the files I need in Time Machine. When I hit restore the 'Star Wars' UI exits as I would expect, and the 'preparing to copy files' dialogue box appears.
At this point, it goes no further. I also get the following message in the console:
15/11/2014 6:00:30.406 am Finder[236]: setting error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=3840 "The data couldn’t be read because it isn’t in the correct format." Any advice on how to address this will be greatly appreciated. I'm currently verifying the backup in Time Machine, but other than that I'm out of ideas.

Jimbo, have you looked in the system’s Trash?  Just see if it needs to be emptied to free up space.  As Eric mentioned, I’ve only done a complete restore by wiping the disk, reinstalling the OS, etc. so I’m just guessing in your situation something is still lying around.
You could also look in Spotlight for a folder (whose full name I can’t recall now) that begins with the name “Previous System” or something like that in your boot drive; it is created to archive your previous system in case you want to revery to an earlier version.  If your system is fine now, it is safe to delete that folder - just remember to empty the Trash.

  • Time Machine, FileVault & Windows Backup Best Practice

I read a lot on the forums about people wanting the best way to backup, when they had FileVault and also Windows files.
This is what I did, I have a 250 GB Lacie external drive:
    1) 2 Partitions: 177 GB Mac OS Extended, 55 GB FAT32 (This disk was entirely FAT32 and MacOS Disk Utility wouldn't resize it to make space or even recognize the unpartitioned space I created in Windows, using a third party tool. So I resized in Windows, created a new ext2 partition, connected to Mac and erased it as Mac OS Extended. Mac sees 2 partitions now and automatically wants to use one for TimeMachine)
    2) I use FileVault on my home folder, only for personal pictures and documents. I keep the iTunes music folder out of my home folder
    3) Use Time Machine to back up everything but my home folder
    4) Create an encrypted image of my FileVaulted home folder on the same backup disk that I created. For ease, I use the same password as that of my login account. I used the Disk Utility's Image from Folder option for this.
So My pictures and documents are encrypted on my machine, they are copied as one encrypted file into the backup drive, and the rest of my machine is backed up by File Vault. I do not have to log out, though it is a manual step for me to create the Image from folder. I don't mind doing that for now as I will need to do it only when I add new pictures to this folder. I would then make a new image on the backup drive.
I think this setup will work for me, if I do find things I can tweak I will post a follow up.

I set Super Duper to Back Up my PowerMac and to shut down after completing the back up, then i went to sleep. Six hours later, I woke up when I heard the fans spinning profusely and the Mac still not 'shut down'. Got following error log. Does anyone knows what has went wrong? Have I potentially 'fried' the CPU?

  • Yosemite Time Machine with Synology slow

    Hi all,
now im trying to run a time machine backup (50GB) since more than one week.
I don't now the bottleneck MacPro or the Synology Disk Station. But the access to the disk station
works fine, also normal network file transfer is running with a good performance.
Only the backup is running and running .... latest session he only managed 12 MB in 5 hours ?
In addition Yosemite 10.10 needs very long to start the backup (up to 1/2 h).
Im very happy about any ideas to fix the problem.
    best regards
    alex

    A couple suggestions:
First, run Disk Utility on the external hard disk backup volume. It will take a long time; expect at least an hour.
    Then:
Turn "off" Time Machine if it is not already off.
Rebuild the Spotlight index according to Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes (summary: drag the entire source volume to the exclusions list, click OK, then remove it by clicking the minus ("–") button.)
    Next:
Navigate to the following folder by selecting the entire line (triple-click to select it), then control-click, and from the contextual menu that appears, select Services > Reveal in Finder:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Drag the entire folder to the Trash, reconnect your backup device if required, wait for it to mount, and turn Time Machine on again. Select Back Up Now.
This will not create a new backup nor will it erase your existing ones, but the values shown in the "backing up xxx of yyy" message and progress bar will be inaccurate until TM finishes the subsequent backup.
Determine if that fixes the problem.
Other macs (older MAC OS Versions) running perfect BackUps with the synology NAS in the same network.
Since that configuration is known to be unreliable, you do not have a backup strategy for those other Macs; you only have the illusion of one. Good luck.

  • Time Machine to Windows Vista?!

I just downloaded windows vista on my MacBook as a 32GB partition. I was wondering if there is a way to retreive my saved music library from itunes in Time Machine and unload it on the windows vista partion.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Not directly since TM will not work in Windows, but you can transfer the iTunes library provided your Windows partition is formatted FAT32 and not NTFS. If the latter then you have a problem since OS X cannot write to an NTFS formatted volume.

  • Is it possible to restore a Yosemite time machine back up to Mavericks?

I downgraded from Yosemite to Mavericks but I only started backing up when I was running Yosemite so once I downgraded from Mavericks I found that time machine couldn't restore my backup. Is there anyway I can get around this or do I just have to upgrade back to Yosemite? The reason I downgraded by the way was that Yosemite made my Mac a bit slow and laggy. Thanks

I would recommend you to restore your files manually (in other words, going to the backup drive and copying the files you want to your Mac's hard drive), because Migration Assistant might mess up everything.
If you are going to install OS X Yosemite again, do not restore the backup or you will get those performance issues back. Instead, restore your files manually as described above.

  • In Yosemite time machine icon does not indicate when saving.

I am using an iMac (20 Inch), early 2008, 5 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Recently I updated from Snow Leopard to Yosemite OS X 10.10.2.
In Time Machine I can back up to an external drive however the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar does not spin to indicate that it is backing-up as it did with Snow Leopard. What can I do to restore it to its previous behaviour?

    Joh,
Since the release of Mavericks, Apple removed the rotation animation.
There is no user capability to change that behavior.
