Yosemite Trash will not empty

Since updating to Yosemite, the Trash will not empty.
Any suggestions?

Try holding down the option button while trying to delete the Trash. If that doesn’t work, here is some more information.

  • No matter what, TRASH WILL NOT EMPTY - even though there is nothing in it!

Here's my problem. The trash can icon appears full. When I open the trash it says I have one item in it, but nothing actually appears to be there. I can click on "Empty" and I hear the trash emptying sound, but the icon still shows its full and the trash still says there is one item in there. I've also tried a Force-Empty Trash and a Secure-Empty Trash and I still get the same problem. I've restarted many times as well.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Try my software* Force Empty Trash:

I move it to the desktop and it disappears. I secure empty and it comes back. Any ideas how to get rid of it and what might be causing it?

does this file have any strange characters in its name? Do you have bootcamp?
if yes, this might be a windows ghost. boot into windows and run [chkdsk|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265].

When trying to empty my trash, it will display the pop-up bar, which seems to indicate it is working, but will not empty the trach, then displays an "Error -8003" and asks if I want to STOP or CONTINUE.  Trash will not empty.
Not sure what is wrong or  how to resolve.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Just the Option key. Third from the left on the bottom row.

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for details. IIRC, bad move to manually remove stuff from TM.
Totally agree. NEVER EVER EVER manually delete stuff from a TM. Right click and delet the backup from WITHIN the TM app. If you cna "put back" stuff you inadvertently deleted, try that, but you may have to reformat your TM and start over.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

as chamar suggested look at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html

I have had this problem for close to a year. I have an Extreme base station, two Airport Express's and multiple G4 Mac's with up to date software. I have spent a huge amount of time trouble shooting, resetting, reapplying software and finally calling Applecare without any help. It would be great to get this problem solved.

  • Yosemite macbook will not get on wifi

I have a 2011 MacBook that is running Yosemite that will not get on wifi.  I have over 100 MacBooks, 2007 to 2014 that are running on my school's network, but I have one teacher computer that just recently quit accessing the wireless.  I have tried zapping the PRAM, I have gone into the Keychain Access and removed passwords, I have opened in Safemode, I have turned wifi off and then back on, and I have tried a few other things that I can't remember.  The curious part is that it will let me on other networks, it appears to be the school network that I am denied.  Any suggestions?
