Yosemite Upgrade/Clean Install Extreme slowdown/Low CPU usage
Hey so i upgraded to Yosemite on my mid 2011 (or 2010 according toApple account) imac. Ive experienced extreme slow down, after trying many things i did a clean install and its still acting the same. I've noticed that my CPU usage is usually low and it only goes up when the computer decides it wants to run normally for a minute. For example I'll be playing a game (elder scrolls online) get 20 to 40 % usage, but for some reason, that usage will drop out of nowhere, and make the game lag.
It takes anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes to open most applications, even a finder window or system prefences... ive ran repairs, disk permissions, tweaked settings like reduce transparency, im just at a loss. Mavericks worked fine and i dont have a time machine. Ive heard replacing the Dock.app with a mavericks dock.app could work but no one has that file online
Please help, let me know what you need from me. Apple on the phone said "its the luck of the draw!"
I'd like to note i tried a fresh boot camp install , and the window side of things is also sluggish.

How to tell if Yosemite is clean install or upgrade from previous version
My brand new MacBook Pro arrived last week, with Yosemite already installed on it.
Having issues with WiFi (after coming out of sleep mode, mbp keeps its self-assigned address rather than getting an address though DHCP or using its old address), I was searching for support on the matter, and one of the solutions often suggested was doing a clean install of Yosemite if the mbp was upgraded from 10.9.
Seeing that the mbp arrived with Yosemite pre-installed, I'm guessing that it is a clean install, but I'm not sure.
I wonder if there is a way in telling if the OS was upgraded to the current major version, or if it's a clean install? Even if Apple only ships clean installs, it would be helpful to know if I need to give support to one of the mac-users in our company if it's a clean install or not.On my system, the Yosemite upgrade (performed on Oct. 23) left quite a bit of residue that would not be present after a clean install. Black Screen After Windows 8 64-bit Upgrade (Clean Install) on TouchSmart IQ508A (IQ500 series)
Hi there,
Just installed Windows 8 and am getting a black screen after booting up like many others. I currently have disabled the graphics driver and this has solved the black screen issue but I can no longer use my web cam for Skype (although web cam works for W8 Camera App oddly).
To date I have tried the following:
Loading up the latest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website
Attempting to use the drivers for Windows 7 both in compatability mode and normally. I unzipped SP44488 to get this working
I know many others are having this problem so I really would like someone from HP to respond and state whether a Windows 8 display driver for the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS is being developed.
I ran the compatability wizard prior to the clean install and it came up with no issues so I am very disappointed I am having these problems.
I've found out that HP have a customised version of the above card so that explains why the Nvidia drivers dont work so I believe HP is therefore obligated to provide a driver.
If anyone else is having similar issues please respond as this will hopefully lead to more action.

SteveI'm in the same boat. On my IQ804, the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS card crashes when I use NVidia's latest Windows 8 driver and Microsoft's LIVE UPDATE drivers. I have to resort to the Standard VGA driver in order for the pc not to crash into a black screen.
I read on another forum you can try installing a July 2012 version of the driver from NVidia and that should solve the problem. I tried it once. Using the July 2012 version, the screen would stay on longer, but eventually it crashes into a black screen...but definitely more usable than the latest from NVidia and Microsoft.
I too have heard that HP used a customized version of the graphics card and that's why neither HP nor NVidia's drivers work.
I also tried installing the Nvidia GE Force 9300M GS drivers for Windows 7 that I downloaded from the HP website. It didn't work either. It actually failed to install altogether, saying my system is incompatible.
As is, the pc works fine. But videos and games that require motion is noticably choppy.
Any help from HP?? -
Beachballing and extreme GUI latency with low CPU usage
I generally only have two applications open. iTunes 11 playing MP3s of about 128kbps, and latest Google Chrome with up to 4-5 tabs. Usually I have gmail open, Facebook, and maybe 1-2 sites such as YouTube or Slashdot. I don't have any servers running.
The CPU load is usually 90% idle. The system load hovers around 1.5 for some reason. Though at times it jumps up to 3.5 even though CPU remains at 90% idle. I read a ton of Facebook pages. After about 30-40 page loads, Chrome stops letting me scroll. I can still click in the address bar, so I know the whole system isn't frozen. I can change tasks via ALT-TAB, however, when I do that, it takes 10 seconds for it to switch to Terminal. When Termianl is finally shown, it jumps to 90% CPU for a few seconds, and updates 5 times in a row, quickly, like a stuttering video, and then it is normal. If I activate Expose by moving the mouse to the bottom left corner, it shows the Dock right away, but then it just sits there frozen for 15 seconds, and then it shows the windows and whatnot. If I switch to the Finder and click on an icon, it doesn't do anything. I then click on another icon. Nothing. I then try to draw a bounding square on the empty desktop. Nothing. Then after about 30 seconds of being frozen, the system does EVERYTHING I did in a quick hurry. It selects the first icon, the second, draws a square, selects another icon.. etc. It seems to be queueing all my actions but not responding to them immediately. If I try to delete a file, the beachball shows up, and then after about 30 seconds it shows a progress bar, even for a tiny little text file, the progress bar takes 5 seconds, and then it removes it from the desktop. If I press Mac-T to open a new tab in Chrome, I get a beachball and it takes up to a full minute before the new tab shows up!
While all of this is happening I've been monitoring my system with top, the CPU keeps at 90% idle! And the load is usually below 2.0! I have a Core 2 Duo 2.1 gHz MacBook 13" with 2GB of RAM, and there's about 25 GB free on the main disk. There is also an external firewire drive connected. Every 5 minutes the Mac OS wakes up the drive from sleep even though I'm not using it, and while the drive is starting up the whole system freezes for 5-10 seconds again!!
What the **** kinda joke of an operating system is this?!?!!? I thought Macs were multitasking and everything! I'm seriously concerned.... I"ve never had these problems in Windows, and never had these problems in Linux. ***?!!!?! I can't use more than 5 tabs in Chrome either. It's way too slow. And most videos on YouTube I can't watch unless I lower to 340p or 240p, otherwise they freeze and stuff. Even though I have enough bandwdith.. The system can't handle the video. It's so frustrating. Oh and one more thing. While scrolling through pages on Facebook, iTunes pauses at random points as if it can't handle the scrolling.... ***??!?!?!

I understand why frames would be dropped if you set high
quality and your CPU can't encode in real time however the 30% cpu
usage I am getting while encoding isn't indicating to me I have a
cpu issue.
Also as a note when I change the quality settings at no point
can I get my CPU to actually get busy enough where I think frames
should be dropping.
Another side question. Is FME mult-threaded? We all know dual
cores are popular now. Also when I say 30% if its a single threaded
app, that would mean 100% = 2 cores, 50% = 1 core, so 30% of of
that 100% would be all on one core if its a single threaded
application.
This would mean perhaps the utilization is higher than
expected and frames are dropping perhaps.
Any insight would be great.

High load averages, low CPU usage
HI,
I recently upgraded to Lion and I am noticing high load averages ~0.7 for my system. The CPU is, however ~95% idle. I am not running any intensive apps. I first thought it is an I/O issue, but I have almost 500 MB free memory, and there is no disk activity. The system is perfectly fine, with all the eye candy/animations running smoothly. Is this a bug?

Did a clean install of Lion, moved everything manually. System was clean and running fast. Then, for some reason started to slow down after a few months. My last system (macbook snow leopard) was running fine for 3 years.
I noticed HIGH load averages (over 2.5!) while CPU is ideling (only 'round 30% for user and system). System is slow and CPU gets hot, resulting in loud fan noise.
Googled a lot, did standard maintenance tasks, tried to pinpoint cause - nothing so far. Will update when I find out more. Maybe someone else has a clue or Apple releases a fix. Fingers crossed. -
VERY LOW cpu usage & memory, fans incessantly spinning / system very slow
Just did a clean install of Mac OSX 10.8 3 days ago to try and deal with this fan problem.
Updated to 10.8.4 today.
My Early 2011 Macbook Pro with 16GB RAM was running very hot with fans spinning constantly and all that with nothing going on. But it wasn't slow.
I had tried everything I could find to as afr as SMC resets and things like that.
Now, a week after the clean install, the system is superslow, the fans come on for no apparenmt reason for an hour and then go off. Off, on, off on. Nonstop.
And forget about all my files on my external drives, I can't get anything off of them mosty of the time.
Error -2, Error -50, Error -36, Error -3, etc... etc...
My free RAM hasn't gone below 10GB free but I'm getting page/out s a bunch and out of nowwhere it will grind to a halt for no reason. I've run test after test to check teh hardware, to no avail...
Also Archive.app keeps saying that .Zip restore (from Backblaze) files I'm downloading are damaged and can't be opened.
Something very wrong and I'm assuming hardware, but can't find anything. Any advice?A lot of this 10.8.4 coreaudio bug, so Included a few more...

New iMac i7 sluggish with Call of Duty 4 - low CPU usage
Hi All,
I'm a recent convert from PC to Mac.
I'm running a new iMac i7 (2.8Ghz, 8Gb, 1TB, ATI HD4850, OS X 10.6.5 ) with not much software on it.
Call of Duty 4 modern warfare runs really great and very smooth.
However, when I pause the game and go to the desktop (to check my gmail for example) - then the computer runs very very slow (like everything is moving in slow motion) - if I click to open a new tab on Chrome or Firefox then there is a delay of about 2 seconds until the tab opens, if I move the mouse cursor from side to side over the dock - then the Dock magnification is happening in slow motion etc.
I have checked the CPU usage and it's only at 36% - which I think is not much.
The memory usage is:
Free 859 MB
Wired: 585 MB
Active: 1.34 GB
Inactive: 5.24GB
Used: 7.15GB
VM Size 159.05 GB
Page ins: 4.61GB
PAge outs: 772kb
Swap used: 5.3 MB
So why is the computer so slow?
Should it grind to a halt when running a game in the background?
This doesn't happen on my PC normally.

Message was edited by: DutchGamerI think the reason is you don't have enough RAM for the about of apps you are running. Your system shows 859 MB free which really isn't that much if you are gaming. If you upgrade to 12 GB I believe the system will be fine. If you don't want to upgrade then when gaming I'd close everything else, especially web browsers as all of them continually use more and more RAM. Personally I use Safari (but I also have Chrome, Firefox and Opera on my system) and find that closing it from time to time saves RAM. What is occurring is a system running low on RAM resorts to RAM swapping and also uses HD space to swap so when it's going through these processes what you see are slow downs.

After Effects CC slow renders on iMac (low CPU Usage?)

i have an fully specced late 2013 27" iMac for working with the Creative Cloud Programms. At the moment i only have 8GB installed because of problems with my 32 GB Ram kit. I have an internal SSD for the OS and Programms, an 256GB USB3 SSD for Chache Files and a Raid 0 for my Source Files.
I am now rendering an 7min long movie shot on an Red Epic in 5K and 4K to an ProRes422HQ 1080p File out of After Effect. I mainly used the "Levels" Effect and an Plug-In called "Film Convert". No crazy animations or effects. My Render time is about 18 hours (it`s nearly finished, so this are no wrong calculations by AE).
Are this normal render times that should be expected when working with such large source files?
What makes me wonder is that the Activity Monitor show only bout 40% CPU Usage (see attached screenshot), shouldn`t that be maxed out?
I have to render out a few more similar clips, so optimizing this would be great.

I was too thinking about the HDD setup but i think mine is pretty decent. My source footage is on an 3 HDD Raid-0 with 550 MB/s read and write, i have an 250 GB Scratch/Chache SSD in an USB 3 UASP enclosure thats around 400 MB/s read and write and my project files are on an external USB 2 drive (will change to USB 3 soon). Only thing is that i am outputting my files to the Scratch/Chache SSD right now because i am still waiting for my USB 3 "Output" drive. But i don`t think the Chache is beeing used while rendering, or could that be the mistake?
The GPU is this one: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB and should be ok i think.
I hope my new 32GB Ram kit arrives soon, so i can test if more RAM helps.
I have an 4K HD (Quad 1080p) Composition which contains mostly 4K HD source footage mixed with some downscaled 5K HD shots and some upscaled 2K HD Shots. The comp is mainly a simply edit from premiere with a Levels effect on every clip and the 3rd party film convert plugin plus an Unsharp Mask on the whole comp on adjustment layers. I tried turning those off too but it wasn`t speeding up much the rendering. I have no Ray-traced comp.
I left the Render Settings to "Best Settings" for the final rendering. Altough for preview purposes i was putting the resolution to "quater" in the Render Settings and it took only about 30min for the whole comp to render.
In the Output Module i was chosing ProRes422HQ as a codec and 1920x1080 as output resolution.
The 4K and 5K shots are looking pretty good when rendering with the Render Settings turned to "quater" resolution but the 2K shot are looking terrible then. Could the long render time be a problem with how after effects handels the de-bayering of the R3D Files? -
I bought a HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j063cl Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) last November and have been experiencing high temps and loud fans at very little CPU usage or strain. When I am streaming video often times I will hear the fan speed up every once and awhile and the TZ00 will be at about 60 degrees Celsius. I recently tested the system by playing Arma 3 on minimum graphics with shadows disabled and within a minute of playtime the fan was blaring and the TZ00 was at just under 80 degrees Celsius. I did this test with the laptop elevated on a metal stand leaving the main exhaust completely clear and the majority of the bottom also clear. During the test the CPU usage was at about 20% maxing at 30% and I was getting about 35 FPS.
(While I was typing this TZ00 was above 50 degrees celsuis)-10minutes after closing arma
What's the problem guys?

N/A Exceeds 50,000 Character ruleI might sound weird but sometimes CPU runs hot in a loop. If you check in Task manager, it peaks at 3.2 GHz and won't come down. This situation is because of bios problems and HP won't confirm this problems as it is their way. I solved by reducing the processor maximum power to 80% in power options. From then, CPU wont peak itself as there is a limit and won't stay in the loop. Hot air coming from left vent is solved.
But if the chasi is becoming hot while air from vents is less hot than metal chasi, then I think its CPU fan problem. I prefer you to clean the vents by disassembling the laptop though nearest HP service or local service guy. Just clean the CPU fan and coolant pipes running around the CPU and GPU. Im not an HP expert but I found these are the issues for over-heating. Remember 60 degree is considered normal temp for i7-4700 processor. But, if you feel its hotter then check it once. Don't hesitate. -
Is it normal to have only 4-12% of cpu usage when exporting video out of ae? I´m exporting it from render queue.

I'm not saying that this is necessarily what's going on for you, but it's worth pointing out that the CPU is often not the bottleneck.
If disk I/O is what's slowing you down, one way that you can speed things up is to use three disks for your work: one to run the program from, one to store input assets, and one to write output files to.

Low CPU usage but dropping frames
Hey gang,
I am really liking the FME application. However I am having
some performance issues. I understand setting some advanced video
encoding settings can impact frame rate. This being said, I am
setting 20 FPS with great quality lower frame rate setting
selected, or also the good setting.
I understand that if the CPU is being taxed that it will
trade quality for frame rate. However I am only seeing a 30% CPU
usage in most cases it goes between 15%-30% and it starts dropping
frames like mad in high motion scenes, although the CPU is only
utilizing 30%.
The CPU is set to dedicated. I even went into Task Manager
and set FME to high priority and it still won't fix this issue. For
some reason FME does not want to utilize my CPU's capabilities.
I am running the following:
Windows Vista
Athlon 4000+ X2 Dual Core
3 GB RAM
ATI TV WONDER PRO Capture Card

I understand why frames would be dropped if you set high
quality and your CPU can't encode in real time however the 30% cpu
usage I am getting while encoding isn't indicating to me I have a
cpu issue.
Also as a note when I change the quality settings at no point
can I get my CPU to actually get busy enough where I think frames
should be dropping.
Another side question. Is FME mult-threaded? We all know dual
cores are popular now. Also when I say 30% if its a single threaded
app, that would mean 100% = 2 cores, 50% = 1 core, so 30% of of
that 100% would be all on one core if its a single threaded
application.
This would mean perhaps the utilization is higher than
expected and frames are dropping perhaps.
Any insight would be great.

Restrict Backups to Low CPU Usage Times
I have been doing some pretty CPU intensive work lately, a lot of it in iTunes. I'm seeing the spinning beachball quite a bit when doing these tasks. To make it worse, Time Machine often picks these times to do a backup. I usually just end up canceling it.
Is there any way to set Time Machine to only do its backups at time CPU usage is below a certain threshold? If not, there's an option for a future release.

Don't know if You know about the computer stonage. When You could set a
CPU to do just one task. Not so any more.
Mac computers are realy UNIX ditos. So they behave likvise.
To get it to work with better speed one has to get it from doing meaningless
tasks. This by giving it so much free space on the internal hard disk so that
it doesn't start virtual memory managment and joggling a lot of temp files.
To run iDVD I set free at least 25Gb free space on my internal hard disk and
run no un-necessary programs in the back-ground like "Screen, Energy-savers"
FileVault etc. incl. ActivityMonitor, Internet and other needless activities.
Ps. Activity Monitor - lies when running under iDVD and says that iDVD doesn't
respond. Let it be and it eventually succeedes with it's task.

[Solved] Frustratingly low CPU usage
I need to parse several large XML files and insert their contents into a sqlite database. The code works correctly, but uses 32 minutes of "real" time and only 2 minutes of "user" time.
Another developer on our project ran my script in 3 minutes of "real" time. Adding insult to injury, he was working on an old 32-bit Ubuntu distro *hosted* by Virtualbox on a laptop running Windows 7. Both of our laptops are 64-bit machines. Though his CPU cache size is 6KB and mine is 2KB, my laptop operates at 2Ghz while his runs at 1.6Ghz. edit: (I meant 6MB and 2MB, oops)
My script never uses more than 3.0% of CPU power on my laptop. However, it hits 70 - 75% CPU usage on the other guy's machine. (Stats reported by Htop.)
My theory is that there's a disk IO bottleneck on my machine. It could be reluctant to perform fsync()s rapidly (which sqlite may require to ensure data integrity). At any rate, I've disabled laptop-mode and reniced the process to make it very greedy, but it still takes 30 minutes to run! Absurd.
I'm using the latest x86-64 packages on my laptop. Any help appreciated.

The thing is VirtualBox does not correctly do fsyncs for the fsyncs in the VM (unlike e.g. kvm) so some workloads like sqlite run a lot faster than on the host. So the Ubuntu in VirtualBox tries to do fsyncs like your host linux but unlike yours those won't result in actual syninc to disk which makes it a lot faster

Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.

X-Fi Extreme Music & high CPU usage?!

I think, I have this problem since i upgraded drivers for my X-Fi. More or less, everything works fine (in games, programs, music...), but when i try to make a video or voice conversation over skype, gmail or msn, CPU hover on around 80% ?!?! When i disable card in Device manager, all those aplications works fine.

I think it's not the computer beacuse i had the same sound card in my older and much, much weaker computer and than was working fine with old drivers, but not with new ones. And I think that there are any older drivers for Win7.
Please, any ideas?I've never had pictures of the mod, as it is it wouldn't show up vey well in a photograph, not to mention that every front panel board is different from one manufacturer to another. Mine came with my Gigabyte Aurora case, but Gigabyte probably didn't manufacture the circuit board itself.
I had the noise problem when I first tried out my new Bose headphones with it and knew I needed to fix it. The main issue is the metal mounting studs that attach the board to the case front cause a ground loop with the grounds coming in from the sound card, as well as the motherboard USB headers. Having all these grounds just connected together like that is the root of the problem. By far the worst issue is the studs being connected to the foils on the board. Scraping the foil off the board where it makes contact with the studs will probably fix most of the noise. Next, cutting a gap in the foils between the incoming grounds from the sound card and USB headers will clean up more noise. If properly done, and all plugs removed from their headers, there will be an OPEN connection between any one ground wire and another, as well as there will be an OPEN between the chassis (case) and any of the ground wires. The ground wires coming from the headers should show a good connection to their appropriate socket ground on the front panel, but again, an OPEN between each other.
