What can I do? I tried to upgrade to Yosemite and it has been stuck at half way point for 24 hrs. Can I force quite or will that be bad?

Try restarting the machine, the update may have completed. Post back with results.

My iMac (upgraded to Lion) has been behaving super sluggishly.  slow to open my Word docs, Slow to close webtabs,.just so  S L O W.  Suggestions??
I have already tried restarting... I have very few programs..just the MSOffice App.  I did look at a lot of websites (looking for vacation rentals).

Well - all of the above were ultimately caused by one thing, of course the one thing I didn't replace - my 5-port Netgear 1Gb switch.   Got a replacement and everything is fine.   Lion was simply installed at the time the switch failed.

7.1.1 is certainly compatible with the iPhone 4. Just try a reset first.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • After Lion upgrade, my email has been upgrading for 4+ hours

    Is this normal?
I installed the Lion upgrade on my mid-2009 MBP. It went without any complaints. I have 8G of RAM and 200G free on the HD.
When I restarted after the install, logged in and started mail.app it said it had to 'Optimize' it and it started this process.
It has been running for > 4 hours so far. The window shows no indication of any progress being made and says it will take a few minutes.
The timestamp on my Envelope Index in ~/Library/Mail matches the start of that process, but nothing else in there shows any change.
Looking in the console I see the startup messages for the process, but no errors.
    10/13/11 7:59:08.506 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501: ([0x0-0x124124].com.apple.mail[33082]) Exited with code: 255

10/13/11 7:59:13.653 AM Mail: Upgrading Library from 4.93 to 4.93
I can see that process is consuming CPU time and I did an lsof on the mail process and it shows that as the only open file under ~/Library/Mail that it has open.
    mystic:~ jrh$ ps ax|grep Mail|grep -v grep
    33118   ??  S      2:45.72 /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail -psn_0_1200421

Sizewise ~/Library/Mail is 16G in size.
How long should this process take? I'm closing in on 5 hours with mail shut down.
    thanks
    john

I had the same experience and after 20 minutes I did it the crazy way.  I disconnected it from USB iTunes and after 2 or 3 reconnections it happened the restore was ended and it was all OK.
Be carefull: this is something to recomended by Apple but... what can you do. ???

  • Since the recent upgrade my mac has been freezing up.  Any suggestions

Since the last IOS update my laptop has been freezing up.  Any suggestions.

Do you mean OS X? iOS is for iDevices, not computers.
What, exactly, is happening? Do you have any error messages?

  • Yosemite upgrade stuck at x minutes for 10+ hours

    Hi,
This is for the 6th time I am trying to upgrade.
It was a terrible idea, never faced it in my happy 10 years using a mac.
I wanted to upgrade it, it downloaded and now trying to upgrade for 14 hours straight.
The machine is running from last 40 hours, it is a Mid 2010 macbook pro.
Simply it is stuck at 4 minutes ( this is new, earlier it stuck at 3 minutes for 6 hours ) and log quota exceeded.
    Please help.
Yes, I have tex, homebrew all these sort of stuff installed.
I promise never to upgrade to a free OS  ( unless it is my kubuntu from where Iam typing it in )  again.
But for this time please help.
I have upgraded 4 times on different macs, never ever had this much trouble.
    When it would end?

I finally decided that enough it enough, and cleaned the disk drive and installed Mac OS X.
I could back up data, and that was good enough for me.
    Everything is fine.
I suggest anyone facing the issue should do the same.

  • Ever since i installed new update of Yosemite my macbook pro has been running like crap. Any suggestions? ...

    Suggestion????

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Yosemite upgrade, stuck at 50% progress bar

Some guys faced the same issue. But I couldn't restart to safe mode with shift, and recovery mode turn off wifi doesn't help to me. I tried to verify and repair the disk and permissions as Apple Care told me when I called, but not help. I also tried to use internet recovery with cmd option R and reinstall 10.9, but after reinstallation and reboot, it also stuck with some error log file, and I couldn't save this log file to my HD because I don't have permission it said.
Anyone can help me with that? I tried to use cmd S and sudo command could't be recognized in that mode. Maybe someone can help me go to safe mode without shift and let me turn off file vault (not sure whether it's on) or delete some apps.
Or any other ways to reinstall 10.9 without losing current files? I didn't back up.
    Please help me.

This worked for my MBP 17" mid-2010 after 10 hours of minor panic watching progress bar stuck at 50%:
Reboot and hold SHIFT key to go into Safe Mode and keep holding that SHIFT key.
*Patience is the key to the Shift key*
    Keep the Shift key down.
Do not let go of Shift key until you go to Italy when the computer does its Venetian blinds thing and goes into Safe Mode.
Check whether you have any login items. Do this via via Sys Preferences > Users & Groups
It is going to be slow. You are in SafeMode.
    Remove any login apps.
Run any updates for Yosemite (e.g. Pages, Numbers, Keynote) within Safe Mode.
    Reboot.
    Remember, YMMV

  • The iCal application says it is upgrading but it has been up for hours and I cannot quit it. Help?

It is getting really annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a way to force quit the application. Press the  "Command," "Option," and "Esc" keys at the same time and a window will appear. This window will give you an option of which application you want to force quit. I hope this helps!

Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
You inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple and you don't have to download or install anything to fix it. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.
Google Chrome is known to run notoriously poorly on Macs. If you want to run Google Chrome, you may need to install more memory, upgrade your Mac to a newer model, or both. Use Safari or Firefox, both of which will run well and do not litter a system with a plethora of resource - hungry "helpers" and other constantly running intrusive processes such as those Google insists upon installing.
Adobe Flash Player is outdated. If you need to use Adobe Flash Player, you must keep it up to date. New versions appear very frequently.
You are running a torrent client. Doing so will leave you vulnerable to malware, data theft, or both.
Some users have resolved otherwise inexplicably poor performance with an SMC reset. Read and follow all the steps including those that may appear to be inapplicable or trivial.
If your Mac still performs poorly, please determine if the same problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If none of the above resolves your concern, more information is required. To augment the information you already provided, follow the instructions below.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • Mail won't upgrade, it has been stuck 1/4 way, help?

I upgraded to Lion last night and i updated to icloud.  Under system preferences and icloud, i put the check mark in for mail to work and it just thinks and thinks and then freezes up and i have to force quit.  I tried opening mail to manually add and it says it's upgrading and will take a few minutes, the blue bar is 1/4 way across and has been stuck there for a long time.  i tried removing mail, it won't delete.  And even if i remove my icloud account, and i open mail, it's still just stuck at that same place.  any ideas how to get around it?

I know this was asked a few months agoa, but in case anyone else has this problem (I did today)...restarting my Mac worked.

please help! i have just upgraded to an iphone 5 for work, so i have started to backup my iphone 4 but it is stuck on 'finishing sync' and has been for 20hours!what can i do?i need it for work tomorrow

Is this what you downloaded: iTunes 10.7?
When the update fails what if any error report do you get, specifically? Please do this before trying again:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
