Yosemite user login [Update required]

Hi All
Ive recently installed Yosemite on my MacBook Pro and when I log there is a head with a question mark with [Update required] written below. This reoccurs every time I have started my Mac and loggedin.
I input my password and it logs in but this takes a while. Anyone had this problem?
Cheers

If you go to preferences, users and groups what does it show?

• User called 'update required'

I have acquired an extra user that appears at startup called 'Update Required.' I believe this was probably created when I installed Yosemite on an already encrypted disk (I wanted to do a clean install and thought it might save time to encrypt it when erasing the disk). I'd like to know if there's a way of removing this without having to start the whole installation process again.
I have a mid 2011 iMac 27" running 10.10.1.
Thanks

Sorry posted in wrong forum. I can't move this so have recreated in Yosemite forum..

Select the FileVault tab in the Security & Privacy preference pane. Click the lock icon in the lower left corner and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. If you see a button labeled Enable Users, click it and select the users whom you want to be able to unlock the volume.
Otherwise, back up all data, disable FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, wait for it to finish decrypting (which will take several hours), and then re-enable it. You can use the computer while those operations are in progress, but performance will be reduced. You won't need the backup unless something goes wrong.

i upgraded my iMac to lion and now when i leave my desktop and it goes into stand by mode, its like a picture is taken of the actice desktop and when i want to log in the mouse point removes pixels so i can get to the user login screen this never happened ith snow leopard. does anyone else experience this and is there a fix?

I have an iMac 8, 1 that I upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was totally updated with the latest from Apple when I bought and tried installing Lion. The upgrade failed, shot my OS and I couldn't boot. Had the constant spinner on a grey screen.. did a format of the drive, hdd repair and everything came back clean... got back to Snow Leopard and all the updates on it again and then retried the Lion thing... same bs... dead duck. Crashed my system one too many times. I can't see where a few small changes, mostly app related can be classified as an OS upgrade and is not compatible with my iMac. I have the stuff running on my Mac Pro but have yet to notice anything impressive. I've always used F3 and really didn't require Mission Control. Just open you app folder for launch pad... duh? I use the hot corners anyhow. As far as Safari is concerned... as a power user, Apple missed the boat on that for me.. full screen etc.. Wow. I don't like the new Mail either..
As you can see/read, I'm less than impressed with this release from Apple but I own so many of their products that I will have to put up with it for now... somehow the MS logo should apply to this release Steve.

• Update user login field

Hi,
The user login is not modifiable from my infomation by the end users. How to make this field modifiable so that end user can modify this.

First, it is a bad idea to allow the user to update the user_login field. You could however make this modifiable by adding the field in user's self profile. But again it is a very bad idea.

Knock on wood, this seems to have been my problem as well. I stumbled on this thread after dealing with this ridiculously-long boot times for the past several weeks.
I just reinstalled McAfee Antivirus and my Macbook Air booted up in less than 1 minute. No more hanging on the boot-up progress bar. No more hanging after I click on my user's avatar on the log-in screen. Bootup would often take 5+ minutes and sometimes never complete.
This has been SUPREMELY frustrating.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING YOUR RESPONSE!!!

• Problem with OS X Yosemite - 'Update required' when opening

Hi everyone,
I updated my 2012 Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite and it seems the installation didn't fully complete. When I restart my computer I always fall on this grey screen, and instead of my name and picture there is a '?' with 'Mise à jour nécessaire' (Update required) where my name should be.
When I enter my password it's like if my Mac ended the download, and it finally opens normally. But this happens every time, like if there was a problem with this step and it wasn't correctly installed.
What can I do to fix my problem so my Mac opens normally without 'ending' the installation all the time?

You may start in Recovery mode and see if you can check &/or repair
the computer hard disk drive; or perhaps re-install the failed OS X?
•OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
There also is a method to access OS X Utilities in Recovery to see if
the hard disk drive and other items are OK. Be careful since these can
also totally erase all content from a hard disk drive if Disk Utility is used
incorrectly at that point.
Good luck & happy computing!

• New users with Global Password Policy requiring password "reset on first user login" are still prompted to reset password after entering incorrect password

The setup:
We have the option "Password must: be reset on first user login" enabled in the Global Password Policy on our 10.9 / Mavericks server. We import new user accounts into Open Directory via a delimited text file and include a default password for each user.
What I've observed and tested:
When a user attempts to log into a computer that's bound to our Open Directory for the first time, they can enter anything in the password field and still receive the prompt to reset their password. They are never notified that they entered their default password incorrectly. The password reset will then fail (as it should), but they still aren't notified that this is the reason for the password reset failure. To put it another way: Seeing the prompt to reset your password would reasonably imply that you entered the default password correctly, but that's not the case at all.
The question:
Is this expected behavior? If it is, it doesn't seem logical. If this was the case in OS X Server 10.3 through 10.7 I never noticed it. Can anyone corroborate this with their own setup? Thanks in advance.
-- Steve

Some follow up questions:
- How did you migrate (dsmig ldif or binary import)
- Did the accounts in .x have any custom password policies set?
For a "new" and a migrated entry, can you check if a passwordpolicysubentry is configured?
(search as directory manager and fetch the attribute)

• 2nd user login - limited software and files required

Hi, I need to create a second user login, preferably with access only to Word and Excel, and one folder of files. Is this possible or is all software accessible in a second login? Trying to avoid email, internet, skype, and get on with some intense and laborious work that has to be finished without further procrastination and distraction! • CRM ACE User Context Update

Hi all,
How do we update the user context of active ace users automatically. Currently the user context is getting expired after the default time of 16 hours and after that when the users search on orders produces zero results. When I go to ACE_UPDATE and update the user context then again it works fine.
Is there a way to do it automatically.
Thanks.
Neha.
Edited by: Neha Kapoor on May 22, 2009 1:04 AM

Hi Neha,
This is due to some missing authorization with users when ACE try to do a user context refresh or calculates actor again. Please put a trace on user when this automatic refresh happens (after 16 hours in your case and when user login).
Ideally, user should have required auth. be able to execute the AFU method of his/her ACE classes.
Hope this helps.

• My Macbook will not start like it normally does, it says update required. What is wrong?

My macbook says "update required" everytime i turn it on. It just shows me a grey screen and then I have to log in with my password. I cannot see my account picture either. What to do? I have recently reset my Macbook.

Back up all data.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sudo fdesetup sync
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

• Using Session Variables for User Login - sometimes they don't persist... what am I doing wrong?

Hi all,
I'm running a site that requires user login. I approached the building of this site as almost a complete newb to CF (and dynamic coding in general), and it's been a great learing experience (with lots of help from you guys).
However, I guess I never learned the correct way to handle a user login. It seemed to me that I could just test the user-entered credentials against those stored in a database, then set a session variable containg that user's record number. Then, not only would I have an easy way of knowing who this user was and therefore what info to serve him, but I could test for the existence of a valid login on every page in the protected folder, by adding this code to my application.cfc in that folder:
<cfset This.Sessionmanagement=true>
<cfset This.Sessiontimeout="#createtimespan(0,8,0,0)#">
<cfif NOT isDefined ("session.username") or NOT isDefined ("session.password") or NOT isDefined ("session.storeID")>
<cflocation url="../index.cfm" addtoken="no">
</cfif>
...and it goes on to run a query and verify that the session.username and session.password match for the store defined by session.storeID. If not, all session variables are cleared and it bounces you back to the login page. When the user clicks Logout, all I do is delete all the session variables.
This seemed to work great for like a year, but lately I've been getting reports that the login doesn't seem to persist for longer than approx. 20 minutes of inactivity. You can see I specified session variables to remain active for 8 hours (I know that seems like a drastically long login, but it's what's necessary for this application). I've only gotten this report from a few people, and I myself can't seem to duplicate it... I've tested an inactive login for 45 minutes now and it held.
SO: any reason you can think of why session variables would be spontaneously clearing for some people? Would having your router reset its IP address invalidate the session or something? Also, the problem seemed to begin appearing after my host upgraded all their servers to CF9... could there be any relation?
And on a more general note... did I go about this completely the wrong way to begin with? If so, what's the standard way to manage a login?
Lots of questions, I know... thanks very much for any answers or suggestions!
Joe

Ian,
Thanks very much - very helpful information.
Sounds like passing the tokens in every request is probably the way to go for this. I don't think it's likely that any users will be sharing links, unless they actually intend for the recipient to see their info anyway.
Is that all I would have to do, is add the tokens to every path? Would that guarantee that all the session variables would remain valid until timeout or being cleared?
Again, thanks, you've been really helpful.

Unfortunately this is the nature of HTTP web applications. There is NO state maintained from HTTP request to request. This is by design in the HTTP protocol specifications.
ColdFusion provides two methods to circumvent this limitation. Each method has limitations and caveats. They both rely on the passing of tokens between the client and the server with every request. These tokens can be passed as cookies OR URL (GET) variables. You are using the cookie method, which is the simpler and most common. You may be experiencing the limitation of this method. If something happens to the cookies the session can be lost.
You could pass the (CFID & CFTOKEN) OR JESSIONID tokens through the URL query string with every request. This requires one to add these values to every link, form action, cflocation or other request path in our application. ColdFusion provides the session.urltoken variable to make this easier to do. The tokens will be visible to the user. Also if the links with an individual token is share with other users, via e-mail, chat, social networks, etc and one of these users utilize the link during the life of a session (8 hours apparently in your case). Then that user will access the session of the original user.
Cookie session management is by far the most common choice by CF developers. If these methods do not meet your needs you would need to go beyond the HTTP limitations of web applications. One might be able to accomplish this with a Flex|Air|Flash applications that can be configured to use a continuous connection to the server. Thus not suffer the stateless nature of the normal HTTP request-response cycle.
I do not know if a router resetting would cause cookies to be discarded or otherwise invalidated. But I would not think it is beyond the relm of possibilities.

• Why do I get sent to the User Login screen to enter my password after sleep?

Hi,
On OSX Lion, 10.7.4. I recently had to reinstall the OS on a new hard drive in my iMac and now have an issue with it that I never had before.
After prolonged periods of sleep (I haven't determined what the minimum length is before this will happen), when I come to wake the computer it shows me the User Login screen. Under my user icon is an orange checkmark, presumably to show that I am the user logged in. Otherwise it is exactly the same as the User Login screen one gets when the computer boots up. I select my user icon and enter my password and the computer unlocks.
I haven't got this set up anywhere, that I know of. I don't have the 'Security & Privacy - Require password for sleep and screen saver' option checked, never have. If I do turn that on just to check, it's a very different password screen, a little popup window in the centre of the dimmed screen.
How do I turn this feature off?
Thanks,
Owen

Sounds like you may have deleted something you shouldn't have. Boot to an OS X DVD or a bootable backup, and using Disk Utility, do a repair disk, and while there repair permissions. Disconnect any peripherals, and reboot. If you get the same startup behavior, do a safe boot, by holding the shift key down when booting. If that works, try a normal boot. If neither step helps, you may need to relaod your operating system.

• How difficult to create a user login area, and where to start?

I have a website which I created in Microsoft Expression Web 4. I would like to add a user login area and tie it to an existing SQL database which is updated frequently. I am not sure where to start or how likely I am to succeed. It is for a client's
website, so I am willing (and hopefully able) to learn, but do not want it to turn into a long drawn out project.
I can code in html and css and use java scripts. I don't know visual basic or how to work within the database (it will be provided by the client). I'm open to any advice on how easy or difficult this will be without other forms of coding knowledge, and would
love any advice on the best place to start. I have found some tutorials and downloaded MS Visual Studio Express 2013, since it was coming up as the best program for this.
Thank you for any advice!
