Yosemite - Why do I get the spinning beach ball when logging in?
HI
I have just upgraded my late 2013 MBPS to Yosemite and am now unable to login at all. The actual upgrade was fraught, took a long, long time, and I'm not even sure if it completed, although when booting in safe mode it does state that the OS is 10.10. The problem I have is that I can only login via safe mode, through the normal login, after clicking on any of the user accounts I get the spinning wheel, and nothing happens, even after 15 minutes or more.
After looking at the problems people were experiencing on the forum, I have disabled the wireless function and cleared the apps that ran on login, but this still hasn't allowed me to login normally.
Is anyone else having this issue, does anyone know how to resolve it? Help, I'm at the end of my tether, and can see this fairly expensive piece of kit winging it's way out of the window very soon....
THanks
SUnflower
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I get the spinning beach ball when I open preview, it wont go away, can i somehow stop the process its trying to do?
You can quit Preview by selecting it in Activity Monitor and then clicking on the red octagon 'Quit Process'. That does not solve the issue of the beach ball' as such. Perhaps. a reinstall of the OS might sole the problem. That is simply a guess on my part.

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!
Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS). -
My MacBook Pro mid 2012 laptop continuously lags on every web site and I get the spinning beach ball very often but when I log in as a guest, everything works fine. What should I do to fix this?
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Test. -
I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

When I try to add a contact I keep getting the spinning beach ball
I have read instructions for adding new contact, but when I try to add name all I get is the spinning beach ball. Thanks for your help.
Hi,
I'm sorry you're having this problem with your contacts and Firefox. Can you tell me which email you are trying to use in Firefox, so I can research it and help you out?
Thanks,
Michelle -
Typing in Safari with the new Java update that I downloded today causes the spinning beach ball and slow loading of pages. As usual, Java is causing problems. Just once I would like to see things run without having to depend on Java.
24Golfer:
I think there's something more, because it keeps happening to me with the Finder where it says that it is not responding when I go to the Force Quit window.
Are you saying that the Finder is reported as not responding? If yes, try this:
Go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.finder.plist
Drag com.apple.finder.plist to desktop
Restart computer.
Monitor to see if anything changes, or Finder is still not responding.
Good luck.

IBook freezing up during internet use and getting the spinning beach ball
I have a iBook 1.33 PowerPC G4 with 512 DDR SDRAM running 10.3.9. I just recently had the hard drive replaced due to it failing. The computer was bought, I believe, back in 2004 so the AppleCare has run out. We also had a new power supply sent to us by Apple because the power pack was over heating. Ever since the hard drive was replaced, it runs fine for about 15 to 20 minutes, then the spinning beach ball appears. It happens every time I'm running my wireless network. I'll be using Safari and the beach ball appears. The only way to shut the computer down is by physically pushing the power button to shut it off. I'm not able to force quit out of anything. Any suggestions? I hear that it's a software issue or a logic board issue or an airport issue or etc. It's frustrating and I don't know where to start. With the bad power pack would that have caused a problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. ThanksOne place to start might be to run the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up. Also, you could use disc utility to verify and repair permissions and the disc if necessary. I don't know if that would help, but it would at least serve to eliminate some potential factors.
Good luck! -
Why do I get a spinning beach ball of death waiting for...
When I open a window or select/search for a fhile I get the spinning beachball of death while one of the four hard drives spins up. Is there a way to get around this since I'm guessing Finder is spinning all available connected drives to do it's function?
PS: also, add more RAM, 4 x 1GB should be minimum set. 4 x 2GB cost is only slightly more.
Might want to 'upgrade' and move your system to a new drive as well.
10.6.3 is from March 2010, over a year old and may as well stay current.
Those MacPro1,1 are popular still go strong, and 5355s are cheap and popular way to improve performance and give it another 2-3 yrs. -
Can't get beyond the spinning beach ball when I open mail
I am running 10.3.9 and when I launch Mail, it opens about a dozen different mail messages and the beach ball starts spinning. After a few force quits and disk utility repair permissions, I am stuck. Please help!
Thanks!
BrianTry launching Mail holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If the problem persists, you’ll have to re-create the preferences file:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem). If you have a backup of your data that includes a working copy of this file, you may try restoring it from the backup to avoid the remaining steps.
4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
5. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
6. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
7. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there. -
Every time I open the desktop/screensaver pane in system preferences it freezes. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
That's caused by a bug in automatic login, which corrupts the Desktop settings file, so delete it.
Open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. OS X will create a new Desktop file in the next startup -
?
Alright, then the problem may be software related.
To eliminate the OS as the problem, boot into your Recovery partition and elect to reinstall OS X. You will lose none of your files, only having the OS install a 'fresh' copy (always best to have a backup, of course, but this is non-destructive).
Same problem?
Download, unzip and run EtreCheck and post the results in a reply here.

Since downloading the OS X Maverick my computer has been sluggish. Never had this issue until this download. Is there a way to remove OS X Maverick or another fix?
