You Ain't Seen This One Before

Apple just replaced my 40gig iPod (for the 4th or 5th time, I lost count). Each time they send me a new iPod I just do a software Restore and then Update with the music in iTunes. Not this time. Every 10 or 20 songs it stops Updating and there's an error message with my name in it: "Attempting to copy to the disk 'Jeff Linder' failed. An unknown error occurred (-69)." Anybody know what this is about? Thanks, Jeff

This is a cautionary tale. Wherever you keep your music files, on whatever drive you use, be it your computer's internal hard drive or an external drive, BACK IT UP. If you have an iPod you often have between 5 and 60gigs of music, video, pictures, books, Podcasts, etc. stored. That's a ton of stuff you accumulate during the life of your iPod or the life of more than one iPod. If the drive dies (and, believe me, drives, like everything else, die) all of that stored information you have worked long and hard to acquire will be gone. Gone. Gone. Mine is. It will take me a very long time to build my files again and they will never be quite what I have collected and bought. So, BACK IT UP, BACK IT UP, BACK IT UP. Thanks for your response. -Jeff

Hello All,
iBooks won't load PDF files any more.
I have a lot of PDF files so I thought I reached a maximum number of files or space so I deleted a lot of old files but this did not help.
I rebooted, synced, updated, restarted, etc. - everything that I can think of and I still have the same problem.
I don't remembered the last file that I loaded into iBooks, as I usually put them into collections.
I can still load PDF files into other applications like PDF Reader, but I prefer to have them all in iBooks.
Anybody seen this one before?
I have 64GB iPad2 and I have over 14GB free space.

There have been several threads on this topic over the last few weeks. It's not clear what the issue is, and it is not universal, but tend to effect users storing large numbers of PDFs in iBooks. Possible it has some thing to dowith capacity of the app, or specific characteristics of some of the PDFs.

Wondering if anyone has seen this before -
Just a second ago I opened up a Logic session to start a mix. The tracks were recorded in PT HD, consolidated, and imported into Logic 8. I started playing the mix back and hit Command = to open up the mixer (i use PT commands in Logic) and everything all of the sudden slowed down and sounded like someone had dropped a bunch of springs on the floor or something.
An error message came up saying "Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI. Sample rate of 22437 recognized." I shut off Logic, did not save, restarted my computer, opened the session again, and right when I hit my key command to open the mixer, that sound occurred and I got the same error message. However, if I click the Mixer tab, the sound doesn't occur and I don't get the error message, only when I use my key command.
The tracks were recorded at 88.2/24 and imported into the session at 88.2/24, and yes, the sample rate of the session matches the sample rate of the tracks. And yes, all of my gear is clocked to 88.2 at the moment.
Anyone have any ideas? Anyone seen this before?

Strange, have you checked for doubled key commands?
Logic defaults to "set locators by region/events" perhaps the key commands file has been corrupted.

Illustrator error message - anyone seen this one before?

Hi there,
I was merrily working on my logo yesterday in CS4, saved it as an .ai file, closed it down and now today when I go to open it I get this:
"acrobat pdf file format is having difficulties. Object label badly formatted."
Has anyone seen this before and have a way of fixing it? I went to my backups and they are all the same, not sure what else to do!!

...finally getting around to installing Leopard. Actually pre-bought it before it was released.
Spent yesterday backing up my current OS onto an external hard drive (bootable) and it took awhile but finally finished and tested the back-up. SUCCESS!!!
OK.....ready to install Leopard. Turned off all running apps, inserted the Leopard install DVD, it comes onto the desktop, double click the install icon and then clicked restart.
Computer restarts and what do I get?

I suspect this may be the cause of your problem: the Leopard install DVD must contain a version of OS X capable of booting the target Mac, & the "first edition" disks that were released prior to the release of a few of the newer Macs won't do that because they lack certain hardware drivers those Macs require. IIRC, Leopard's original, slightly delayed release date was early in October of 2007. Your profile indicates you have a 20" 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, possibly the iMac (Mid 2007) model which was released slightly before that (sometime in August).
Theoretically, that means the DVD was released after your Mac & this should not be an issue, but because of the delayed release of Leopard & the close proximity of the release date of this iMac, it is possible your DVD does not support it. If so, you will need to contact Apple about replacing your retail Leopard disk with the current one, or at least a newer version than the first one released. (I believe that was P/N MB021Z/A, containing OS version 10.5. Any disk containing 10.5.1 or later should work for your iMac.)

Never seen this one before - Bouncing Video

I just brought in some footage and the entire video is bouncing as if the camera was on a spring. When I open the footage in Quicktime or other players, there is no bounce. The camera was on a secure stand in a studio and other files shot around the same time are fine. Could the update this morning have anything to do with this?

I'm uncertain on some of the details of your issue here, but I'm not familiar with this kind of problem. What is the source of your footage? You state that you "brought in some video footage that was already in the library that comes earlier in movie." But what kind of camera or export source did you use to create the media? This would help to diagnose the issue.
In addition, you note your sequence settings:

This is an odd size for 25fps, as 720x480 is usually associated with NTSC .9 pixel aspect ratio. Nonetheless, you shouldn't be seeing bouncing in the timeline. As I noted in my response below to Ann, playback of H.264-based material can result in some artifacting if the Playback Resolution is set to less than the Full setting. Is your source material using the H.264 codec? It won't play back in QT player if it is from an AVCHD device. If it is a DSLR, perhaps it is from a device we have not tested ourselves.
As to why the issue doesn't occur once the file is rendered: per your stated sequence settings, we render previews in an I-Frame Only MPEG codec, which makes for smoother playback than H.264 (hence my guess above).
Any details would be helpful in trying to provide an answer, but take a look at the Playback settings, and see if Full Resolution does not resolve the issue for you.

Colons are used by the operating system so can't be used in file names.

Hi everyone,
I have never seen this happen before, were I edit a segment of video about 2 minutes long, I render it out and afterwards the clips in my edit change completely to something different. It takes footage from the same tape and replaces my clips with random clips.
Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix it.
I have just erased and installed a fresh copy of OSX and all my programs have been newly installed, hoping it would resolve this issue.
I could really use someones opnion.

Only thing I though of was deleting the clips, renaming the timeline, moving the entire project onto a new harddrive and erasing all the render files.
If this does not work I am going to toss my MAC out the window!

You should be able to change your e-mail address from your provider ... then edit it to meet the Apple requirements. Unfortunately you've given us no profile details so we can't tell what device you have.

Wish I'd Seen This Site Before Buying

Wish I had seen this site before buying my laptop. Purchased it on Jan. 4 and sent it in for repairs on Feb. 2. Had had 3 different problems--2 with CD drive and the third and final was when the display backlight blew. HP has now extended the delivery date for the 3rd time and when you talk to the 1-800 service number, you get an "I don't know" attitude and we'll see what we can do. HP has had my laptop longer than I have and I think they should just send me a NEW (not reconditioned) laptop. They don't seem to have any parts on hand to fix my computer---probably are getting their paperwork together to file Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. You can bet I won't EVER buy another HP product. Thanks for letting me vent my anger!!!!

Got the card working 5 minutes ago and logged onto the server to play BF242. After less than 5 minutes the thing raped my ears again with another high pitched squeal. As I'm typing this I have proper tinitus.
I have removed the card and I'm getting a refund tomorrow. I'm also downloading the realtek drivers and going back to onboard sound. Might not be particularly good, but it works and doesn't make my ears bleed when it decides not to.

Okay so a couple problems...
(I have an ipod video and I don't know if that's a 5th generation or not, just please help. I'll do anything.)
1. My ipod video was stolen, so I got a new one and registered it on a computer at school. Now that I'm home, my computer's itunes won't recognize this ipod, being used to my old one. So naturally I can't load any of the things I've bought on itunes to my ipod. I have tried that thing where you press Menu and Select. When I go to Prefrences it says No ipod Connected. So what can I do? I guess there is no way to unregister it, is there?
2. I have been reading, trying to figure out how I'm going to get movies onto my ipod. There are all these programs--Limewire, BitComet, Videora, Spark something or other--that I have downloaded, trying hopelessly to convert a movie to the right file and get it on itunes. I follow the directions, but I can't understand any of the programs and I even just tried paying some website for a .mov file of the movie and trying to open it in itunes. nothing works for me.
3. I'm not sure if I'm doing things right to begin with...in order to get something into itunes, is the only way to do it to press add file to library (Ctrl+O)? I have also tried import but that only works when I insert a Cd.
Something I just tried:
I pressed export and saved the entire library to the drive containing my ipod (yes it is recognized in my computer) so it should be saved there (?) but how to make it recognize and play it?
I am such a novice...if anyone will be my lovely computer geek, I will be so greatful and send you presents I'm not even joking.

1) If the iTunes preference window is open when you connect your iPod, the iPod will not be recognized by iTunes.
Also, iPods can work with many iTunes libraries, so that is not the problem here.
Is all the software on your computer up to date?

Does the iPod show up in My Computer when connected to your computer? Does it say Do Not Disconnect?

2) What part aren't you understanding. Here are a couple of free programs you can use to convert videos...
MPEG Streamclip
Videora iPod Converter
The programs should come with documentation and instructions to convert videos.
3) You can go to file-->add file to library, file-->add folder to library, or have iTunes open and drag the files into the iTunes library while viewing the library.. You can also import from CDs.
iTunes needs to be adding the songs to the iPod. You cannot just add the song files to the iPod.
