You are an iPod expert if you can solve this one

Here's what's happening:
~I plugged my iPod into the wall, and it worked perfectly fine...UNTIL I hit the play button. Then it starts to make a clicking noise approximately every five seconds
~I wiped out all of the songs by manually restoring it, but when I went to plug it back into the wall again, all of the songs magically reappeared (I'm stumped as to how that happened)
~The battery icon says it's charging but will show that it's entirely dead.
~Both the software folder symbol AND the sad iPod icon have appeared but switch off and on.
~My computer recognizes that it's plugged in as a 'Removable Disk' but iTunes doesn't recognize it.
What i've done:
~Reset it more times than I can remember
~Restarted my computer a LOT
~Reinstalled iTunes with all of the software updates.
~Plugged and unplugged it from the wall charger to give it back the little life it appears to have left.
My warranty is long expired so this is my last attempt to fix it. I'd rather not have to go and spend another 250 bucks on another 20 or 30 gb so any help is appreciated. Thanks for reading!

There is a pretty comprehensive post written by another forum member which is about the sad iPod icon or the folder and ! icon.

  • If You Can Solve This One, Then You Seriously Win

Here's the deal. I have a 3G 15gig iPod that I refuse to let die. It has a new battery that I recently installed.
It will not charge through firewire to the wall or to my macbook pro, nor will it charge through usb (which goes without saying on 3G's). There are 2 ways to give it power, my roommates Bose iPod soundsystem, and my G4 tower at home through firewire. No other way to give it power. (Read: firewire seems messed up.)
Something is corrupted and I've tried every possible way to erase the disk and corrupted files to allow me to Restore the system firmware. The iPod is hasn't worked in some time. A PC will recognize it (but not in iTunes) so I've formatted it on a PC to FAT32 through Windows XP. Then plugged into my macbook, no dice. I thought erasing the corrupted files on the PC would do something, but it didn't.
On a mac, it will recognize the iPod through USB, not through Firewire. Incidentally, I can run Disk Utility and format the pants off the thing, but to no avail. I've erased and formatted, in Mac Os Extended, and in Extended (Journaled), I've even done the "Zero Out Data" erase, which turns the entire disk into zeros--but that doesn't work either. No matter what I do, the iPod will show me the Folder icon after starting up.
When the iPod is recognized through USB, it will be formatted through Disk Utility, but not through iTunes, which claims that "iPod must be connected through firewire to restore." The hitch of course, is that the iPod refuses to be recognized on firewire.
Recently, after doing the Zero-Out-Data erase, iTunes didn't refuse to Restore because of USB, but instead gave me the 1418 error as I tried to Restore through USB.
So my question, how can I fix this sucker without buying a new harddrive?
How can I restore an iPod through USB, or how can I get my macbook pro to recognize my ipod through firewire?
Much, much obliged if you have any input.
    --David.

I'm thinking of purchasing a new hard drive, as I think that is the problem. Would this likely allow me to charge my ipod again via firewire and restore it, etc.? Or does the fact that I can't connect via firewire mean there is something deeply wrong? (ie a new logic board would be in order)

  • See if you can figure this one out...

First off, I use FireFox, not Safari (Safari is great, but FF works better for me)...
So here's the deal: I use MySpace as means of making some important contacts. I have a Power Mac G5 connected to a Linksys router (Model# RT41-BU) which is behind a Motorola SB-5100 cable modem. I also have three Windows XP machines on the same network.
I have no problem with any other website except MySpace. As soon as I log in, I can usually get to 2-3 pages fine. As soon as I click to access probably the 4th page, I start timing out. My computer will stall for up to 1-2 minutes. Eventually the page will either load (usually just partially at this point) or I will get a time-out error (btw, by "stalling" I mean I just sit there and wait, and wait, and wait for a page to load...NOT that the actual computer has frozen and is not responding).
If, after getting the time-out error, I then click “Try Again” the page will usually then IMMEDIATELY load w/ no problem (occasionally I will get the timeout page again after a few minutes).
If I choose to QUIT Firefox during the stalling, but BEFORE I get the time out error, and immediately open it back up, I start stalling again (at this point it’s merely trying to load my homepage, which, of course is apple.com/startpage).
If I try to go to the EXACT same pages on my Windows XP machine using Firefox I have absolutely NO problem loading any pages whatsoever…UNLESS:
If I, again QUIT Firefox on my Mac BEFORE getting the timeout error…walk 5 feet over to my Windows machine and try to load my home page (Yahoo.com), it will stall. I usually have to then wait about 1-2 minutes, and it will start back up again, and I then have no problems.
Here’s where it gets REALLY interesting:
If I DISCONNECT my Linksys router, and plug my Mac DIRECTLY into the back of my cable modem (in other words, disassemble the network, and have the modem shooting stright to the mac), I DON’T have this problem. I can log into MySpace hit any page, just as I can with my Windows machine.
Because the problem DOES NOT occur to my Windows machine while it’s ON the network, and DOES NOT occur with my Mac when it’s OFF the network, all signs point to some sort of issue with certain Macs running on certain Linksys routers. There must be some sort of conflict between the two, but I IMAGINE that there HAS to be either some sort of tweak or some sort of patch that will fix this issue.
I have had this issue from day one of owning this computer (about 4 months). It has never worked on the router properly.
I have tried reformatting the machine and reinstalling everything. No change.
I have tried lowering the MTU on both my router configuration and mac network config anywhere from 1400 to 750, with no noticable change.
I have tried several different browsers (Firefox, Safari, IE for Mac & even Opera) but still have the same results.
I’ve gone into the “about:config” page of Firfox and turned on network.http.proxy.pipelining and set the max requests to 16, with no new results.
    I have tried disabling javascripting…nothing.
I have also tried contacting Linksys, and the only thing they can suggest is lowring my MTU again (It’s obvious by talking to them that English is also not their first language)
    Here’s something weird as well:
WHILE the page is stalling to load, I can open the Network Utility and run a continuous ping to the page I’m trying to hit and get a consistent response on EACH ping, even though the page won’t load.
My cable modem and router BOTH operate on DHCP (IP address and DNS servers are assigned automatically – NOTHING that I know of is entered in statically).
The only thing I haven’t tried is upgrading the firmware on my router. I’d really like to use this as a LAST resort – HP ruined a DVD writer I had once with a firmware upgrade that went wrong.
I’d really like to get this fixed. I have friends in a band that are out on the road right now, and with the exception of wasting valuable minutes on my cell phone, this is the only way I have of keeping contact with them. It’s really irritating that I have to use my Windows machine…despite the fact that it’s only a few feet away, I SHOULDN”T HAVE to.
Anyone want to try and tackle this one?
    Much appreciated,
    --Jbj

    Smells like DHCP spaghetification...

No good, unless you tried anything funny when installing MacOS X, networking issues have are not magically fixed by re-installing the OS. This is a habit coming from the Windows world...
My cable modem and router BOTH operate on DHCP (IP address and DNS servers are assigned automatically – NOTHING that I know of is entered in statically)
What about your Mac (and the rest of your PCs)? How do they get their TCP/IP settings (manually or via DHCP)?
Your issue(s) smell DHCP big time, go to System Preferences-->Network-->Ethernet/AirPort (whatever you use to connect) and click on the TCP/IP tab. Set Configure IPv4 to Manually and post back.
How are your computers connected to the Linksys box (wired/wirelessly)?
Macs running 9.x, Macs running 10.4.x and SGI workstations running Irix 6.5.x

  • If you can solve this you're a GENIUS!!!

Okay so Im burning a warmup cd for my team and I have cut all the songs according to the parts of the song I want.( I learned this from a previous post I had). However when I burn the cd it takes the song that is in the 7th postition and adds silent time to it. It doesnt matter what song it is. For example the one now, I cut it for 2 minutes and the original song is 4:38. Before I burn the cd the song says 2 minutes and then after I burn the cd it says 4:38 and when it plays off the cd it plays for two minutes and then goes silent for 2:38. Ive tried everything please help!!!

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importing and set the encoder to WAV (automatic settings). Then select the files in question from your iTunes library or playlist and use the Advanced > Convert Selection to WAV menu to convert the files to WAV format. Make sure "Kind" is enabled in your view options (Edit > View Options) so you can easily identify which songs are the WAVs and which are the original MP3s.
You can now select the WAVs and use the File > New Playlist from Selection menu to create a playlist to burn to CD. First, make sure to go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Burning and set the disc format to audio CD.
When you're done with all of this, remember to go back and change your importing preferences to whatever you like to use, as WAV probably isn't what you want for general use.

  • If you can figure this one out your a Saint

O.K. I installed the os 10.4 and am currently upgraded to 10.4.4. I started working on a video project in final cut. imported into idvd, burned it. Idvd quits unexpectedly. My dual g4 1mhz 1 gig ram Quick silver mac wont read dvd just burned but my 17" powerbook and any other dvd player I put it in plays fine. ..............Burns it but wont play it....just doesn't make any sense to me. My computer is 3 years old

when you burn it, do you click burn in iDVD, or do you save it as a disk image, and then burn that?
if you save it as a disk image, see if the powermac can read the disk image.
if you do burn it in iDVD, save it as a disk image, mount the disk image, and drag the video_TS folder onto DVD player, or go into dvd player and say "File > open VIDEO_TS folder" navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder and say open, you can test your DVD that way.
to burn the disk image, go into Disk Utility (Apps > Utilities > Disk Utility) press burn, navigate to the disk image, click Burn, set your settings (speed, ect) and it will burn and than varify the data, you can cancel it at this stage if you wish.

  • Bet you cant solve this ONE!!! Connecting my Samsung HDTV to my Macbook

I have looked for hours upon hours of all the forums. So here goes...
I have a Black Macbook running Snow Leaopard with a mini DVI to VGA adapter.
I have the VGA running to the back of my Samsung LCD 37" HDTV.
But when i press the source button on the tv, it says "no input device are connected".
I have tried multiple things such as picking a couple random displays (800x600 etc.)
I have also tried mirroring displays.
The crazy thing is that when i cascade my desktop or show my spaces, it shows the external monitor next to my main screen.
I read somewhere that if you get the refresh rate below 60hz that it would work, but thats not an option.
My mouse even acts like it goes to the next screen when i drag it all the way to the right.
I have called Samsung to no avail, even AppleCare couldnt really help.
If you solve this, you should put your application into AppleCare Support.
This is urgent that i get this fixed by Sunday Morning, Thanks for your help!!!

Is it an Apple brand mini DVI to VGA adapter? I've heard of incompatibilities with off brands. Have you tested the VGA to VGA cable to make sure it works? The reason I'm offering these suggestions is your MacBook knows something is plugged in but your TV isn't getting it. You might also check your tv's manual for a clue.

  • If you can solve this problem, then you are a true iPod Classic Genius !

So I have talked to every level at Apple's iPod support, and to list all the things they made me do would exceed the size limit of this message board. They even made me send back my original iPod Classic, and I had to wait for almost 1 month to receive my replacement. Here is a summary of my problem, that they (Apple support) have not been able to solve :
    - I have a very extensive iTunes collection - over 77,000 songs. All of them were ripped, using iTunes.
    - I use the ID tags extensively - i.e. every field is used, and the comments are filled to the maximum allowed characters.
    - I am not able, to synch more than ~ 23,300 songs to any of my two 160 Gb iPod classics - therefore, including my exchanged iPod, this issue shows up on three different iPods.
When synching more than 23,300 songs, my iPods are no longer able to play any songs. In the 'About' menu, the iPod shows the wrong number of songs (i.e. 17,300 instead of 24,000) and a huge amount of 'disk space used' is flagged as 'other' (in orange). When clicking on 'Album' or 'Songs', the iPod shows the message 'No songs found'.
When synching less than 23,300, I am able to resolve this issue by restarting the iPods after synching. However, even when synching less than 23,300 titles, the iPods show the wrong number of songs, right after synching, and the huge amount of 'disk space used' for 'other'. Therefore, I have to restart my iPods every time I synch them.
The same problem occurs when using my old Power Book G4 (OS X 10.4.10), and on my new 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.1).
I am using an external HD to hold my music files, which is directly connected to my USB2 port on either Laptop.
I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes and all the firmware and software is up-to-date.
I have rebuilt my iTunes Library from scratch several times.
I have no problem, playing any of the 77,000+ songs in iTunes.
My assumption is, that there is a size limit for the iTunes library index file on the iPod. Can somebody confirm this theory ?
It seems funny, that the same problem shows up on three different iPods using two different Mac computers.
Does anybody have the same problem ?
Is this an issue that Apple is ignoring ?
Does anybody know, how this can be resolved ?
Thank you very much for your help.!

    Hi There,
I have the exact same problem as you. I'm on my third ipod 160gb. All three have had the freezing and resetting problem. Like you my problems only start once I try to sync more than about 20,000 songs, which is around 90gb.
I have a 140gb music library. If I sync 70gb of my library it works fine. If I wipe that and sync the other 70gb it works fine so I know my mp3 files are okay. If I try to upload the whole library it freezes when I try to select any music.
If I'd only wanted to sync half my music library I'd have bought an 80gb ipod.
I thought firmware 1.1 and itunes 7.6 would solve my problem. No. Exact same problem. I contacted apple support. A genuinely helpful guy advised me to rebuild my music library and change my ipod drive letter. With baited breath I did all this, then restored my ipod to start from a clean slate. I synced my library in 10gb chunks... and it froze up around 90gb just like it always does.
What upsets me is the hours I've spent glued to my PC re-syncing music, searching through forums for answers. I'm absolutley pig sick of it. I never had a minutes trouble with any of my other ipods.
Please, please, please apple investigate this problem, it only happens when these ipods are over half full. Please let us have a firmware update that addresses the bugs us folks are complaining about instead of adding new features we'd be grateful for if only our ipods worked in the first place.

  • Big Problem in Logic, If you can solve this problem ur truly a Mac Genius

Hello folks, as the title suggests, I have an enourmous problem. I am an 18 year old aspiring producer/engineer who cashed out his entire savings to buy a sick mobile recording setup to take to Germany for a year as a foriegn exchange student. The bare bones of my setup are as follows:
1.83 gHz Macbook pro with 1.5 gb Ram
    Logic Pro 7 universal
    Presonus Firepod
Glyph 80 gb 7200 rpm drive
Here is the problem. When I try to record a track in Logic Pro, the bar ruler lights up red like it is supposed to, as does the record and play buttons in the transport window, but no window comes up saying recording to blah blah blah HD, and then instead of recording the Song Position line just moves forward like normal but leaves behind no audio region.
Here is where it gets tricky. Logic will record with the built in Microphone, but not the Firepod. Garageband works absolutely perfect with the Firepod and as far as I can tell the Firepod works perfectly. I have tried all of the obvious solutions so far such as repairing permissions, deleting preferences, blah blah blah, the support staff at sweetwater (who I bought the system from) can't say why it isn't working because everything is compatible, apple couldn't fix it and then said it was because I didn't have a 7200 rpm drive, then I bought one and it still didn't work. What the **** am I supposed to do!
As far as I can tell there is some sort of OSX incompatibility with this system that should have been fixed long ago. By the same token there are other people sucessfully using the exact same setup as I. Please god, or anyone else out there with a solution, what should I do to get this system working! I am so anxious about this!

Ok, In my hardware/audio drivers pane, logic recognizes the firepod by name. I have it selected there although this device does in fact use core audio drivers to run not 3rd party ones... In addition it doesn't matter one bit what input I have selected because it doesn't even leave behind a blank audio region. It leaves absolutely nothing behind. I have also tried refreshing my record paths many times. I have no clue then why my buttons and bar ruler light up, does this indicate anything to you guys as to the nature of the problem? Applecare is pretty stumped. I recently did a complete reinstall of everything, including OSX, then did all the software updates and that still didn't work. As for the aggregate workaround, I have not yet tried that. This is such a wierd deal because sometimes it will record one track just fine, and then I will try it seconds later with the exact same setup, and it won't work. So basically it has recorded quite a number of times with my setup, it just refuses to do it the majority of the time. ***!

  • [Desperate] Our company will pay if you can solve this memory problem!

We have a java program running in linux. The problem with this program is that it's memory usage keep increasing in size and does not stop. Eventually all the swap space will be used and the system dies. However, here is the key, the heap usage DOES NOT INCREASE. We cannot figure this out. What could the problem here?
Heap Usage shown by profile: cycles between 450-500Mb. VM was set to havea 600Mb limit
Total memory usage 6Gb shown by the unix utility top and growing.

  • You're miraculous if you can solve this

It involves the mini and the inMotion speakers I connected to. Because my AC to DC adapter broke that connected the inMotion to my iPod mini, I went out and got a replacement AC power adapter... well... I read directions, and set the adapter to 9V output and connected it to the speakers. the mini lit up... (I saw the glorious apple) and then it cut off... then it lit up and showed the "low battery" picture, and then it cut off. This happened at about 5 second intervals before i cut the whole thing off.
...Then i tried to hook my mini into a normal power outlet w/ itsown connectors, and it did the same on/off thing! So... it won't light up, it'll just show me an apple or a low battery, etc. What do i do? is it something w/ the adapter? could that have possibly affected the mini on the inside? was it too much voltage? plz help! -MC

A simple reset might solve it all. Look for the instructions in your Owner's manual, but as I recall, pressing on play+menu is the right combo, hold for a few seconds and voila. CAUTION: it will also erase everything you have on your mini!

Others have run into similar things. See if one of these links offers any help and if not try to google for FacesServlet.java:209:

My guess is that something may have gotten corrupted (second link) unless someone changed something from the time it was working to the time it stopped working.

  • OK - See if you can work this one out - Isync problem

I just had to have a new hard drive installed in my powerbook. All seemed well until I tried to Sync my laptop with .Mac. In short, whilst I can log into .Mac on the net and access my email and address book easily enough via the web, I cannot log into my .mac account via System Preferences in order to initiate sync'ing. I note under 'Advanced' that there is no computer registered but pressing' Register This Computer' has no effect. The warning messages coming up simply state I cannot access the .mac synchronisation server. I have checked, rechecked and triple checked my .mac password - it clearly works given I can log in via .mac on the web!! Thus I am baffled.....
    Ideas?!!

    12" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Nearly same here - in the menubar it says (in german, i'll translate) "no status, sync deactivated".
In the .mac system prefs theres no computer registered and I always get the error message "sync not available, blabla, unkown error, check account settings and network settings"
Well, both are right, im 100% sure.
I already trashed the dotmac prefs, changed and rechaged my settings - nothing changed.
All right after I reinstalled my system and imported my data (with this assistent) from my backup on a firewire-hd...

Ok so i got this laptop in a few days ago here are the problems and the things i have tried. This laptop when it came to me did not have a hard drive, so obviously no OS. Upon installing a hard drive then trying to load Yosemite from a USB stick, I turn mac on, sleep light will blink 5 times then boot, Will come to normal gray screen then apple logo, will then load the OS install, but go straight to a blue screen with vertical lines. Tried different hard drive, tried different RAM sizes and speeds, tried different OS, tried CD instead. Have done numerous PRAM and SMC resets. trying Safe mode gets me a panic cpu 4 caller error then restarts. I have tried using a hard drive that had an OS already installed and will go straight to blue screen after loading. I have tried fsck -fy in single user mode. I do get that disk2s3 is write protected in single user mode, but im pretty sure that its the OS disk. I do not see a second hard drive in single user mode but i believe that because its not partitioned yet. Any ideas community?

Tried doing OS X lion by CD now, and will only get half way through load bar before the apple logo and loading bar disappears and then it will sit at a gray screen.

  • So you think you are an Java uber-geek? Then figure this one out. . .

Ok, uber-Java geeks, let's see if you can figure this one out. It' s butt-ugly and got me totally stumped.
This is in a Tomcat 5.5 environment.
I have a jsp (hierarchy.jsp) which has static nested class called MgmtAuthBean. This hierarchy.jsp creates a TreeMap object which contains instances of the static nested class, MgmtAuthBean. So, after compilation of the hierarchy.jsp, I end having 2 jsp's:
    hierarchy_jsp.java <==== original jsp
hierarchy_jsp$MgmtAuthBean.java <==== nested static class jsp
Ok, easy to understand so far. . .now for the rub. . .
The hierarchy_jsp.java then saves the TreeMap object in a session.
Another servlet (ExcelServlet) then accesses this saved session object, but in the process of reconstituting the TreeMap object, it requires access to the nested static class hierarchy_jsp$MgmtAuthBean.java.
The problem is that ExcelServlet craters because it can't find hierarchy_jsp$MgmtAuthBean.java in order to reconstitute the TreeMap object.
Since jsp's are dynamically created when called, how do I point either the Tomcat container or ExcelServlet to hierarchy_jsp$MgmtAuthBean.java?
For reason's too stupid to explain, I can't get rid of the static nested class, so I have to figure out how to make this work. . .
    :)

Tomcat provides a utility for pre-compiling JSP into Servlet class files. This can also be done in ANT. You can precompile the JSP which will create the inner class file and then compile the Java files that need the inner class file. It may take some tweaking to get all of the classes to compile in the correct order.
A possible alternative is t have the inner class implement an interface. the hierarchy_jsp can then refer to the contents of the TreeMap as instances of the interface instead of as instances of the inner class.
