You are unable to log in...; Network Home directories; 10.4 & 10.5 Servers

I have a solution!
Note: this is a new post because all previous posts dealing with this topic have been archived, MANY without an answer.
Problem:
Users with Network Home directories can't log in. After entering their correct username and password, the following error message appears:
"You are unable to login to the user account 'username' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
Problem occurs with v10.5 Leopard client attempting to login to a Network Home directory hosted on a v10.4 Tiger server.
_Significant Troubleshooting Symptom:_
Client mac Console log (all Messages) contains the following entry at the time the user attempted to login to their Network Home directory:
authorizationhost[509] ERROR | -[HomeDirMounter
mountNetworkHomeWithURL:attributes:dir:Path:username:] |
PremountHomeDirectoryWith Authentication( url=afp://server.example.com/Homes, homedir=
/Network/Servers/server.example.com/Volumes/ServerHardDisk/Homes/username,
name=username )
returned 2
_Computing/Network Environment:_
v10.5 Leopard server doing: DNS; Open Directory with Kerberos for Single Sign-On; AFP for half of all users' Network Home directories.
v10.4 Tiger server doing: AFP for the other half of the Network Home directories. Also, note that Open Directory is not running on this server, BUT IT IS CONFIGURED (using Server Admin) as "Connected to a Directory System" and has joined the Kerberos realm on the v10.5 Leopard server.
v10.5 Leopard clients.
Solution:
v10.5 User Management manual
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/User_Managementv10.5.pdf
says share points for Network Home directories have to have Guest Access ENABLED. See step 5 on page 117 and step 12 on page 118. Note that these are two different settings, but seem consistent with each other.
I had followed/complied/set Guest Access according to steps 5 (page 117) and 12 (page 118) on BOTH the v10.5 Leopard AND the v10.4 Tiger servers. The solution that allows users to log on normally is:
Uncheck/disable Guest Access (as set in step 12 page 118) for the v10.4 Leopard server only. Leave "Share this item using AFP" checked. Uncheck "Allow AFP guest access."
The above worked for me. Your milage may vary. If anyone knows how to report this to Apple for fixing in the server software and/or clarification in User Management manual, please do. If anyone knows that this solution "breaks" other stuff, please post back.

  • You are unable to log in to the user account at this time

I am facing this problem for some time now. Can anyone give some hints?
By the way. Excuse me for my English. I am not a native speaker.
I have a MacMini with Snow Leopard Server (10.6.7 since yesterday) wired to two iMacs (10.6.7), two PC's running Windows and a Time Capsule/Airport (7.5.2) which is wirelessly connected to a MacBook Air (10.6.7), iPad and iPhone.
The PC's use file sharing (SMB) which works fine.
The Server has some network accounts. Home dir is on the server.
At one iMac, I can log in to a network account. E-mail, iCal on Server, sync with iPad and iPhone. Works fine.
At the second iMac, I can NOT log in to any network account. Window shakes, saying "You are unable to log in to the user account at this time" and "Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred". In Terminal window, I can reach /Network/Servers/do.main.name/Users. Using the Finder, I can access all my files. If I shut down the first iMac, I can log in.
At my MacBook, I can not log in to my network account. In Terminal window, I can Not reach /Network/Servers/do.main.name/Users. I get "Users: Host is down". But using Finder, I have access to all my files. Shutting down both iMacs doesn't help. Airport settings see to be correct.
Where do I have to look. On the Server side? Using Server Admin and Workgroup Manager (from any client) I can not see anything strange. In WGM, multiple login for the network accounts is enabled. I even have Guest Access enabled for AFP (both in the sharepoint and in AFP settings).
    Anyone?

  • You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount "...

I know there are various posts already out there on remedies for recovering your data stored on a FileVault account when you receive the following message at the login screen; *"You are unable to log in to the File Vault user account "myaccount " at this time"*, but this genuinely worked for me despite AppleCare providing absolutely no assistance whatsoever. In fact, if I had followed their advise I'd be inconsolable right now having wiped my MacBook Pro and contemplating the prospect of rewriting my two essays due in 3 days time!
I, in a moment of shear stupidity, decided to move the sparsebundle file in my one and only account to trash. Thinking nothing of my foolish actions I shut down for the evening without a care in the world. The next day I started up my computer as usual, and as usual I was prompted at the login screen for my password. I entered the correct password, but was alarmed to see the message above flash before my eyes. Without boring you all with what I did over the weekend waiting for AppleCare to open again on Monday morning. Anyway, this post is specifically for people who have put the sparsebundle of their FileVault-enabled account in the trash (NOT anything else!) without emptying it, of course! The other prerequisite is that you must REMEMBER YOUR FILEVAULT ACCOUNT PASSWORD!
    1. Firstly, you must insert *Disc 1 of the Mac OS X Install* discs.
    2. Restart your computer holding down the letter S (make sure you are holding this down BEFORE the start up noise sounds)
    3. Select the appropriate language and continue to the next screen (DO NOT go past the next screen, the WELCOME screen)
    4. At the grey bar at the top, under Utilities, select *Reset Password*
    5. Select the Administrator/Root account and proceed to change the password of this account to test
    6. Confirm the password by reentering it and click Save
    7. Restart your computer and at the login screen you should now be able to select an account named Other
    8. The username for this account is root and the password is test (the password you entered earlier)
    9. Using Finder, locate the Terminal utility, which can be found in *Applications --> Utilities*
    10. Enter the following, ignoring the bold of course (pay attention to lower cases AND spaces!): *defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE*
    11. Hit Enter
    12. On the next line, enter: *killall Finder*
    13. Hit Enter again
    14. Type: exit on the next line and close Terminal
    15. This has enabled the hidden files on your computer to be visible
    16. You then need to locate the sparsebundle file in the trash of your usual account folder (it could be 501, so search for that too) whilst logged in to the administrator account
    17. Once you have found it, click *Go to Folder* under Go in the grey bar and type /Users/
    18. Create a *new folder* at this location with a new username
    19. Move the sparsebundle from its present location to the folder you have just created
    20. Click Get Info on the new folder, and at the very bottom click *Apply to enclosed items*
    21. In *System Preferences --> Accounts*, create a new user with EXACTLY the same name as the folder you created (eg. Folder name = burtreynolds, new user = burtreynolds)
    22. A window should appear if you have done the above correctly stating *A folder in Users folder already has same name, would you like to use it?*
    22. Click OK
    23. Click *Show All* at the top of the Accounts window
    24. Restart your system and log in to the new account you have created
    25. The sparsebundle should now be visible
    26. Double-click on the sparsebundle, it will prompt you to enter a password
    27. Enter the password of your former account (if you have genuinely forgotten this password, I honestly can't help any further at this point)
    28. If the password is correct, the sparsebundle will automatically mount and you will have access to all the files
    29. NEVER EVER USE FILEVAULT AGAIN AND BACK UP ALL DATA YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE!!!
The above worked for me, and to say I'm mildly annoyed with AppleCare is, well, putting it mildly really!

  • You are unable to log in.

Hello everyone. This is my first post and alas it has to be about firevault error.
I recently bought my new macbook pro and i used the migration assistant to transfer all my data from my old macbook which runs on leopard.
Everything seems fine until I try to log in. I use the correct passwords and I get the "You are unable to log in to the FireVault useraccount <USERNAME> at this time. I even use my master password to "reset" my login and when i choose new password and verify it, give a new hint and then I try to log in, i get a shaky screen. No explanation given.
I went to the disk ulity (booting via dvd) to repaid disk, did that nothing out of order...
    Thank you everyone in advance

  • Message comes up on startup: You are unable to log in to the user account "terry" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.  This is a late 2012 mac mini with a 64g SSD and 1 Gig hard drive installed.  Help please!

As in title.  I have tried resetting the password. Nothing works to get me past this problem.  The computer was working fine before this happened.

I have just purchased this mini and it was wiped to a virtual new unit.  I have done an install of the OS up to 10.9.5 and then installed my purchased software that is stored on iTunes through wifi.  The computer was working fine although sometimes a bit slow.  I have it set up with the SSD as the program drive and the 1T drive for data which I have no files on it yet.  I am the only account on the computer so cannot log in on another account.  I booted up holding the Alt key and then used the restore drive which brought up the Utilities window.  I then opened Terminal and typed in "resetpassword" and then closed out and restarted the computer.  It seems to recognize my new password but still gives me the same message as above.
I do have an Apple OS system 10.7 on USB if that needs to be used to reinstall the OS to fix the problem. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.

  • Network Home Directories

I'm setting up a new xserve at a school i work at, came with 10.5. All setup ok as OD Master etc, but i'm having an issue with the home drive location. It all works fine when i share a folder for home drives off the Server HD where the system sits, but as there are 3 drives in the thing i'd like them on one of the other drives. On the client i get "You are unable to log in to the user account "XXXX" at this time", "..The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server..."
My DNS seems ok, hostname etc all resolves correct. I can mount the share manually, and then use the users credentials to mount it.
I thought it was a 10.5 issue, so i did an install of 10.4 and have the same issue, it's driving me nuts.
Any ideas would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    Hi
"..The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server..."
Generally this message indicates an underlying network issues, usually a misconfigured DNS Service or possibly network service.
    My DNS seems ok
DNS is not a touchy feely thing. It has to be configured correctly and qualifying on the forward and reverse. Otherwise you will have problems. However sometimes these issues are just down to a poor promotion from Standalone to Open Directory Master. Demotion back to Standalone (once you have archived the LDAP database) and re-promotion back to OD Master usually sorts this out.
First things first is to try and get you on track with DNS. Wherever possible avoid using .local. Although not impossible to configure DNS using .local its better if you don’t. Use the host and dig commands at the command line. I’ll use www.apple.com as an example:
Last login: Thu Dec 6 01:54:35 on console
    accountss-macbook:~ accounts$ host www.apple.com
www.apple.com is an alias for www.apple.com.akadns.net.
    www.apple.com.akadns.net has address 17.112.152.32
    accountss-macbook:~ accounts$ host 17.112.152.32
    32.152.112.17.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer A17-112-152-32.apple.com.
    32.152.112.17.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer eg-www.apple.com.
    accountss-macbook:~ accounts$
Substitute where appropriate with your own values. ie the FQDN of your server and its private IP address. Dig should return something like this:
    accountss-macbook:~ accounts$ dig www.apple.com
    ; <<>> DiG 9.4.1-P1 <<>> www.apple.com
    ;; global options: printcmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 62100

    ;; QUESTION SECTION:

    ;; ANSWER SECTION:

No the Question and Answer return. Finally use the changeip command: sudo changeip -checkhostname
If you don’t see a line telling you there is nothing to change then DNS is not configured properly and it needs to be sorted out. You can do this using changeip, an example of this would be:
sudo changeip - oldIPaddress newIPaddress oldhostname newhostname
This would work for a Standalone server
sudo changeip /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 oldIPaddress newIPaddress oldhostname newhostname
would work for an Open Directory Master. However you could simply archive the LDAP database - as already mentioned - demote, sort out DNS manually, restart, test DNS and re-promote.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • What is DirectoryTools?  Why is it touching network home directories?

Our normally pacific OD/AFP home directory setup has occasional hiccups. A quick summary of the setup:
    1) 10.4.11 XServe running OD master (and another machine as slave)
    2) 10.4.11 XServe/XServe RAID serving home directories via AFP
    3) 10.4.11/10.5.7 desktops as clients with all users (~50) having network home directories
The hiccups are very occasional, but annoying as rebooting or restarting AFP on the home directory server is the only way of fixing things. The symptoms are:
    1) Users get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the user account 'my user' at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server." message.
    2) On the server, DirectoryTools is running for each home directory in turn. For example:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Resources/DirectoryTools 30081564 /Volumes/home/a_username 5111 1001 1 user English a_username
The 5111 and 1001 are the user's UID and GID. This in turn runs find, which does
    /usr/bin/find /Volumes/home/a_username -exec touch {} ;
The touch plays merry **** with incremental backups, because suddenly everything was altered this morning.
Google has failed me, and I'm pretty much resigned to not finding a solution to this problem unless someone here has come across it in the past.

  • Network Home Directories Problem

I am running home directories for my users off our server, and every time someone tries to log in, this message comes up
You are unable to log in to the user account "whatever the account is" at this time
Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred
    any ideas?

It sounds like your configuration maybe as follows.
Main Server mounts VTRACK directly and shares it over the network
Multiple Client Servers mount the VTRACK via the Main Server
It has been well known for years that a single Mac logging in to a network home directory will not allow a second simultaneous login when using AFP (or SMB). With NFS it is possible.
What you should be doing is as follows, either option 1 or option 2
    Option 1
Build a SAN using a Fibre Channel switch, Fibre Channel connections between each server and the switch, and the VTRACK
Run XSan on one of the servers to manage shared access to the VTRACK
Have each server directly access the VTRACK
Have each Client Server share their connection to the VTRACK via AFP
Have a subset of the user accounts allocated to each Client Server
Then say 25% of the users will login via a particular Client server, and 25% via another, and so on.
    Option 2
Have seperate RAID systems (possibly VTRACK) one per server
These would not be in a SAN, they would instead be used as DAS (Direct Attached Storage)
Each server would have its own and share it via AFP
Like Option 1 each client server would handle a subset of the users
Then say 25% of the users would use Client Server 1, 25% Client Server 2, and so on.
All the users would be defined in a single Open Directory system on the Main Server but on the tab which says where their Home Directory is, some would be defined as being on Client Server 1, some on 2 and so on.

  • IPhoto '11 and network home directories

    Hi,
We are using iPhoto '11 and network home directories which live on a SMB file server. When a user attempts to run iPhoto they get the following error: "Warning. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
iPhoto '09 works fine in our environment, and if the library is relocated to the Macintosh HD > Users > Shared directory it can be loaded. This appears to be a new bug in iPhoto '11. Am i correct?

iPhoto was never designed for a network environment. It's low end user application. If you want an image management application this is designed from networks and multi users you'll need a DAM (digital asset management) application like Media Expression.
You can learn about EM and other DAM apps at The DAM Forum where those applications are discussed and evaluated by professional photographers.
You can request adding a new feature to iPhoto via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Can not log into server computer with any accounts - "You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

I have a Mac mini running the latest version of OS X and Server. Been running fine and flawlessly. However, I had a strange problem with the iCloud preferences panel crashing when I tried to access it, so I rebooted. Now I can not log into the system with any accounts. My master admin account (along with all the others) gives me the error:
You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I am able to see the server from other macs and I can log into it using the same account, but it only shows me a few of the shared folders I have access to but NOT to my main directories.
Rebooting into Command-R and doing a disk utility, I try and repair permission on that drive and get a bunch of errors like:
ACL found but not expected on Users
    Repaired "Users"
ACL found but not expected on Users/.localized
    Repaired "Users/.localized"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared
    Repaired "Users/shared"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared/.localized
    Repaired "Users/Shared/.localized"
    Permissions repair complete.
But rebooting is no joy...same problem. Any idea what is going on or how to repair it? Should I do a time machine restore? Complete new OS X install? Any idea what is causing this or how to salvage it?

Got everything to re-install and it worked fine...for a few hours. Then I came in to find ALL of my network users deleted. Just GONE. Then found out the Open Directory was trashed and was unable to open, recover or restore from a backup. Looks like I may have a bad drive here.
I installed a new drive in the system, re-installed and so far (for a couple of hours anyway) the system seems to be working and stable.

  • "Sorry, we are unable to log you in" message when trying to purchase a product. Any help please?

I am trying to purchase (or even use a trial version at least) a product in extension manager and it gives me "Sorry we are unable to log you in" message no matter how many times I press "Log in" button.
    Would appreciate any help please

    Hi Alwaysadobe,
Glad to hear that you have solved the problem. We also got the help from Adobe Exchange team. They gave the steps below for this issue. If you have any other problems, please let us know. Thanks.

    ========================================================================================== ============================
If the user has already created a new AdobeID and tried to deleted file at the Application Support/Adobe/opm.db and it is still not working he should try this.
you could suggest that the user closes all applications and Repair Disk Permissions on OSX:
    2. Open Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    3. Select your startup disk on the left of the Disk Utility window
    4. Select First Aid from the tabs
Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button
It is always a good idea to run Repair Disk Permissions on OSX after an update, say from 10.8 to 10.8.x.
On Windows he can Run sfc /scannow In the command prompt.
    1. Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
He could also try and disable any 3rd party firewall, antivirus programs. I hope this helps.

  • Error: "Sorry, we are unable to log you in".

In the Adobe Exchange Panel of Photoshop Cs6 (MAC), whenever i try to download a extansion, or when i click in "my stuf", it says "Sorry, we are unable to log you in", and below there's a button "Sing in". Nothing happens when i click in this button.
    Please, help me!

Do you have a full verison of Photoshop or are you using a trial version? When you installed Photoshop, you should have been asked for a signin using your adobeID. Di this happen and were you able to sign in sucessfully.
Adobe Exchange using Adobe's Indentity Management System and tries to log you in using the same credentials as what you used to login to you Photoshop. That calls seems to be failing. Ideally when you click sign in, the Adobe Application Manager sign in screen should appear prompting you to sign in.
Are there any other setting on your system that could be conflicting? If you were part of any prerelease program and created an AdobeID using that Identity Management system, there might be a conflict.
Let us know a bit more of your setup and we can try to help you out here.
    Thanks

  • Sorry, we are unable to log you in.  Please try again later

    Hi there,
I see a few posts are online over the last year relating to this issue, but as far as I can see there are none that have a definitive answer - that's a bit shocking.
So I need to install the server behavior extension to DW CC and to do this I either need a direct download link for the extension (which there doesn't seem to be) or download it using Adobe Exchange.
However, as soon as I try to commence download or go to My Stuff in the DW Adobe Exchange panel, I get the infamous "Sorry, we are unable to log you in.  Please try again later".  It still didn't work later.
This is a fully registered version of DW CC, only recently installed.  AdobeExchange V1.1.0
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Thanks for getting in touch. You're correct that this issue has affected others in the past, however the root cause has always differed on a case-by-case basis - hence why there hasn't been one definitive resolution on this issue.
So that we can work out what is going wrong in your particular case, could you please email me (fgregor at adobe dot com) with the following log file?
    On Windows:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Exchange\adobeexchange.log
    On Mac:
    /Users/<UserName>/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Exchange/adobeexchange.log
We'll do our best to get to the bottom of this as quickly as we can.
    Best wishes,
    Fraser

  • Unable to use network home directories on a 2nd volume

    Hi,
I am having a problem hosting network home directories on 10.4.4 server. Through the help of AFP 548's instructions I have had them working fine when the users folder is at /users however I would like the data stored on another hard drive for easy backups, etc. But when I set this up I just get the unable to connect due to an error message on the client machines.
I have tried setting up another folder on the boot volume and that works fine so I think the settings I am inputting are correct but as soon as I select a folder off the boot drive I run into problems again.
    Any ideas?

    Any ideas?
Yes, but it might also be helpful to know specifically what error message your users are getting when they try to log in.
If you've correctly set up your share point and network mount record as criss describes but you're still having problems, it may be due to the length of the path to the user's home folder. For more information on that point, see KnowledgeBase article number 107695.
One question: can your users find their home directories when they log in to the server using Go > Connect to Server in the Finder?

  • "You are no longer logged into your profile" - So....Palm just decides to delete my data???

I was told to post this over in this Palm forum also so hopefully SOMEONE from Palm/HP will address this... I could not find a bug report area but perhaps someone can log this.
So after months of (mostly) happily using a Pre Plus, Wednesday I get the message that I am no longer logged into my profile, and do I want to reboot or erase my data??!! I googled, and yup, it's an issue....So I reboot...same options, this reboot, it starts and asks me if I want English as my language. Woops!!! No data!
Now of course palm profile does not backup anything on my phone really....I sync direct to Exhange and use Chapura sync to a desktop Outlook PST file. So I spend the next 5 hours restoring and syncing. Just crazy.  Why can't it just say that you are not currently logged in, we will try again in an hour??  And what right does palm have to delete MY data that the profile does not even backup???  My exchange and chapura sync'ed data?  Sure, I can re-sync with both of those. But my Chapura only if I am on the same wi-fi network as the local PC.  So what does that mean if I am traveling?  And re-syncing a huge volume of contacts takes forever.  And you lose all the linked contacts also!
So I call the carrier and Palm. The carrier says...."well if your phone originally was under another phone number and you changed it as part of an upgrade, that can cause it." Huh? This can affect me months later I say??? My phone number upgrade change was done BEFORE I even turned on the phone. Palm does not even know about that first number!
So I called Palm.  The guy says it can happen if 2 people use the same e-mail or credit card in their palm profile. Now since it won't even allow you to setup the same e-mail twice, I'd like to know how THAT would happen.  No one on my plan uses the same card.
So the question is. We know this happens sometimes. Is there any source with credibility that really knows WHY this happens??? And does any setting reduce the likelihood of it happening again?  And why can't Palm make the results less debilating?  There is NO REASON that it needs to delete your data.  This is crazy.
Also, other than my few purchased apps, none of my critical data is even backed up by the Palm Profile!!! I still had to re-create all my POP3 accounts, change all my preferences back, re-sync with Exchange, re-sync with Chapura, and then re-marry all the contact duplicates that Synergy did not handle right. So what's the worth?
Can the Palm Profile/backup  be turned off? Does changing the palm profile in the apps perferences setting from "submit password every 4 hours" (whatever that means) to only at purchase help??
Do you have any other options when you get that reboot r erase prompt? Pull the battery without answering the prompt perhaps???????
If I am on the road and this happened, I would be without half my contacts until I returned which is unacceptable. This is very disappointing. I cannot believe the default action is not "let's TRY AGAIN", and not, "hey, let's erase all of this user's data on him"!!!
If this happens one or two more times, I have had it.  I will be looking at another OS and phone after having Palm phones and organizers for the last 10 years or so.  This is unacceptable.

Thanks for the reply.  Nowhere in here do I get the sense that Palm even thinks this is a problem or are going to work on fixing it.  It implies Palm thinks it is okay and the problem is me, the user, the customer, because I do not want my data resided on Palm's servers or Google's servers.  Does Palm understand this is an issue whether my data is on my home PC or in the cloud and in Palm Profile???  The issue is not how I choose to store just one of my calendars and contact lists (out of 3).  The issue is a bug in the Palm profile system.
The first point is this.... Regardless of HOW this happens, Palm should not immediately erase all of my data!!!!  Let's say I DID sync all my data to Palm Profile.  I STILL would not want to have to re-download everything just because of some glitch with your backup servers, the carrier's network, or my phone!!!  Go look at some pre forums.  You will see many people that DO sync all of their data to their profile, and they are STILL upset with this Palm BUG.  If security is the concern, how about asking for a password first vs. just asking whether I want to reboot or erase all data?  If it is really me, I would know the password!  Your answer seems to imply that what is happening is OKAY. It is NOT okay whether I sync everything to Palm profile or not!
Further, even if all my data WAS backed up to Palm Profile, you still lose all preferences, all manually matched synergy contacts, etc.... etc... Again, I would still be very upset if all my data was erased even if EVERYTHING was backed up to Palm profile.  DON'T ERASE MY DATA!!!
I have no problem re-synching my exchange e-mail after a problem.  It works from the road, etc.  However after 10 years, Palm decided to not suport the syncing of home PC's with the Pre.  An unfortunate decision as Palm was a pioneer in this.  You talk about security....Perhaps some of us do not want our data stored on Palm servers or google servers!!! Yes, indeed, in the event of a crash I cannot restore from the road. I can live with this if the crash was from a hardware or software issue.  But it is NOT OKAY if it is caused by Palm just because of some system glitch.  Since you are not restoring my home PC data anyway, why erase it?
You talk about being logged out of your profile.  My phone was just used, and it was sitting on my desk.  Just sitting there. And then it popped up that "I was no longer logged into my profile".   What causes this?  Why does it not give me a chance to re-login?  How come after the erase of data and reboot I was then magically "logged in" and it was working?  Did the person that was trying to steal my non-existent data in my palm profile stop trying?
So are you telling me that someone was trying to use my phone SIM, on a pre plus, with my e-mail, and had my password....and trying to login, and that is why I got the message?  And then magically right after I rebooted, they stopped trying and all was okay???
I do not believe that is the case.  And again, if it is, ask for my password, or a security question, or SOMETHING to confirm that it is me.  And a simple google search will tell Palm/HP that this is a problem many of us have had.  If I have it consistently, as I said, a 10 year customer is gone.

PS.  A reply that said:  "Palm is aware of this problem and will correct it with the next software update" would be a lot more comforting.
