"You can't open the application "Install Mac OS X"...

because it is not supported on this architecture."
I don't know why either? I am currently running OS X 10.5.8 and thought I would just upgrade easy peasy lemon squeezy to Snow today but hit a bump in the road as soon as I clicked o "Install". I tried searching this forum but wasn't hitting anything. Could someone steer me in a good direction or let me know what I am doing wrong? lol Thank you.

I haven't tried doing anything further about this install as I'm cleaning up my computer but I noticed yesterday when I got my copy of Tangled with the Digital copy, my DVD was having trouble. It would read 10% before it said it was done and really wasn't. (this happened before with my old drive before the drive just died) I just BARELY (on Tuesday) picked up my Mac from the Apple Store from having it's optical drive replaced but I'm starting to think, I have a secondary issue or else, this optical drive is having issues too. ::sigh:: Time to make an appointment for the Genius bar again.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

you probably have an incomplete/corrupt download.
to confirm check the file size against the expected file size.
then re-download perhaps with a different browser.

  • Dvd software will not open "You can't open the application Install because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.

I am trying to open the application for educational software and the message You can't open the application Install because PowerPC applications are no longer supported....keeps appearing...help

The installer is for a PowerPC-based Mac, last produced in 2006.
Often, that software is just a "reader" that displays a menu of items to select from. The files themselves are in folders on the disk and you may be able to access them without using the installer.

  • You can't open the application install because PowerPC applications are no longer supported?

I have just recently got a textbook for one of my collge courses and it came with a CD to use for tutoring and exercises. When I inserted the CD a box came up, as if it was ready for me to install, but there is a Slash through Install. I clicked on it and it gave me the message above. I need to use this CD for my Class, someone please help!

You need Rosetta (transparent emulation software to run older PowerPC applications on Intel based Macs) to run your CD and Lion no longer includes it.  If an updated version of the CD, written for Intel, is not available, you need to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels in Lion:

It means what it says - it's not compatible with modern Macs. You need to buy a current version.

No. PowerPC apps will not run on Mac OS X Lion. There is no way to get around it.

  • Just downloaded mavericks, now iPhoto won't load because of an error message that says "You can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac" . I have a 17" MacBook Pro, mid 2010 model running 2.53 GHz and Intel Core I5,

I just downloaded the new Mavericks operating sytem on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 17" 2.53GHz, Intel Core I5 machine. My IPhoto is no longer working at all, I'm getting an error message that says - "You Can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac". I also loaded Mavericks onto my other MacBook Pro 17", mid 2009 model and everything works fine. I would think that the newer Mac would easily work with IPhoto. Also, when I try to download from the App Store, it asks for my Apple ID and Password, I enter it, and then the little spinning color wheel just spins forever, with nothing ever happening. I tried downloading the IPhoto Upgrade but it never actually downloads, HELP!!!

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

  • I am unable to open Photo on my MacBook Pro after installing ilife 11 from a disc.  The message I get says "you can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.  What can I do?!

I am unable to open iPhoto on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.3)  after installing ilife 11 from a disc.  The message I get is "you can't open the application iPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete.  What can I do?!  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reinstall it.This time delete the receipts first.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
    Important:
As you're on 10.9.3 you'll need to update iPhoto to v9.5 before opening it. Use Software update.

I have a big crossbar mark over my FF4 icon after I've installed and replaced FF3. When I try to open the software, I get "You can't open the application "Firefox" because it is not supported on this architecture." What's up with that?

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • I am trying to install Final cut pro studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported

I am trying to install Final cut pro 5 studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported. My computer is New. Is their a link I can go to get tech support?

You won't find any help at tech support ... other than telling you the facts: Intel processor Macs require FCP 5.1 or higher.  FCP 5.0 and earlier were written for PowerPC processor Macs, long before Apple switched to using Intel processors.
And then there's the issue of the OS.  OS 7 will allow FCP 7 (and sometimes even FCP 6) to work OK, but versions earlier than that have spotty operation on Lion.
Here's a brief history of full FCP versions and recommended OS compatibility:
    * = requires PPC             ** = works with both PPC and Intel                          *** = require Intel
    FCP 1.0*       OS 9
    FCP 2.0*       OS 9
    FCP 3.0*       OS 9, OS 10.1, OS 10.2
    FCP 4.0*       OS 10.2, 10.3
    FCP 4.5*       OS 10.3
    FCP 5.0*       OS 10.3 (OS 10.4?)
    FCP 5.1**     OS 10.4, 10.5
    FCP 6.0**     OS 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 (OS 10.7?)
    FCP 7.0***    OS 10.6, OS 10.7
    FCP-X***       OS 10.6, OS 10.7
Essentially, you have a newer Intel processor Mac with a new OS and very old, incompatible software.   You might be able to find a used version of Final Cut Studio 3 on sites like ebay or craigslist as it is no longer offered by Apple as an upgrade.
Alternatively, you could purchase and download FCP-X, but it is an entirely different application, sharing virtually nothing with previous versions of FCP.
