"You cannot copy 'iPhoto Library' to the destination because ...

++its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters."
This is the error message I get when I attempt to copy my iPhoto Library folder (58.07 GB) from my Macintosh HD to my (just purchased) Lacie 1TB 'Rugged" external hard drive.
I partitioned the external hard drive (using Disk Utility) - the partition table is GUID and the drive is formatted MAC OS Extended (Journaled). The partition to which I want to copy the iPhoto Library is named 'Images'. There is no way that there is anything on there called iPhoto Library.
I need to backup my iPhoto Library so that I can erase (re-format) my hard drive on my MacBook prior to installing OS X 10.6.x !!
I'm terrified that I will lose my 15,000 plus images saved in iPhoto if I cannot resolve this issue.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem?
Cheers

Thank you for your response LarryHN. I do use SuperDuper and I have made a full bootable copy of my Macintosh HD drive on a different partition of the Lacie 'Rugged'.
However, I thought that may not solve my problem because I'm presently running 10.5.8 and I need to erase my Macintosh HD and reformat it to get rid of the Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) formatting.
If I were to re-format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install OS X 10.6 wouldn't trying to 'restore' from the Super Duper backup send me back to 10.5.8???
Please excuse my ignorance because I'm really not sure about how 'restores' work - I thought it would send me backwards .....
Cheers

I believe you will find you can again sync Photos if you delete the "iPod Photo Cache", but predict that any subsequent attempt will fail.  In my case, the enxt sync removes all the photos again - I've seen other reports of error messages upon sync.  Mine just fails silently. :-)

  • HT5664 how do you copy the iPhoto library to the hard drive

I copied some photos onto a DVD and my new iMac won't let me download them into iPhoto.  I don't understand the instructions to download the iPhoto library into the hard drive.  How do I do that?  What do I do once that part is downloaded?

    1. Drag it.
    2. If you're moving loose files, open iPhoto and import or drag them into it. If you're moving an iPhoto library, double-click it.

I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

This happens on systems running OS X 10.3.9 on up to 10.4.6. It can happen with a filename as small as "test.txt" or something over 31 characters in length.
Is anyone else having this problem?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Please know that the limitation is not in OS X, but an interaction with your SNAP device: the SNAP device uses SMB (although an older-style AFP filesharing connection option should also be on by default), and as such the drive inside is likely formatted as FAT32 (or an emulation of same) which does not allow/permit the same characters (or filename lenght) as HFS+ (native Mac drive format)

  • I would like to copy my iPhoto (9.4.1) library from my Mac Pro (10.7.5) to a Macbook Pro (10.7.5). Can I drag the iPhoto Library to Air Drop and send them to the MacBook? Will that then be a usable iPhoto library on the Macbook?

I would like to copy my iPhoto (9.4.1) library from my Mac Pro (10.7.5) to a Macbook Pro (10.7.5). Can I drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures folder to Air Drop and send them to the MacBook? If I then move that to the Pictures folder on the MacBook will that then be a usable iPhoto library on the Macbook?

It would be better if you could connect the two Macs via a hard wired LAN to copy the library from the Mac Pro to the MacBook.  Wireless connections can have momentary dropouts which could affect the reliable copying of files.
If you do go with Air Drop be sure to open and inspect the copied library closely to confirm it was a successulf copy.

  • How do you move your iphoto library to an external hard drive--step by step because I dont even know the basics--Help!

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing.  I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it.  I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????"  Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this.  Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash
Check and make sure that your backup system is backing up yor external drive

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Unable to copy iphoto library from external drive to internal drive

    iPhoto '09 8.1.2 (424)
I have a very large iPhoto library (282GB, 34k photos) spread between multiple computers, which as been consolidated on a single external drive now (1 TB Western Digital Mac OS Extended (Case-senstive, Journaled). I'm trying to get the big library on the external drive back on my Mac Pro so I can break the merged libraries into smaller libraries in a safe fashion.
There is nothing on the internal drive, but I keep getting an error about 62GB into the copying that reads: "You cannot copy "[Library Name]" to the destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters." ... But there's nothing on the internal drive!!!
I've renamed the library on the external drive, then tried copying it -- no dice. I've created a new folder on the internal drive and tried copying it to the new folder -- same error at exactly the same spot in the transfer. I've even reformatted then zeroed out the internal drive -- same error, same spot. Anyone know a solution or have ideas about what I'm doing wrong?
    Many thanks!

I think the error report is bogus and the issue is not on the receiving volume but a locked or damaged file within the library.
Try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
FWIW, I don't see what you gain by a: splitting the library at all and b: copying it back to the MacPro to do it.

  • I am trying to copy iphoto library Error Code 36

I am trying to copy iphoto library from one hard drive to another and get the message The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36) = Need to back iy up or my wife will kill me. thanks for help

Here is something you can try:
Obtain iPhoto Library Manager. It is an inexpensive program you can download. Run it and tell it to REBUILD your iPhoto Library from your original iPhoto Library. It will create a NEW file in a destination that you specify (you can specify the other hard drive and thus get a backup all at once) and try to recreate the iPhoto Library based on the info from your original one. Depending on the problem causing your -36 file error, iPhoto Library Manager may (a) successfully recreate your entire photo library successfully on the other hard drive; (b) recreate all of your original photo library except for the part that is damaged; or (c) won't be able to finish at all if the disk problems are severe enough.
If (c) happens, you may have to copy the actual photos individually out of the iPhoto Library and into a new iPhoto Library. The actual photos are inside the iPhoto Library. You can find them by control-click once on the iPhoto Library and select Show Package Contents. The folder called Originals or Masters has the photos (originals) and a folder called Modified or Previews has the edited photos. I suggest COPYING (not moving) these folders to the external drive. You will then need to re-import the actual photos inside these folders to a new iPhoto Library.

  • Best backup method? / copying iphoto library to alternate Mac iphoto

Since Iphoto '09 no longer keeps the .IMG photo files in the Pictures directory, do you export all photos to folders to get the .IMG files back online? Then you back them up?
I was going to back the .IMG files up to a cd.
I have some DVDs, so I don't know if that is more sufficient with more disk space capacity. I could write them to a DVD.
Since Iphoto is not saving/storing .IMG files automatically anymore, then I suppose I should also back the Iphoto library file to cd or DVD.
Additionally, we are a Mac family with 3 other Macs. I was thinking that I could back the photos up by putting the Iphoto library onto one of them. When I shared my Iphoto library on our home network I did it in read only format. I went onto the other Mac and moved its Iphoto library out of the way. Then I tried to copy the main shared Iphoto library over to this Mac's hard drive. It would not let me.
I told the second Mac's Iphoto to use the library on the original Mac. It said that it was a different version of Iphoto and would have to update the library. Again I had my Iphoto library shared in Read-only mode. I allowed the update to occur. The photos sync'd to the second Mac Iphoto.
Then I couldn't use my iphoto library on the original machine. It actually changed the shared file system. I ordered and installed ILife/Iphoto '09 on both machines. I can now access all of my photos within Iphoto on the original system. But since I cannot copy the shared Iphoto library over to the hard drive of the second Mac, I am unsure how to proceed in using the second Mac as a backup for the Iphoto library.
I suppose I would want all undeleted photos backed up with whatever the latest version of the pictures is. It just takes a while to back up to cd, and I have to break it up to fit on multiple cd's since I have a 5GB library. That's why I thought I could back them up to the other system.
Also my computer, since I upgraded to Iphoto '09 is very slow if Iphoto is open. So I suspect I must be reaching some limit on the size of the library. I am concerned I may loose all my photos so I want to back up before that happens.
    Thanks

    beccah

I'm sorry but this makes no sense. What do you mean by a .IMG file? That's a suffix you can find on a disk image and iPhoto has simply never imported or managed such files.
By ".IMG file", do you mean your Photos?
