You cannot open the application "Disk Utility.app" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
I mounted a disk image, which popped up a message about Disk Utility not being supported on this type of mac. I ignored it because the image seemed to be mounted, and I was able to drag the app icon out of the image and into my application folder.
Then I tried to launch the app and it wouldn't launch because it "may be corrupted" or something along those lines. I didn't pay close attention because I thought hey, it was just a bad download, I'll try again.
Now I can't open Disk Utility. Every time I try I get this message. I've seen a similar message a few times since updating to Mavericks with other applications (one I can remember is Text Wranger occasionially complains it can't open a file, but it can, and trying again usually gets it to work... This previous experience led to my cavalier approach to the Disk Utility wierdness)
How can I get Disk Utility working again?
You will need to locate the Terminal app in your Mac's Utilities folder. It looks like this:
Find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
Open Terminal.
Copy (triple-click to select the entire line) and Paste the following line into the Terminal window, followed by the Return or Enter key:
file /Applications/Utilities/Disk\ Utility.app/Contents/MacOS/Disk\ Utility
Copy and paste the results of that command in a reply.

All of the sudden my System Preferences in Mavericks has stopped working and I get the error message:
You can't open the application "System Preferences.app" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
It was working fine before this, and I have run Permissions Repair, restarted to another partition and run Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro, but none of those has helped. Anyone have any ideas why this happened, and what I can do to fix it?See this entire thread

Hello
I seem to be having trouble with my scanner and my MAC. Nothing has changed on my MAC but my scanner refuses to scan. And a couple of other items tell me that they are incompatable with my MAC. Any thoughts?
thanks
BevBev,
Unfortunatley you have not provided any useful information other than your Epson app will not run. I would recommend using Image Capture which is pre-installed on your computer.

Just installed CS4. Ai and Ps open fine. i get this prompt with InDesign.
You cannot open the application Adobe InDesign CS4 because it is not supported on this architecture.
any clues on how resolve this?
thanks!I'm having exactly the same problem with InDesign from CS4 Design Standard (Photoshop and Illustrator both work), and I don't know what to do. I've called up the Adobe support line five times, and received five different answers, none of which have worked (and on three other occasions, my call was dropped, once after an hour on hold).
One of the Adobe tech support people said to me "None of CS4 works with either 10.5.8 or Snow Leopard. We will issue a patch for that soon" - which directly contradicts what Adobe itself says on this site. I also went to see a Mac Genius, who couldn't help either.
I have a 2GHz Macbook with 2GB RAM running 10.5.8. I've run the uninstall, and the Adobe Clean Script, I've repaired permissions on my drive (which isn't case sensitive), restarted, reinstalled, tried installing on an external drive and then tried downloading the trial, in case it's the install CD - nothing works.
Any suggestions, anyone? Might there be a problem with my library that is stopping the install? Something else?? I bought CS4 for InDesign primarily, this is not good. -
I migrated all files from OS 10.7 to OS 10.8 through time machine. However, I always see error packages like the following if I want to run some .pkg files.
You can't open the application "..." because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
But when I switch to a different account, then the .pkg files can be run. Therefore, I think that there might be something wrong with my account configuration files. But I don't know which one. Does anybody which one might cause the problem and how to fix it? Thanks!softwater wrote:
And both are on the same startup disk, right? Because, to be honest, it's hard to figure out how you could have this problem with both accounts on the same startup disk, so I just want to check that before we get too involved.
Assuming that's the case, the first thing I'd do is remove all those except Dropbox from the list, then restart the mac and test for the problem. If that doesn't solve it, run this free analytical tool and post the results back here so we can see if anything stands out:

I have removed these login items. But I can not restart my mac now and I will have to restart it later.
Here is the output of etrecheck. Would you please take a look if there is anything wrong?

Hi, I am not sure if I sending this to the right forum. I am becoming increasingly frustrated as recently I am getting more of these messages (as in heading of this question) and I am not sure what to do. The apps I am trying to install meet all the requirements but I cannot open them.

No Mac with an Intel CPU has ever supported Classic.
I take that back. We have an iMac Core 2 Duo, basically the same as yours. One of the few Mac models with an Intel CPU that shipped with its own Intel version of Tiger, which does indeed support Classic. Tiger was never available in the retail version for Intel Macs; PowerPC only.
So I'm guessing that yes, you are referring to old Motorola 680x0 Classic apps. There is no way to run them in Leopard or later, other than than a third party emulator like Sheepshaver. However, that is only the emulator. To get that to work, you need an Apple ROM, which is illegal for you to own unless you also own the exact same Mac the ROM is from. Beyond that, I've read many reports that it doesn't work all that well.
Kurt: This is the first I have EVER heard of an Intel Mac running Classic natively, without emulation (and I have done quite a bit of research)! Please reconfirm that this is correct, and if you can reconfirm it correctness, you might want to let the researchers noted in the two links below know about these abilities.
Also, your statement regarding Mac ROMs is too broad and overly restrictive. The emaculation link below indicates a method for extraction of Classic Mac ROMs from an active Apple download link for a ROMs update. I just tried the link last night and it is still active.
I always caution those who make such legal pronouncements to exercise caution; as they tend to keep users from solutions that are otherwise legally available. And I am sure that is not your intention:

and here is some additional information on SheepShaver:
http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/...ntel-macs.html
I have had considerable success with SheepShaver, running this version of Risk II for the OP of a post on another forum as well as being able to access legacy MORE and WordPerfect files in my archives:

A day or two ago I went through installing Adobe InDesign CS4 on Leopard OS X.5.8. After what appears to be a successful installati
on, in launching InDesign CS4 the message " You can't open the application "Adobe InDesign CS4" because it is not supported on this
architecture" comes up". Calling in to support and speaking with the agent who read through previous posts, suggested to me that I
should try the same fix that has been suggested when I ran across an error when installing Adobe InDesign CS4 on another separate ha
rd drive externally connected to this computer running Snow Leopard OS X.6.1 for the error reading: "Damaged &/or incomplete install
ation" when launching afterwards. The support technician told me to first delete with the uninstall Adobe InDesign CS4, InDesign.
Following this I am told to run the CS4 Cleanup Utility. I restart the computer each and every time after running each of the utili
ties. Now I am told to install InDesign as a trial version from the DVD and after installation to go ahead & enter the serial numbe
r. When launching InDesign CS4 after installation got back the same error as before: "You can't open the application "Adobe InDesig
n CS4" because it is not supported on this architecture" comes up". Followed KB404711 article and no success. What else can be don
e to fix this issue?
This morning contacted Adobe Support regarding this response:
After having a detailed reserach on your issue i acme to the conclusion
that the problem you are having is not related to Adobe software but its
in fact related to your MAC version ( OSX-5.8). While reseraching your
issue i came across
to many forums where a lot of postings were about the similar error but
with different products the only comon thing was all the Errors were
with Mac machine , also when you check the system requirements for
Adobe Indesign Cs4
by going to the following link
http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/systemreqs/?promoid=DRHXE you
will find the Mac OS version supported are from Mac OS X
v10.4.11–10.5.4. but we do support Snow Leoprad , so i would like
to advise to you to either contact your system manufacturer or upgrade
to Snow Leopard ( mac os x 10.6)
I have been told that my case is being sent to Level 2 agents and that it can take 24-48 hours for a response. In the meantime I decided to see what the Support Forums can do for me. Until then I am down. Thanks for the help.In the application folder there is a folder 'Adobe InDesign CS4' within which there is just the application file. I would expect there should be more file there??
I've un-installed and installed again - still the same.
Even downloaded the dmg again and done thwe whole thing over again. -
I have a Mac PowerPC G5 and i just installed the Version 10.5.4 to be able to install Virtual DjLE , and after I installed it, i try to open it and there was an error msg saying : " you can't open the application virtual dj le because it is not supported on this architecture"
What can I do to resolve this? ... Can someone help me with this?? ..
Thank you for your help!Hi, we're out of luck...

I just used migration assistant to bring all my data over from my old Macbook to my new iMac. Then I deleted the admin user which was created automatically when I first booted up the iMac. All worked well, except for iPhoto which niow gives me this message. Annoying because I upgraded to the iMac for the big screen to work with my photos.
Any ideas folks?

"You can't open the application 'Adobe Flash CS4' because it is not supported on this architecture"
Hi:
I purchased Adobe Design Premium Suite 4, and all of the other applications function properly except for Flash. I ran Disk Warrior and fixed all permissions, and rebuilt my directory. This is a new install.
I have also tried re-installing Flash twice, but have had no success!
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this Flash error?
Thanks,
RobI would first quit Illustrator and then;
I would go to Users/username/Library/preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings folder and trash that settings folder.
I believe if that does not work it is a permissions problem so repair your permissions and see if that helps.
if not log in as a new user see if you get the same error. -

when i try to open the iPhoto app, i getting a message "you can't open the application because it is not supported on this type of mac"
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always. -
After updating iTunes to 11.1.4 as suggested by automatic updates I get the message:
"You cannot open the application iTunes because it is not supported on this type of Mac"
Why did it let me do the update then?
How do I undo the uodate to iTunes?
This is on a Mac Mini running OSX 10.6.8 with 1GB memWhat processor do you have?
If it's a CoreDuo (as opposed to a Core2Duo), then you ave a 32 bit OS, and no... 11.1.4 won't run on a 32 bit OS.
=Downgrading from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7=
Back up your computer first, in case the wrong things happen.
Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7. I can't provide details on this since I do not have a newer computer. With mine it is very simple but I believe on newer computers iTunes has been integrated into the operating system. On mine I just go to my applications folder and drag iTunes to the trash. See below for possible suggestions on how to remove.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20431349
Get iTunes 10.7. Apple does not keep many old version up on its web site. I always keep an iTunes installer on my archive drive so I can have access to old versions . This one is hidden but it is on an official Apple site:
iTunes 10.7 for OS X http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
You will have to rescue your old iTunes library from your Previous Libraries folder and rename it iTunes Library.itl because a newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file. See:
