You don't have permission to save the file "***" in the folder "Users"

I changed name of Home folder according to this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428?viewlocale=en_US
Everything was OK, but today I switch on Aperture 3, and when I'm trying to import some pictures, I have this message: 'You don't have permission to save the file "cichy" in the folder "Users".'... "cichy" is previous name of my Home folder. Any solution, how I can fix it?

Thanks for quick answerr. Unfortunately I have OS X 10.8.4 - in article are 10 steps for OS X 10.5 or later, and 43 steops for OS X 10.4.11 and earlier... I didn't do step 28 - should I do the instructions for KeyChain?

Photoshop CS5(64Bit): "You don't have permission to save to this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission."  I am the administrator and give myself permission. What can I do to save the file? This is the user's PC, licensed PS CS5 software and Win 7 OS.

Temporarily save to another folder, until you figure it out.
Just because you are the owner and are the sole administrator, does not always guarantee that you have permission. There are several folders that you can not access no matter how hard you try. As for folders in your document folder, it is more likely a basic permission setting that took on permissions of a copied file. Some folders and files are set to a child/parent default setting, meaning the child folder/file (the one you are accessing) has the identical settings of its parent and when the parent changes, so does the child.
You can alter the parent or the child folder/file.
Right click on the folder/file select properties.
    Click on the security tab.
Click on each of the group names and see what permissions are set.
You can then edit a group if necessary.
If it will not allow it, you may need to use the advanced button to create a new copy of the group which should happen when you alter its settings (In other words, you don't have to physically create the copy, it does it for you when you OK the changes)
The administrator should have full access to the folder in the documents folder, if you are listed as an associate of the administrator group your name should also be listed there with full access. The System should also have full access.
All other groups should have reading access only if they exist.

  • "You don't have permission to save in this location." Cannot save any files anywhere. All permissions open, all other browsers save OK in same place. Why?

I have created a clean profile in Profile Manager, and used the Reset Firefox tool. The only way I can save files is to use another browser. IE and Chrome have no problems saving files to the exact same folders.
This seemed to have started with the last update on 10/5/2013.

Maybe something changed in the program shortcut you use to start Firefox. Can you check right-click > Properties > Compatbility tab and make sure nothing is selected there?
''I've never tried this myself, but the forum has a standard set of steps for a "clean reinstall" of Firefox to replace damaged program files. During this process, you are not removing personal settings, but you are removing some shared add-on folders, which would affect Windows Media Player and perhaps other plugins/extensions installed that way.''
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete (or if you're nervous, move or rename) the Firefox program folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (32-bit)
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox (64-bit)
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    Does that help?

I believe I have set myself as administrator.  Administrator appears beneath my name at sign on.  I skipped creating a password as I am the only user. When downloading a file for my canon scaner I got the message "C:\Program Files (x86)\Canon\Cannon Download\tb4135_en.exe.  You don't have permission to save in this location.  Contact the administrator to obtain permission.  Would you like to save in the ..........folder instead? I realise that it is not good sense to run permanently as administrator.  Can I set up a separate administrator sign in once I have set up all the programs I lost when installing Win7

    Hi,
You may try the following suggestions one by one to check the issue.
Suggestion 1: Temporarily disable antivirus program.
Suggestion 2: Click Start, All Programs, right click Internet Explorer and click Run as administrator.
Suggestion 3: Click Start, type inetcpl.cpl into Search box and press Enter. Switch to Security tab, uncheck “Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)” and click OK.
Suggestion 4: Click the Start Button, type "User account control" and press Enter. When the User account control settings box appears, move the slider to Never notify and click OK.

  • Quicktime Player: You don't have permission to save ...

I am using Quicktime Player to stitch together short .mp4 videos taken on an iPhone or head cam.   When I export the composition although it states it is saving the it, I end up with a message "You don't have permission to save the file "***.mp4v".
I have used Quicktime successfully to stitch together You Tube clips.
    Where am I going wrong?
    Thank you

I have the same issue - when I edited the clip in QuickTime Player.
I removed sections via Split, which seemed to cause the problem.
To solve this, just close the quicktime window. QT will ask if you want to save. Save.
Now re-open the file and do your export - should work fine.
    Well, it did for me.
It appears it's not too hot at exporting an unsaved clip that's been split?

Under Windows 7 you cannot save files to system folders such as C:\Program Files. One way to get around the restriction is to temporarily turn off UAC. Click Start, then Help, then look for help on UAC.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

  • You don't have permission to open this file.

I'm trying to add an Entity Data Model to a Project in Visual Studio 2013.
When I browse to the file to connect to it says
"You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the owner or administrator for permission."
When I go back to SQL Management Studio and check the Server Roles assigned to my user name, I'm listed as a sysadmin.
I clicked ALL the other server roles for good measure, but this does not help.
When I installed SQL Server 2012 I created another user on my computer to serve as the SQL Server Services Account for SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Database Engine.
I notice that this user shows up as the database owner for the database I'm trying to connect to, even though I was logged on using my user name when I created the database.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about Entity Data Model, but if you get an error about lack of permission for opening a file (what file?), SQL Server is probably not the right place to look for file permissions. SQL Server is about managing data in databases, not
files in the file system. For file-permission errors, you need to look in Windows. Or try starting Visual Studio with "Run as Administrator".

  • TM error, "You don't have permission to acces some files"

    Hi,
I recently formated my Imac uploading Tiger OS to Snow Leopard 10.6.6

    Why install Tiger?
You still haven't said exactly what you did, but it appears you now have different user accounts than the ones you backed-up, so they don't have access to the "other" user accounts' backups.
To restore your Time Machine backups, see #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

If not running Lion, please do this:
With the Finder active, press the following key combinations, in this order:
    Shift-Command-H
    Command-3
    Command-I
The Info window for your home folder will open. Click the lock icon to authenticate. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you should have read & write access. If not, make it so. Regardless of whether you made any changes, select "Apply to enclosed items" from the action (gear icon) menu.
    If running Lion, do this:
Boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities > Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A “Reset Password” window opens.

  • You don't have permission to save in this location: C:\_Work

We're using a HomeGroup.  I have a lot of experience networking with Windows.  I've never had trouble with Windows 7 and previous versions.  All of our computers use a local folder named "_Work".  The local users who share the
computer need access to the local folder.  With Windows 8, not even a local administrator can save directly to _Work.  I want to solve this for all local users who are members of the PowerUsers group.  The local administrator has ownership and
'Full Control'.  Why can't the local administrator use the folder?  Then, how do I grant access for PowerUsers to C:\_Work?
Beware of unmoderated moderators in the Expression Web forums.

It's a bug.  I found a work around which I'll describe in a moment in great detail because I continue to be a loyal Microsoft customer and I want someone at Microsoft to pay attention to this work around.
But first I want to complain about the fact that you can search these symptoms and find two years of agony with Windows 8 users and still Microsoft has not provided a solution,.... a solution which would be so simple to provide.  These frustration
points with Windows 8 have the appearance of a dictate from on-high to alienate Windows users and drive them to Macintosh.  Nevertheless, I remain a loyal user and will endure the jabs and ridicule of my friends who jumped ship.
I don't have a lot of experience with Windows 8.  This time I added HomeGroups to my experience.
    To answer your questions:
    > When did this issue occur ?
All seemed fine during the install of Windows 8, and even after I attached to this new PC with Windows 7, all seemed fine.  I was able to create folders and files, share them and access them locally and across the network.  I was able to save
a file across the network  It was some time after I set up HomeGroups that I noticed access problems.  Earlier I noticed Windows 8 complain whenever I adjusted permissions on my C:\_Work folder, but it didn't concern me so I didn't record file names
    or error messages.
    > Have you tried to copy a file into the folder directly to have a check ?
After HomeGroups was set up and before the work-around was discovered, I was only able to save a file to C:\_Work by first saving it to my desktop and then drag it to the folder and approve the UAC stuff.  The UAC stuff doesn't bother me except
for the fact it shouldn't happen in this circumstance.  I'll describe my trouble-shooting and work-around in a moment.
    > Have you tried to login with another administrator to have a check ?
Yes.  It didn't help.  I also temporarily enabled the built-in Administrator but that didn't help either.
    > If there is a antivirus software in it ,please turn off them temporarily to have a check .
Only the built-in Windows 8 Defender is installed.  I didn't disable it.
Here's what I tried, but it didn't help:
I tried removing the 'Read Only' attribute.  It comes back but it turns out that it doesn't matter.
I kept checking and rechecking that the Administrator had ownership and full control.  It didn't matter.
ISSUES:  These issues may have contributed to the problem:
I turned off inheritance.  The root of each folder had implicit security settings.
I turned on HomeGroups.  It was some time after I turned on HomeGroups that I noticed I had lost access to the folder.
TROUBLESHOOTING:  Here are the things I tried that didn't matter:
I logged on as my first administrator, my second administrator, the built-in administrator, and as a normal user.  I was not able to save a TXT file to C:\_Work.
I was not able to save a TXT file to the '\\PCname\Work' share either locally or as a user across the network on Windows 7.
I rebooted both the Windows 8 computer and Windows 7 computer after each major change, but without success.
BUG:  Here are important symptoms of this bug:
After I discovered a work-around, I noticed existing files continued to have problems.  For example, a change in permissions at the folder level caused error messages concerning existing TXT files.
WORK-AROUND:  Here is a solution that will work until Microsoft finally fixes this bug:
In Advanced Permissions, remove all groups.  None of my groups worked including the built-in Administrators and my newly created 'Power Users".
Add each user individually.  Assign permissions to each user, on each folder, on each computer, one user at a time.
To fix existing files, right click each file and open Advanced Permissions.  Turn off inheritance and Apply.  Then turn on inheritance and delete explicit permissions.

  • "you don't have permission to open this file" when trying to attach in firefox ONLY. Works in other browsers and windows permissions are wide open.

Only a problem in Firefox. Works in IE and Chrome. I went thru support ideas of checking windows permissions (wide open and the user is the owner), starting firefox in safe mode and uninstalled/reinstalled firefox. Same problem. Any file in My Documents gives the same error, so it is not file related. Any directory under My Documents works the same. I can move files to Desktop and then they attach fine.

As mentioned in the original post, the user IS the owner and the permissions are WIDE open for the user. I have also tried to disable the anti-virus - no luck. The problem is ONLY happening in Firefox. Chrome and IE work perfect. There is also no problem in Windows. The user can add/remove/edit files in the directory. Right now the solution seems to be to use Chrome. I'm not excited about that, but at this point, the only option.

  • When using Acrobat X Pro, error message "You don't have permission to save to this location"

Hi, first came across this problem here...
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/797819
But there was no solution offered except to disable some security settings. As this issue was in feb last year, i am wondering if Adobe has the solution as i recently encountered the same problem on Acrobat X Pro.
    Please advise.

I had this problem with Adobe Acrobat X on my Windows 7 system using IE9.  (Note that I did not receive this error in Firefox as others have also reported in other forum posts.)  I spoke with a guy in Adobe support who recommended this solution...
Click on Start, then "Printers & Devices".
Right click on the Adobe PDF printer icon and select "Printing Preferences".
If it's not displayed already click on the "Adobe PDF Settings" tab.
Uncheck the box that says, "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts".
Click "Apply", then "OK" and close all prior windows
    That's it!
Finally, when you install Acrobat it should also install an Adobe Add-On in Internet Explorer.  It adds a two buttons ("Convert" and "Select") to the IE toolbar area.  The Adobe tech recommended using the "Convert" button rather than just printing to a PDF as it "prints more accurately".  Note that selecting the drop down arrow you can choose other options like, "Convert Web Page and E-mail".
    I hope this helps others.
