You have attempted to login too often...

We recently got Wi-fi set up in our house, since then ichat will not work. I will log in and it shows that none of my friends are online, then after about 2 or 3 minutes Ichat will log out then log in rapidly on its own. Then I get a message that says. "You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. wait a few minutes before trying to login again." Then when I try to login again the same thing happens. can anyone help?

Hi,
It can be for a Number of reasons.
One speculation is that the AIM servers get busy with AIM and ICQ members and now BEBO all using the same port. (not to mention all the apps that can log into AIM and the AOL ISP Browser that can IM)
As iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login but uses port 5190 on UDP to Send Files, Pics in Chats & Direct Messaging and certain Buddy List updates Buddies coming and going) - some routers and modems that route do not seem to like this double use of port 5190 (it certainly effects Zyxels devices).
Sort of related, with Devices set up to Port Forward, a port can normally only be forwarded once (to one IP), so this seems, to some that specify Protocols as well, as doing it twice.
Apple have an Article that I don't have link for about Some Netgears needing to change this port.
More generally though port 443 is open in most routers and routing modems as it is under the threshold of 1024.
All ports below this are open.
It allows Web Browsers and Mail apps to use the ports they use without any set up.
Several routers can be linked together without any input and these apps will still work.
Port 443 is used by secure Web Sites such as Banks and the like and the Apple Discussions Login Page.
It is also used by mail apps to access some mail servers.
Therefore dropping the login port in iChat to this port is likely to find it is open in any router.
Pre Leopard the above also used to apply to the way the Mac Firewall worked as ports had to be specifically listed. This means if a ports is open for one app other apps can "Piggy Back" that usage.
In Leopard the App is "Certificated" and even if it allows a Port it will not be open for another app that is nt allowed to use the firewall.
Hope this helps.

Did it clear itself, or did people have to change servers?

  • IChat: "attempted to login too often in a short period of time"

I have seen the other threads on this and have tried to get the files out of the preferences, emptied the trash, deleted the iChat Agent Process...no luck. I have changed the port, nothing.
    Any other ideas?

    Hi,
    Try this.
Shut down the Mac. (If it has an Airport Card turn this off first)
Unplug the Ethernet Cable if using that method. (leave the modem connected to the Internet) (remove whichever end is easier to reach.)
Restart the Computer (With no Internet Connection)
Restart iChat (it will remark/protest it has no Internet connection)
Turn on Airport Card or Plug in Ethernet Cable.
Now Log In to AIM with iChat.
Try a Video chat with one of the Apple Test Accounts

  • IChat Error: "attempted to login too many times" problem/solution

*I don't know if its okay to post a new topic/question then answer it, but i was having this issue and finally found a resolution so i wanted to share it with everyone.*
_*Your problem:*_ You Log into ichat then it suddenly begins to act crazy- logging in and out multiple times for no apparent reason... then its gives you the message, yes THE message "You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again".
You silently think to yourself, "w.t.f". lol.
Okay, well different things worked for different people, it just depends on the time, the moment, and whether or not ichat wants to act right...
    SOLUTIONS:
    1. Change to SSL
Go to iChat Menu --> Preferences --> Accounts --> Server Settings --> then check "Use SSL"
    2. Use Port 443
    iChat--> Preferences--> Server Settings --> Use port "443"
    3. Delete the user from my ichat accounts, by pressing the minus sign. Then waiting a couple minutes just to make sure that I would not get the logged in too many times error and re added the account.
*4. THIS SHOULD MOST Definitely WORK:
1.) Quit iChat if it is already open, and then open Finder.
2.) Browse to your user folder (can be found by clicking on your main hard drive, then going to Users > Your Username.
3.) Open the Library folder and go to the Preferences directory.
4.) You’ll see a long list of files with a .plist extension. The one we’re looking for is com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist. When you find it, delete it by dragging the file to the trash.
5.) Launch iChat and this time you should be able to sign in to your AIM account successfully. iChat will automatically rebuild the preference file you deleted.
    _*More INFO:*_
Now some people may wonder "Why is this happening to me" I'll tell you why:
The cause of the issue most likely roots from using your Mac at multiple locations (such as home, school, or work), which could lead to the preference files somehow getting corrupted. It sounds serious, but really shouldn't take more than a minute or so to resolve. Just follow the above steps...
I wish I could take credit for all these, btu I just pulled them from different sites and forums, including forums.macrumers.com and macyourself.com
I hope this helps someone out there Good Luck.
Oh and feel free to add other ways to fix this weird issue.

  • Can't connect to AIM - Login too often in short period of time

Just recently my iChat AIM connection has been giving me this error message
    "Could not connect to AIM
You have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again."
The first message came up at 7.25pm. I waiting until 7.30pm. Same message.
I waited until 7.40pm. Same message
I quit iChat and tried again at 7.45pm. Same message.
    I've restarted twice. Same message.
I've "reset iChat" by moving the .plists for ichat. Same message.
What should i do? You'd think 10 minutes would be ok to try logging in again.

    Hi
    He might of done this.
Try this log on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190
Go to IChat > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • IChat Leopard "attempted to login too many times" message

I'm getting the "attempted to login too many times" message when I try to use AIM on ichat. I tried switching to 443, but no luck. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

You can wait until iChatAgent disappears for the Activity Monitor before deleting the .plists
I am not sure why it will not let you Force Quit or rather confirm a Force Quit.

  • Ichat pop up, you have attempted to log in too many times...

i just got my macbook and ichat worked great for one day.. now it's saying i attempted to log in to many times.. i have tried to change the port to 443, but it didn't work. i couldn't find an "apply" button so i just left it. did i forget something? if i didn't forget anything please tell me how i can fix it...

    Hi,
It is difficult to say if this is your end or the AIM servers.
Historically AIM have updated their Buddy list info by deleting those screen names they believe to be out of use and releasing them for use again.
This has always happened in Early December at about 4 other times a year.
We also have the Leopard release and the interest that has sparked in iChat.
Google have added the AIM protocols to GoogleTalk as well.
If it does not resolve in a day at the most delete com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist from your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and restart iChat.
You may need to reset the port to 443 but otherwise it will use the default info for Logging on.

(Doc ID 823395.1) has fix for this.
    1. Please stop the Application server.
    2. Clear the Tomcat cache (how you usually do that is delete all of the files and folders under the Catalina
    folder (ex...Collaborator\Tomcat\work\Catalina)
    3. Restart the server
    4. Retest the issue.
    Thank you Oracle.

  • Since upgrading to 21.0, if I have 2 windows open, too often the active window changes -- unasked. Why?

Hard to add details since I can't say exactly what action makes this happens. It seems like what happens is that I have clicked something in preparation to start typing -- in a forum post or a search bar or something -- and then find I'm not actually typing because the 2nd open window has suddenly become active. I'm hoping others have experienced this and will know what I'm talking about; up until now I've just gotten annoyed, switched windows, and plodded on. This did not happen before 21.0 was installed.

'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • Can you have a secure login page on a Creative Cloud free site?

Hi, wondering if you are able to have secure pages on the free Creative Cloud sites or do I have to upgrade and buy a web marketing site?
    Thanks

    Hi
The free sites you get with creative cloud are under : Web hosting plan, which is a basic plan. You will need to upgrade the site to higher plan, as secure zones are included in  webMarketing and webCommerce plans only. You may compare the plans based on features included in them here : Detailed plan breakdown  .

  • HOPE you won't hear THIS too often.....DUMB ME...Help

spilled about two tablespoons of spring water on the left end of my iMac stock keyboard. Now, it wants to fight with me, and its winning. The lower two lines of keys won't type anything....they just won't work. I have been given the advice to unplug it, stand it on the end that had the spill land on it, and let it sit for hours, then retry it. Maybe I didn't klutz the circuit.
In the meantime, (I live in a VERY small town, in a remote area) the local (ONLY) computer (pc) store had a Kensington usb wireless keyboard/mouse combo for mac-(I have the mouse I like working justr fine, thanks,) and a macally OS X thin keyboard. I opted for the macally, thinking that I would find something online at the apple store. Everything I saw there looks like it *****! I liked the wireless keyboard, until I read all of the reviews about loosing bluetooth conectivity. Shoud I learn to love the macally, or is there a GOOD, SOLID wireless usb keyboard that works well on Imacs, with OS X?
    Thanks in advance,
    F

as was suggested, and along the same thread, I continue to let the original KB dry out. I, in the meantime, bought that macally KB from my local guy, because the other option was to go without a computer (not really-I still have a great running Dell laptop) but in order to buy a new mac kb, I would have to drive 2.5 hours each way (5 hours) or order online, and wait 3-4 days for delivery. The laptop is primarily my travel kit, so there is a lot of email and other info on the mac I don't want to go without for days.
I understand your desire to help, and it is appreciated. Suggestions are cool. Questioning reasoning feels invasive. I'm new to Macs...(my second one....had an emac in about '87. Had my first PC in 82.
We'll get 'r done. Just some getting adjusted to do. And, no, although I own the program, I'm holding off running Disk Warrior! lol! Thanx

  • Error message - could not connect to aim - too many attempts to login

Today when I tried to iChat, I got a message I haven't seen before. The error message reads "You have attempted to lgin too often in a short period of time. Wait a few minutes before trying to login again." I did notice my window continuing to try and login -- not sure why it wouldn't. I did install a new router yesterday and my internet works fine. Would this have some impact on iChat? Or are there certain settings I might need to change?

    Hi,
If you are on 10.6.x did the port change stick ?
SSL tends to have to be On and the Enter key needs to be used to "Set" the port.
On the Netgear access the WNA set up page.
Turn Off the Port scan and DOS (Or SPI) and Disable the Ping Blocking.
    (Apply/Save Settings)

  • Can you have multiple bleed allowances (along with the multiple page sizes) in InDesign CS5?

    Hi there,
I'm new to InDesign and have a question about documents with mixed page sizes in CS5.  I'm preparing an illustrated book for print and was hoping to be able to contain all the pages (including the covers) in one document.  My basic setup is 140 mm x 210 mm with a 3 mm bleed on each side.  I've managed to add the different cover page (146 mm x 216 mm) and spine (10 mm) dimensions easily enough, but can you have multiple bleed specifications too?  The bleed allowance I need for the case layout is 15 mm.  I've scoured InDesign and the net, but can't find any information about this anywhere.  It would seem rather silly to be able to have multiple page sizes in your document without being able to change the bleed allowance too.  Here's hoping it's possible!  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Alexandria

make sure what your printer means ie: Page size + 6mm spine bulk + 15mm bleed.
