You have inserted a Blank DVD... But it isn't

I know, because my MacBook (1 of them, but not the other?), and my iMac reads them. It is Underground Pittsburgh (Video). It plays fine on my DVD player too. This eMac has a combo drive and is 6 years and 2 months old (June, 2002). It also has this message on other DVD's including my Tiger DVD!

Have you tried running a CD lens cleaner through the eMac's optical drive for a pass or three? After six yars of use, the lens in the drive may have accumulated a fair amount of grime.
That one MacBook can't read the DVD either suggests that problem could be with the DVD, not with either computer. Is this DVD a commercially pressed disc or a user-burned DVD-R (some small-scale commercial DVDs are also burned DVD±R discs too). It's possible for ±R discs to degrade and fail (even more so with ±RW discs), even if you store the disc carefully per the NIST's Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs. A boderline disc may work in some optical drives but not others.

  • "you have inserted a blank cd", but it ain't blank

Every time i put in a CD, DVD or anything in the CD driver.. it pop's up " you have inserted a blank CD ".. the case is now; that it isn't blank.. So I'm having problems with adding new applications, which i need for school.. Anything to do with it?
    In advance, thanks

I just last week purchased my MacBook Pro refurbished from Apple. I have a similar problem to this where for some but nowhere near all discs, it insists the disk is blank when it's not. It seems to only happen on burned discs, and mostly DVDs. It's only done it once with a CD.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

  • "you have inserted a blank DVD"...but it isn't blank!!

Tried a DVD a few weeks ago and after a while a message came up saying it had encountered an error and could not continue playing. When we tried the disk again we just got the "this is a blank DVD, what would you like me to do" message that comes up when you insert blank DVDs. We tried two other disks - one of them got the message, and one of them didn't and played fine.
It has happened a few times since - in the middle of playing it will encounter an "error" and just keep giving me the blank DVD message.
I tried a cleaning disk and that worked at first, but soon enough it was up to its old tricks again, and now it is even claiming that the cleaning disk is a blank DVD.
CDs have always played fine, even when it previously refused DVDS, but when I put one in to check just now, not all songs were listed and three or four were listed as being 15 hours long.
So is this a problem with the drive rather than with DVD player?
Does it sound dirty or just plain broken?
I've just been reading the "firmwear killed my superdrive" thread, and I did update firmwear around the time the trouble started, though I don't use the DVD player that often and can't remember if it was before or after. Could that have caused this? But if so, surely it would be broken all the time and not able to intermittently read disks?
    Help please!

Try repairing your permissions on your hard drive. Any time you do an update you should repair permissions. This link should help. Mac OS X: Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
You should also reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory). Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM?

  • Optical Drive indicate "You have inserted a blank DVD"

When loading software on my MAC the program froze during the analysis phase. I closed/ended the program and then re-loaded the disc and now it keep saying.. "You've added a blank disc, how would you like to proceed"...
I've checked the disc and everything is there... The disc loads on another computer but won't load onto the computer where I quit the program..
Suggestion on how to get around it / fix it?

    Hi Anthony,
You may end up having to purchase a new drive, but a few things you can at least try:
    Clean the drive
Hold the MBP upside down (no, I'm not joking)
    Repair permissions
    PRAM Reset
    SMC Reset

  • "You have inserted a blank CD..."

    Hi, first time poster here.
I've been reading here that some people have been having similar problems with CD's/DVD's, but mine is a little different.
Some CD's I've made of software USED to read and mount in my Superdrive, but now, some of them are detected by OS X as a "Blank CD" and then gives me the options of opening it in Finder, Disk Utility, ignoring it, eject it, etc. I know that the CD's are not blank and I have tested these CD's in other macs and they read and mount just fine.
Store bought music CD's and DVD's work but not these backup CD's of software.
    I'm using Maxell CD's.
I have a feeling it was because of an OS X update. Possibly 10.4.5
    Any suggestions?

bah! my imac is over a year and a half old. im sure i'll be paying a fortune to replace the drive now

  • "You've Inserted A Blank CD" message with no CD after installing Snow Leopa

Hi, since I've upgraded with my family pack CD (and still with the most current software update), everytime I start up my computer it says I have inserted a blank CD but nothing is there. I've cleaned out the drive.....and it burns ok. But it makes my computer run like it has a CD, using power and heating up.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
Insert a blank CD and boot up your Mac. When it boots to the Desktop, drag that CD icon to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • I need assistance in burning an imovie to a DVD.  I've done this before, but am having problems this go around.  When I get to the import section and insert the blank dvd it runs a few seconds and ejects it.  Any ideas?

I am struggling with getting the imovie I just created to burn onto a DVD.  I have done this before, I'm following the tutorial for imovie '09 and it isn't working after several attempts.  Any suggestions?  When I get to the import phase and insert the blank dvd it runs a few seconds and then spits it out.

I bought a 47LA6200 TV and a BP530 blue ray player. I have my cable box hooked up to HDMI 1, I have my blue ray hooked up to HDMI 2, and my XBox 360 to HDMI 3. I have my cable box hooked up to my older JVC RX880V stereo digital optical to digital optical without any 5.1 problems at all.
My TV digital optical out is hooked up to my stereo digital optical port 2 without any 5.1 problems either, sort of.
My BP530 is hooked up to my stereo digital coax to digital coax but I cannot get any 5.1 sound at all. Not through any of the digital channels on the stereo at all.
The player only comes through as standard stereo through all 4 speakers and I am not sure if it is coming through the base speaker at all.
I have tried every setting on both the TV and the blue ray player to no avail. I have even tried to not use the digital on my blue ray but when the stereo is set to play from my tv optical I still don't get 5.1 sound.
When I do not use the TV optical out but I do use the digital coax out from the DVD player I still cannot play my DVDs in 5.1. I have new HDMI 15gbps HDMI cables and a new digital coaxial cable so I don't think it is a cable thing.
The real question is how do I get to hear my blue ray and DVD discs in 5.1 sound? Will this work if I exchange my blue ray player for a Denon 3D blue ray or other player?

  • "You inserted a blank DVD"

Whenever I insert a DVD into my iMac (OS X 10.9.1), the iMac is unable to read the DVD.
Instead I get a message saying:
    "You inserted a blank DVD"
Note that the DVD is NOT blank !
It has data on it, and I can read it without problems on my Macbook or PC.
Could this be a hardware problem? (drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GA32N:, firmware: KE06)
I looked around in forums and saw that other people already faced this exact problem, but I never found a solution.
I hope someone can help !
    Thanks very much.
    Tal

    Tal,
First try some basic resets, start with doing both SMC and PRAM resets, do each 2-3 times back to back. Then retest, if the issue is still there then your DVD drive may need cleaning. Go to your local office supply store and ask for a CD/DVD cleaning kit and use it.

  • Message says blank DVD but its not

Hello...I have a mac pro running 10.5.8 and have successfully burned many DVDs thru iDVD...they play properly when I watch them on a DVD player thru my TV but when I put them in the computer it says that I've inserted a blank DVD...whats going on?

Rentals are a one-time only download - if you downloaded it on your iPad then from here :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • Drive keeps ejecting Blank DVDs but will read DVD with media in it

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

  • Itunes 8 Makes Vista lockup when inserting a blank DVD

After upgrading to iTunes 8.0 my PC will now freeze if I put in a blank DVD, the only way past this freeze is to hit the power button. I have burned blank DVDs in the past with no problem. After upgrading to iTunes 8 I can't even insert a blank DVD in my machine without it locking up
Does anyone have a fix? I cant uninstall iTunes since I don't have a backup of my music.

iTunes performance on Windows has always been lousy and seems to keep getting worse. I am uncertain if your conspiracy theories are well founded, though every time I load this piece of bloatware I have to admit the thought crosses my mind.
What I can't get over is how the new version seems to dominate my machine... demanding all its resources. When it's syncing or downloading content my CPU is at between 95 and 100% for the duration. I also love how when it is processing 'DRM Free' content from the iTunes plus store it maxes out your CPU and takes forever. What is it processing?! These are supposed to be unencumbered files -- but they sure encumber my PC when they are being processed.
I am certainly not about to buy a Mac; however, I do have a significant investment in Apple products and would like to see a resolution to this downward spiral in performance in the PC version of the iTunes application.
Is anybody listening? Your next release should have +no extra features+ and simply be a performance and stability release for your Windows customers who I would be surprised if they didn't eclipse Mac users in terms of numbers.

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?

  • Topic: "Please insert a blank DVD-R disk".  DVD burning prob

    Hey everyone out there,
My imac is a week old now and i'm starting to experience dvd burning problems. Here is the low down. Used 1-step dvd feature in idvd5 to burn a mini-dv tape from my sony dcr-hc42. It burned succesfully on the 1st 2 tries. On the 3rd try it says to "insert blank dvd-r disk" and spits out the blank dvd. I've read different posts that say to try using dvd -r disks - only suggestion I could find. I have been using dvd -r disks - in fact I've tried 3 different kinds (sony, TDK, memorex) all with the same result. I also got a suggestion to dl toast and test the burner with toast - Same result. It won't even read the blank dvd-r in the drive. Is my burner having problems or is this a problem with ilife 5. It's still new and under warranty so I'll give apple a call and post their directions here. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
Where would I be without this forums!!! (on my windows computer, bleh!) =)
    arn

    Hey Jordan,
I dl'd patchburn and it does the same thing as it did with idvd and toast. It says "please insert a blank dvd-r disk" then ejects the disk. D'oh!!! I just finished talking with apple tech support and here's the low down:
we tried reading the blank disk with finder. Wouldn't even show up on desktop. Then we popped in a movie dvd - read just fine. We went in to system preferences (cds/dvds) - everything a ok. Finally, popped in the mac os disk and did a new archive install - same result =( The tech told me to take it into an apple store which I will be doing soon. Their explanation was that since it was reading the data dvds fine, the problem was the head that detects blank dvds was malfunctioning ( i guess it has 2 heads - 1 to read the data and 1 to detect blank disks). Either way it's covered under warranty ( 1 week old) so hopefully they'll take care of it. I'll post more news once I get it back - crossing my fingers X .....
By the way, thanks for the replies. This forum system is awesome.

  • TS1538 Hi, I have the problem which iTunes cannot detect my iPhone 4s. I tried the steps you have provided in your troubleshooting, but it won't work for me because the Apple Mobile Devilce is perfectly installed on my windows.

Hi, I have the problem which iTunes cannot detect my iPhone 4s. I tried the steps you have provided in your troubleshooting, but it won't work for me because the Apple Mobile Devilce is perfectly installed on my windows. However, the driver "Microsoft teredo Tunneling adapter" has a yellow exclamation mark, which i believe means it's not installed correctly or something is wrong with it. This driver is under the Network Adapters (Please see picture below).
This is what happens when I connect my iPhone 4s to my laptop (Windows 7 Starter 32-bit)
    1. The phone charges it's battery
    2. I can open it in My Computer and import/export media files.
    In iTunes
    3. It start to sync until step 3 then stops.
    4. The iPhone option with an arrow appears beside the iTunes Store, but when the arrow is clicked it disappears.
I hope you can provide me a solution for this problem.
    Thanks,
    Ralph

    Hi ralphagir,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For your iTunes issue with it not recognizing your iPhone, I would go ahead and suggest deleting iTunes and all of its components from your Windows computer and installing fresh.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
As far as the arrow button that you click and the iPhone disappears, it sounds like you may be clicking on the eject button. Please take a look at the following article for information on the eject button in iTunes.
    Safely disconnect iPod

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.
