You have mail, (in Terminal)???

Not a big issue at all this, was just wondering.
I started Terminal today to remove a stuck file and was presented with this;
+Last login: Mon Sep 7 05:21:31 on console+
+You have mail.+
+joe-bloggss-mac-pro:~ joebloggs$+
As it happens I didn't have any mail. Any takers?

If you haven't already done so, type 'mail' into the prompt without the quote marks and read the message. Click here for information on using the command.

  • Terminal Message: "You have mail"??

I am getting this message " You Have Mail" when I open a shell in Terminal. It is after the "Welcome to Darwin!" and my computer name. Does anyone know what this means and how it got there?
    Thanks.

    Niel,
thanks a bunch, I have never made myself much familiar with Terminal use and know little of all of its capabilities. I guess it's the powerful master that overlooks his GUI users.
    Here's the message:
Mail version 8.1 6/6/93. Type ? for help.
    "/var/mail/username": 2 messages 2 new
    N 1 username@computername Wed Jan 18 15:30 19/980 "Cron <username@To"</div>
    N 2 username@computername Sun Apr 9 17:00 19/980 "Cron <username@To"
Sounds like cron was sending log info?
Anyway, thanks for solving this one for me.

  • "You have mail." notification in shell - how to get rid of it?

    Hey guys,
whenever I start a shell (zsh, but same for bash/csh/ksh) I get the message that "You have mail.". Well, that's true, there are mails in my /var/mail/`whoami`. But as they ain't new, I don't need, and more, don't want this message. How do I turn it off?
It's gone when I move my mail from /var/mail/$USER to somewhere else, but that is no solution.
    Ideas? Clues? ANYthing?

There's something strange in how Terminal.app invokes
    the shell that I haven't had time to trace down yet;
    I can see the following:
Terminal.app with default settings does not invoke
~/.bashrc but displays the "you have mail" message.
Terminal.app set to launch /bin/bash neither invokes
~/.bashrc nor displays the "you have mail" message.
xterm in X11 invokes ~/.bashrc and does not display
    "you have mail".
I always use xterms because they seem to have better
compatibility with more shell commands than
    Terminal.app.
The one thing I didn't try is to put the the
MAILCHECK=-1 in /etc/profile and then reboot.
Well, I use iTerm, but it's the same for Terminal.app
I also tried MAILCHECK='', MAILCHECK='-1' and all that... and if I check it, it's set, but still this **** message...
Geez, it can't be thaat hard, I thought!?

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

I'd suggest starting with the simplest of these fixes, so look them over first.

  • I deleted my Mail app sometime back. I reinstalled it again, today, on my Macbook Snow Leopard Mac OS but when I try launching Mail, it says ' You have Mail version 4.0(1075/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X version 10.6.8(Build 10K549)",

The Mail version for your machine is 4.6 (1085)   You can get it via the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Then follow with software updates to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.

How to install application Mail from Optional Installs on Mac OS X Install DVD?

Download and run the 10.6.8 combo updater from Apple. That should get your Mail app up to the latest version.

    I didn't put sysconfig-ng.conf in /etc. For default is sysconfig-ng.conf in /etc/sysconfig-ng

  • "YOU HAVE MAIL -- ALERT"

I use BT Yahoo email.  When new mail arrives there is no automatic flag to tell you something has arrived.  This means we have to check our mail frequently.  Does anyone know if this can be tweaked to give a "ding" or sumfink, when mail arrives?  Are there bolt-ons to do this or can BT Yahoo put more code in the sortware?

No, it can be the same. You have a choice of POP 3 or IMAP. Google it before you decide.

  • I downloaded the latest version of iTunes, and now my mail won't open. It displays this message now-You have Mail version 5.3 (1283/1278). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4 (Build 11E53). For more information, click the Help button. Strange.

    STRANGE, RIGHT?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
They are different problems because I doubt that iTunes has been able to modify Mail, that has nothing to do with iTunes.
As you are running 10.7.4, download and install OS X 10.7.5, the most recent Lion version > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1582 After installing the update, you should be able to run Mail

  • You have Mail version 4.0 (1075/1085). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button.

    How do i fix this?
i have uninstalled and reinstalled mail, i have done software updates and it still comes up, im so confused
    alex

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
By some reason, Mac OS X has kept a Mail version that it's not compatible with your Mac OS X version instead of updating Mail. First, I recommend a 10.6.8 reinstall > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
If this doesn't work, reinstall Mac OS X. Insert the Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD, hold the C key while your computer is starting and reinstall Mac OS X

  • Turn off "you have mail" sound when iPad2 is ASLEEP

My wife's iPad 2 beeps all night as emails come in through her exchange email account.  How do you stop this?  The iPad is ASLEEP, it shouldn't be making any kind of noise in my opinion, and so far it seems impossible to turn off!?  Very un- apple, what gives?
    Thanks
    Bob

My solution to this very annoying "feature" is to do the following:
    Go to settings
    -Mail,Contacts,Calendars
         -Fetch New Data
              -Advanced
                   -Exchange
                        -Set the schedule to "Manual"
I agree with you Michael, I do NOT want to be disturbed by an email notification at night.  I also do not want to hear a pause in my music when I get an e-mail.
Now I simply get my updates when I open my mail client.  If someone needs me right away, they should call.
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • Does anyone know how to make one email account alarm you when you have mail but not all of your accounts?

I have a specific email account that I would like to alert me when an email has come in but I don't want all my accounts to alram me.  Does anyone know how to do this?  I can only seem to find how to alert EVERY account.

There is no way to do that on a non-jailbroken iPhone.

  • Why no visual alert that you have new mail??

It would be nice if you could get a visual alert that you have new mail, just as you get for Voicemail and Texts.

I just spoke to a rep at Apple...they had me do a few things...first go into setting and then go to mail and then change fetch data from manually to 15 minutes, that did not work...what we did finally was to delete the mobile me account then take the airplane mode off for 20 seconds then put it back on then hit settings to general to reset to reset all settings...then we added the mobile me account back and it now notifies you when you have mail...I hope that helps....

    Hi ...
The Mail app is not available for downloading.
You need to reinstall the Mail app from your install discs.

  • HT2534 Can you have multiple ITunes accounts under a single e-mail address (i.e. separate accounts for my children and myself?)?

Can you have multiple ITunes accounts assigned to a single e-mail address?  i.e. different Apple ID's for my kids and myself, but all assigned to my e-mail address.

No. Each account must have uniquie email address.
