You know that thread, where someone asks what lens to buy next...

This is one of those threads.
Some of you are aware of my photography journey from my last few posts.
At this point, my wife's photography needs are satisfied with the new SL1 and 18-55mm STM lens. It is a massive improvement over the older XTi w/ 17-40 4L. This also involved adding new manual speedlites.
As a result of this, the next lens will be more for me than my wife's business needs.
Originally, the next lens was to be a 60mm macro, but I have been having good enough results for now using close-up diopter with the kit lens at 55mm.
My goals are:
- A lens that "replaces" the 18-55mm for me so that my wife can use that lens full time without me needing to borrow it so often.
- An inexpensive lens with a good zoom range to experiment with before buying more expensive primes or L.
Already have these other lenses:
- (as already mentioned) the 18-55mm STM lens that my wife uses with SL1
- the original 18-55mm that came with the original EOS Digital Rebel (sometimes shows errors on the Xti when taking shots rapidly)
- 17-40mm EF 4L
I will probably use the old XTi some of the time and borrow the SL1 when she isn't doing business, etc. At least until I break down and buy my own dedicated camera.
I was thinking of either
- 18-135mm STM (total replacement for all the kit lenses for me, no need to use the old 18-55 or ever borrow my wife's lens)
- 55-250mm STM (can use the 17-40 or my older 18-55 for wide angle)
I am leaning towards the 55-250mm for two reasons:
- I already have several lenses with wider angles to choose from when those situations arise.
- the 55-250mm is pretty cheap at $300ish
Thoughts?

If you can find a "real" camera store, you might want to try out a 55-250mm.
I had the non-STM version of that lens was never very happy with it.  The STM gets much better reviews and image-quality for the price is supposed to be very good (again... I have not personally tried the STM version.)
Avoid the 75-300mm USM -- that lens has the reputation for being one of the most marginal lenses (both in build quality and image quality) in the line-up.
The 70-300mm USM is MUCH MUCH better (but I think the retail price on that lens is closer to $650 -- so you'd expect it to be better, and it is.)
I will say that I gave away my 55-250 to a relative (again, not the STM version) for two reaons.  #1 I was not thrilled with the image quality and, #2 I found myself using the 55-250mm range FAR less often than I would have imagined.
Oddly, I own the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (the original -- I bought my copy new, but before Canon introduced the II generation of that lens.)  I use that lens quite often.  But I'm not using it to shoot subjects at a distance, I'm using it because it has a fantastic look.  I'll take a portrait that I could have taken with a shorter lens, but the image looks much better when I use the 70-200 f/2.8 (although I'm usually using it nearer to f/4) and stand farther away to get approximately the same frame.  The compression and quality of the out-of-focus background has a great look to it.  So I could use it as a sports lens (and a lot of people do), but I actually tend to use more like a portrait lens.

  • What lens to buy next

    Hey guys
    I have a 7D and two lenses, a fixed 50mm and a 18-135mm kit lens
Im wondering which is the best lens to get next fir everday photography,  like pictures of my kids playing, street photography, cars. General stuff

Not all 100mm lenses are macro lenses. But some are.
There is the EF 100mm f2 USM. There are also the EF 100/2.8 USM Macro, and the EF 100/2.8L IS USM Macro.
If you want to shoot macro, the EF 100/2.8 USM sells for around $500, but the tripod mounting ring and lens hood are sold separately and would make a final cost higher.
There is also the EF-S 60mm f2.8 USM Macro lens, which is around $400, if memory serves. It's more compact than the 100mm and can't be fitted with a tripod ring. It's lens hood is also sold separately.
If you are interested in shooting close-ups, you also could just get macro extension tubes to use with your 18-135mm. Canon sells individual 12mm and 25mm tubes. Or, the Kenko set of three tubes (12mm, 20mm & 36mm) sells for about $200 US. Adding extension behind your 18-135mm will allow it to focus much closer... the more extension, the closer it can focus and the higher the magnification. You also can use extension tubes on your 50mm lens.

Niel, thanks for your response.  I have been very wary of downloading Mavericks on this machine.  I don't feel it has the power to run it and I'm afraid it was slow it down terribly.  It was bought in late 2008.  It's fine for my purposes at this time…just holding on until I buy a new one.  I have the same problem others have with autofill not working, so I was trying to see if an update would help that situation.  Grace

Did you know that Verizonwireless is saving your checking account information when you pay your bill by check and then making it part of your "MyVerizon"  without you adding it? This means of course if they get hacked that information could be compromised. What do you think of this?

Credit card and debit card and checking and savings information is encrypted so it is possible to be hacked, but the odds are greater to get hit by the Love Boat then to have a wide scale hack.
Oh yes they do happen, Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Target and quite a few others. But in all the years I have paid my invoice with saved card information I never been hacked.
You use good passwords and the risk is minimal.

  • How do we know that which processing Class doing what functionality ?

    Hi SAP HR Experts .
Q:-1 How do we know that which processing Class doing what functionality ?
    Like : Processing class 1 , 2 ,... etc .
Similerly Simulation Class is On (Check Box is Ticked) then what impact we occur ?
    Kind Regards : rajneesh

    Hi Rajneesh,
The best way to understand the processing class is to go thru each and every class in table T512W_D ( Go to SM30 -> t512w_d ).Here in this table you will have the wagetypes ,just double click on the wagetypes and you will find the screen with processing classes. Just go thru each and every class by f1 . Each class is having its own importance and implication.
Same with Cumulation class. Go to SM30 -> enter T54C3. Follow the same logic here too, and try to analyse the max thru f1.
This is how we can understand the logic.

  • Did you know that the  carrier Verizon offer the merge conference call or internet while on call on the iphone? Only AT

Did you know that you can't use the merge function on a iPhone 4s with Verizon Wireless? They blocked the function only AT&T has it, also Verizon doesn't allow browsing the Internet while on a call like AT&T, huge mistake Verizon. For people that conference call, don't get tricked into changing carriers until Verizon changes this feature.

Not sure about the merging of calls, but being able to browse the internet while on a call can't be done with CDMA technology -- so it's not that Verizon doesn't allow it, it just can't be done on their network. This is old news ...

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.

  • So, you know that hidden window?

The one that you are using to block REAL "desktop" developers from usurping all of your scandalous money making schemes, with 8 and 10?
I am gonna SHATTER it and put all that work you spent trying to stifle end user and developer evolution to waste.
I allowed it to stay, on 8, cause 8 sucked so much ass and decided to let it be. But then you had to go and do all of this. Your tactics have changed, due to backlash from 8 But the resulting stifling of the world's progression so that you can turn a buck,
    has remained.
No need to reply, I wont be here. Have no interest in your response. Would be wise to begin thinking about being "about" end user and developer evolution, first and foremost, not your pocketbook. Cause this line that you currently are on is only
going to end up as a bust.

When I try to sync my iphone with itunes, it tells me a warning that I don't have enough memory and yet the status bar at the bottom says that I do and I know that I have enough memory. What's the problem? It happens with the ipods and ipad as well!!!

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version.  You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes.  Or you can adapt to the new look.

  • Do you know some sites where I can find some "accessible" courses?

    Hi all,
    I'm an italian blind programmer.
I would "jump" from 1.4.2 pre MVC web development to 1.6 MVC complaient web development.
Do you know where I could find some on-line certified courses?
The certification is optional but preffered...
    Thank you for your help!

Funny. A very similar thread was started [url http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=2242683&tstart=0]here.
Basically, Oracle has just jacked up the price of certification courses about fivefold by forcing you to take instructor-led classes before you do any certification exams now.
If you're already familiar with Java, you might want to look at the tutorials on the major changes since 1.4.2. • Did you know that the software purchased from the App Store could be an old version?

Today I purchased Adobe Photoshops Elements fro the App Store.  I never thought to check the version number, it never crossed my mind that could be the old version I was buying.  Apparently the latest version available on the App store is version 10 however the new version 11 was released back in Spetember apparently.  Once I had realised my error (as I would never have bought it if I was aware of this) I contacted Apple tech support.  To cut to the chase they believe that I was not mis-sold the software as the software states version 10 in the App Store.
    <Edited by Host>

Adobe must send the application to the App Store so Apple can put it in the App Store. If you want 11, purchase it in Adobe webpage or contact with Adobe and ask them if they're going to send the most recent version to Apple
