" You need to restart your computer, hold down...."
My daughters iBook G4 1.33MHz Power Pc running 10.4.11
She keeps getting the blackscreen message " You need to restart your computer, Hold down.....etc. " This has been done several times but returns about 10 minutes later. Keen to save the computer if possible, so I would be grateful for any advice.
Thank you
MikeMike:
Your daughter's computer is having what is called a kernel panic. This can be either hardware or software based, although, more often hardware than software. RAM is one of the most frequent offenders followed by the Airport Express card. If you have installed additional RAM, remove the module you installed and boot without it and see if the KP returns. You can do the same with the Airport card. There are other possibilities, but that's where I would begin. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Resolving Kernel Panics has more information and troubleshooting tips. After you have checked these out please do post back with further questions or comments.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer. I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro. I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory. My wife first noticed a problem with the display. Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable. The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer. The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what. Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic. The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget. It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc. I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop. He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other. I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out. Everything appered to be connected properly. Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue. So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire... I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable. I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive. I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button). The computer magically started up!!! I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3. I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive. After some time the computer froze. I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic. I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze. I managed to run Disk Utitlity. I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine. After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install. Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again. Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message. Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc. I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely. I set up the computer as a new computer. He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had. He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure. When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously. Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze. The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below. After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately. After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one. Now the computer will not boot via any method. It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down. I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times. I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference. I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out. I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer. I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer. If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else. Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
Thank you!

I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012. I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store. I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no. He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime. When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board. I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses." I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it. I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds. Again...thank you both! -

Why does the "You need to restart your computer" error appear when I open Vuze?
Hi there,
I apologise that this has probably been asked many times however none of the relevant threads I have come across solved my issue.
I have the most current version of Vuze and a Macbook Pro (Version 10.6.8 OS X).
After using Vuze for a year with zero issues, today I have had to restart my MBP several times due to this error message which is displayed in 5 different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."
This error only occurs when Vuze is open.
No idea why this is the case. Could it perhaps be a file I am downloading?
Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you for your time.Don't unplug the M-box while your MBP is on.

I just bought my Macbook Pro, the screen suddenly goes grey and there is a message in the middle in a black box that says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again.".
it happens every now and then! is there something wrong with my laptop?
I did the hardware test and there were no problems detected...can someone help?
Thanks, PriancaDid you really want title like that?
Or realize this isnt' even forum for MacBook Pros?

Hello,
I have recently been getting this same message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." whenever I start up my computer. It happens about 95% of the time. I have been reading on different forums that I should reset the PRam and the NVRam and I have been doing so and it does help as it does EVENTUALLY start up (sometimes takes me 5-10 min. to get it to start up).
I have also read that it may be the RAM that is loose, so I did check that and made sure that the ram is properly placed (which it is).
I don't know what else I can do. Should I reformat and reinstall Mac OS X?
Here is the exact error form the dump:
IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 64:87
AppleACPIPlatformExpert::start failed
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x55c095): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"Macbook 2,1\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.26/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
Debugger called: <panic>Well just got around to installing the new HDD and RAM yesterday, and I am sad to say... that the problem persists. :/
I reseated the memory and made sure they were in there properly, and I also installed the HDD and ran DiskUtility before I erased/reformatted and installed a fresh version of MacOSX Leopard, then updated to Snow Leopard.
As long as I am using my computer everything works fine, the problem occurs when the machine is shut off or put to sleep for a long period of time. Because when I shut it off and turn it right back on a few minutes later it works, or if I shut the lid and open it 10-20 min. later everything works fine, it's only when the machine is off or asleep for long periods of time.
So, I do not know what else can be wrong.
Should I try to take out the old RAM and just leave the new module in and see if that works out? See if that specific module is faulty? -
On startup: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down ..."
When I start up from system folder 10.4.3 on hard disk, I get this message:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Poweer button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
When I do this, my eMac restarts but returns to this very same message.
I did recently fix disk permissions using Hard Disk Utility. Tech Tools program reports no failures.
How can I restart my computer?Find some body that can download and and burn you a copy of techtool 3.0.4 contact micromat and see if they know of a way to roll back a repair. Diskwarrior might help. There again check for the version number compatibility. Utilities are not like they use to be on OS9 and below; here you could use a version designed for lower OS and get by using it.
Todays utilities are based on the operating system themselves. There was a Major change in the version of UNIX used in OS X.3 and X.4 previously they used BSD (Berkley Systems Development) originated my Berkley University. Apple had to pay a Royalty payment for each copy sold. OSX uses FreeBSD UNIX which originally started from BSD UNIX; but, was taken over by the General UNIX community under a License like Mozilla uses for FIreFox and others. Anyway it can be used Royalty free. What's better is FreeBSD is constantly being improved literally daiyly; and therefore is much improved.
I digress. because of these differences the utilities must be written for the differences in code. And what worked on one doesn't on the other. -
Can't get past a grey "you need to restart your computer screen"
Hello,
I have a few month old iMac 27" i7 quad core for music use and did an update this morning which consisted of an itunes update and update to the screen firmware and two other things I can't remember. Do the usual install and restart business and am now met with the following error:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x558271): "Unable to find device driver for this platform: \"ACPI". \n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12......................
Debugger called: <panic>
Backtrace (CPU 0) , Frame: Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
7 lines of numbers and letters (please let me know if you need these)
BSD process name correspoding to current thread: Unknown
Mac OS Version:
Not yet set
Kernal Version:
Darwin Kernel Version 10.3.0...............
System uptime in nanoseconds: 322691563
This is on the grey screen with the multi lingual "you need to restart your computer message"
Holding shift on startup bypasses the screen and allows me to eject the disk and boot in safe mode or whatever it's called but the bar down the bottom fills up and I'm just left with the rotating bars and the apple logo.
I have tried a few different suggestions I have found on other threads about holding a certain key to start in safe mode or something to that effect but nothing has worked.
I have inserted the OSX install dvd that came with the computer and restarted but that did nothing and now I cannot eject it.
I have backed up a lot of the stuff on there but it will be a huuuuuge inconvenience if I lose the data on this thing.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
StephenThis is called a "kernel panic" (the multi-lingual restart screen). Solving them can be tricky. From the sounds of it, you can probably rule out hardware, but you probably have pretty severe system damage, probably caused by bad hard drive damage. But without more information, it's hard to say. Try looking over [the X Lab FAQ on resolving kernel panics|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html].

Experiencing similar issues on both imac and power book: after replacing an original airport extreme with a new airport extreme both computers display a black box msgs that reads: "...turn off your computer by holding down the power button and or the reset button for a few seconds and then restart your computer."...
one of the printers are usb'd to the imac. The printer is not "seeing" the imac nor will it print wireless from the powerbook which was the norm prior to the upgrade on the airport extreme.
Upon restart, the imac does not "see" the wireless keyboard or the mouse until it is "found" again.
At this time the imac or the powerbook can get on line.It sounds like your computer is getting Kernel Panics. Please look at About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages and if the message seen on your display is like the one in the link then you have confirmed you had a KP. KP's can be tough to track down because they can be caused by software or hardware. The first place to start is to post the complete crash log so we can look at it, often there are clues in the log. You can find it at:

Netboot - You need to restart your computer error
Hi,
My netboot service was working fine a few days ago but is no longer working from our 10.5.4 server. When a client boots up, the big globe comes up, then the smaller globe, but then it goes to a window that says:
You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the restart button.
We recently did an IP changeover moving to a 172.16 range from a 192.168.
We also moved the Netboot images from our OS partition to a Data partition so we wouldn't run out of space.
Here is a snippet of the log as it shows on the server.
