You need to take this account online in order to download it.

For the best part of a year now, all the mail in my SENT box displays the following message:
The message from David Watson <[email protected]> concerning “<Unknown subject>” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
As far as Im aware, the account is online. So I can never recall any sent mail. A little irritating but not enough to have bothered me!
Yesterday, the mail in my INBOX started displaying the same message. To view my mail I have to quit the application and restart it. I have to do this every time I want to open another email. VERY IRRITATING! I have another email account set up on my other G5 (with all the same settings etc) and I never have any problems with that.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

OPEN LETTER TO THE MAIL 2.0 CODING TEAM. RSVP.
with thanks to DAVID GIMENO GOST, for answering so many people's posts about all the mail 2.0 bugs.
hi guys,
i love all things apple, and i have done for twenty years.
but with respect, your build of mail 2.0 really could be a lot better.
moving my mail from 1.0 on an ibook g3 running os X 10.3.9, over to mail 2.0 on an intel macbook 1.83 running os X 10.4.7 has been a nightmare.
the discussion boards of many mac sites feature countless cases of people making the move from 1.0 to 2.0, with all their e-mails disappearing.
having spent two weeks reading the knowledge forums, and learning about emailchemy, plus all the complications which, even with that third party program, still exist in moving one's mail over from version 1.0 over to 2.0, are both massive and horrendous.
and that's for me, who has twenty years of finding my way around mac bugs.
but this one is the most difficult i've ever seen, as well as being one of the most widespread problems in a FULL VERSION RELEASE of an apple program, which apple has done nothing to resolve during the six months in which this problem has been widespread in the mac community worldwide.
so thank god for DAVID GIMENO GOST !
i'm amazed that apple still hasn't come up with a patch for moving mail from 1.0 to 2.0.
even now, while i've finally got all my mail back today, 95% is showing as unread, due to the last obstacles in the process, which i can no longer face solving.
i've also lost hundreds of red mail flags during the transfer :o(.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, guys:
we shouldn't need to be buying third party software to move our e-mails from apple mail 1.0 up to apple mail 2.0, and even then be faced by massive hurdles to overcome, which take weeks for someone who at least has SOME idea of what he's doing.
i pity all the people who read the numerous forum posts about how difficult it is to transfer their mail from 1.0 to 2.0, and simply give up on the spot, and have to start their e-mail history TODAY, unable to access their previous e-mail again - potentially now for ever.
because the ironic joke is that we can't even have an access copy of mail 1.0 on our macs to read our old e-mails, unless we hack that program out of the 10.3 cd installation set, which the gurus on your own web site recommend us NOT to do !
so what are we supposed to do, to access our old e-mail, which we can't open, even though YES, it is in our mail folder, and YES, we did full rebuilds of every mail folder, and YES, we trashed our mail preferences first.
e-mail is now at the very center of the average mac user's digital life.
a user's most important program should not require countless hours scrolling through the astonishing number of problems within mail 2.0, which the apple.com discussion boards evidence, with new problems being added every day.
please sort this out, and build a patch, for the sanity of the many people who love apple, but who are unable to access any of their old e-mails.
because i wouldn't wish the last fortnight on anyone else.
RSVP, APPLE.
with best wishes to everyone on the infinity loop,
michael thorne

ps: if you're a mac user who has been affected by the mail 2.0 disappearing bug, please post a reply to this message, and send me an e-mail to: [email protected], so that we can draw apple's increasing attention to it. thanks.

    hello!
I am receiving this message: "The message from <sender> concerning <subject> has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I saw the resolution to it elsewhere and am hoping someone can help me with the script to recover the missing emails? Here are the contents of my
    INBOX.mbox: 34.8 MB
    Info.plist: 4KB
    mbox: 23 MB
    mbox.SKindex: 11.6 MB
    mbox.SKindex.isValid: Zero KB
    tableofcontents: 76 KB
    Thank you so much!

Assuming this INBOX.mbox has been moved from within the account named folder to the Desktop (if not, do so with the Mail.app quit).
Copy the INBOX.mbox and place the copy in another location of your choosing such as your Documents folder for backup purposes.
Repeat Show Package Contents for the original INBOX.mbox on the Desktop and delete all package content files except for the mbox file at 23MB in size and the mbox.SKindex file at 11.6MB in size and empty the Trash.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes. Move the INBOX.mbox from the Desktop to/within the Mailboxes folder.
Launch Mail and this transferred mailbox should be in the mailboxes drawer along with any user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes or imported mailboxes.
Select this transferred mailbox in the mailboxes drawer and the Mail.app will take additional time to re-index the mailbox and replace the deleted package content files.
If successful and when completed, all messages in the message list for this mailbox will appear as unread. To mark all messages as read, select a message in the message list and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Select All. At the menu bar, go to Message > Mark and select As Read.
Use the Rebuild Mailbox function on this mailbox for good measure.
If this resolves the problem and there are no missing messages, you can delete the backup copy of the INBOX.mbox place in your Documents folder.

  • Message "not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online

After upgrading to 10.4.9, when I click on any of the old emails in my inbox I get the message "this message not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I can still read all email in any other mailbox.
I can read all email received after upgrading.
    I appreciate any help.
    G4 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1 gb ram

You upgraded to 10.4.9 from what?
If you upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier, the problem is that the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • How do I take this account online in order to download it?

I move all my old mail out of my inbox and into filing mailboxes as they accumulate. All of a sudden I'm getting the following message for all mail from April 1st to June 30th:
The message from Linsey Pekelsma <[email protected]> concerning “Plans and specs” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
    How do I do that?

    How do I do that?
You don't. This is one of the many bogus error messages in Mail that have absolutely nothing to do with what the problem really is.
What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
You get this error for messages remaining in Inbox of for the messages moved to custom mailboxes? If the latter, any chances that those mailboxes may contain too many messages?
Take a look at the following article, but don't do what it says, just post back with your observations:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty

  • You need to take this account online to download messages

    Hi,
I've tried to search for the ~/library/mail folder but search says no items. I'm mac osx10.3.9 mail vs. 1.3.11
    help
    thank you

Is this error message provided when selecting messages in the account's Inbox mailbox or Sent mailbox?

  • Missing Mail in POP account/ "Take account online in order to download it"?

    Mail build 1.3.11 (OSX.3.9)
User has an issue with mail showing the following error (see snip below) message in a POP account. Actually, if this were IMAP it would make sense, but I've not yet seen this on a POP configuration in this applciation. After running the rebuild on the Inbox, these emails are now gone. Is there any way to retrieve these emails?
    [snip]
The message from someone <[email protected]> concerning “Re:
paper” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this
account online in order to download it.
    [end-o-snip]
Many thanks for any insight provided.

This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has some corruption or is approaching or over the recommended size limit which is 1GB for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
If for the account's Inbox mailbox, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new (and empty) INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new received messages while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each here.
This information is required before determining the next step to take to recover the existing messages.

  • Account online in order to download???

I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

  • "Take this account on-line"

Hello All. Anyone have this error message before and can tell me how to "take this account on-line" to correct it?
I changed the address by a single character than changed it back... long story... now the 100 or so emails I have are still in the account, and still on the mail server, but Mail does not display the message body only gives me this message. How do I take the account on-line?
I have taken it off-line, closed the app, restarted and tried again, but none of the mail body displays - only this account error message.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, try this...
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
    Move to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
You can always move them back if it doesn't help.
