You've tried it... is it worth upgrading from 08 to 09?

Is there enough to justify it?

If you are editing and exporting HD then I would definitely NOT upgrade just yet. There is a huge bug while exporting HD video at the moment.
There is a thread on this issue:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1884912&tstart=15
That has over 2200 views, and 113 posts.
I've used it and there are some really cool features in iMovie '09. As soon as they fix the exporting issue I will definitely use it more. But for now, since I edit mostly HD footage, it has almost no use for me.
I just hope Apple hurries up and fixes the issue...

is mountain lion worth upgrading from lion

That is a question you really have to answer...go to http://www.apple.com/osx and check the features in ML...are they features that are important to YOU?  Do you want to text message from your computer?  Use the other features that are an integral part of iOS/  For me the huge factor is the added speed of ML...Safari for me is significantly faster...the whole system is faster.  I really like ML...but there are others on here who disagree.
Go through the features and see how important they are to you then decide.

  • Worth upgrading from 7?

I was looking to upgrade to logic 8 and i was confused about the prices. The first thing I noticed was that logic 8 is 100 bucks cheaper than 7, and the second was that it was also 100 dollars to upgrade from 7. I just bought 7 a few months ago and i realized i would be spending 400 dollars to get a 200 dollar program that is cheaper then the one I have now. I guess my main question is is it worth the upgrade? Is it better than 7 enough to spend 400 dollars?

Well, the first thing you have to do is realize that you've already spent $300.00 and that's done. The folks who bought Logic Pro 7 a few months before 8 was released actually had it much worse because in their case the amount lost was more like $700.00. The real question you should be asking is whether or not the upgrade is worth $100.00 because what you've already spent is spent. So, that said, is Express 8 worth the $100.00? Yes, especially if you've only had express 7 for a few months. The reason that's important is that Express 8 will change the way you work because the layout is so much better. If you're not too used to 7 that transition will take less time. Logic Express 8 is much closer operationally to Pro 8 than Express 7 was to Pro 7. But if you can afford it go for Logic Pro Studio. It will only cost you $299.00 to get the big program where as upgrading from Express 7 to Pro 7 a few months back would have cost you $700.00!

  • Worth upgrading from Elite to Elite Plus?

I am about $195 shy of hitting the Elite plus level. Not sure if it is worth my while to spend another $200 to hit the Elite+ level or just stay put at Elite.
I am pretty sure I won't be making as many big purchases as I did this year in the following year and also I shop online a lot from other stores as well....I am not seeing any major benefits of having Elite+ account at this point.
Could anyone share their experience here if they were in the same boat...if Elite+ was totally worth it or not...Thanks!

    Hello dawizard!
Congratulations on your Elite status and almost making it to Elite Plus! It is disheartening to hear that you may not feel becoming a My Best Buy™ Elite Plus customer is worth the remaining $195 it would take to get you there.
With Elite Plus, you would receive a 25% point bonus (an additional 15% on top of the 10% you receive as an Elite customer) as well as an extended return and exchange period of 45 days, whereas an Elite member receives 30. Furthermore, while you currently qualify for free standard shipping regardless of the order total, you would receive free expedited shipping.
I hope that you feel these benefits' value is worth spending the remaining amount. If you should have any questions, please let me know!

  • You'vetried it.. is it worth upgrading form 08 to 09 ?

The main things I felt were very weak in 08:
    - very limited resolution when exporting
    - very limited audio functionality (really have to export to GarageBand for any audio support)

Well there are improvements here too. You can now create a playlist for a slideshow in iPhoto, there’s no need to do that in iTunes anymore. The slideshow feature is just that, a slideshow. I don’t see Apple adding sound editing features to iPhoto, it’s just not what the app is about. Look at it this way, they have had 9 iterations of the app and haven’t added layer based editing or the ability to ruin a photo by adding text on top of it. Why? Because iPhoto is firmly focussed on post processing pics from a camera. Want to add content? Then use another app.
You sound to me like someone who’s reached the limit of iPhoto and might want to consider other possibilities. IF you’re serious about making movies from your shots then other apps are, frankly, better at this. Imovie is worth looking at. PhotoToMovie is an excellent app for the price. If you’re seriously cutting against music, crossfading tracks and so on, then you need a more powerful application - check out Final Cut Express. Up to 99 video and audio tracks at a time! Effects and so on.
But I would not be holding my breath waiting for Apple to add sound editing to iPhoto.

  • Is it worth upgrading from Logic Express 8?

Seems to do everything I need. I already own all the jam packs. What are the "must have" things that I will get for dropping $200? If it is worth it, I'll upgrade. Most of my recording is MIDI, some acoustic and electric guitars and vocals. I also would like to create sheet music.
    Thanks

Well, if you're serious about wanting to achieve something, then an upgrade to Logic 9 from Express 8 will definitely be a good thing.
I originally got into Logic using Express at version 7/8, but there really are a good set of features that have been introduced in 9 that are genuinely useful to most people.
Features are only 'must have' if you think you need them for a specific purpose - the improvements are pretty basic, but enable you to work better - bouncing in place, creating a new sampler instrument from an audio region, for example, are great ways of doing what I want in a pretty more efficient way than I used to.

  • Worth upgrading from 10.2.8, no DVD

Help - I've looked through the forums and see that the upgrade to the current OS system is worthwhile.
I tend to use the mac for some web-browsing and word-processing - so not exactly a "power" user!
However I have no DVD player. (I do have a 640 MB memory, 700 Mhz G4 processor).. system profiler is crashing again so I can't look at the rest of the spec.
Is there anywhere that I can get a cheap DVD player to do the job? And given the way I use the PC is it worth spending £100+ on the upgrade?
    Thanks!

    Hi Julie;
I will take your question from the other direction as to why you should upgrade your system even though you are not a power user. Having run with 10.2 and then upgrading to 10.3 and now 10.4, I have been able to see noticable performance improvements with each upgrade. I also find that Spotlight, the search program for 10.4 is a vast improvement over the search capabilities of 10.2. I also find the widgets of Dashboard to be helpful. Then there is the security fixes that the newer versions have over 10.2. All in all, there are quite a number of things that will help you with a newer version of OS X then the one you are currently running.

  • Is it worth upgrading from Tiger to Leopard?

I have a G4 imac that I've been running on Tiger quite happily. A friend of mine has given me his old copy of Leopard (lucky bloke has just bought a new 27inch imac!). My questions are:
    1. Is it worth me changing considering there seem to be issues when installing the CD?
    2. Tiger was the last OS for a power pc based mac. Does the fact that Leopard was designed to run on both power pc and Intel OS make it less stable?
    Cheers
    Steve

I think it is a close call. It depends on your use of the iMac. I recently upgraded my 1 GHz G4 PowerBook (1.25 GB RAM) from Tiger to Leopard and it runs much hotter than it did in Tiger. The fan kicks in more often.
The only compelling feature in Leopard (for me and this PowerBook) is *Time Machine*. The other new features seem to need more horsepower than this old G4 can manage. If all the software you run works fine in 10.4, there is no real need to upgrade.
On the other hand, there is lots of cool software that requires 10.5. And, Apple have dropped security updates for Tiger, so there are risks in going online! But, if your Internet connection is through an ADSL/Cable router, this acts as a firewall, so the risks are miniscule.
Try it out and see. The best solution is to first clone your Tiger hard disk, using something like *Carbon Copy Cloner*. That way you can install Leopard and try it out, but still have an easy way to go back to your Tiger installation.
Once you have installed Leopard, you can migrate your applications and settings from the clone of your Tiger hard disk, using the *Apple Migration Assistant*, found in Leopard's Utilities folder.
    Hope that helps
    Mike

  • Worth upgrading from cone AE to newest model?

Currently running a home network with the old conical Airport Extreme, connecting many different devices (Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, PS3, iPhone etc.). Have a really fast cable modem.
I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the current Airport Extreme. Will I see speed or connectivity improvements? (Occasionally, I see my connection on the laptop stall out while still working fine on other computers.)

In practice, at home with multiple devices, would the jump in bandwidth from 54Mbps to 300+Mbps be noticeable?
For wireless clients that support these bandwidths ... yes, especially if you are streaming HD video between clients on the local network.
(I'm wondering if the innards, for example, are faster when it comes to switching, assigning IPs, whatever...)
For switching, the latest Extremes have Gigabit Ethernet ports, both on the WAN & LAN side, compared to the Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) ports on the 802.11g model.
I can't address if Apple made any improvements in the built-in DHCP server to offer any conclusions on, whether or not, it can assign IPs faster than the previous model.
To me the bottom line is the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

  • Is it worth upgrading from osx 10.6 to 10.7?

If you want to sample the waters, AND you have enough RAM, you can sample the waters by installing a virtual machine utility such as VMware Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox and install Lion or Mountain Lion in a VM where you can play with it until you are ready to switch, or you end up buying a new Mac and get the new OS that way.
And if you go for Lion or Mountain Lion, you can still support PowerPC applications by installing Snow Leopard into Parallels:

Download 14 day trial of Parallels 8 here:

NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • Worth upgrading from 320MB to 640MB?

I currently have 320MB of RAM on my G3 500 Dual USB, 128MB on-board+256 in slot.
I've been finding that I'm getting the spinning wheel quite frequently now, and sometimes videos won't play at all.
My question is, will it be worth my spending about $70 to get a new 512MB RAM in the slot? How much performance increase will I see? I use my computer primarily for web browsing using Firefox, and watching movies in flv or avi format.
On a related note, where can I get this RAM on the cheap outside of the US? I know that most of this stuff is made in Taiwan, which is much much closer to where I live. It'll cost me $25 to have the RAM mailed from the US so I'd rather get it from Taiwan if possible, but I've not been able to find any online stores from there.

You have to do a little bit of your own evaluation on this. If you plan on keeping the iBook for over a year longer, I would think that the upgrade would be worth it. It would be to me.
With that 80 GB hard drive and Tiger, you would likely see quite an improvement, although streaming video with a 500 MHz G3 processor can be problematic, no matter what you do. Downloading the video and watching it locally can produce better results. For YouTube, others have recommended using the mobile version of YouTube made for cell phones.
Good luck. Please let us know how things go.

  • Is it worth upgrading from a 15 " 2.4 Ghz MBP to a new 17" MBP?

So I've had my 15" MBP 2.4 GHZ, 250 GB model for over a year now.... I've used up about 200 GB so far, and it's been really buggy lately... Programs will take a long time to launch, and the machine seems glitchy. It takes a long time to boot up too... So I'm not sure if getting a new MBP would be worth the $$....
    What do you guys think?

You can always upgrade the internal HD, if you don't want to do it you would need to take it in to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), NOT an Apple store as they won't do it. It is a pretty easy process though that users do regularly and I believe OWC even has video's showing how to do it.
If you want to go the external then you can get a much larger drive, the three most popular brands on this forum are OWC, LaCie , and G-Tech. All are similar in specifications and performance and all provide very good build quality.

  • Is it worth upgrading from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Home Premium for a netbook?

I have an NB505-N508BN, with 2GB (upgraded) memory. Runs great as is. Are there any real advantages to upgrading to Win 7 HP for this particular netbook? I know the features that Win 7 HP has (I have it on my home PC). What I want to know is if upgrading it on this little netbook will have any negative impact (take up too much RAM, for example, and slow things a bit) because of the limited RAM (2GB). Thanks.

It means only that you cannot extend the desktop across multiple monitors. That is, you cannot move a window from one monitor to another.
       Move windows between multiple monitors
I see no difficulty using an external monitor to see that same thing.

  • Is it worth upgrading from IOS 6.1.3 to IOS 7.1 ?

I recently upgraded my iPhone 4S from IOS 5 to IOS 6.1.3. While everything else seems okay, the battery life has decreased significantly. Infact I can clearly feel the battery drains at double the speed compared to how it was with IOS 5. On the internet some people have suggested it to be an issue with the 6.1.3 OS. Only for this reason I am thinking of upgrading to the IOS 7.1.1. Otherwise I like the look and feel of the IOS 6 a lot. My question is:
    1. Will the battery drainage issue be solved after moving to IOS 7.1.1 ?
    2. Will there be any performance degradation of the iPhone after installing IOS 7.1.1 ?
    Kindly help.

It seems from the user reviews that no one is happy after they have upgraded to IOS 7 versions from 6.1.3 on Iphone 4S.
What user reviews?  If speaking of the posts in these user to user technical support forums, they are NOT reviews.  These forums are like an emergency room, people generally come here only when they have problems.  No intelligent human beign would base their decision to update or not on the postings here.
There are millions of iPhone users that have updated their iPhone4 and newere devices without issues.
