"your appletv is not authorized to play this content"
i have a fix! my desktop (and my wife's) were hardwired over ethernet through a switch, and my appletv was on wireless from a basestation. my downloaded tv shows would play on my desktop but would not play on the appletv. also, i could sync my appletv only via the ethernet cable, and my appletv could contact the applestore only over wireless. appletv support had no idea how to fix this...but apple base station support did!
moving my desktop internet connection from a switch (hub) to my airport solved the problem. apparently the airport and the computer hosting itunes must be on the same switch.
my apologies for starting a new thread on this topic, but the old thread is locked and archived.
From the sounds of things you had your devices (computer/AppleTV) on separate local networks and they could not see each other.

I bought movie on iTunes and when I try watch on AppleTV it displays "Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content" What gives?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Have you tried de/re-authorising your Computer. -
Receiving Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content when trying to Air PLay from IPAD 2 to the apple TV. This only applied to renting a movie.
I get the same error on some video content (specifically from the iTunes Library on my Mac). Netflix is fine. Movie previews are fine. I didn't rent/buy anything since this issue came up. I reset the AppleTV (20 minutes of re-entering everything). I am going to try another HDMI cable but the error does not say HDCP as shown in other google searches regarding this issue ( http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/05/hdcp-may-spoil-your-apple-tv-fun/ ).
Was able to play movies rented from the Mac a few weeks ago
Have not tried to re-authorize
AppleTV does not show under devices in iTunes - but I don't ever remember seeing it before
AirPlay'd movie from iPad1 - sound came thru no video (luckily I had a iPad to HDMI cable that was in my work case that worked otherwise movie night with the family would have been tragic)
I'm interested to learn how to fix this without having to waste 30 minutes fooling with three devices, four different wire configs, and a few swear words all while people sit on the couch and laugh at my earlier pronouncements of Apple being the best. -
I just rented 2 movies on my Apple TV and now I am getting the message, "Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content". Now I have 2 Apple TV's and they both are saying the same thing. Yes, I have done reset, restore, etc. but nothing! Frustrated & out $10.

Your apple tv is not authorized to play this content
I keep getting this error whenever I try to watch the movie I've rented on my Apple TV (1st gen).
"your apple tv is not authorized to play this content"
This is a rental directly on the ATV, no computer transfer involved.
So far I've rebooted the ATV, reset the ATV, rebooted my router (airport extreme) and my cable modem (Virgin media), removed and re-added my iTunes account on the ATV, checked the location is correct (UK), check all the ports are open and triple checked the internet connection (movie download and youtube work fine) and still no joy.
I've watched many many movies before without any troubles, 'til now that is.
I've not changed anything on my network or ATV since the last movie I watched sucessfully.
I'm running software version 3.0.2 on the ATV.
Anyone have any ideas what else I could try to fix this?
Cheers
NeilI just got the same thing. ATV2 was working fine last week. Now I can rent movies but now I can't play them. Instead I get this ridiculous message YOUR APPLE TV IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY THIS CONTENT.
Have reset everything. Nothing works.
I bet the iTunes system is in the process of being upgraded to make ready for iPhone 4s and ios5 next week and the upgrades are screwing up Rentals.
I'll file for a credit for the unviewable movie. This is ridiculous. Just ridiculous. -
I'm receiving an error message on my Apple TV. I downloaded a movie to my MAC, the Mac and the Apple TV were in sync. My Apple TV shows that the movie is "unwatched" in my movie selection area. When I try to play the movie I am receiving the message "YOUR APPLE TV IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY THIS CONTENT". Has anyone else every had this issue or know how to resolve the problem?

If it's the Apple TV 1 you have: This problem seems to have started around October 28, it appears to affect content purchased only on other devices but played on the Apple TV 1.
There have been other workarounds suggested from time to time, but I have found the simplest solution is to purchase something on the Apple TV 1 directly (There may be free content in some locations and this appears to work just as well).
Once the content has been purchased, it will not only play as normal, but will also allow all other content purchased on other devices after October 28 to play as well.
Some have reported that it's necessary to restart the Apple TV before and/or after purchase, but I found it worked without. -
I rented a movie on my iTunes account on my computer. It takes forever (3 hours to download) so then I transferred it to my Apple TV (1st gen). Now when I ask the Apple TV box to play it, I get the message, "Your apple TV is not authorized to play this content.". This is a movie for children (american girl, kit kitterage movie) and I have followed this proceedure before with success with other movies.
Same network and apple id associated with the atv?

Song is paid for yet message reads "your computer is not authorized to play this song"
song is paid for yet message reads "your computer is not authorized to play this song"
Hi bboywerx,
For that message you would want to try authorizing your computer again:
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
To authorize a computer using your Apple ID
Open iTunes
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.
Cheers!

Apple TV gen 1 says Not authorized to play this content...
My apple tv gen1 has synced all my tv shows and movies, and I am unable to view the shows as it says that it is not authorized to play this content. I have tried:
reset my router
de authorized and re- authorized my computer
signed in again (although half the time it continually says that my username or password is incorrect)
I have reset my apple tv both soft and back to factory settings
I have installed version 10.4.1 of itunes on my computer
I can play all the content on my ipad, iphone and computer just not on the apple tv!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel. -
I purchased a movie on iTunes, but it will not play on my Apple TV1. It says the Apple TV is not authorized to play this content.
Annoying isn't it.
This seems to have started at the end of October and may be some kind of 'authorisation expiry' on the original unit that needs updating.
Solution include:
Purchase something on the AppleTV1 itself with DRM (a free TV Show episode might be an idea if yiou can find one).
Remove the connection to itunes by removing the iTunes library from AppleTV's Computers>Settings menu, then add it back again.
Remember this will wipe synced content from the AppleTV if AppleTV1 is syncing (My Movies/TV Shows etc) as opposed to streaming (My Shared Movies etc) from that itunes library. In theory direct purchases on AppleTV that have never transferred to itunes might survive the 'wipe for a clean slate for a new sync' process that happens when you remove a sync library but don't risk it and right click on the AppleTV Device in itunes, choose Transfer Purchases if there are any prior to resetting the AppleTV Computers entry and readding the library. If AppleTV is streaming only it's very quick to remove the libarry and re-add it as there's nothing to sync when you re-establish the connection - it works I've done it. Purchasing a protected music video on my other AppleTV1 which was synced also worked.
Good luck

Apple tv not authorized to play this content. From ipad2. Bought movie from iTunes on iPad and it will not play on apple tv. Please help.
Hi,
Are you trying to watch episodes from the US store and are you trying to play them from outside the USA? -
Not authorized to play this content
OK, I see this has been posted before, but am unable to post a reply because the post was archived. So I am posting again.
I keep receiving this message when trying to view any of my movies that have been purchased from iTunes, even though when I go to iTunes, the movie(s) have already been authorized.
Not sure why this is happening but the only thing I can figure out is I recently had to have my HD replaced and luckily thanks to target disk mode, and being able to re-sync all of my information from my old HD, I didn't have to change anything. But it appears that with my Front Row, nothing is authorized.
Any advice on what to do or how to correct this? I really like watching it in Front Row other than iTunes because of the easy access remote.
Thanks!I have a similar problem. I downloaded 3 RENTED episodes of a TV show, and when I try to play them using Front Row, I get the cryptic message, "! You are not authorized to play this content." I can play previously PURCHASED episodes just fine, and I can play these rented episodes in iTunes, but Front Row refuses to play them. I've de-authorized and re-authorized the computer (a MacMini) to no avail. All my software is up-to-date (OS X, iTunes 10, etc.). Frankly, I think that Apple has screwed this up, and rented TV shows (as opposed to purchased shows) don't play properly in Front Row. Any ideas?

Why do I get an error message after renting a movie on apple tv, " this tv is not able to play this move"
I may have answered my own question. After some more research, it seems that the videos that won't play have a FairPlay value associated with them and they were all purchased prior to June 2009. Now I just need to figure out how to get around this.

Updated my ATV2 & now get message telling me my ATV is not authorized to play this content
This is a HD movie rented from iTunes on my iPad. Why won't it play?
Several people have had this problem. Log out and back in on homesharin on both the TV and computer. if that doesn't work try restarting the ipad, ATV, and computer.
Last resort is to contact apple and submit a bug report
