Your brand-new FCP HD editing suite!

Hey
I'm planning on building a new HD-editing suite, but I need to convince my boss to go the FCP way (instead of Avid).
After showing the huge price-difference, he said I should build a complete editingsuite on paper.
As I'm not all that experienced yet (only graduaded last July), I'm calling for help/hints/tricks/...
All our media is captured over HD-SDI using a HDCAM Deck.
We plan on using the Apple ProRes (HQ) codec for daily use (or current FCP-suite can't handle it due to an old AJA-card I guess)
We might need some uncompressed HD occasionally.
We use the voice-over tools frequently.
All I'm sure about is:
- Mac Pro (probably the newest release) --> not sure about gfx card though
- XSAN for storage (unless you guys have a better solution)
I'm especially interested in the capture-card.
I just can't decide wether AJA or Blackmagic is what I need (let alone which of the cards/boxes)
According to some only AJA has hardware support for the Apple ProRes codec, but others say that's just a story.
After a first look, the Blackmagic has way more ports than a AJA device.
Any tips/hints/setups/... are more than welcome!
Thanks in advance.

Remember - Xsan is just software. It is not a complete storage system. You will still need storage device(s).
If you want uncompressed HD, you will need a Fibre Channel or 10Gig Ethernet system. You will need drives, servers, switches, cables and cards - these are not cheap. They are also complex to set up. How often will you be using uncompressed HD? Will it be enough to justify the extra cost and complexity?
How many computers will you have? If you have just the one, Xsan is unnecessary. You might want to check out one of these instead:

  • Does your brand new laptop come with a "Certified Repaired HDD"?

The hard disk of my HP G72-B63NR laptop has just crashed. I bought this brand new in Jan 2011 but did not purchase any extended warranty, so I am fully prepared to get a new hard disk and restore the system myself. However, to my surprise, when I remove the hard disk, I discovered that it is a "Certified Repaired HDD" from Seagate!
I googled and found a post from someone saying that their HP computers at work are like that too. Does anyone else have the same experience?
I bought the laptop brand new, so I am sure the hard disk came with the laptop because I have not changed my hard disk. Like I said, I am prepared to get a new disk myself, but this really leaves a bad taste.

Thanks much for the information. According to our database, the hard drive in your system is replaced in July 2011 in a HP service Center.

  • Add your name if your brand new ipod didnt' connect like it should!

Since Christmas we have had a total of 6 ipods that all died after we plugged them into the USB port. We have replaced them 3 times.
I want to know since around christmas time how many of us have had to get replacements?
Please add the date you bought them , the color, and if you got them replaced.
    I will start
    Christmas 2005 - 2 30GB white ipods - replaced 3 times for a total of 6
Also, for someone that has a WORKING ipod that has never had a problem, is the ipod suppose to get hot when you plug the ipod into the usb port. and when i mean hot i mean hot enough you can only touch it for a second or two. the hottest part is right below the connector. is this normal?
Please add to my list. please

If you use a rules-based firewall, do you have a rule permitting Firefox to talk to its security component via TCP through the localhost address? You need to have that to use secure pages with Mozilla browsers.
McAfee can cause problems with Mozilla browsers. It has a history of doing that.

  • Display issue on brand new 2014 X1 Carbon Touch

So I was about to start raving about my X1C that I just received. Loving the display, the keyboard, build quality, etc. I had no gripes and was just browsing away when suddenly the screen did the full glitch. I recognize this as what happens when something's messed with the motherboard/display adapter. So I gave it a reset. All was normal and then it happened again. I was able to replicate it 3-4 times and it keeps happening. I never dropped it or anything. It was always just stationary.
I can't believe this. I had problems with the first gen non-touch and touch. I was hoping by now they have improved.

  • Brand New MBP 15 RD, no Org/Grn light on MagSafe2 - unable to start MBP as battery is completely drained out! Won't charge with 2 different MgS2 chargers! Help/ideas?

I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013) model. After unpacking, I plugged in the MagSafe2 power adaptor to the MagSafe2 port and everything looked fine.
However, after charging the battery to 100%; I disconnected the MagSafe2 power adaptor. When the battery charge percentage fell to below 25%, I reconnected the MagSafe2 power adaptor and noticed that the Orange light (indicating that the battery is being charged) was not lit.
Furthermore, when I let the battery die out to 0%; the battery won't recharge and neither an Orange or Green light on the MagSafe2 power adaptor. I had bought a spare adaptor for work and the same issue with this MagSafe2 power adaptor. So it was certain that the problem wasn't with the MagSafe2 power adaptor but rather with the MagSafe2 port on the Macbook Pro!
I took the Macbook Pro and MagSafe2 power adaptor to the local authorized Apple Service Provider who decided to hold onto my gear for 3-4 days to ascertain the source of the problem! Unfortunately no Apple Retail Stores or Genius Bars in the country that I live in.
All in all, very frustrating to know that your brand new Macbook Pro costing USD 3,300 is faulty straight out of the box!

    You said:
I took the Macbook Pro and MagSafe2 power adaptor to the local authorized Apple Service Provider who decided to hold onto my gear for 3-4 days to ascertain the source of the problem!
    Do they still have it?
From your indications there is a faulty IO board
Contact Apple for return options given your location issue and no proximity to an Apple shop.
    Peace to you.

I have read your post on how your brand new desktop computer is experiencing slow Internet. Are you other wireless devices experiencing a similar issue? Does this occur with more than one browser?
In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on Windows 8 stops responding or becomes very slow after connecting to the Internet. This should help improve the speed of your computer's browsing capabilities.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • FCP Uncompressed Editing on a new Mac Pro

    Hello everybody,
I too am about to empty my wallet into Apple's bank account.
I am upgrading my editing capacity and have the following wish list in order to edit compressed and uncompressed 8 or 10 bit high definition video shot with HDV and DVCPro HD camcorders:
Mac Pro - 2x 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon Processors
    2 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card
    1 x 250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA (as boot drive)
    3 x 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (as striped footage drives)
Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel - as main FCP screen)
Apple Cinema HD Display (23" flat panel - as HD monitor)
I already own Final Cut Studio and run FCP 5.1.1
    My questions are:
    1. Is the above hard drive set up fast enough for 8 and/or 10 bit uncompressed HD/HDV editing?
    2. Will I need any extra hardware - besides the graphics card - in order to see every single pixel of 1920 x 1080 footage?
I know others on the Apple Discussions forums have asked similar questions but I am still not certain which set up is best for me.
    Thanks in advance.
P.S. Dear Mr Jobs. Thanks in advance for allowing PAL users of FCP to edit 720 footage from Panasonic's HVX-200 camcorder.

    G4 PowerBook, 1.67GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Long-time FCP user

I have just found out that my plans for a Mac Pro with 4 internal drives (one as boot drive, the other three striped as footage RAID) will NOT be fast enough to edit uncompressed HD material.
I have just read this on the Black Magic Design website:
Blackmagic Disk Speed Test reported about 170 MB/sec which was easily fast enough for HD uncompressed 10 bit. However this three-disk internal solution is more suited to people needing simple capture and playback of HD, such as designers and effects artists. They just want simple clip capture and playback and the built-in three-disk array is a great solution for them. There are also newer 750 GB disks, which are faster, and so performance could increase further.
For editors who have hundreds of cuts and/or effects in their projects, we would strongly recommend an external disk array with multiple disks.
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=60#intel_tiger
An external RAID system will have to be the way forward for me for now. Thanks to you all for trying to answer my questions.
    Charlie.

  • FCP 7 will NOT open with my brand new Retina MacBook Pro, any ideas?

I got my brand new retina-display macbook pro in the mail today. I installed Final Cut Studio 3, with dmg file I made from original disk, right serial numbers etc. Upgraded to 7.0.3 through the software update.
Final Cut opened once (which was fine) and I realized I had to install magic bullet looks to keep working on a project I had been working on.
After I did so FCP would not open. Thinking this was the problem, I completely uninstalled all plugins using Red Giants official uninstall app. I also deleted the Boris continuum plugins lots of people say is a problem in Mountain Lion with FCP startup issues.
I then used FCS remover to completely remove the entire suite and restarted, emptied the trash etc for a clean slate.
Upon reinstalling, Final Cut will not open. The startup screen shows up, goes through profiling for RT extreme etc and then closes and the icon disappears from the dock. Everything else opens, motion, compressor, dvd studio pro. Everything is fine except for Final Cut. I have trashed preferences and reinstalled numberous times and triple checked there are no rogue plugins lying around. Nothing seems to work. The only thing I haven't tried is restoring the machine to factory settings and starting from scratch.
This is incredibly frustrating, does anyone have any insight?
    Thanks.

Thanks David. I wiped the machine and rinstalled Lion and started from scratch again which was a bummer but worked. I feel like the earlier plugins I installed had something to do with it.

Is anyone  as frustrated as i am...just bought a brand new 13" powerbook to find  that I can't load my adobe creative suite 2.3 software using the lion os! I need solutions  that do not involve spending more $$$$ one the newest CS version. After googling problem, I find I am not the only one. Apple told me Creative Suite 3 would work, but others said no.  Version 5.5 seems to be most reliable. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

No, you're not the only person who failed to do any homework before making your purchase. You will have to upgrade your Adobe software at the very least. Before you post another complaint about what doesn't run see

  • Time Machine Error with brand new WD My Book Studio Edition

I have a brand new iMac and just bought a new WD My Book Studio Edition 500 gb HD for specific use with my Time Machine. The iMac has a 500 HD is about 3 months old and the WD HD is brand new. I am getting an error when I try to activate and back up with Time Machine that says, " Time Machine Error. This backup is too large for a backup volume. The backup requires 524.4 gb but only 465.5 gb are available. To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
I copied the files from the Time Machine to my hard drive to make as much space as possible. I have a capacity of 465.44 GB and 28.48GB of free space on my MacHD. I have a capacity of 465.64 GB and 465.49 GB of free space on my WD. It is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) the way it was originally sold. I have not tried to reformat. Not too sure about how to. But I have tried all of these scenarios.
I have tried the following and nothing works to get Time Machine backing up at all:
    1. I have changed the preferences in Time Machine Options to a smaller file size excluding the applications folder (appx. 12 GB),
    2. I have zapped the P-RAM,
    3. I have reset the index in the Spotlight by putting my Macintosh HD and Time Machine in the Privacy section, let it reindex and then pulled it out, and
    4. I have deleted the preferences in Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
Nothing is working and I bought the HD when I was home visiting in the states and I live in Bogota, Colombia. Quite hard to return HD.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Marsh64

You have a nearly full 500 GB hard drive and you are trying to use TM with a 500 GB hard drive - but the way TimeMachine works, your TimeMachine hard drive should be at least twice the size of your backup data. In other words, to use TM effectively you should have bought a 1 TB external drive.
With a 500 GB drive for backups, you need to determine exactly what has to be backed up and what can be left out. If you open the TimeMachine preferences you'll see that there's an Options button. Click it and you can select folders to exclude from backing up. For example, you might decide that you don't need to back up your music because it is all on your iPod anyway and the Mac OS and your applications are all on CD so those can be left out. By carefully paring the list down you may be able to get your backup data down under 250 GB and if so, then TimeMachine will do the job for you.
Another solution would be to drop TimeMachine as your backup solution and simply use a program such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner (CCC) to perform your backups. There are advantages and disadvantages to each backup method. As you mull your options, don't be afraid to ask more questions.
