Your carrier may charge for SMS imessage

everytime i turn my imessage or facetime on my iPhone 4S says " your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate imessage " and i don't know what to do . can you help me ?

To activate iMessage, the phone will send an SMS to Apple, containing your phone details. Your carrier may charge you for that if you don't have an unlimited SMS account or only a certain number of free texts. This will only happen once. After iMessage is set up, you will only be charge by your carrier if the iMessage can't be sent as iMessage, for example if the recipient does not have an iPhone,or if iMessage is not available.
This can be set up in Settings/Messages/

    What is your technical question?

  • TS5185 Is there a charge for using iMessage?

Is there ever an extra charge for using iMessage?

    No.
When exchanging iMessages when connected to your carrier's cellular network for internet access, iMessages use data.

If you are using your phone as a hotspot for you to connect your iPad to for streaming then YOU will be charged for data... not your carrier.

  • Charged for using iMessage with another iPhone

Why did I get charged for
Using iMessage and texting another iPhone!

was the other iPhone on the iOS 5?  iMessages only works on latest iOS, so when you text an older phone it won't be free.
Also, even if you have iMessage, the color coding is what indicates if it will be an iMessage or an TXT Message.
    iMessage = Blue
    TXT Message = Green

  • I have international carrier charges for sms use when activating imessage would this be correct?

I have been charged for sending international SMS by my service provider when activating iMessage would this be correct?

Well definitly give live chat a try.
If after that and having already phoned them, you can still not get anywhere, maybe contact the mods using this form:
If you fill in this form: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 with a link back to your post for ref, the mods will get back to you. it can take up to 3 days.
But to be fair to the mods, give Live Chat a try first.

  • How can you manage data usage when cellular data is off, but you are using WiFi where your WiFi provider charges for data use?

I spend quite a few months each year in Canada where I use a Telus Cellular Hub device which is also my WiFi Router.  My iPhone 5 has Cellular Data set to "Off" which insures I won't be charged via my Verizon Wireless Service Provider for charges while in Canada.  Trouble is Telus, Rogers and all the Canadian Internet Providers charge for all Data going through their Systems.  Again, My Cellular Data on the iPhone 5 is turned off, but I use WiFi for such things as checking the Weather, or FaceBook, or searching the Web.
I believe that things may be happening in the background from various Apps that use quite a lot of Data.  It could be that iCloud is part of the issue with things being backed up automatically.  It also could be that Apps like AP or other News Apps are sending large amounts of Data in the photos associated with their New Stories, etc.  I typically turn off the App Store "Updates" such that they don't automatically load.  The FaceBook works now posted videos play when you are just scrolling through the News Feed.
I have been trying to fine an article somewhere which focuses on this specific problem but unfortunately many if not most articles are about folks worried about using Cellular Data while in a WiFi environment when their Cellular Data is turned on.
Does anyone know of a fairly comprehensive article about what settings on which Apps might reduce the Data Usage when Cellular Data is turned "Off" but you are going through a Service Provider who charges for all Data Accessed even when you are using WiFi?

Thanks for your comments, it is clear you understand my plight.  The trouble is fully understanding what Apps and App Features are transferring data in the background any time you happen to turn WiFi to on (even if you have had it off most of the day or night).  Obviously things like Location Services can constantly be sending and receiving data from my iPhone without any action on my part.  Also if you have things like photo backup on the iCloud then each time you take a photo you are sending a copy out.  All App Updates if set to Automatic also can add up to quite a bit of Data.  Reading the News on AP or scrolling through FB News Feed is actually adding up to a lot of Data.  There could be other culprits that I am not even thinking of.  I don't want to turn Apps like Find My Phone off or turn iCloud off due to loosing the value of such a program entirely.  Again thanks for your quick response.

  • Charged for SMS - did not use SMS

I have been charged for 2 SMS. I do not use SMS. The number listed for SMS in my detailed usage is a landline which is not capable of sending SMS. Spent 30 minutes on support chat with a rep who had a very poor grasp of english and accomplished nothing. Will be canceling Skype after this billing period.

I am now unable to send SMS messages from Skype, in spite of having a credit in my acct.
The message in the dialogue box is "to send a SMS to this number you need to verify your number.
    How do I get a skype #

  • My iphone keeps sending international messages for activating imessage

    Hi
I have enabled a feauture provider by my operator which tells me my sms costs etc.
It told me 4times that an international sms has been sent, immediately after recieving a notification that your operator may charge for imessage.
    What should I do to?

In order to successfully exchange iMessages, following conditions have to be met.
    1)  Both the parties should have iOS-5 or above.
    2)  Both parties should have iMessage successfully activated.
    3)  Both parties should be in 3G or WIFI reception area.
Check if you have "Send as SMS" option set to ON.
SETTINGS - MESSAGES - SEND AS SMS (Turn it OFF)
If this option is ON, your messages will be delivered as "ordinary text messages" when iMessage isn't available.

  • Can't see why I'm getting a bill for SMS messages

    Hi All
I am trying to find an answer to this and I'm hoping you might be able to help.
I have an iPhone 5 on a contract with a UK carrier ( O2 ). I often travel to the Middle East so to avoid horrendous call and data charges, I turn off cellular services and just to make sure I turn off the 'Send as SMS' option too. I would assume that this restricts me to Wi-Fi use only, which is what I want.
However my latest bill shows over $50 work of SMS charges for 'non-EU roaming' and I'm stumped as to why that might be.
Can anyone shed any light, please ?

Send as SMS only applies to iMessages (sent over wifi or cell data). You can see this option disppears if you trun off iMessage.
Regular SMS (sent to non-iMessage users) can still be sent. If you send a message in the Messages app and it is green, it is SMS and you will be charge for SMS text message.
    I turn off cellular services
Settings > General > Cellular  - Cellular data does not turn off all cell use. It turns off the cell data path.
SMS does not use cell data. It uses SMS/text data.
iMessages use cell data, as does web & email.

  • Charged for texting when I have a texting package

I had the 700 minute family share plan and also for my line I had a 500 text allotment. Today I go on my page to view my upcoming bill. I have a charge for $91.95 in texts. Made up of 15 total picture/video messages and 400+ regular texts. The total combined did not go over 500. It was around $40 in charges for sent and received messages.
So I had changed my plan to a better plan but set it to not go into effect until my next billing cycle which began 4 days ago.
Why do I have charges for all those texts when I had the 500 text package for $10? All those texts I am being charge for were during the previous billing cycle when I had the 500 allotment. I've since changed over to the 700 minute family talk and text plan which is unlimited texts.
Anyone hav ea clue what they are charging me for? Hopefully that made sense. Kind of tough to explain when you can't just show your bill right here to give the full picture.

Here is my portion of that bill minus my phone #s on the account. I have a feeling maybe they canceled something before I wanetd it to be? I was due for a new contract around 12/18 but I was shopping for a different plan so I just let that pass. So the current one would have just kept going as it was. The texting I used was obviously under 500 texts. I'm thinking maybe I got billed in advance for something to make it that way. I can't distinguish stuff too well.

  • Charge for texts when using iMessage

Why am I charged for texts that include photos or video when using iMessage to send or receive with other Apple products? Should the senders use an email address instead of my iPhone number? I have ATT with pay as you go texting. I'm only charged when there's a photo or video attached.

    Hi Garypsu,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if iMessages aren't sending correctly:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
If you still can't send or receive iMessages
Ensure that iMessage is turned on in Settings > Messages.
To send and receive iMessages, your device must have a valid cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.
    iPhone: Troubleshooting Cellular data
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
iMessage registration validates your Apple ID for use with iMessage. If you are unable to activate iMessage, follow this article.
If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will be resent using SMS or MMS, depending on the content. You can turn this behavior on or off in Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
Verify that the Apple ID or phone number is listed in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
Step 4 above describes how to turn off having failed iMessages send as texts to prevent this from happening.
    Cheers,
    - Ari
