Your iCloud storage will be reduced to 5 GB

Received the following mail this morning:
Your iCloud storage will be reduced to 5 GB on 09/30/2012.
However, you are currently using more than 5 GB.
Unless you take action before your downgrade takes effect, backups to iCloud will stop, and apps will no longer be able to save documents to iCloud. You can either free up storage or cancel your downgrade to keep your current storage plan for another year.
Any idea as to the reasons I got this mail?

So let me see if I understand this correctly.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple is standing before the world telling us that iCloud is the wave of the future and it's here now. Gone are optical drives, need for bigger SDD or HDDs, and with IOS6 and Mountain Lion, documents, pictures, movies, and musics seamlessly move across all your authorized platforms.
DO YOU THINK HE MIGHT HAVE MENTIONED THAT HE WAS GOING TO CHARGE FOR THAT NEW TECHNOLOGY?!?
What a complete rip-off. I have drank the Apple Kool-Aid and it isn't very good. Now a basic feature that I have come to relay on is gone and Apple will not get one red cent from me for doing so. Yes, they are big, rich and I am nothing in their eyes but its one more revenue stream they will not profit by.
While I am on the subject, great job Apple of getting rid of YouTube, a key intergrated application that I used daily until IOS6. Gone as well is transportation in your crappy map app. Sure was nice when it was Google and I could plan on it for the CTA (shout out to my fellow Chicagoians).  Next time Tim Cook wants to measure sizes with Google, just accept they make a better product and use it. When you get in an ego fight it's the customer that loses, not you. Remember all the great PC makers that have come and gone because they tried to be all things and block everyone out: Packard Bell, Wang, Gateway, IBM PC, Sony, and the list goes on.
Apple's ego is running the company. This is why the Samsung Galaxy commerical hit home to so many of us; why stand in line for a product that is behind the times and doesn't listen to its customers because it thinks it knows us better than we know ourselves.  Guess you must have forgotten about me.

  • I have 20Gb but an email says my Your iCloud storage will be reduced to 5 GB on 09/30/2012. What's up with that?

Any idea how to  straighten this out? 20Gb is checked in the Cloud account. Credit card info is correct. Everything looks like it's set up right to charge my card. Yet, I get this downgrade email.

I came across one of your replies to a related question:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4345674?start=0&tstart=0
    and you said:
It was indeed. Your iCoud storage was increased by 20GB (from the normal free 5GB) for free until 30 September as a concession because you migrated from MobileMe. After that date you have either to pay for the additional storage or allow it to be downgraded (which will lose some of your data if you have more than 5GB). (This has no effect on the amount of storage on iPhones, iPads or computers.)
Does this mean that as I am using Mail on my macs that I will not need to delete and trim down my emails to 5GB?  If this is the case, what happens to my icloud.com version of my emails - will they be automatically trimmed to 5GB?
Also read that  will not delete emails, just stop syncing and receiving more emails. is this correct?
Thanks again for all your help

  • HT4847 iCloud storage has been reduced to the free 5 GB

I got this Email from Icloud and my storage went down to 5GB, and I didn't request that, what should I do?
    Dear Mohamed Harb,
As requested, your iCloud storage has been reduced to the free 5 GB plan effective today. You can continue using iCloud with your free storage for as long as you like, or purchase another upgrade at any time.

Contact Apple at Express Lane (select your country, navigate to iCloud help and enter the serial number of one of your devices)

You have now exceeded your iCloud storage, including an additional amount provided to allow you to continue receiving email. As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage. I have 20GB remaining.  WHat is the issue here?

Today I received the same message but have 4.6gb available from a total of 5.0gb. I also received the same message when i first set up my icloud account and icloud was virtually empty. Unfortunately the only way i can see to contact apple is to pay for a telephone call. If anyone knows what is going on i would appreciate knowing.

  • HT204264 "If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, photos and videos won't upload to iCloud, and your library will no longer stay up to date across your devices."  Really?  Can't we support the existing "last 1k photos will be available in the cloud" mode

"If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, photos and videos won't upload to iCloud, and your library will no longer stay up to date across your devices."  Really?  Can't we support the existing "last 1k photos will be available in the cloud" model?  If we don't do this, won't this kill auto-sync of new photos from iOS devices to our libraries on our Macs (if the Mac's Photos app has auto syncing with the cloud turned on) once we go over our 5gb limit?  I have 350GB of photos in my Mac Photos library - I am not going to pay $20/month for 1tb iCloud storage.  Please advise, Apple.  Thank you.

I agree and am baffled by this also.  At first I was really excite about this new feature.  Mostly because I would be able to seamlessly sync videos along with my PhotoStream.  I just assumed there would be some systematic way to handle large libraries.  Like removing older files as the current PhotoStream does.  However, it appears that this new feature will simply 'shut down' when you reach your storage limit.  This just makes no sense to me.  I would have to double check, but I have all my photos and videos in iPhoto and stored on a 3 TB external hard drive and I think the full library is over 1 TB.  So, even if I was willing to pay $20 a month for photo syncing (which I am not) I couldn't do it because my library is too large.  Again I am just baffled why Apple cannot blend this new service with the existing PhotoSteam model.  My favorite aspect of PhotoSteam is that is uploads all my iPad and iPhone Photos to my Mac for permanent storage and it seems this is lost in the new version.

  • If I pay for extra iCloud storage will I be able to download more of my magazines?

If I pay for extra iCloud storage will I be able to download more of my magazines?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
No. To do that you need more space on your phone.

  • If I buy more iCloud storage, will I then be able to download the new iOS 6?

If I buy more iCloud storage, will I then be able to download the new iOS6?

No, if you are getting an out of space message you will need to clear some space on your iPhone.

  • You have now exceeded your iCloud storage

HAS ANYONE ELSE RECEIVED SUCH MESSAGE? My storage had 3,1GB available when checked after the message...
You have now exceeded your iCloud storage, including an additional amount provided to allow you to continue receiving email. As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage.
To free up storage in your account:
    Step 1:
On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud.
    Step 2:
    Tap Storage & Backup.
    Step 3:
Tap Manage Storage and choose items you’d like to delete or stop backing up.
For more information on managing your iCloud storage, please read this article.
    To buy more storage:
    Step 1:
On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud.
    Step 2:
    Tap Storage & Backup.
    Step 3:
    Choose Buy More Storage.
You can also buy more iCloud storage from a Mac or PC.

A number of people have received similar messages in error. However their email doesn't usually get blocked. If you have confirmed that it is indeed blocked by sending yourself a test message, you will need to contact Support.
If you currently happen to have AppleCare, either because you recently bought Apple hardware or have paid to extend the inititial period, you can contact them here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
You will need the serial number of the covered hardware.
If you are not covered by AppleCare, then - in common with other free email services - there is no free support and you may be asked to pay a fee. You should insist that this is a problem they have caused and you shouldn't be charged.

  • I cloud storage will be reduced?

Got an email saying, the storage will be reduced to 5 GB on 30.09.2012. is this a joke? I still have 9.6 G available? What do i have to do? thanks, jess

This is correct in that Apple gave mobileme subscribers an extra buffer (think it was 20GB) for 12 month period.
Thereafter the extra storage will be charged for.
You can see prices and buy via the iCloud tab in system Preferences.
    Or read this

  • My ipad mini icloud storage will not drop below 2.5 GB.

My ipad mini icloud storage will not drop below 2.5 GB. I have deleted/OFFed everything. Still at 2.5?!?! I have removed and restored account. Still at 2.5. When I turn on larger apps like iMovie and garage band, it will go above 2.5, but never below. I have turned off all apps and all things like mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, safari, photo stream, and documents. Still 2.5. I also have an iPhone linked to the account it is using 911 mb's of storage,
I will not buy more storage.
Hopefully someone can figure this out
    Thank-you,
    Jeanmarie

When you turn off mail, contacts, etc on your devices, that does not remove them from the icloud server; it just prevents the data from syncing to the device.  Your email, for example, remains on icloud until you delete all of it.  Same for contacts, etc.  Have you done that?

  • If i purchase more iCloud storage, will it allow me to take more photos to keep in my photo library? Or does iCloud storage just count towards photostream?

If i purchase more iCloud storage, will it allow me to take more photos to keep in my photo library? Or does iCloud storage just count towards photostream?

Sorry, thats wrong. I just installed iOS 8.1 and got an error saying that it requires 5,6 GB of free space, but I have only 2,6 Gb free space in my iCloud Account.
You will need to pay in order to use iCloud Photo Library in order to use it for a huge collection of photos. 5GB is not very much.
Edit: I though you were talking about iCloud photo library.. I got that wrong.

  • If you delete your icloud backup will it delete everything that was backed up?

If you delete your icloud backup will it delete everything that was backed up?

It will only delete the backup from iCloud.  It won't delete anything from your phone.

The only thing I can think of that may cause this would be storage buffering.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4873.

  • What can you do to empty your iCloud storage?

My iCloud storage is almost full. What should I do to empty it out? Where should I look for big files?

This article explains how to manage your iCloud storage: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.  Large areas usually include your backups (especially if you have a lot of photos & videos on your phone) and your email (especially if you keep lots of old email with large attachments).
