Your Recommedations For Capturing With HDV To DVCPro HD

Hi All,
I am about to start a new wedding project and I am using my LHe Kona for the first time to capture for output to a dvd. I want to know your best settings for capturing with LHe in FCP with my Z1 Sony? I will be capturing in 1080i and I would like to know which DVCPRO HD format to use with the best DVD end result. I have a totally new Caldigit Duo 500 GB raid as a scratch disk the can capture up to 140 mbs as most of you already know. Your help would be appreciated

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to choose the Kona LH's "easy setup" for capturing DVCPROHD with the frame rate you've shot... then make HD or SD DVD's from the resulting sequence... Might have to change your device control to firewire, but it should work just fine.

  • Use standard DV Video out for monitring with HDV Project?

i got a ADS Pyro AV Link fo Christmas and has a composite/S Video out on the back....and connected the composite to a monitor.....and FCE has a video out option in the View menu....and whenever i select it (with an HDV proj.) it goes from the Pyro's standard color bars to a black screen.... wheever i play my project back in the canvas it still is black? whats wrong? or is it incompatibility?

That's not going to do what you want. FireWire is only for DV material not for HDV that's been converted to the Apple Intermediate Codec. You can output to HDV via FireWire, but only using the print to video function.

  • "Checking your addons for compatibility with this version of Firefox" hangs

On one pc (but not others) running Windows 7, when I install a new version of FF and the box for "checking your addons etc" comes up, it gets 80% of the way through then just grinds away until I hit cancel. Is there any way to find outr which addon is causing this problem?

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also try to delete the addons.sqlite file.

  • We need to upgrade your catalog for use with Lightroom 6.

Adobe CC member.  Downloaded new LR CC.  Shows as installed in Adobe creative cloud.  Wouldn't run at first, but logged out and back in.  Now upon launch I get a dialogue box named Lightroom Catalog Upgrade, asking to click to upgrade my catalog, but this freezes with an unending blue circle  and the program never launches.  I have tried deleting and reloading the entire program.  I still have LR 5 on my machine.  Is this normal?  I thought CC replaced 5.  Help appreciated.

    To 3110,
I am facing a similar situation here. The description that you posted matches my requirement more or less.
So... which option did u choose? And any suggestions on how to go about it for people who are implementing a similar architecture?

  • Best color workflow with hdv source material?

    Hi,
I am wondering about the best workflow for working with hdv material in color?
My first Color experience, I sent a AIC timeline (hdv source) to color, made my corrections, clicked NO when sending back to fcp when asked if I wanted the rendered timeline to be conformed to color render settings (apple pro-res) as I wanted the same sequence settings back in fcp.
I then tried to off/online back to my source hdv capture files, and therein arose the problems. Because color had renamed the files, the new names came up in the re-connect media window, not the hdv source. When ignoring these and locating the hdv source, the corrections were not attached.
After advice, tried onlining the original, locked edit, opening in color - files came up red (offline?), but could not apply the grades from the previous project anyway, as the whole program crashed before I could do anything?
Thoughts on workflow, theories on what I may have done wrong greatly appreciated.
Lastly, a lot of noise appeared in some clips I adjusted in color, which did not occur when making similar corrections to the same clips using the 3-way color corrector within fcp itself.
    How come?
    Thanks for listening,
    -Tom

Hi Tom, agree 100% with all of JP OWENS comments on this thread. This is very good advice.
Myself, coming from the dark side of a SONY HDV (HVR-Z1P) and DUMPING the SONY for a Panasonic DVCPROHD HVX-200 iFRAME HD format 66mbs and 110Mbs DVCPROHD 4:2:2 CODEC was primarily because when using COLOR on the HDV it was as dreadful as JP OWENS says it is.
As as has been mentioned in this thread, for working with HDV and trying to perform any reasonable grading using color.app you would indeed move it all to  PRORES422 by either:
    • ingesting it as proposed from the source as APPLE PRORES 422 or
    • ingesting and then BATCH CONVERTING in FCP (or go via a COMPRESSOR.app DROPLET - a favourite of mine) and THEN importing that into FCP.
It gives you these workflow advantages (again pointed out by Mr Owens):
    • iFRAME format editing in FCP is "faster" (not GoPs to play with in 25Mbs MPEG2 HDV)) and
    • workflow transcoding is faster. (many threads in these forums concerning exporting from an HDV timeline).
However to roughly quote Stu Maschwitz (his DV REBEL book) "+..converting DV to a near loss-less codec is a bit like carrying a golf ball around in a streamer trunk+".. applying this to HDV as well simply meaning that there is also NOT much colour information to work with in grading.correction applications like color.app.
Thus there is NO colour benefit from working in prores 422 from HDV source.
IN short, work in PRORES422 from your HDV source and your workflow will improve and efficiencies will be seen.

  • Best "Capture" workflow for projects mixing HDV tape and XDCAM footage

I'm trying to determine the best workflow for projects that combine XDCAM and HDV footage.
I'd obviously do the editing in a project designed for XDCAM, as that's the higher quality footage,
and render the HDV clips in the XDCAM timeline...ending up with an XDCAM end product.
I'd use SONY'S XDCAM TRANSFER to get the clips into FCP.
My question concerns capturing the HDV footage in this scenario. I've never been able to get
the Log and Capture feature for HDV footage to work, unless I've created an HDV project and am capturing into that HDV project.
So, generally, I create an HDV project, open the log and capture utility which is now set to capture HDV, and then capture the footage. I then close that project and create a new project, designed for XDCAM footage. I use XDCAM Transfer to get the XDCAM footage into the project, and I import
the previously captured HDV footage into that browser and start editing, rendering the HDV in the XDCAM timeline.
My question...do I really have to open, what is essentially a "fake" HDV project just to capture that HDV footage? You don't seem to have the option of capturing HDV footage (out of a camera or HDV tape deck) directly into an XDCAM project. If I try to change the capture or audio video settings of the XDCAM project to HDV, you get messages saying you can't do it.
Is there something I'm missing or a more streamlined way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any input.

No need to jump through these hoops. Just set yourself up with a universal Easy Setup that will handle both. Choose your regular XDCAM HD Easy Setup then open the Audio / Video Settings window and change the Capture Preset to "HDV" and the Device Control Preset to "HDV Firewire" ... then click the "Create Easy Setup" button and save it for recall whenever needed.
Regarding the overall workflow, I'd seriously question the idea of creating XDCAM HD masters. No real benefit to that unless you need to export to XDCAM HD. Much better would be export your final master as Apple ProRes 422.
    Best
    Andy

  • Need Help with HDV Capturing

if i want to capture HD with final cut pro
do i need a specific hard drive or it'll work on 7200rpm
and do i need a specific card for not loosing quality if i wanna work full HDV or firewire is ok
    Can anyone help me please
    Thank You

You're asking about HDV, which is an MPEG2 compressed format. It has about the same bandwidth as DV NTSC. Its 1080i version is about 3.6 MB/sec.
That measn it will run fime on a single 7200rpm hard drive. AS with any media files, you should install a second SATA drive inside your G5 for all your media files.
Now if you want to do full uncompressed 1080i HD, that runs at ,say, 140 MB/sec, and you do need a special capture card for that, like a Kona card from Aja or a DecklinkHD card from Blackmagic Design, and a very fast external drive array as well.

  • HELP NEEDED CAPTURE DV FOOTAGE WITH HDV VIDEO CAMERA

I'm trying to capture DV video footage I've done years ago with my Sony DCR-HC40E PAl into FCP version 6. with my new camera HDV video Sony HDR-HC7 1080.i/mini dv so I can capture it into FCP but it's jerky, An yone know the setting for both the HDv camera and FCP to get the footage perfect as the rginal video.
    Cheers

From the FCP menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DV-PAL > OK. (Use DV PAL Anamorphic if you shot wide screen).
Menu bar once more: Sequence > Settings > Set Sequence Preset > OK.
That camera should detect the DV format tape and playback with the correct settings automatically.
All you ned to do is connect it via FireWire and capture.
For everything else, here's the manual for that camera: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDRHC5.pdf

  • Settings for Capture and edit HDV

I Bought two Sony V1's yesterday and shot a wedding with them today. No problem capturing the footage but when I place it in the time line I need to render. ( Red line above footage) So i guess the settings are wrong.
In the Audio/Video tab, I have
    Sequence preset HDV - 1080i50
    Capture Present HDV
Device Control Preset Sony HDV Firewire
What else havent I done? (It was a 13 hour shoot so I'm a bit tired but just wanted to see how it looked. Maybe a good night sleep will help!)
MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Two 3Ghz Duel Core Intel Xeon 4 Gig ram

You are going to get this sort of thing a lot. When you try to print to tape at the end it can happen again.
If you are getting problems you should reset your easy settings and copy and paste the edited material (not the sequence or you wil just nest the old sequence inside it) into a newly created easy set up sequence.

  • Final Cut Exp - Working with HDV format & exporting for web in 16:9 format

I'm working with SONY HVR-A1U prosumer camcorder which captures footage in 1440x1080resolution. My goal is to produce movies fro web in 16:9 size and upload them on "Brightcove" website
After editing this footage in Final Cut Express I'm trying now to export my movie using "File-Export-Using Quick Time Conversion" option ... and I ran into the big issue with video size settings and how the video gets squezed when uploaded on Brightcove website.
To get 16:9 size out of FCE, I need to:
Set the "custom" size 640x360 and set "preserve aspect ration" - use letter box
Then the resulting movie plays as 16:9 in Quicktime ... however after uploading it on Brightcove it chages the aspect again ... and becomes squashed.
I would appreciate any advice how to overcome this "squashing" of export when working with HDV footage.
    Thanks
    Peter

    Captured video looks:
full of orizontal lines (that look like scan lines) expecially evident on figure edges and on motion subjects
    and
like it was resized 1440x1080i from a different lower resolution
    video is exported with compressor
    MPEG-2 3.7Mbps 2-pass 16:9
Description: Fits up to 150 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 120 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • Having issues with playback and capture with canon's hdv XLH1

We have the sony hdv deck for capture, but we recently got the canon hdv xlh1.
When we try to capture or playback on the sony deck using a tape with canon footage, it stutters and drops frames, anyone else having issues with this? Deck control is non existant when we hook up the canon to the system.

Well... yes and no... Canon's 60i will play thru the sony machine, and it will play from the camera on thru FCP, but without deck control. Everything else the canon shoots aka HDV (30p and 24p), the Sony deck will not play correctly at all. We just happened to have the Canon rep at our FCP user's group tonight, and this is what he reported. ALSO he said that FCP will be supporting this new format shortly... (whatever that means... LOL...) The camera itself is not currently supported by FCP.
It does have an interesting feature though. If you have a Kona 2 card and an audio card, you can capture from the camera true HD in 4:2:2 color space. It has an SDI HD output.. but doesn't carry the audio with it. Course this isn't a "cheap" workaround for now because you'd also need an extremely fast disk array to capture the HD. and an audio card, and an HD video capture card... yikes. That Panny P2 camera lookin pretty good right now eh?
