"Your system is low on disk space" during Backup

Whenever I try and perform a backup, PSE 8 errors with "Your system is low on disk space, and Elements Organizer cannot perform this operation.  Try removing some fiels to free up disk space."
The problem is that I have five disks on this system (brand new Dell i7-920 with 8GB RAM, btw), with the *smallest* amount of free space being 280GB.  I get the problem on all disks.  My system disk (c:) has 689GB of free space.
I had this problem on my old computer, which also had plenty of free space on the traget external backup disk, but only had about 30GB free on the system disk, so I assumed it was a lack of working space on the system disk for buffering, queuing, whatever...
My catalog is about 30,000 items, totalling about 175GB (according to PSE at the beginning of the backup process).
Any ideas??

Yes, I am still facing the same issue, but have long since come up with another backup scheme, and no longer require a resolution.
Also, I only want PSE to update photos and only photos - no video, audio or anything else.  I don't believe the built in backup function allows for that.
Thanks anyway.
Mark

  • Your system is low on disk space

I have a Dell running Windows 7. The system and programs is on a 200 GB solid state drive with about 50 GB free which is my C drive. The photos and videos are on a 2 TB hard drive with 1 TB free which is my D drive. I am trying to do a routine backup to an external 2 TB drive which has 1.5 TB free but I get the message "your system is low on disk space and Elements Organiser cannot perform this operation".
I have backed up before when the catalogue was about 100 GB but it is now about 180 GB. I created a test catalogue with just a few photos in and that backed up without a problem.
Can anyone help? Is PSE trying to create a large temporary file on the C drive so that is the problem? If so, what is the solution?

I was able to do an incremental backup.  Having done that I had another try at a full backup and it worked!
I tried everything every other possibility suggested by forums without success and it seems to be an issue others have so it's worth a try for them. It clearly was nothing to do with system resources so that was a waste of very many hours.

  • Your system is low on disk space and elements organizer cannot  perform this operation

your system is low on disk space and elements organizer cannot  perform this operation is the error message i keep getting. i have emptied my recycle bin and got rid of some software that i don't use and im still getting the error. Any Suggestions?

As you might be aware, when you apply auto-fix, a new file (of almost equal size) is created on HDD. This issue might arise if you don't have sufficient hard disk space on the drive which contains the source image. Do you have enough storage space available on your HDD?

When doing catalog backup get message " your system is low on disk space, and elements organizer cannot perform the operation.  If create a catalog with 20 pictures backup works OK.  backing up to a 1TB external drive.  Have 16705 pictures in catalog.  Total disk space for pictures is 192 MB.  Why am I getting message?

Do you really mean MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) ?
Even if its GB, the free space may be enough, depending on your files size, especially with videos or raw files.
When you start the backup process, it first shows you the total size of the catalog.

  • Elements Backup "Your system is low on disk space..."

Hi and thanks in advance, I took my computer into a tech repair shop and they said they couldn't handle it but I needed to call Adobe.
    1. I have a 2TB 7200 RPM SATA-3G RAID (2 x 1TB HDD) (HP Model Pavillion Elite HPE-450t, 9 GB SDRAM
    2. Using Adobe Elements 9.0 have never had a problem backing up onto an expansion drive.
    3. Now I get the following: Your system is low on disk space and Elements Organizer cannot perform this function. Try removing some files to free up space."
    4. I have about 500 GB free on my C drive and my back up files are about 500 GB. I have lots of videos and scanned photos.
    5. How can I back up and what can I do in the future as I plan on continuing archiving large files.
    THanks for any help.

You could think about purchasing an external hard drive. They have now come down in price and often start with 1Tb or 2Tb of storage. Some even come with a fast fire wire connection for fast transfer.
Make a full back up (Ctrl+B in Organizer)
You can then make periodic incremental backups which will be much quicker.

  • CSV Volume low on disk space warning alltough the space isn't used (VSS?)

    HI Guys,
we are  running a HV-2012  Cluster. most of the VM's are backuped by DPM 2012 r2.
Recently i noticed some "CSV low disk Space Warning" withing SCOM.
Today i looked at one of the CSV's.
The Size is 1800GB and if you look at the Size of all the Folders on the Volume within the Explorer they are 1250 GB.
After that i looked a the Failover Cluster Manager -> Storage -> Disk: This console states that there are only 36GB Free on the Volume.
My guess is that the VSS Snapshots use up the Disk-Space? But if i do a vssadmin list shadowstorage
    only drive c is displayed.
Could this end up in a Problem or is the vss Space freed automaticly?
Or is there something else wrong?
    Anyone a clue on this?
    regards
    Stefan

First thing is that you're running out of space and need to move quickly to make space while you figure this out. When you run out of space, the VMs will shut down.
How many VMs you have on that CSV and many VHD(x) disks you have an the CSV? Another question that matters here is how fast is your backup for each VM?
Regardless of the backup software being DPM or any other VSS based backup, it works by creating a checkpoint of the VM, which creates a snapshot of its disks. A volume snapshot turns the VM disk into a read only disk and starts a change log disk (.avhdx)
file. The crash consistent read-only .vhdx file is then copied by the backup software agent from the host to the backup server. Upon successful completion, the agent deletes the VM checkpoint, which merges the disk snapshot, merging the .avhdx and .vhdx files
    back into one file.
So, if you're backup time for this VM takes hours, during that time, the VM disk space usage can grow a lot more that what it would usually use. If you run out of disk space then, backup will fail, the VM will be suspended, and you cannot bring it online,
since the merge needs even more disk space.

  • Low on disk space, and some dim choices by me

    Hello
I am running a bit low on disk space so video editing is a bit of a worry for me! I have a DV camcorder and import hours of footage, only to use a minute or two of that to create a "1 song length" mini film.
After I was happy with a few projects I thought I would delete the raw event files and then as the video had been shared with itunes, and I could no longer make any edit, I went a step further and deleted the project in imovie. Now the problems start :o) It was only after doing this that I realised it would be a good idea to share the finished movie with .mac "My Galley" thing, and media browser. But as the option to do this was in the imovie project I'm a bit stuck. Oh how I wish I had used that time machine thing :o)
For one movie that I really wanted to share on .mac I ended up reimporting the movie back into imovie as a new event then creating a new project. Imagine how silly I feel now!
So I know what not to do! But I'm still a little unclear on what is the best approach. I want to build a movie, share with various places, but delete the raw files and use as little disk space as possible after I am happy with the movie.
    Any tips?
    Regards
    Steve

I don't have iMovie '08, so not sure if this still works in that version or not. But as an iMovie '08 user, you can download and install version 6 which will allow the following...
One way to go about it is to import your tapes, giving you hours of footage. Now do a rough edit of the parts you think you may want to still use by putting clips down on the timeline, rough editing out parts you know you don't want, etc. Do not add transitions, titles, etc. at this time. Just clips to the timeline and rough cuts. So now your timeline is say 15-30 minutes of stuff out of the original hours of stuff. Save the project. Close the project.
Start a new project. Open the folder where the old project is. Right click on the project icon and pick "Show Package Contents" which will open the folder structure of the project. In the folders you should have the project reference QT movie of the same name as you project, eg. MyProject.mov which will be a somewhat small file (kilobytes). You can verify this is your old project as you edited down by simply opening it in QT player and reviewing it to make sure it is just the 15-30 minute rough edit you did.
If it is the right file, drag and drop it onto your new project window. iMovie will now import the footage needed. The nice thing about this is it should only import those 15-30 minutes, not the original hours of footage. Once in the new project and you are satisfied you have the footage you wanted. Save the project and you can now trash the old project, empty the system trash and free up all that drive space. The new project will only have the 15-30 minutes of footage and not all the extra footage from the original tapes.
Disclaimer: I am still an old iMovie 4 user, so also not first hand knowledgeable about iMovie 6. You might be able to simply copy clips off the timeline from the old project to the new project, but I am not sure if that brings over just the footage in those clips, or if it makes a full copy of the original media files (this bringing over the entire clips including the parts you cut out). I am sure other iMovie 6 users can jump in here and help refine the process for iM6 shortcuts I don't know about.

  • HT1923 hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can i remove iTunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space and then just run it from the hard drive. instead of taking space on the mac? even if the mac no longer has enough to accommo

Hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can I remove itunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space?...and then run it from the hard drive instead of the mac, even if the mac no longer has space to accomodate the size of the library?

    Yes.
Copy your music iTunes Library folder to the external drive and change the Advanced settings in iTunes to point to this new location.
Once you're happy with these changes you can delete the same Library from your User account to free up space on the internal drive.

  • Dangerously low on disk space

My iMovie projects are saved to an external 160 GB Firewire hard drive. Even with 60 GB freespace on the drive, I frequently get the "Dangerously low on disk space" warning
The external hard drive is formatted as as MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and is not partitioned.
My current project is at 18.7 GB.
    Any suggestions?

I'm seeing the same thing. Durning a long capture in iMovie HD 6.03 the import from camera I get the 'dangerously low on disk space' warning and at some point -- then or later, don't know which -- the capture stops.
The duration before stopping was close to 10 hours, and the data took 113855236 K on disk, which left only 954.8 Gbytes on my 2 Tbyte -- yes, Tbyte -- external drive. The system drive had 89.95 Gbytes left at that point.
Seems to be a bug in the code checking for disk space, it appears to me.

  • Lightroom 4.3 Incorrectly gives 'critically low on disk space' errors

Lightroom 4.3 today started popping up random 'critically low on disk space' errors for the drive housing the catalog file.
The drive in question has over 500GB free.  There are no errors in Windows logs showing that OS is throwing these errors.
Very frustrating to have this error pop up every couple of minutes.
Has anyone else run into this issue, and if so, found a fix?
    -Daniel

I have the same issue with LR4.3.  The catalog is on a disk that currently has 283 GB free out of 698 GB total.
Occassionally I get the out of space message:
Ad additional problem I am having is that when I click to IMPORT photos, the Import panel is excrutiatingly slow.  Windows occassionally thinks that the program has crashed after I do something like start typing keywords to assign to the images about to be imported.  The slowness occurs before any actual import is ordered or even an import source is selected.
I don't know if these problems are related, but they are both very annoying!

  • Running critically low on disk space.

I'm getting getting frequent "Running critically low on disk space." Except I have 200GB free on the drive with the library and 95GB free on my system drive. Still happening with v2.01. Any ideas on what is going on.
    Thanks.

The photos are in the library. But the library isn't on the start-up drive, so I don't think there should be any VM on it. But I was moving photos around so may have filled up the drive. But after emptying the trash and rebooting, I had 200GB free (on a 1TB drive) and still got the low space message.
It occurred to me to rebuild the database and that seems to have stopped the message.

  • Hard Drive low on disk space - What is the process of moving B1 Server App?

The partition the SAP B1 Server App is installed on is running low on disk space. I would like to move the APP from the D:\ to a new, faster, hard disk we have installed.
What is the process for uninstalling and reinstalling the server app to a new partition.
Is there any documentation that outlines this process?
What are concerns I should have for doing this?
Any and all info is appreciated.
    John Sefton

Fine. Then Backup the Client Database from SQL Server Management Studio.
Backup the B1_SHR folder from the SAP Server.
Now uninstall SAP B1 from the Server.
Restart the Server and do a Fresh Installation of SAP B1.
Apply for New License Key. Install the License Key after you get from SAP portal.
Upgrade to the Patch similar to that of the Backuped Client DB Patch.
Now create a new company in SAP B1.
Restore the DB which was backed up.
NOTE: I suggest these operations to be done by experienced guys. If you are a SBO Customer, then I recommend you to ask your Implementation Partner to do this exercise.

Sharing to DVD I get the following alert " There was an error burning your disc.  Not enough Disk Space in Target Folder"  I have 700GB   free.  Where is this target folder located?  How can I fix this problem? This is definitely not a space problem.
Since starting with FCP X, there has been tons of issues, now that the product actually works with the exception above, makes it impossible to share the production.  Has Apple fixed this problem.  is there a knowledge base article on this?
On another note, One reason I have not purchased support on FCP X is because you sold a product that never worked for almost an entire year or more.   Now I can finally finish my project,  I cannot share it.....Really.  This has to be fixed now, I am loosing money as I typed this.
    Regards,
    Rob Harris

Just curious, why would repairing permissions, rebooting ( rebooted 2 times already today) or creating a new user possibly fix this.
I cannot create a new user, that is way too much work.  I will repair permissions again,  I repaired permissions just a few days ago. Then I will reboot, login and turn off App Nap and rerun the Share DVD.
There must be something seriously wrong with the OS if your are suggesting creating another user.   WOW!
