  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.5.2 update now available

The Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.5.2 update brings Mercury Playback Engine support for NVIDIA ‘Maximus’ configurations, where a Tesla card can work alongside a Quadro card for increased GPU processing power. The update also fixes issues which prevent the proper display of Closed Captions and the Timecode Effect, and fixes the Color Picker on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). In addition:
    • Mac: Fixed an issue where the Timecode Effect was not displayed properly when rendering/exporting to a new file (2977326)
    • Mac/Win: Fixed an issue which could cause Closed Captioning data to be displayed in the wrong location, and sometimes offscreen (2927519)
    • Mac: Fixed an issue which could cause Assert errors when enabling the display of Closed Captioning data (2977314)
    • Mac: Fixed an issue where the Color Picker did not pick the correct color (2977304, OS X 10.7 only)
    • Mac/Win: Fixed an issue which could cause the application to crash when trimming with third-party I/O hardware installed (2984420)

Please point me to where you saw this.
What I do recall is us saying that we were likely able to fix some DSLR scrubbing/playback issues in an update. We did. There was a major improvement in scrubbing/playback for DSLR files. The issue that we weren't able to fix in the update was the issue in which the decoding of some Nikon .mov files was done using QuickTime instead of the native decoders. But all that you need to do to get around that is change a file-name extension.
Ok, so maybe a fix wasnt promised for this. Maybe 3 months ago when a fix was being worked on and should be released soon, that isnt a promise.
This is like using a spare tire on a car.  Would you pay for a car and then use a small spare tire for three months on it, cuz its a workaround thats kinda simple?  Maybe thats not a relative comparison. Maybe this is extremely difficult. It was working fine in cs5 premiere tho. So I guess im just gonna have to drive around with this piece of .... spare tire until you guys decide to actually fix this problem.  I will however not be upgrading future releases if this is the way you handle bugs.
Ive had this issue since day 1 of upgrading. That was May 2nd I believe, cant remember the exact release date. Thats 6 months of waiting for a fix for this problem. Workarounds are dumb, I didnt pay for software for workarounds.

  • Looking for Premiere Pro CS5 v5.0.4 update for Elctronic download Version - not avalible in downloads but download manager keeps saying I need it and wont install

My update keeps telling me I need to update my Premiere Pro CS5 to v5.0.4 but tells me there is an error downloading. Tried to download manually and install but it only has a link for retail DVD version and I have an electronic download version. I know CS5 is no longer supported but shouldn't I at least have some where I can download this update? Thanks

that link is the only one for pre cc app updates.
is the current downloadable version cs5.04?  if yes, that would explain why there is no update for the downloadable version.  you would uninstall your cs5 and install the current download in that situation.
if the current downloadable version is not cs5.04, contact adobe for clarification, http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/service1.html

  • Why does Premiere Pro CS5 eat up space on my C drive when it conforms video files?

Hey everyone. I have Premiere Pro CS5 with the latest update installed. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a 120GB Corsair SSD drive. I have set my scratch disk video and audio previews to a different hard drive (F: drive). I have three questions:
    1. Why does Premiere eat up space on my C drive whenever it conforms the video files I import into my project?
    2. Where on my C drive can I find the folder that holds all these conformed video files that are taking up space on my C drive?
    3. How do I prevent Premiere from eating up space on my hard drive when it conforms the video files I import into my project? Is there some way to move whatever folder is eating up space on my hard drive when Premiere conforms the video files and tell Premiere to conform the video files on another hard disk so I don't lose precious space on my C drive?
Okay, that's four questions but, can some please help me on this? Thanks.
    Okay, that's five questions.

    hello,
i think you need to relocate you media  cache files to a separate drive other than your c: drive.
in the hardware forum, Harm has done a wonderful job at advising on HDD setup, i think it mentions relocation
of swap file, media cache, etc.  all which are defaulted to your c: in your user profile
after relocating to different physical drives (all without partitions) performance usually increases
Generic Guideline for Disk Setup  by harm
hope this helps til someone else answers more
    good luck...

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Crashes on Startup on Mac

    Hi,
I have installed Master Collection CS5 on a MacBook Pro (late 2009) Mac OSX 10.6..4 (4GB RAM) with all Apple updates applied as at 26.8.2010  , Photoshop & Illustrator work fine , Premiere Pro & Soundbooth CS5 repeatedly crash when starting up & have never worked since installing.
I have lodged this problem with Adobe Tech Support.
One typical  error message is "/Scully64/shared/adobe/MediaCore/ASL/Foundation/Make/Mac/../..Src/Di r ectoryRegistry.cpp-283" on launching Premiere Pro Cs5r aniother might be " No client name has encountered an error" or "Premiere Pro has encountered an error"
I have uninstalled CS5 , used the CS5 Cleanup tool , reinstalled Master Collection CS5 (several times) the only existing  Admin user account , repaired Mac hard drive Disk Permissions ( in Disk Utility) , & checked /repaired any Font errors/duplications all with no luck.
Does anyone have an answer ?
    Thanks,
    Rick

I don't recognize those error messages, but you should try installing the recent Premiere Pro update, which fixes several crashing problems.
When you have updated Premiere Pro CS5, let us know whether your problem is fixed.

  • Fix for crash in After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5 when Joesoft Hear audio enhancer installed

After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5 both can crash due to a conflict with the Joesoft Hear audio enhancer.
We've just gotten confirmation from Joesoft that they've released a beta version of Hear that doesn't conflict with After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro CS5. We're recommending that our customers who also use Hear install the 1.0.5b2 (build 490) beta version of Hear.
Let us know on this forum thread whether this solution works for you. We on the After Effects and Premiere Pro teams will monitor this thread for feedback, and we'll make sure that the folks at Joesoft get the information that they need, too.
When reporting back, be sure to let us know whether you've installed the Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) update and After Effects CS5 (10.0.1) update.

After 2 days trying to get AE and Premiere past the mediacore initialization message, I finally stumbled on this little message.  Updating Hear definitely solves the problem!

i've been using Premiere Pro for about a year and a half with no trouble, no crashes that i can remember.   I updated to 5.0.4 when it came out and experienced no problems.
I have not made any changes to my system (drivers, programs, etc.) since the last time i worked with Premiere Pro with no trouble.  The only  difference is that i generated approx. 52GB of new video files (mov. uncompressed 32bit 640x480 resolution) that i was beginning to edit in to a music video.
My current problem is:: there is absolutely no playback of video in 5.0.4.   not in the tiny project window preview,  not in the source preview, and not in the timeline/canvas window.   when i push PLAY, the button turns into a square STOP button, but nothing happens.   this is independent of project or file type.  The project i was working on when playback stopped is using uncompressed 640x480 32bit Quicktime files and one 44khz/16bit .AIFF file.   as a quick doublecheck, I just added a 640x480 Apple Intermediate Codec file and it also will not play back.   I opened older projects and none of them will playback.
My problem started while i was working on a project.  I was working on the project for probably an hour and a half with no trouble.  Then it seemed to get a bit sluggish and i could hear the HD churning a little more.   After rendering out a short section (just under 10 seconds), PPro did not play back the just rendered (now greenline) section.  Immediate playback of rendered material was the default behavior, and this was the first time ever that the just rendered section did not play back.   I then discovered that no video would play back at all--in any of the windows.   I can scrub through all the video without any trouble--all the frames are there.
I shut down PPro, & restarted.  No change.   I restarted my computer.  No change.
Realizing that the problem was likely related to a lack of space on my data drive,  i deleted approx. 500GB of files off my 2 TB drive, leaving just under a 1/3 of it free.  i checked the drive for errors, and defragmented it.  Premiere Pro still wouldn't play any file from any project.
The files are fine, they will playback anywhere else (several different file types involved in different projects).  The files are compatible with Premiere Pro (uncompressed VGA resolution Quicktime .mov), i was editing on the timeline with them for hours before all video playback stopped.   All other Adobe programs  (After Effects, Photoshop work fine).
I tried to find an answer/solution on these forums, unsuccessfully.   After uninstalling PPro and reinstall (did not help), and entire Suite uninstall, Adobe Clean, and reinstall,  neither version 5.0.0 or 5.0.4 will play video --the no playback problem has persisted.
I was running out of HD space --i had less room than i thought -- down to about 7% of free space, a bone-headed move on my part.  I'm not  surprised that playback performance got compromised due to lack of space.   But i'm shocked that the problem is persisting.   Fortunately, i had just backed up my entire system the day before.  (i've backed up many times before and this never affected PPro performance)
i tried to "CLEAN" the media cache for the sequence but it had no effect  (in searching the forums, i saw somebody else have their 'crashing Premiere Pro' problem solved by hitting this button).  I just took a look in the user/application support/adobe/common/5.0 to look at the "Media Cache" folder and the "Media Cache Files" folder.   Neither of them are empty, even after hitting the CLEAN cache button in the main preferences 'Media' settings window.   I don't know if this is the correct behavior or not.   (i'd expect a "clean" command to empty the folder, but i'm not the programmer)
This does not appear to be the ATI/5.0 problem that so many Mac users suffered (i was lucky to never have that problem).    Again, i've never had any problems with Premiere Pro over the last year and a half, until working on this latest project with the Hard Drive very low on space.   I'm 99.9% positive that's at the heart of the issue.
I don't understand why a clean reinstall did not help in this regard.  The problem is clearly PPro specific.   I found one topic in the forum where someone else experienced this same "no video playback" problem, but there was never follow-up from the user saying whether or not his problem was solved (or what was done to correct the problem).
I'd love to get some help--- seems to be a very rare issue, but right now, i can do no video editing.  btw,  i started a new project as well and imported a .mov file -- same problem, no video playback.
the weird thing is that i can actually still edit video.  i just rearranged my timeline assets and rendered out a minute-long quicktime (Apple Intermediate Codec) .mov and it looks and plays as it should.    This is really weird.  I'm baffled -- there must be some way to fix this.   I don't want to have to go back to Final Cut,  certainly not when i've already paid for Create Suite 5 Production Premium and EVERYTHING works except for video playback in PrPro.
thanks in advance for your help

hello.   hey, thanks very much for writing back.  i got some good info with a search or two.  (info about what regedit is and what corresponds to it in OS X -- regedit allows you to edit "preference" keys for individual programs,  OSX's equivalent for these keys are the .plists in User & System: Preferences and Application Support)
what i ended up doing was uninstalling Premiere Pro (not the suite, just PPro).   Then i deleted a few preference files:
    from User /Preferences/Adobe:
    com.adobe.AdobePremierePro.plist
    com.Adobe.Premiere Pro.5.0.plist
    and from System Preferences:
the file:  Adobe Premiere Pro Prefs
    and..
    /.../Premiere Pro/5.0/...
AMEPrefs.xml     (i noticed that there's also a preference file in Media Encoder's own folder so i didn't sweat this one)
    Debug Database.txt
    Placeholder Preset.epr
    PostEncodeCmds.pref
    PresetCache.xml
    Trace Database.txt
    NOTE:
of course i don't know if deleting any files beyond the 2 .plist files in User Prefs was necessary, but...  it seems to have worked.
I then reinstalled Premiere Pro CS5, and fired up an old project and i've got playback of HD and DV files, and snappy editing and rendering,  so hopefully i'm good to go.   I'm just going to stick with v5.0.0 because i actually don't remember ever having any trouble with it, and i don't remember v5.0.4 adding anything i was 'missing' or 'needed'
hopefully, this thread will be useful for any future folks that run into trouble - and it's got a solution for both Windows and OS X
    happy editing,
    peace

  • Why does my entire computer freeze while opening or using After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5?

Just built a computer to meet all requirements for Adobe, Autodesk 3ds Max, and UDK, for school.

Graphics Card - EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX480 - DirectX11 - CUDA - OpenCL Support - PhysX Technology - OpenGL 4.1 (so says the box it came in; but if I'm not mistaken I think the command prompt had shown OpenGL 3 or 3.2)
Disc Driver - LG DVD/CD RW... It is an OEM, Windows claims it is updated.
I use an external component - USB Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard 2000.
I have, as far as software goes...
    Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Adobe Creative Suite 5, student version or what have you.
         - I do have several plugins installed as well for After Effects only.
    Autodesk 3ds Max 2012
-I have several maxscripts as well as a couple plugins for 3ds Max.
    UDK 2-2012 & 3-2012
    NVIDIA PhysX Lab 1.1
    NVIDIA Texture Tools 2
    NVIDIA plugin for Photoshop
    xNormal
    ConTEXT
    UnCodeX
    Quicktime
    AVG Free
    Malwarebytes
    7-Zip
    Java
    Sculptris
As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.
Again, to those who replied, your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • How do I join multiple (short) audio clips into one single long audio clip in Premiere Pro CS5?

    Hello,
The question is in the title but I'm wondering how I can join multiple (short) audio clips into one single long audio clip in PP CS5.5.  I put all my short clips right next to each other and selected all of them to see what options are available by right clicking and using the toolbar options at the top.  The closest that I got was to nest the sequence, but that's not what I really want.
I'd like to merge all the short clips into one single (long) audio file to use under the video.
Thoughts are welcome and  greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Melvin

O.K. This is kind of fundamental and you will need to learn up on this fully ...but for now...
Make sure you have the WAB ( work area bar )covering the length of the audio clips. ( You do not need to select them)
Go to the File Menu> Export Media
You will be given all the Export Options.  Choose Wave File
Select option for Export Work Area.
Choose where to export the file to ( HD location)
    follow your nose from there....

BTW - Why are you taking the audio to Audition anyway? What are you going to do to it.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Dynamic Link not working as part of Production Premium CS5

I ran into a situation whereby I recently reinstalled my Production Premium CS 5 onto a new computer and when trying to run the Dynamic Link out of Premiere PRO CS 5 to create a new After Effects composition, After Effects tried to start up but then crashed with the error that Production Premium was needed.
Yet, I had Production Premium CS5.
(Note:  The crash didn't occur when I simply tried to use Dynamic Link without anything selected in my project or timeline - but the moment I had a clip in my timeline selected to work on it, the dynamic link would not work as covered above.)
In checking around the forums I found various answers to this problem such as rebooting the computer, reformatting hard drives and/or whatever.  This all may be correct.
However, as I just went through that nightmare, I was not anxious to do that again.  So, I called Adobe and the following solution solved the matter in 5 minutes:
    1. Close all your other Adobe applications such as After Effects.
    2. Open up Premiere Pro CS5 and then deactivate it by going to HELP>DEACTIVATE and then Permanently Deactivate.
3.Close the application and restart Premiere Pro CS5.
4.Then do the same to Activate it.
    5. Have your serial number handy and plug it in when prompted.
Solved it right away and worked beautifully.
Not to say there couldn't be more complicated situations, but the above worked and the simpler the better is good for me. And I thought I would post this in case anyone else ran into this problem.

    Thanks for posting your solution.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Dynamic Linking Broken

I have a project in Premiere Pro CS5.5. Brough in all my greenscreen footage and did my edits. When I got picture lock from client I "replace with after effects comp" and did my keying in AE. This worked great throughout the project until yesterday when doing some final tweaks. Premiere would not load all the media, it got to 222 items reamaing and stalled, for hours! Then I moved the folder where all my graphics where and skipped the files when loading premiere and premiere then opened. I relinked all my graphics just fine, but when it came to relinking my AE dynamic link projects, got the spinning beach ball. I figured I would just let it spin overnight and see what happened in the am. 12 hours later it was still spinning. This is very frusterating and I can't think what I did to mess it up or if it's a dynamic link problem. I may have opened and edited the AE project without premiere open, maybe thats what messed it up. Any thoughts?
    Mac Pro 8-core 3ghz
    12 GB ram
    6TB fibre channel drive
    Mac OS 10.7.3
Adobe Production Premium CS5.5 (all up to date)

I've heard of other issues with DL from AE, but not this one... the problem I'm used to seeing is that you've got the wrong footage, and that's usually fixed by unlinking and relinking, which you've done. I rarely use AE myself, and when I do, I've generally found that I get better results by NOT using DL... but I know it should work, so perhaps someone else will have some answers for you. As long as you have the AE project still, you can always just render out your comps as lossless AVIs with UT or Lagarith and then import those to PrPro and replace the DL clips...

  • Looking to build a pc to use premiere pro cs5

i'm looking to have a pc built so that i can use to edit in premiere pro cs5.  here are some specs i received.  i wanted to post these to see what folks thought.
    MOTHERBOARD - GIGABYTE GA-890XA-UD3 Socket AM3/ AMD 790X/ SATA3
    PROCESSOR - AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Thuban 3.3GHz, 3.7GHz Turbo
    MEMORY - C628-9X Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 8G(2x4G) DDR3 160
    SSD DRIVE - OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE90 2.5" 90GB SATA II
    HARD DRIVE - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS SATA 1TB 72
    VIDEO CARD - EVGA GeForce GTX470 1280MB SuperClocked 625Mhz
POWER SUPPLY - Antec EarthWatts EA650 650 Watt ATX12V Power Supply
    OS - Microsoft GFC-00599 Windows 7 Home Prem 64-bit
    BLU-RAY BURNER - Pioneer BDR-206BK 12X Blu-ray Writer SATA Black
after reading different posts, it sounded like having a system built from scratch was better than buying an off the shelf computer.  my plan was to store the os and applications on the ssd drive.  is a third HD preferred?  more memory?  i am using sony's HDR-CX350 AVCHD camera.
from reading posts in the forums, there are a lot of experience folks out there.  appreciate hearing from you!  thanks!

I suggest you start by reading the list of articles that appear when you press the overview tab at the top of the page.
Instead of spending money on an SSD, use the savings from a conventional 7200 SATA disk to get an Intel i7-9xx instead of AMD. Your PSU is pretty weak with a GTX 470, 850 W seems much better. Increase memory to 12 GB (3 x 4GB) and add a third disk. Use Win7 64 Pro instead of Home.
AMD is too slow for AVCHD because of the lacking SSE4.1+ instructions. Look at the PPBM5 Benchmark to see how AMD's do in comparison to Intel.
Look at some posts here to see what a decent system is.

  • CANNOT IMPORT FCP  .XML FILE INTO PREMIERE PRO CS5

    Hi,

Edited in      :-final cut pro 7
Error            :- failed  to import .xml file into premiere pro cs5
I tried  to import the .xml file into premiere CS5 ,it asked for the media files  to relink .whn i linked the .mp4 files it showed the  error messege "The  selected file cannot be linked becouse it has 2 audio channel(s) and  the clip was created with 1 audio channel(s).
then i tried to relink the .mov instead of .mp4 file (which i  used in final cut pro on apple machine)i got  the error "Codec missing  or unavailable"
what should i do???..i almost done all the  editing in final cut pro and i bought the adobe coz i thought i can  finish all the pending FCP projects in Premier Pro..??

What is the CODEC in your MOV file(s)? MOV is but a "wrapper," like AVI. This ARTICLE will give you some background. It could be that you just need the proper CODEC, or it could be that it is a Mac-only CODEC, and then you will need for the producer to Export in another CODEC, that is PC-compatible.
This ARTICLE will give you some background on CODEC's, in general.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Quicktime Import Problem

    Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem importing Quicktime .MOV files into Premiere Pro CS5.  When I import .mov files (I've tried several; some I've created myself from AE5, others are purchased from third party libraries) the file shows up in the PPro CS5 project bin, but can't be previewed by dragging into the Source Monitor (system spins for 1-2 minutes, then PPro Source Monitor just shows a gray backround, no video present).  If I drag the file to the timeline, the system will again spin for 1-2 minutes and then the Program Monitor will just display a black video frame.  If I try to play the timeline, the audio will play (if present), but the Program Monitor will show black with occasional "flashes" of a frame from the .mov file.  If I try to render the timeline nothing really happens except the estimate time to finish increases with no end in sight (3 minute clip was showing 20+ hours remaining before I killed it).
On the same machine, I can view the .mov files just fine using Quicktime 7.6.8, AE 5, and even PPro CS4.
I am running Windows 7 x64, 9GB memory, Core i7 Processor, Multiple HDD's (per Adobe recommendations), and a nVidia GFX740 card.  I've updated PPro CS5, Quicktime, and nVidia drivers all to the latest version this week.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Any ideas of how to fix this problem?
    /BILLW

Although you speak sooth, it is I believe rather impulsive to think that the simple answer was meant to be an evangelistic approach for using .mov in final production.
I only edit final productions in native formats or professional intermediates.
But, how about doing rough storyboard edits where you are burning the many endless midnight hours (hmm, like now maybe, and I just ran out of coffee and smokes?!) fleshing out a story or script, or knocking out an animatic or honing in on the details out of a cinematic script - and while that creative candle burns, you are rapidly pulling together whatever material in whatever format you can find to rough together your ideas before you lose that thought - often over the weekend for a presentation to investors or some such on a Monday.  Sometimes, my friend, all you have is what you get. And when I am creatively doing a pitch or preparing for an on-set walkthrough or a meeting with pre-production, and all I have are  .mov's from whereever thay came or a crappy home office scan or a repro of an old 16mm film of a POW camp that someone copied onto VHS by projecting it off a painted concrete block wall and then shot that with an old VHS camera, and whatever 20 generations later you are handed a .mov of that to put together a final script concept while the originals get dug up.....My Friend, you have to be able to rapidly put your thougths and concepts together without limitations to your equipment and you don't have time to mess around with codecs you don't have when you are in a pinch.  And some of us aren't mathematical codec wizards either -- we just need to see something and see it now.
After all, this is Planet Earth we are living on isn't it?  And rare is the idyllic, calm, cool, breezy day absent from the pounding heartbeat of production!
And in those desperate moments, there have been a few times I will confess I needed to pop a .mov file (from wherever its birth may have been I will never know) into premiere and it wouldn't go.  And in a rush like that with no sleep, I don't care.  I ran it though QT Pro. I guess that makes me a sinner from Arcturus.
From a professional point of view, there are many ways to use premiere.  Like I said, often preparing for a final edit in a production house with an editing team on an Avid or whatever system.   And on the creative side, I use it often to develop my scripts or my projects before I walk on set to direct or produce or have a meeting with the pre-production crew.  And there are many others including of course, the beloved, finished, polished edits that go straight to broadcast -- which premiere does a great job.
For a final production, .mov, nope. (Although I have had animation houses swear by the .mov animation.)
    Feel a little better now?
    Cheers!
