Your TouchSmart Experience??

I'm considering purchasing a TouchSmart PC and would appreciate your experience on some uses:
We presently use Vista Media Center a lot and the family is comfortable using a lot of its features.  I understand that TouchSmart provides access to many of the same features.
1.  Have you found that using TouchSmart is better than using the native MCE screens?
2.  Are there features in MCE that are not available from TouchSmart?
2a.    If so, is it easy to access MCE from touchsmart to access the unique MCE features?
2b.    Do you find it annoying to switch between TouchSmart and MCE (or other PC functions outside TouchSmart?)
3.  Does the TouchSmart calendar provide a way to import calendar information from Outlook?
4.  Is the i504 adequate for processing TouchSmart / multitouch / etc., or is the step up to the better processor and graphics of 506 and 800 series necessary?
5.  I read in the forum that TouchSmart can't access music (and I therefore assume photos / videos) from network storage.  Can it access from a Windows Home Server?  from an attached USB drive?
Thanks for any responses!!

yeah, you can basically run Media Center components directly from the command line, for example that link that rasterblaster mentions was something that i have now setup at home...
So for example to load up the TV directly from the command line you run;
C:\Windows\EHOME\EHSHELL.EXE /HOMEPAGE:VideoFullscreen.XML /PUSHSTARTPAGE:TRUE
So you can add this to a Tile and it will be made available as a Tile in Touchsmart.
I found it runs ok when Touchsmart and MC TV are running together, however if you load up another app like a game or maybe Word or something then TV may begin to suffer with jolting picture refreshes - very annoying.
As for music stored on a share, i'm eargerly waiting for this to be made available - i hope they can incorporate WMP library into Touchsmart Music somehow, (as described in the documentation) this way you can optionally use either WMP or Touchsmart without having to maintain both, if they can do this then this would be a major thumbs up for me....
Another thumbs up would be to get the Mic option working or made available in the Touchsmart Notes app, this would be real cool!

  • Your heat experiences with the MBP 13 2012

Looking to buy a new machine, actually I already picked one, I'm going for a MPB 13.3inch i7 (2012).
Even though, I read a lot of people saying around the internet, that this machine tends to heat a LOT.
I want to know your personal experience with the mbp13 (2012 please, i7 experience would be even better). All kind of people welcome to share, from web-browsing like facebook, to word processing and even video edition or gamers (if you managed to play something on this ).

Good, because I have the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch Non-Retina. I would say this computer really doesn't get hot at all. With your average Internet browsing with nothing else opened this computer is relatively cool and the fan is quiet. If you have multiple applications opened such as Safari, iTunes, Notes, and iPhoto for example, it gets a little warm but the fan is still just as quiet. Now video editing/gaming. When I am editing a YouTube video or playing a game (depending on how graphic intensive/big the game is) alone with nothing else opened, the computer gets fairly warm and the fan is louder. Now if I am editing a video/gaming and have other applications opened the fan can get really loud and the computer can get really hot. When I say 'really hot' I mean REALLY hot, because this is made out of aluminum the outside surface of the MacBook Pro can get even more hot then the inside. Keep in mind that the heat is different depending on what surface I'm on because on my pants, bed, couch, etc. it would be hotter but on a table it would be substantially cooler.
    Hope this helps,

  • HT5071 If you have had a book published through IBooks Author, what has been your overall experience with the process and the company?

I am interested in publishing a children's book through IAuthor.  What has been your experience with the company?  As a first time author, what pitfall should I avoid? Can I learn about the terms of the contract before entering into an agreement?

Naturally. Once you apply for an account, you'll get the contract, which you are then free to accept or not.

  • Splitting BC tasks between 2 teams - your advices/experiences please

    Hello dear Basis friends,
I am in need of your valuable advices /  experiences.
Our company is in the process of remodeling the IT department.
Following this process, they want to split the operational part of BC tasks from the project/architecture part. Up to now, our group (the BC team) is the only one with deep knowledge of the Basis side from SAP. The operation responsibles have asked us to provide documentation on problems that could happen on SAP / Oracle to not rely on heavy experts to do the day-to-day tasks(SIC). They also want to suppress our accesses from all QA and PRD systems.
No need to say that we are not very reluctant about this situation.
What are your thoughts about this ? Do you have experience of company where such a model of managing BC tasks works ? To the contrary, if you fell it does not fit into this type of organization, what good arguments can you offer me to defend that point of view in front of managers (not tech people).
    Thank you for your time.

Yes, I use OnyX because it runs them at times I have scheduled it to do so. 10.4.0 or later runs them automatically, if the computer is on and idle at 1AM, which isn't normal for many people so running them with an app can be good if you leave your machine running for days or weeks at a time. That said if you shut down your machine down every night there is no need to because the tasks will be run at boot each morning.

  • Tell me your YMC experiences

Disabling the YMC service has been a useful fix for many problems on the Yoga 13 (and possibly other Yoga models).  This worked great for me.
The interesting thing is that I have read that for some people, after disabling the YMC service, their Yoga no longer disables the keyboard/trackpad when flipped around into tablet or tent mode.  For others, including me, the keyboard/trackpad still disables correctly when flipping around.
I would like to hear from users that have had either experience to try to determine why the keyboard disable feature doesn't work for some but works for others, after disabling the YMC service.
Please post a reply about whether that works for you or not, and maybe a little about your configuration.  If you haven't tried disabling YMC, it is safe to experiment with - if you don't like the results you can always simply re-enable it.
    Thanks,
    lmader

I just setup another one of these that I had to disable YMC on because it was causing performance issues. It is connected to a Lenovo USB 3.0 dock that is pushing two 27" monitors. The laptop lid was closed with the lid power option set to 'Do Nothing' while on Power. It was extremly sluggish with major delays, as soon as I disabled YMC it ran perfect.
Is YMC also causing DPTF to affect the processor speed when in a closed lid state?
Wow, that is a new one, but it definitely sounds like the same thing.  You certainly don't need ymc if you are docked so  that seems like a good solution. Some people prefer to disable DPTF in BIOS, especially those that have a system where the keyboard won't disable in tablet mode, but I don't have this issue and prefer disabling ymc.

  • Worried about T61 Shipping... Share your *US* Experiences?

I've been reading the other thread about the T61 shipping and am definitely NOT pleased with other people's experience. It must be a pain to go through, sorry for those that went through it.
I just wanted other experiences, as far as those who live in the US. I live in the northeast US, specifically New York. I'm worried that I'm going to end up with a 3-5 week wait time from the day I order my laptop to the day I actually receive it. As of now, I'm all set to order through my company (for the corporate discount), and can't wait to use the laptop. However, I'm having second doubts on whether or not I should get a T61 because of the excessive wait. Since I'll be ordering through my company, do you think Lenovo CSR's will give me priority? I don't know whether or not this will help, and I doubt it - but I was just curious.
Are there any other fellow US T61 owners who ordered through Lenovo recently? Can you please share you experiences, whether it is good or bad? I'd like to hear them both.
I most likely will get a system with the following specs:
    Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 2.4 GHz, 3MBL2
    OS: Windows Vista Home Basic
    14.1" WXGA+ TFT
    nVIDIA Quado NVS 140M
    1GB (1 DIMM)
UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
    120GB HD, 5400 RPM
    CDRW/DVD-ROM Combo (no DVDRW)
    Thinkpad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe
    Integrated Bluetooth PAN
    6 cell Li-on Battery

I purchased a customized thinkpad t61p on June 7 and the computer shipped on June 12 by express mail (I payed for ground shipping so that was a nice surprise). I received it two days later on June 14 in the morning. Extremely fast build and ship time so I am very happy. By the way I live in Raleigh, NC.

For many its a dream , for others looking around, its a sign of becoming envious one of these days, what was it like for you when you got your first laptop, and what kind was it? What was the reaction of others around you when you had it out in public for the first time?

  • Aperture 1.0 -- your performance experiences?

    Hi guys,
how's your feeling for the performance of Aperture?
Here on my Dual G5 2.7GHz PowerMac it's really reeeaallyyy REALLY slow!
For example: I have a 3000x2000 raw image and even the loop tool, when moved over the full screen image on my 2nd display, is not realtime. I move the mouse to move the loop but the loop moves app. 0,5s after I moved the mouse.
I get roughly the same delay in response from the GUI when I move sliders like the Shadow/Highlight or Exposure or Saturation or or or any other GUI element.
Has Apple really meant to be this software so slow on their almost fastest machine? Are we all forced to buy quad-core (dual dualcore) PowerMacs?
    disappointed,
    Stefan.

For example: I have a 3000x2000 raw image and even

    Hi Stefan,
Exactly same machine here (with 6.5GB RAM, but should not make a difference, as according to Activity Monitor not used) also using the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL and two displays and I do not have this effect. I would not call Aperture a speed demon, but is fast enough on the PM, on the PowerBook it is slightly painful.
Have you run the usual checks (repair permissions, hardware check etc.). Also I had severe trouble using Aperture with a wireless mouse, with the wired mighty one it is much more responsive.
    Cheers,

  • What are your Refurb experiences?

Hi All. I noticed the good deals on refurbs on the late 2008/early 2009 MBP's now that the new line up has come out. These refurbs look like great deals. Good prices and you still get both the 9400m and 9600m GPU's.
My question is: Can anyone let me know about their experiences with Mac Refurbs? I have a late 2008 MBP and love it - I am trying to find out for a friend who is looking to make the switch to Mac.
    Would be interested to hear.
    Thanks
    M.

I bought a 17 inch refurb a few years back. It came with an ill-fitting lid, missing the "K" in Macbook Pro, and had a scratch on it. Apple was shocked and quickly replaced the machine no questions asked.
The replacement had ENDLESS problems, but after 10 months, 4 logic boards, a kensington lock slot replacement, and a optical drive replacement all under warranty, I convinced them that they should just mail me a brand new machine for my troubles. They did. The new machine was 2 years newer and came with a "clean-slate" warranty that started again as if it were purchased.
I have just bought another refurb macbook pro (15 this time) and it has been lovely except for some graphics card, dual display, and sleep issues. However, this appears to be related to 10.5.7 software as opposed to a hardware problem as many are reporting such issues. Worst case, they will fix it for me under warranty or replace the machine.
In spite of my troubles I would recommend a refurbished machine because applecare is so fantastic. I just saved $1050 on this machine that even smells brand new! haha...

  • Your personal experience and opinions on MATE (Gnome 2 fork)

    Hİ,
What do you guys think about mate, depending on your personal experince. Is it ready for daily usage, or is there too many litte things that you should worry abut, or what else?

Thanks Tom for the repsonse, appreciate it
I'm going to wait to buy FCP X until an update becasue I really feel if it is an issue, Apple will address that
(I've lost "saves" in FCP 7 also, not often at all, but it has happened - so this issue may not be as bad or as large as it appears if you do a comparison)

  • Your iBook experience: readability?

I do not (yet) have an iPad & am one of those older & avid readers who enjoys the sensory experience of a real book -- the feel of the pages, the sense of connectivity of an old book passed from one user to another, etc. But at the same time I can see the value of one handed page turning & all the rest of what electronic book readers offer.
So I was quite interested in a Retrevo article that pointed out some potential reasons the iPad might not be the "Kindle killer" some say it will be, especially the comparison of 'E ink' displays vs. the LCD color display of the iPad.
Thus, I would like to know if any of you iPad iBook users have noticed any problems like eye strain or difficulty reading iBooks in bright sunlight, or especially if you have both an iPad & a reader using E ink technology, how you would compare reading books using one vs. the other.

Last night I was up until 2 a.m. reading Blackstone's Commentaries (books which would individually weigh a heck of a lot more 1.5 pounds!). It was a joy. I had also purchased the iPad Case as poster sandrift did, and it makes a difference for me, especially when reading into the wee hours. I have had no eye strain.
I had reformatted the Commentaries somewhat and used the calibre software to convert it to the ePub format, made a digital cover for it, added it to the iTunes Library (where it was automatically added to the iBooks catalog as a selection), selected it in iBooks once added, re-synced the iPad, and there it was. I love the iPad! I'll probably give the Kindle to a niece or nephew.
Speaking of the Kindle, I have never had a problem with it. It has always been readable and stable. I never read in direct sunlight, so I have nothing to contribute there. I always read in the shade, and the iPad is great outdoors for that.
I do, however, like to see two pages at once. I like the feel and look of it. And that's one reason why I bought an iPad. It feels like a book, and I love books! If publishers go this route, it could save them an enormous amount of cost in printing and distribution, especially with college textbooks. It would be less expensive for students and publishers both. It could save a lot of publishing companies down the road, and not a few jobs, though the loggers and mills might feel squeezed initially. I, for one, hope the digital approach catches on. They'll always be a use for wood and paper, and books will continue to be made. I have loaded many books onto the iPad, but I still have all my books and read them when my wife and I sit in the library, or if I'm researching something and need several books open at once. The iPad, for me, is a convenient alternative when I'm going to read something at length, and allows me to jump on the internet for information I may want while reading. It just opens up new ways of doing things. That's what I like about it, in addition to it's readability. I believe it is pointing to the future.
    Regards,
    Rube

  • Please post your positive experiences with Leopard, and only positive

In a board of people looking for help, it is important to have balance. When we see hundreds of people complaining about the software, it makes people think that Leopard is one buggy system. I can say happily it is not.
    What works:

    Epson Stylus R220
Firewire hard drives by OWC and Cooldrives
    BBEdit 7.1.4
Filemaker 8.5v2 (as long as web services aren't used, but you can export to HTML)

*What I would like to mention, is that this is business critical software, and we use about a dozen heavily relational custom databases, for everything from client management, form generation, timekeeping/billing etc. Not only is it heavily Relational and interrelated to other apps, it also relies heavily on both internal (FMPs own) and external (AppleScript and Terminal) scripting, some of it very sophisticated. I was very concerned about portability to the new system, and maintained dual information on existing equipment. We have had ZERO issues, so far.
Quicken 2003 (I don't use the online stuff at all, so that is ?)
Appleworks 6 (still used for legacy documents that have yet to be ported over to Word)

  • Linux & learning software. your tips/tricks/experiences w/ studying.

    Hey everyone,
I'm a college/university student and find myself using my laptop a lot for studying lately. I use it mainly as a substitute for pen and paper so I'm wondering how I could make even better use of the PC/laptop while learning.
Enter thread. I'm really curious as to how you use/used linux while learning/studying.
    Did you
    * find learning software that generally helped you a lot with your learning experience?
    * develop a particular organizational system for your documents?
Or maybe you found a very satisfying way to document lectures with LaTeX/OpenOffice and/or keep backups of all your documents?
One thing I found very useful over the last weeks is Dropbox. I always have 3 automatically synchronized copies of my documents (one on the homeserver/PC, one on my laptop and one on the Dropbox servers).
Personally, I'm studying law and when I was planning on using MS Windows I found that there exists a lot of probably very useful software. Among them a commercial application that would create a virtual filing system for documents that you could even automate to a certain extent (it could file with dates, field of law, name of lecture/professor et al). Another application would let you create virtual file/index cards, keep track of whether of not you learned them, when you learned them, if you got the answer right and it would also tell you when best to learn older cards again.
I never got to really test those apps because I didn't have a laptop back then.
Later I forgot about them and these days I just want to use (arch) linux as I'm so comfortable with it.
That's it from me for now. I'll try to find out if there are linux equivalents of the depicted software. If you already know some don't hesitate to tell me
TL;DR: What's your experience with using a laptop/PC to help with studying or working? Did you find/write any software you'd think others might find useful for learning?
    Regards,
    demian

I love learning languages and I have the following workflow:
I use an application called Anki. It is a spaced repetition software (SRS) that helps you remembering things. It has a nice community and the software itself is very effective. I think every student who has to remember for a long time what he learned (language learners, law or medical students for example) would find it extremely useful.
When I'm travelling by public transport I study my new material, make notes about it on my Android phone etc. I can keep my phone in sync with my desktop computer easily with Dropbox. I put the new material into Anki when I get home. I record the grammar points I studied in a LibreOffice spreadsheet and I also have a list of the grammar points I want to learn next. I always do my Anki repetition before putting in new grammar or vocab.
With this workflow for example I have learned more than 3000 Japanese characters in a little less than 5 months and I have no problem remembering them. I was also able to learn and remember thousands of words in a relatively short time and study grammar much much more effectively than I would have done in a normal language course.

  • Appreciated if someone can share your good data modeling tips/experience!

Note: we don't want to read SAP Help links and we are tired of reading and understand SAP Help links, just share your own experience of good data modeling tips to improve the data load and query performance.
We will give reward points and thanks in advance!

One more (no giving away any more golden eggs)..
Remember that BW validation is referential integrity and that R/3 is dynpro integrity
Remember this when using compound info objects (ever wondered why some info obejcts that you would consider absolutely essential are not in content cubes..)
    Think about the following scenario..
Does R/3 let you save a billing document without passing it through accounting?
    Can that process fail?
Can it fail because the customer doesn't exist in Accounting?
Now imagine you have put 0CUST_COMPC (Customer company code) into your Sales Info cube - and have validation switched ON for SID checking
As soon as that SD billing document comes down the line - infopackage failure
    Next scenario..
Can you save a purchase order with a blank material..?
Then fancy putting 0MAT_PLANT on your purchasing cube?
Even with validation switched off you are going to have a SID failure on upload (Plant filled - material initial - SID doesn't exist and never will do)
