YouTube and iMovie

How can I capture a video from YouTube and use it as a clip in iMovie?
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

youtube does not allow downloads. google video does. however, if you get the video, turn it into a quicktime movie, then drag and drop it onto you iMovie.

  • YouTube and iMovie Trailer Music Rights (email from Google)

I did a movie trailer using iMovie '11 Movie Trailer template and uploaded it to YouTube, via iMovie.
The trailer is starting to get popular, prompting Google to email me and ask for documentation showing that I have the right to use the music that is in the trailer/video.
Can anyone help me with this or advise on how I should proceed? Does Apple say anything about this?

  • Is there a difference between iMovie '11 and iMovie HD?

Just getting started with trying to learn how to edit a video.  Also, is '11 short for 2011? In other words, if I referred to "iMovie 2011" would I be talking about something that actually exists?  I guess HD means High Definition.  What do you call something that is NOT HD?  Low def?  Regular Def?  The introduction to "iMovie HD"manual refers to "Magic iMovie"  Does the word Magic have special meaning, the way it does in reference to a mouse (mighty or magic being different)?  The   manual keeps referring to "the latest" but the copyright date at the back is 2005.  This makes me wonder if there is a more recent version of this manual.  Is there a place on the apple website to check on what the latest version is?  What is the Product I am asking abouit?  I don't think it is iMac, iPhone, iS 5 or None.  But those are the only choices I see below here.  Why is there not a choice of "iMovie"?  Or iLife?

more questions: is a "project" the same thing as a "movie"?
A Project is a movie you are making. You can use the clips from one or more events in a project. You can also use photos from iPhoto or Aperture or the Finder, and you can use Music from iTunes. When you "finish" a project, you use the SHARE menu to execute all your edits and create a file that can be played where you want it, in the size you want it. Even after you Share a project, you can go back and edit it some more if you like, but then you would need to Share it again.
Or is it a "project" while you create it and then it becomes a "movie:" after you finish it?
A movie is the result of your Sharing the project as I mentioned above.
This is something the Apple manual writers assume everyone already knows but I do not.  What is a Cache and how it is different from a Library?
You shouldn't really need to understand caches and libraries to use iMovie. The Library is a section of your hard drive that you don't generally need to go to. It holds a bunch of files that are used by the system.
A cache is a temporary place to hold something that you might need right away. For example, Let's say you are editing the first five seconds of a clip. It takes time to go out and get the clip off the disk drive and bring it into memory so you can edit it. A cache might be used, say, to save some time by going ahead and bringing in the whole clip (not just the first 5 seconds) and maybe the next clip too. Another example. You want a glass of milk. So do you go to the store and buy a glass of milk? No. You buy a gallon of milk and put it in the refrigerator. You drink your glass of milk. When you want another glass, you go to the cache (the refrigerator) not the store. The iMovie App handles all this behind the scenes so you don't have to worry about it.
Clip seems on the surface obvious (a short section of continous video/audio that is a building block for a movie) but as I think about it, I wonder.....It is BOTH audio and video?  or EITHER?  If a movie contained only one clip wouold it be called a clip or a movie?
The best way to understand clips is that it is a unit of video from the time you press record on your camera until the time you press stop. Ususally a clip is from 5 seconds to 20 seconds, but if you are recording a convert, a single clip might be two hours.   A clip is imported into an Event. A clip, or a portion of a clip, can be used in a project. It becomes a movie when you share the project. Could you take one clip and make a project from it with no editing? Sure.
Usually a camcorder will record both audio and video. You can, however, use only the audio or only the video in a project if you want.
If the audio and the video were from different sources would it still be a clip?
No, it would be two clips. You can edit them together. If you want to sync multiple video angles (from different cameras) and different sound sources (like really good microphones, separate from the camera) then Final Cut Pro X is your best bet. But for simple needs, you can combine audio clips and video clips in iMovie.
What are scenes?  What are sections?
A scene is usually a unit within your movie. It is up to you to define that. For example, if I was makeing a movie about my daughter's marathon, I might put a scene together about the pre-race preparations, a scene about the starting line, a scene about the midpoint, and a scen at the finish line. Each scene could have many clips. A scene is really where you use your creativity. I am not sure how you are using the word Section.
    What are effects?
An effect could be changing the color balance, adding a sound effect, adding slow motion or fast motion, adding an old-timey or black and white look, adding a freeze frame, there are a lot. You dont have to use them at all. It depends on the story you are trying to tell.
How many different types of panes exist? (So far, I see audio, titles, photos, transitions, effects, and iDVD) What is the difference between iDVD and DVD?
A DVD is a round disk that you put in a DVD player. You can create a DVD if you have DVD authoring software and a DVD burner. Five years ago, all Macs had DVD burners. Now, MacBook Airs, some iMacs, and some Mac Books no longer have built-in burners, but you can always add a DVD burner through a USB port.  Apple used to sell iDVD, which is an app that is used for DVD Authoring.  You can still find copies of iDVD on Amazon or eBay. More on disk burning here. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3711
More and more people are shooting HD video - and DVDs are only standard definition. And more and more people are sharing the video through YouTube and Facebook, which support HD. So Apple has been deemphasizing DVD lately. They have not updated iDVD since 2006. Still, if you make movies for friends and family who are not comfortable with the internet, DVDs are still quite useful.
What is video exactly and how is video different from a movie?  Does video include audio by definition?  Or are there different terms to refer to video with and without audio?
I think I already answered  this one.

  • I have a 2008 iMac. Can iPhoto and iMovie process 720p HD videos?

I am shopping for a megazoom camera. They are mostly built for still photos, but also shoot HD videos.. in either 720p or 1080p formats. I have a 2008 iMac. I have not upgraded to Snow Leopard or a more recent version of iLIfe.
Can my version of iPhoto and iMovie process either format of HD?
A guy at the local Apple store said the video files have to be in AVCHD format, but I have found no info to back this up, so he is probably wrong.
A Canon online rep said 720p could be used, because my mac uses a 1080i format.  ??  Something about up-sourcing.
I am eager to buy a camera, but want to be VERY sure I can use at least a 720p HD format.
As I am a computer neophyte, please explain in layman's terms.
    Thanks very much!

iMovie from '08 iMac.. which makes the iMovie # 7.0
Thanks for the advice! I just found this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/15202.html.
As far as I can tell it says 1080i will work with iMovie 7.0,  But I could be wrong.
I think your advice on using 720p is excellent. The camera I am most inclined to buy at the moment is the Panasonic Lumix FZ-100. I think it has optional .. what do I call them.. resolutions? Possibility of shooting in either 720p or 1080i... or maybe not.
A rather rude apple tech support guy I spoke with yesterday.. if I remember correctly, said 720p or 1080i or 1080p.. wouldn't matter.. for '08 imoive.. but this might not be correct. Besides being unpleasant, he didn't explain things very well..
He also said it is best to find a camera that shoots in AVCHD, and that if I didn't find one, I would have to convert the video file to AVCHD.. I am wondering how to do that, and I am wondering if he is correct.
You have a Canon.. I got an email from a Canon rep who says none of the Canon cameras shoots in AVCHD.. maybe this is not a problem? Do you have to convert your video files to AVCHD?
And.. If I have been shooting in 1080i..or 1080p for that matter,  if I understand you correctly, I can process that video in 720p instead? I don't know if there is an option for this in iMovie '08 (which is version 7.. GRRRR.)
This is all too @#$% complicated! I've been doing research for almost a week.. many hours a day.. trying to figure out what camera to buy, and whether or not it is compatible with my mac. I thought I had it figured out.. but maybe not..
If I need to, I'll get the iLife '09.. but have been reading bad reviews of iLife '11, so probably won't get that one.
Besides the Pan. Lumix, I am checking out the Canon SX20 and SX30.. both shoot in 720p.. I think..  If I can convert these to AVCHD easily (or if I don't have to convert them) maybe the Canons are a better choice.
Lastly.. will these videos process with iPhoto? Mostly I just want to put videos on youtube without any fancy editing. I've been doing this with an older but excellent point and shoot Canon (that does not shoot videos in HD), and have had no problems uploading to youtube.
Thanks VERY much for the help!

  • Youtube and iDVD export settings?

So I had someone videotape my bands live show with the hope of making a DVD and also posting the individual songs to youtube with iMovie 2008, but it seems that with iMovie the audio/video goes out of sync with video clips longer than 20 minutes or so. So after much wasted time figuring that out I bought Final Cut Express 4. Just to be difficult, the developers don't include a share to youtube feature in Final Cut Express 4, but they do it seems in Final Cut PRO. So Im trying to figure out what to export the individual clips at, to then do the extra step of uploading to youtube, but of course there is no info for this in the FCE documentation. Maybe if I buy Final Cut Pro all my troubles will be gone? The direct youtube upload feature in iMovie only takes about 20 minutes total. But this looks like it will take an hour to export, and another half an hour to upload for each 5 minute song (screaming profanities at the top of my lungs). I'm starting to hate this company. Is Premiere any better? One of the guys in the band wants the raw footage to do his own thing with on his Windows PC with "Nero". Will the original .dv files I captured with iMovie work for him? I had to purchase Stuffit Deluxe to segment that .DV file up to fit on 4 DVD's for him. That .dv file is in sync when opening with Quicktime, just not in iMovie. ...and oh yeah for some reason the audio just makes a beeping sound if I import that .dv file into Final Cut Express. So I set that pain in the neck project aside and captured some video straight into Final Cut. I have located the Final Cut captured video, and it seems to be a .mov quicktime file (720x480 DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Integer Little Endian...). Was this a good setting for capturing footage from my old 2001 Canon Elura mini DV camera (original Elura), and will it work for the friend using Nero? Also, I've heard people say to not re-encode the video from the editing software before uploading to youtube, but I tried that and each 5 minute video was going to take about 3 hours to upload with the youtube uploader that way, and there's about 14 of them. Yes I do have high speed internet. Any answers would be appreciated thanks.

You're asking a lot of questions here, some of which having nothing to do with Final Cut Express. There's an iMovie subforum here where you can ask your questions about A/V syncing in iMovie.
In FCE, with standard-def material (NTSC) you need to be working with a DV codec Quicktime ".mov" file (which is not the same as the .dv file that iMovie produces). Otherwise the clip will need to be rendered, hence the beeping sound you heard.
Segmenting that .dv file for your PC-using colleague may not work, depending on whether they can decode the Stuffit Deluxe files you've made, and they may still not be able to open a .dv file, although if they have Quicktime installed it might be possible... but again, you're not likely to find much about that here.
There is nothing wrong with exporting (encoding) a file for YouTube, people do it all the time. But on the other hand, YT gives you a 2GB limit so if you want to export a higher quality version under that limit, there's nothing stopping you. YouTube will re-encode it down no matter what, by the way.
Time and patience (and ease of upload) seem to be an issue with your project, so perhaps it's best to just work with iMovie and get help from the folks on that forum to help you....?

  • Publishing to YouTube from iMovie?

I don't do this very often.  I've made a anolther clip to upload to YouTube, and I've forgotten how to upload it.  I know you can't upload it directly from iMovie.  Can someone direct me to the instructions on how to do this?
    Thank you.

Rather than using the iMovie preset to share to YouTube, try uploading by using the uploader built-in to YouTube.
Export from iMovie using Share > Export Movie. Choose an appropriate size, such as Medium, Large, HD 720p or HD 1080p. Give it a name and location to save to (say, Desktop). YouTube will let you navigate to this movie file. You can also use the file elsewhere, say for burning a DVD or playback on a media player and so forth.
Depending on the export size (resolution), the file will be either .mov or .m4v (both will be in H.264 format, which is the same type of file exported when using the Share > YouTube option).

  • Problem uploading to Youtube from iMovie 9.0.4

When I try to upload a video to Youtube from iMovie 9.0.4, I get an alert..."Username and Password do not match". I have double checked the username and pswrd and they are correct
    Pls help.

Glad I found this thread!  Keith's suggestion of eliminating use of quotes in tags area was spot on. I removed the quotes and video now uploaded successfully.
I also was baffled at why publishing my video from iMovie to youtube would not work. No error, just would hang.  I use an iPad 3 with iMovie for iPad ($4.99 download). After editing my video I was ready to upload.  Filled in all the info in youtube upload area (title, description, tags (including quotes around phrases) as well as changing defaults to HD and public).  After watching the progress bar reach the end, the process would just hang without any error being displayed. Tried redoing a few times, but same hanging result.
Once I found this thread, I said why not try and remove the quotes in the tag section...and amazingly, it worked perfectly...upload completed after the progress bar was finished.  Marvelous!  I will then go to YouTube to update the keyword phrases in quotes
Thanks Keith... Who would have thought the quotation marks were the culprit

  • Serious quality loss with MTS files and iMovie '11

    Hello,
I have some issues with my brand new Panasonic HDC SD700 (a full HD camera)
I experience serious quality loss when I use iMovie to create a movie.
I did some tests, but still puzzled int this world of codecs and formats.
Maybe some of you can help.
I have made a short shot of 450 sec with highest mode (1080p 24fps)
It show is finder as a .MTS file size 99MB, I'm very happy with the quality when I play this with VLC.
iMovie turns this file into a .mov file with 635MB size, in Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode. This quality is already poor compared to original MTS file.
No wonder that the output file (select 1080p H.264 codecs) results also in unacceptable quality.
I'm running latest imOvie version with all updates etc.
I have no idea were to look to solve this issue. It is quite annoying since I have invested in a top Cam recorder. Not sure is Final cut express will sure the issue either.....

I have made a short shot of 450 sec with highest mode (1080p 24fps)
Have you tried shooting at the PAL standard of 25fps? I checked the specs for your Panasonic but didn't see any mention of a 24fps mode, but most reviews seem to miss mentioning the shooting modes. If you did indeed shoot at 24fps, did you choose this frame rate when importing to iMovie '11?
I export as 1080p (same as original. My output is a bit blurry and colors are a bit pale.
Did you use the 1080p preset under Share to Media Browser, or Export using QuickTime? If the latter, be sure to select an appropriate data rate - if set too low this may result in poor quality output.
And yes you are right I'm using IMovie '11, quite confusing that '11 means version 9.0
Yes - very confusing! In the forums, iMovie versions are generally referred to by their year number, not version number. It's a pity that we have version 9.0 (iMovie '11) and iMovie '09.
Glad you liked the video - it looked very clear on YouTube at 1080p Full Screen, at least to my ageing eyes!

I have the feeling there isn't a real solution for many of us who are having this problem.
I just gave up and exported to the desktop, and then used YouTube's uploader, which works fine.
Sorry, I don't have a fix, but wanted to add my voice as someone who has tried a lot of ways with his iMac, and figured it wasn't worth all the hassle. YouTube's uploader lets me upload many clips at once, add commentary, and then go do something else, sure that it will go ok. I had the iMovie-YouTube link working for a bit, but then it went all haywire again.

  • I want to compare iMovie '06 and iMovie '08

I will buy a new Intel iMac when it comes with Leopard, and will then of course have iLife '08 installed. After reading a lot of reviews of iMovie '08 and several video reviews on YouTube and hearing all the complaints about a lack of editing power in '08, I am considering getting my years old video clips and experimenting with both iMovie '06 and iMovie '08 ie, using the same clips, make a movie with iMovie '06 and iMovie '08 and end up with two movies.
I want to see which I like more. Will I like the ease of iMovie '08? Or will I start to wish I could edit my clips not just at the begining and end, but in the middle? I won't miss all those special effects or even the transitions, actually..
I figure if I make a copy of the clips I will then have two sets of the same clips. Set A for movie making with iMovie '06 and Set B for movie making with iMovie '08. Then I can play the movies and see which I like better.
Please tell me if this is all it would take to do what I am thinking about. If I work on iMovie '08, the iMovie '06 should stay untouched and unchanged by iMovie '08. This is possible, right??? I am assuming yes. But must I do something on my side to assure that the movies stay separate and '06 doesn't get subsumed by '08?
    — Lorna in Southern California

I think iMovie 08 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.
I use both iMovie 08 and 06 depending on what I'm trying to do, each has its strengths.
I use iMovie 06 (with iDVD 08) if I think I will ever put the movie on a DVD. When you're ready to make a DVD just share to iDVD 08, unlike iMovie 08, iMovie 06 has "Share to iDVD" _built in!_ iMovie 06 has Chapter marking built-in also, a few clicks and you have Chapters and sharing with iDVD.
Remember that Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
