YouTube buffering and WiFi speed slow on iPad

I got my first iPad a week ago, and I've had nothing but slow YouTube buffering speeds when playing high definition videos. However, it's not always slow. Sometimes it buffers a few times faster than video playback time, and sometimes it just barely keeps up. Most of the time it lags behind and forces me to wait multiple times, for long periods of time, to let it buffer (unacceptable). I rarely have YouTube buffering issues on my computer and they only last for short periods of time.
Speedtest.net results:
11-20Mbsp on my Macbook Pro (10.8.2)
5-9Mbps on my iPad (6.0.1)
7-12Mbps on my iPhone (6.0.1)
Upload on all of them are ~2-2.5Mbps
First of all, why does the iPad get such poor data speeds compared to my other devices? Secondly, what is going on with YouTube buffering? As i'm writing this, I'm attempting to buffer a 1080p video on my computer and its doing horribly. I did another speed test and got 14.34Mbps down, so its clearly not my bandwidth. I've reset my router and modem, didn't help. Is it the iPad's slow
I'm a Youtube junkie and part of the reason I bought this iPad was for viewing YouTube so I'm considerably upset about this. I hope someone has some advice that's helpful
I use the app, McTube on my iPad to view YouTube videos.

thank you for the response. i would like to test this hypothesis. i just need to find a friend who does have a router that supports QoS, and then i can take my router over there and see if we cant test this theory out by trying the router with QoS, then without QoS, and then with the apple extreme. and that way we can have definitive evidence if the extreme performs the same as routers with Qos disabled. thankyou again for your input.
if any other users get results before i do, please feel free to share your results. thank you in advance

  • How can i check the wifi speed on the ipad air?

I just bought the iPad Air for my wife as an upgrade from the iPad 2. Now she is telling me that it is buffering (loading, lagging) her show's a lot more than before. Is there any way to check the wifi signal strength, speed, or settings?
I have checked the wifi speed with 2 different lap tops and they are very close to each other.

After reading a lot of ratings and reviews from the app store, OOKLA has not made it work on a iPad.
Love the app on my phone and run test all the time on my computers. Not a hater! But after the update the app does not run as smooth as it did before
Anyway to see or check the settings on the iPad Air?

  • IPad Mini 3 LTE Upload Speeds Slower than iPad Mini Gen 1

I have both an iPad Mini Gen 1 (non-retina) and a new iPad Mini 3.  Both units are WiFi + Cellular and are on Verizon Wireless.  The iPad Mini Gen 1 indicates full signal strength when on LTE, 5 dots.  The iPad Mini 3 indicates only 2 or 3 dots.  The difference in the number of dots, or bars, could simply be a difference in the method used to calibrate signal strength.   My first impression though was that the new Mini 3 did not have as sensitive a receiver as the Gen 1 Mini, so I decided to do some bandwidth tests.
Both units indicated a ping time averaging 40 milliseconds.  The download speeds were comparable, approximately 23 Mbps.  The upload speed for the iPad Gen 1 was approximately 20Gbps whereas the new Mini 3 was much slower, only 5Gbps.  Both my phones are also on Verizon and they gave me speed numbers like the Gen 1 mini.
So why would the new Mini 3 be so much slower when uploading, and why would the signal strength be so much weaker?  I must add that the Verizon tower I connect through is line-of-sight about 1/4 mile away on the hill behind my house.  I should have full signal strength on any device.
Getting technical here, all I can think of is that the two iPads are operating on different LTE frequency bands and not connecting through the same tower.  The iPad Mini Gen 1 can only operate on Verizon's 700MHz LTE which is band 13.  The new iPad Mini 3 can operate on either LTE band 13 or the new 1700MHz band 4.  The new 1700MHz band is now being used to alleviate congestion on the old 700MHz band.  Perhaps since my device is one of the few that can operate on the new 1700 MHz frequencies, Verizon is forcing my device to use that band?  Maybe that could account for the upload speed difference between the two devices?

I find it interesting to hear that  the new Mini 3 has this issue. I purchased two iPhone 6 pluses and activated them both around the 1st of October.. Both 6's are upgrades from 5's. I have been going round and round with both Verizon TSS and AppleCare Senior Tech Support about having 100's of dropped calls, weaker signal strength than my iphone 5's and the iphone 6's tendency to grab 3G service when both iPhone 5's  have solid LTE service. Apple engineers have had me jump through many redundant hoops including multiple restores, network resets, setting the phone up as new, having Verizon reprovision the line, I have even had one iPhone 6 replaced and tried three SIM cards. Things I have figured out on my own are that toggling Airplane Mode on/off usually makes the iPhone 6 switch back to LTE (But only for a little while. And doing this also temporily increases LTE signal strength when LTE is on 1 dot.) and as you suspect about your Mini 3 I have confirmed that the iPhone 6 Plus is almost always on Band 4 (XLTE Band) (The iPhone 6 does sometimes switch to Band 13. The iPhone 5 only supports Band 13 and therefore is always on that band).  Something to note about Band 4 vs. Band 13 is that there are two important differences in these bands. Band 4 has double the bandwidth of band 13 (20Mhz vs. 10MHz). Band 4 operates in the 1700 MHz frequency range and Band 13 operates in the 700 Mhz frequency range. One pitfall of Band 4 being in the 1700Mhz range is that the signal can travel less distance than Band 13 can in the lower 700 MHz range. Being that Band 4 has less reach it leads me to conclude that is the reason why I am seeing less signal strength on the iPhone 6 Plus (And you on the Mini 3).
**The way I finally figured out how to determine the band the iPhone's are using I found searching the web for peole experiencing my issues. Verizon could not tell me what band I was using, even when I was on the phone with them. On the iPhone there is a sequence of numbers, pound signs and asterisks that you enter in the dialer and press send. This brings up a field test that tells you many things about your network/carrier service (Many things which are Greek to me, as I am not a cellular engineer). Using this field test I have driven hundreds of miles watching what band I am on and my signal strength ( In what I assume is decibels). All that I have learned has yet to assist me in having Apple or Verizon resolve my issues.

  • K1 youtube issues and wifi shutting off

Thought I would throw this question out there.
I was finally (after restoringmy K1) able to get all my updates complete. I have the latest version as of today on the Honeycomb.
Here is the issue...now my internet is shutting down at random for one thing. I have to go back in each time to settings and turn it back on. There seems to be more touch screen delay or nonrecognition. Finally, I can not watch a youtube video through.
Here is an example of my youtube issue...
I watch it in youtube for mobile which I got from the youtube website. The video starts fine, only takes a few seconds to buffer and then plays. It will play for about 2 to 4 minutes into the video and then it jumps to the end, stops the video and you can not rewind, restart or reset it at all. The only option is to refresh but still same thing happens. I tried using youtube yesterday and today with the same results. Here is the other catch. My son has a cheap nextbook that I decided to try the exact options on side by side just to make sure it was not our internet connection. His worked fine all the way through. Mine juped to the end and stopped. I tried a different video today...same thing.
I have read through other posts. Does anyone have fixes for these issues? Honestly, I have a few more days to actually return this. I just need to make a decision. I am just afraid that I am going to always be rittled with peoblems. However I like the tablet when it is working. I am not really sure how well all tablets work except that I know my son doesn't have the problems that I do. He really has not had a y problems and we bought ours around the same time. I have what seems like a lot of force closes when he rarely has any if at all.
Thanks for any help and imput you all can offer.

Well, it is done. I returned the K1 yesterday. I just decided the bugs that I had and the constant frustrations were just not worth it. I think at this time I will just stick with my laptop.

  • Massive difference between wired and wifi speed fr...

Our new wired Home hub is delivering around 36 MBPS but on wife is only getting 25... I know we lose some but this is ridiculous! Any thoughts a to why please?

There are many reasons for slower speeds on wireless and that is the reason that all ISPs will not guarantee speeds on wireless. Your speed difference is probably better than most.
Speeds can be effected by interference, distance from source, standard of receiving device, construction of property walls floors etc,
Some things you can try to improve it is check that the wireless card drivers on your device are upto date. Use the card manufactures website for that.
Download, install and run inSSider. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel.

  • WiFi Speeds, slow d/l with iPhone

I am not sure if I should post this in the iPhone thread or the Airport threads so I am posting to both to try and get the best results.
Here is the hardware I am using.
    Hardware: iPhone 4s (5.1.1), Macbook 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008 (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4), iPad 1 (5.1.1), Airport Extreme (7.6.1) & a Airport Express (7.6.1)
Airport Extreme is conntected to the cable modem all devices conntect to the Airport Extreme except for a Windows (Alienware PC) which is connected to the Airport Express using a extended network.
Here is what's happening. I was getting really slow internet speeds about 2-3 MB down, so I thought it was my ISP. Contacted support and they said it could be the router, didn't really believe it to be the case but sure enough I hardwired directly to the cable modem and was getting around 15-20 MB down.
So I have been using the Airport Extreme wireless options on various settings to see which channel and setting provided the best download speeds. Here is what my tests have shown:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Av-YWMjaATffdGRpZjNDWXY4QnhTODZKNjV vZGVSOXc
Basically I can get every other device on my network at a decent speed except for the iPhone which never get's above 1 MB down. I have tried to reset the network settings on the iPhone and shut down and restart the phone with the same results.
Anyone have any ideas? Or what channels and wireless settings should work the best? I know the iPhone is N capatiable but at only 2.4 GHZ. Also I am suprised that simply changing the channels and settings on the Airport Extreme would provide such different speed results for the different devices in my home.
    Thanks everyone!

    No ideas anyone?

  • Wifi speeds slow

    Hi,
I have just signed up with BT Infinity and have done speed tests both on my PC which is plugged into the router and my laptop which is using the wifi...  My PC is showing speeds of 37mbps but the laptop (in which the signal strength is showing as excellent) is only showing speeds of 7mbps.
Please can someone tell me why this is and please don't say it is my laptop as when we had Virgin the speeds were the same.
    Thanks,
    Cazie.

  • Harddrive Buffers and transfer speeds

I'm getting 3 1 tb WD Caviar Black drives for my new PPro system (no Raid).  Will there be a difference between the 32 MB buffer-3 GBs and the 64 MB-6GB on this sytem--
    Asus P6x58D Premium
    i7-950 3.06
    24 GB Ram
Is KINGSTON KHX1600C9D3K3/12GX okay for the memory?
(Getting smaller drive C: for OS and apps)
    Thanks!

For the 32MB/SATA 3.0 Gbps version of the WD Black, it depends on which hardware (not firmware) revision of that drive. Some of the early revisions with three 334GB platters are still on resellers' shelves while most recent production versions have two 500GB platters. The version with three 334GB platters turned out to be slower than even a Seagate 7200.12 1TB drive in AVI disk performance in the PPBM5 benchmark.

  • After installing lion, battery life cut by 75% and browser speed slowed to a crawl

My Mac Book Pro was working perfectly fine until I installed Lion.  Now my battery life has been cut but a least 75% (only lasts about 45 minutes on a full charge) and it has also affected the speed of my browser.
    Can anyone help?

There is a 190 page thread discussing the battery life and health issues assocaited with ML that you will find in this forum located here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135250?start=0&tstart=0 .  Some people have had some success in installing the ML 10.8.2 combo pack over their 10.8.2 instance.  Some have had success in performing a clean install.  Others still have problem, and others have moved back to Lion or SL.  In your posting, are you saying you've installed Lion or Mountain Lion?  I'm assuming that latter.  I've recently reverted back to Lion until I have more confidence that Apple has tackled the issue.

  • HH5 wifi speed fading issue - any resolution?

Having trawled the forum here, it does seem that there is a recurring techinical problem with wifi speeds slowing over a time period, or drop-outs, that require a re-boot to solve.
It is a wifi issue, not wired or line problems.
It still occurs having unsynced the 5 and 2.4Ghz and given them different SSIDs
    And Smart setup is off.
And automatic channel selection is off.
This does seem to be specific hardware issue with the HH5, and others before it.
Has anyone found a succesful route to either get it replaced or get it fixed?

I'm also a bit concerned that rebooting/reseting the modem may trigger some automatic speed reduction by BT, thinking it's a fault!  Wait, maybe that'll get their attention....!
no it won't - just result in a lower speed until the DLM sees line stable again and increases it which may be a few weeks

  • G710 - WIFI Speed

Hallo, I bought my new Lenovo G710 a week ago. Since first day, I discovered a problem with wifi speed.
This machine have Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter and wifi speed on this laptop is very unstable.
I have another five laptops at home - 2 is another lenovo. So I did try to check settings - threshold etc...
All PCs at home works around 75 MB/s download and G710 runs only on 3 - 26 MB/s
All laptops are tested on the same place at home, by the same speedmeter and similiar wifi settings (different wifi adapters)
Driver is the newest as possible. I did try to change it for another versions to eliminate this option.
Any idea what to do? Its though working when internet working just occasionally...

    hello there,
could you please search the forum for wifi speed problem? there are lots of threads/solutions that may help you to solve the issue.

  • IPad Air WiFi ultra slow speed issues

Having very bad WiFi streaming and general web page loading with new iPad Air, far slower than iPad Gen 1 (iOS 5) and iPhone (iOS 7).
Speed test results using same speed test app all devices pointed to same Clifton NJ server.
    Download speeds:
    iPad Air: .26 Mbps
    iPhone 5: 12 Mbps
    iPad 1: 11 Mbps
Mac Pro: 33 Mbps (Ethernet Cat 6 wired) yes I know WiFi is slower, not .26 vs 33 slower
    My network:
    Motorola SB 6141 Cable modem
All Ethernet wires are Cat 6
D-LINK DIR-655 gigabit router, WiFi should be minimum 100 or 150 Mbps (2.4 only)
Obstructions: very open modern apartment with good physical open shot to router. Bedroom wall vs router. Router is on 45 degree angle 30 feet from devices. Keep in mind that regardless of wall interference, all tests above were done with iDevices in exact same spot from bedroom to test wall interaction.
Result: iPad Air is usually not able to stream anything continuously or in HD ever. Some vid signals are amazingly pixelated to where movie credits are unreadable. So I use my iPad 1 instead for perfect viewing. Something's very wrong.
I assume the router can't differentiate between, however, AppleCare today surmised since I have 2 WiFi devices way out performing the iPad Air, it "may" be it's newer firmware being incompatible with my router, which logically would make sense to account for diff between it and a legacy iPad and modern iPhone.
Some of you online are true network geniuses so I wanted to hear your input for me and others with new iPad Air HD high speed expectations and what configurations to make in Settings and should a new Router be considered 1) because they are faster anyway and 2) if there is an iPad firmware issue with older even still working well routers like the DIR 655.
PS: in comparing configurations between devices, I see the iPad Air under Settings > WiFi > HTTP Proxy > (off, manual or auto)
Is HTTP Proxy an important setting to get max performance. I need to search and read up on it. Setting to Auto did increase dwnld speed from .26 to 9 Mbps.
    Thanks.

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

  • Slow YouTube buffering speeds

My iPhone 4 has been having major YouTube buffering problems. It alternates between fast and slow loading. On Wifi with full strength a video will take seconds to load but if i leave it and come back to it on the same connection, it will take sometimes hours for a 3 minute video. the same problem happens on ATT 3G (which isnt amazing...) but it's just not conistent. Any fixes besides restoring, rebooting, and taking it back to the store? My battery hasnt been working well lately so i might take it back soon, but this is the second iP4 I've had and the YouTube issue is not fixed.

Same exact problem as you.Im on my second ip4 and has ridiculously slow wifi loading times.I think its a software problem and theres nothing that could be done till apple fixes it.I know it isnt my router because videos load no problem on my Ip3g.
