YouTube unbearably slow; everything else fine.

Hi there,
I've been experiencing increasingly severe YouTube buffering times. Speed tests suggest I'm getting the 5mbps I should be, but according to YouTube's stats, my average rate over the last month was 2.39 mbps. Even that is heavily weighted by the more decent download speeds I had a few weeks ago. At this point, I cannot even play a video in 240p without long buffering.
Every other website works fine; I can stream HD videos from Netflix and other sources without issue.
Also, this occurs with every computer I use in the house.
Please help.

You Tube is the third most popular website.  They get a LOT of traffic.  So their servers get bogged down at peak times.  They know it. Which is why they give tips on dealing with low speed and suggest not viewing in HD. The only solution is to deal with the buffering or visit in off hours.  In my experience during  early morning and late night hours (11pm) I don't have a problem with any video. During the day and evening a lot of videos don't play well.

  • Media Encoder Slows Everything Else Down

    Hello,
I'm a happy new user of CC 2014 for the most part, just having one issue so far.  Whenever I transcode with AME CC 2014, everything else on my computer becomes unbearably slow.  Most of my searches for this issue have turned up complaints about AME itself being too slow.  I'm having the opposite problem.  AME is ripping through transcodes like no one's business, and I'm very satisfied with its vastly improved performance from Compressor and other older software, but I need to be able to do other things while I'm transcoding!  (NOTE: I was not experiencing this issue with AME CS 6)
Based on some advice I got, I made sure that my Renderer was set to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and not Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL).  Unfortunately, I noticed no change between the two options.  I tried changing the Memory allocation in Preferences as well.  Here is a screenshot of my CPU's memory usage across two test transcodes.  The first hump shows ~96% CPU usage by AME when I allocate 10 GB to AME and 6 GB to other software.  The second hump, also ~96%, is from allocating 1 GB to AME and 15 GB to other software.  No improvement noticed when tweaking Memory allocation settings.
When AME is transcoding, my Wacom tablet (USB) slows down until the cursor is moving through sludge, appearing and reappearing constantly.  Interestingly, my bluetooth mouse does not experience the same decrease in responsiveness, but basically all other software becomes unusably glitchy and slow.
I like the new AME render speeds, I just want to strike a balance between fast rendering and multitasking in other video software.  Any ideas of how to fix this problem?

Interesting.  But to the extent that I'm describing?  The jump from AME CS 6 to CC 10 is enormous, with CC 10 I basically can't transcode and do anything else on my computer at the same time.  I doubt that Adobe designed their product to be used exclusively in this way.

  • System preferences is very slow, everything else is fine

I have a Macbook Pro from mid-2009 and since installing Mountain Lion yesterday I have some major performance issues only with System Preferences. It started when I wanted to configure iCloud and now I notice it is for nearly all items in System Preferences. Does anyone have any ideas?

I managed to get some performance back by disabling icloud on all devices (iphone and ipad) and then restarting the icloud setup process on my macbook first, followed by the devices. It all seems to work better now however still not as good as I would expect.
The back to my mac option also does not work and nor does the find my mac.

  • Cannot boot from leopard disc anymore(or image of), everything else fine

I am posting this from the osx forum because this is now obviously a hardware problem.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1524924&tstart=60
In addition I have swapped the ram chips around and tested them one at a time and made an image of the install disc on a firewire drive and tried to boot.....I get the same kernel panic.
I called apple care and they seems to think it might be a logic board or ram problem. I have some owc ram and crucial. I can just see the "genius bar" saying that that is the problem because it is not apple branded...blah..blah.....and not really get to the heart of the problem.
I have recently added an 8800gt which works fine..... any chance of that being the problem?
    Thanks for any extra help!!

Try with two dimms only at a time.
Try with Apple only; Crucial only; OWC only.
Make sure to reset PRAM/NVRAM after each change to clean NVRAM.
run AHT if you have not yet. It is good at finding defective RAM actually, but not for the more difficult 'soft' errors that do occur.
In the kern_excp entries in the panic log it could point to a repeating bad address.
Three vendors RAM may not get along, or one DIMM could be problem; or even one of the Risers.

  • Reader slows everything else!

Adobe Reader XI, Version 11.0.5, running under Windows 7.   Frequently find all applications running at a crawl or stalling indefinitely.  When that happens Task Manager Processes Screen discloses that multiple instances of Acrord are still resident (6, 8, 12, or more).  This happens even when no pdfs are open and all recent pdf viewing has been long closed.  Using Task Manager to close all those remaining instances restores normal computer speed.

Interesting.  But to the extent that I'm describing?  The jump from AME CS 6 to CC 10 is enormous, with CC 10 I basically can't transcode and do anything else on my computer at the same time.  I doubt that Adobe designed their product to be used exclusively in this way.

  • Help: Cannot boot from leopard disc anymore, everything else fine

I was working on an ibook and messing with it in firewire mode and was going to install leopard on it that way from my macpro. (just letting you know the context)
I tried to restart my machine(mac pro) and boot leopard both by pushing C and by running the installer.
I get the "You need to hold the power button panic message" everytime I do this. I unplugged external devices and tried this also and it has the same problem.
I cannot boot from the dvd anymore. If I eject the disc, osx loads normally.
Any ideas what I can do? (I have tried safe boot, pram clearing and hold option on boot to check options)
Here is the kernel panic when it finally loads into osx.
here is the kernel panic log when it reboots into OSX

    I really appreciate everyone's help.
I am certainly not above taking the machine in but I will say this.....
I have been building and working on PC's for 15-20 years. I have never once used or had the need for a repair shop. It is my hobby. I recently switched to osx to give the mac a try and I love it.
I will say that vista/xp has four times as many problems but at least i can fix whatever comes my way hardware or software.
Any more ideas how to settle this without making my first trip to the repair shop ever?...

  • Am I the only one that thinks iTunes slows everything down?

Maybe my computer is just very slow, but I feel like itunes is terrible in terms of memory usage. Every time I start it, it takes forever to boot and slows everything else down. Even if my computer is slow, this is a fault in the program as others don't have this effect... Anyone have feedback?

There's not much in iTunes that would slow the boot process of your computer, since the support processes (Mobile Device Support and Bonjour are the only ones I can think of that start at boot, though I may be forgetting one or two others) that iTunes uses don't start until late in the boot process. So I doubt that all your performance problems stem from iTunes. But you can try uninstalling iTunes - it shouldn't remove your content, but make sure you have a good backup just in case something goes wrong - and see if matters improve. That way you'll know for sure. Alternatively you can try just stopping, or uninstalling, the background processes and see if that makes any difference.
Another possibility is your system's security software, which might be blocking or delaying the launch of some components.
FWIW, I haven't seen any change in the performance of either my Windows XP nor Windows 7 systems after installation of iTunes.
    Regards.

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).
If you want to copy all the infor from an old iPod touch to the inew iPod see:

iTunes, app store , iBooks store, etc won't load and I don't know why. Everything else works fine, and I've rebooted it. The problem is still there and I know I have a good Internet connection. Help please?

Have you tried disconnecting and re-connecting to your network ?. And when you say rebooted do you mean a reset ? If not then try that : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
You could also try closing those apps completely. From the home screen (i.e. not with any of those apps 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes, App Store and iBooks apps to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

I have not been able to sync my mail with iCloud on my MacBookPro (Lion OS).  Everything else has been syncing fine for the past two months, but when I go to System Pref/iCloud/and try to check Mail, it asks me to choose an iCloud email address. When I put in my regular @me.com email, it says that address already exists (of course it does - it's mine!) and wants me to choose another one.  But I want it to sync with my stuff.  What can I do?  I haven't been able to find help anywhere online...  Thanks!

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

Perhaps you should ask over in the iPad community, you may get better answers there.
It's actually my fault that psoon ended up here ... s/he intially posted over at Home Sharing, and I tried a relocate request to Apple TV rather than iPad.

If on a computer browser you go to icloud.com and sing in are you notes there? If so get them off.
    Next,
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings>iCloud and delete the iCloud account from the iPod,. Note this does not delete the account, only deletes it from the iPod. Then sign back in.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Backup and then restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
