YouTube video covered by a black square, video is playing and controls are working but obstructed.Caused by CSS .I tried disabling css and the video is visible, removing or changing
position: relative in #watch-player embed
or
display: block; in #movie_player
using firebug also works.
edit:
I also tried using a portable version with no addons and it works
possible addon related i will try to see witch addon

After much experimentation i tracked it down to the userscript known as
Youtube HD Ultimate.

• Why do some YouTube videos stop playing after a short time?

Since sometime in October, 2013, I have noticed that more and more YouTube videos stop playing within a minute of starting. Most that stop do so in 15 or 16 seconds. The playing stops because the download stops. I watch this on a network activity monitor I always have running. Not all videos do this, but the problem is becoming more and more frequent. Some videos which played correctly for me in the recent past are now exhibiting this problem.
Other than installing the latest Firefox updates I have NOT changed the software on my machine. I run Linux by the way. I do not think this is a Linux problem because (1) it was all working before and (2) my son who runs both Mac OS X *and* Windows is also seeing the same problem. We both use Firefox as our browser on all our platforms.
I should also note that I am NOT seeing this problem with any of the other video websites I use, only when I go to YouTube. That leads me to believe that the problem is not in Firefox; if it were it should affect videos from all websites.
Additionally the problem occurs whether or not I log into YouTube.
I have not run Firefox in safe mode because all the extensions I use did not affect the download of Videos before, so I don't expect unchanged extensions to suddenly start causing problems.
So, anyone else see this problem? (There was another note which talked about the same problem but it was disabled.)
Also -- pardon my paranoia, but -- I need to ask: Since YouTube is owned by Google and Google has its own browser it wants you to use, Chrome, is it possible that Google is intentionally causing some YouTube videos to fail if it sees that they are being sent to Firefox?
(That is not so outlandish I think. Microsoft WAS at one point caught mangling web pages going to certain web browsers other than IE. And these days Google wants to dominate the Internet just as badly as Microsoft does, so why not pull dirty tricks too?)
If this keeps happening I am going to have to try Google's Chrome to see if it somehow manages to play YouTube videos correctly while Firefox does not. But I really do NOT want to install Chrome because I trust Google about as much as I trust Microsoft, which is to say Not At All.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
There have been some issues with Flash 11 in the recent past. This could be a manifestation of that issue. Kindly check this response below to see if this helps you in viewing Flash videos.
Also, if you want to check if this is a flash problem and specifically on youtube, you can try the HTML5 version of Youtube. In this, there are no plugins involved, and the browser natively renders the videos. You can signup for the HTML5 trial by visiting http://youtube.com/html5. Please try that and check if the issue goes away.
Also, in this case, Google might not be doing anything sinister - they generally try to be standards compliant too. You can definitely try installing Google Chrome and test this issue, but we definitely would want you to continue to be a Firefox user :)

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
# Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/> <br/>
# Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
# Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
# Restart Firefox.

Also, try this one too
Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:
* Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems
* Flash 11.3 crashes

• Youtube video stops playing after 11 seconds

Mac Pro / Mountain Lion 10.8.2 / Flash 11.4 - YouTube videos stop playing after 11 secs.  Only just started happening last week - around time when I installed latest Lion upgrade but this may be a red herring.  Tried uninstalling Flash and reinstalling with no change.  Checked/emptied cache.

There are several topics with similar symptoms, but I don't think anybody has found an answer yet, as it only occurs on some few systems.
What I would try if I encountered the same problem:
try disable Hardware Acceleration (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337)
try update the graphics drivers (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765)

• How to stop youtube videos from playing after restart

every time I restart firefox (currently 24.1.1 or 14.0.1) any tabs with youtube videos start playing and I have to wait until after restart is complete before I can find it/them.
is there a way to stop this?

I don't know of a way to stop auto-play on restart only. There are some extensions that can stop auto-play in general (i.e., all the time). I haven't tried any of them myself, but it looks as though these might help:
* SmartVideo For YouTube
* Stop YouTube Autoplay (updated version not yet reviewed)

• Youtube video is blank,but audio played well. other browser such as chrome got no problem with it. FF Developer Edition.

- youtube video just blank, but audio is there. tried both embedded in facebook or other website, and at youtube.com. both same result.
- facebook video played just fine
- other browser played just fine.. no problem at all..
- i'm on firefox developer edition
- tried installing latest flash update, still the same result.

This problem can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

• YouTube videos stopped playing on V 37.0

Running 37.0 Firefox on Windows 7 - 64 bit. All updates updated. Flash is 17,0,0,134 and checks out at Adobe site.
This afternoon YouTube videos stopped playing. In the center of the frame are circling dots. The video appears to have loaded, as I can move the time slider and see frames at the various times, I just does not play, just gives the circling "loading" dots. YouTube runs fine in IE. In Foxfire, if I go to other sites, like news and videos/ads play just fine.
I disabled all add-ons, set Shockwave & Flash to "always activate" and still the YouTube videos will not play. Seem to download, just not play.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Please also consider an add on for a work around to change HTML5 to the default, however this should have been fixed in version 37.0.1 are you still seeing this issue?

• Youtube videos only play properly at 240p

I've had an annoying problem for several weeks.
Youtube videos only play properly at 240p.  At any rate higher, they are garbled.  Audio is fine, but the video is garbled.
Any ideas?
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  No luck.
This happens with IE and FF.
Thanks,.
Eph

Try to
disable hardware acceleration (Flash Player Settings);
update the drivers for your graphics/video/display adapter.

• I have a Mac Air.  When I go to view any video online (youtube for example)and click on a video, I get the space where the video should play but there is just a black screen and no play button and the video does not start.  Any ideas?

I have a Mac Air. When I go to view  video online (youtube for example), the screen for the video comes up with a black square space where the video should play.  But there is no pay button and the vidoe never starts playing.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Shockwave and Flash are not the same. Try installing a Flash plug-in. Here's the latest: Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.183

• I can no longer get Youtube videos to play in Firefox (v5 on Win XP), while I can with Google Chrome - any ideas?

When I call up a Youtube video I just get a black rectangle - bo picture, sound, etc. Videos from other sources seem to play OK.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

• YouTube videos not playing in either IE or Chrome

As of this morning, most YouTube videos are not playing. After the advertisement (which always plays properly), the player goes black with no controls. Right-clicking shows "Movie not loaded".
This happens in both IE10 and Chrome on Windows 7 64-bit (I'm using 32-bit browsers.)
I have followed the instructions in several other threads here. Flash has been uninstalled completely and reinstalled. (Current version 11.8.800.168). Browser, Flash, and Macromedia caches have all been deleted and hardware acceleration disabled. Add-ons/plug-ins/Active X have been variously disabled and enabled. The https hack likewise does nothing.
What is going on?

My first guess would be that something is interfering with Flash from loading the content properly.  I would look at your antivirus/firewall software to start.  An easy way to test this would be to start your computer in safe mode with networking enabled.  This should stop all third party services from running.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mo de=windows-7
If Flash starts working, the next step would be determine what else is being loaded on your computer that might be interfering.

• Youtube videos not playing.

Since updating to Firefox 5 I can no longer play Youtube videos. I get a black box with no audio or video. Youtube does work on Safari. I've updated Adobe Flash, with no improvement.

I think it's the flash player in general as I get problems on other sites, and it's only when flash is involved. Strangely on youtube i get no problems in 720p and 1080p, if I'm watching something in 480p or less and I change something on the player, like pause etc, it will just hang. The sound will continue but the video will freeze. It will also completely lock up Firefox until the video ends. This happened soon after I updated to FF5. I'm betting Adobe is to blame.
Chrome works fine, downloading the videos and watching them in something like VLC is fine.
What gets me is that it seems everyone is getting different problems. I'm not getting this black box problem.

• How do you stop multiple Youtube videos from playing at the same time?

As of a few days ago, when I click on a youtube video, as the commercial begins to play, you can begin to hear multiple/different commercials playing at the same time. After the commercials, the same issue occurs with the main video--multiple videos are being played at the same time and are not in sync. I've updated all my plug ins and have tried the suggestion posted in the forum provided in the link below in which someone else has expressed the same issue, but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone know what can be done?
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/5Lnikma4UqM

Are you loading those videos as Flash or HTML5? It is possible to prevent videos from playing until you click something with Flashblock for Flash or Stop Tube HTML5 for HTML5. You can also stop the commercials with Adblock Plus with an Easylist subscription.
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stop-tube/

• No sound on youtube videos/audio posts but itunes works.

When I go to youtube, the volume on the youtube videos are up all the way and so is my sound but nothing is heard. I've tried multiple videos. Also, when I'm on tumblr, the audio posts don't play either BUT when I listen to itunes, the tracks play perfectly and I can hear it.

YouTube uses Adobe Flash, maybe you can re-install Flash or right click on the video and check the sound settings
