YouTube videos stop playing/loading after 10-15 seconds

Starting about 2 weeks ago, YouTube videos no longer play or fully load for me (and, from scanning both here and in google, it appears for LOTS of people on both Macs and PCs). A video will begin to load and play normally for the first 10 to 15 seconds, then simply stop loading or, more accurately, it appears to repeatedly reload that first little segment (if the little slider is accurate), sometimes getting a few additional seconds, but never much beyond 18 or 20 seconds.
It's happening on pretty much all YouTube videos as well as videos on other web pages (though it's possible they've all been hosted by YouTube anyway).
I do have current versions of Safari and Adobe Flash installed (and have reinstalled them). I've also cleared my cache and cookies. And I have a good DSL connection that doesn't usually have a bandwidth problem. All was working fine until a couple of weeks ago. I've run diagnostics but didn't see anything obvious.
Anyone able to offer a possible solution or, at least, a place to look for one?

I found a solution. It was intended for Lion 10.7.4, but it also worked for 10.6.8. Here it is:
My Flash Player plug-in would not play videos on YouTube (using Safari in Lion). It turned out that my Safari settings needed to be reset after the recent Lion 10.7.4 and Flash upgrades.  I called Apple tech...
This is what we did to fix it:
1. Open Safari.
2. Go to top left menu, under "Safari" click on "Reset Safari."
3. UNCHECK the first two boxes, leave the next three checked, plus UNCHECK the next two, and keep the last three checked.
4. Hit "Reset"
5. After the reset finishes, Safari will relaunch and you can test Flash by going to YouTube to see that videos will now play.

  • YouTube Videos Stop Playing/Loading During Playback

Can anyone tell me how to fix my iPhone4? When viewing YouTube videos with the App over wifi, everything is good until after a random amount of playback, the download bar stops loading and the video stops playing. This happens on most videos.

I was about to post the same problem - many YouTube videos either won't start downloading to my iPhone 4 or download about 15% then stop.  Here's an example of a video that won't start downloading:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfdK6H9d6J0&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I'm on a very fast cable internet link and ten feet from my Airport Extreme base station.  I'm on iOS 4.3.3.
This happens on WiFi or 3G links, everything else works fine.
Recall that the original iPhone ads touted the ability to download and watch YouTube materials.  Not so much anymore.

  • Why do some YouTube videos stop playing after a short time?

Since sometime in October, 2013, I have noticed that more and more YouTube videos stop playing within a minute of starting. Most that stop do so in 15 or 16 seconds. The playing stops because the download stops. I watch this on a network activity monitor I always have running. Not all videos do this, but the problem is becoming more and more frequent. Some videos which played correctly for me in the recent past are now exhibiting this problem.
Other than installing the latest Firefox updates I have NOT changed the software on my machine. I run Linux by the way. I do not think this is a Linux problem because (1) it was all working before and (2) my son who runs both Mac OS X *and* Windows is also seeing the same problem. We both use Firefox as our browser on all our platforms.
I should also note that I am NOT seeing this problem with any of the other video websites I use, only when I go to YouTube. That leads me to believe that the problem is not in Firefox; if it were it should affect videos from all websites.
Additionally the problem occurs whether or not I log into YouTube.
I have not run Firefox in safe mode because all the extensions I use did not affect the download of Videos before, so I don't expect unchanged extensions to suddenly start causing problems.
So, anyone else see this problem? (There was another note which talked about the same problem but it was disabled.)
Also -- pardon my paranoia, but -- I need to ask: Since YouTube is owned by Google and Google has its own browser it wants you to use, Chrome, is it possible that Google is intentionally causing some YouTube videos to fail if it sees that they are being sent to Firefox?
(That is not so outlandish I think. Microsoft WAS at one point caught mangling web pages going to certain web browsers other than IE. And these days Google wants to dominate the Internet just as badly as Microsoft does, so why not pull dirty tricks too?)
If this keeps happening I am going to have to try Google's Chrome to see if it somehow manages to play YouTube videos correctly while Firefox does not. But I really do NOT want to install Chrome because I trust Google about as much as I trust Microsoft, which is to say Not At All.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
There have been some issues with Flash 11 in the recent past. This could be a manifestation of that issue. Kindly check this response below to see if this helps you in viewing Flash videos.
Also, if you want to check if this is a flash problem and specifically on youtube, you can try the HTML5 version of Youtube. In this, there are no plugins involved, and the browser natively renders the videos. You can signup for the HTML5 trial by visiting http://youtube.com/html5. Please try that and check if the issue goes away.
Also, in this case, Google might not be doing anything sinister - they generally try to be standards compliant too. You can definitely try installing Google Chrome and test this issue, but we definitely would want you to continue to be a Firefox user :)

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues Adobe Flash Player Help page].
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on '''Settings''' in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
    # Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/>[[Image:fpSettings1.PNG]] <br/>
    # Remove the check mark from '''Enable hardware acceleration'''.
    # Click '''Close''' to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    # Restart Firefox.
This [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player Help - Display Settings page] has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

    Also, try this one too
Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:
    * [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems]]
    * [[Flash 11.3 crashes]]

  • Youtube video stops playing after 11 seconds

Mac Pro / Mountain Lion 10.8.2 / Flash 11.4 - YouTube videos stop playing after 11 secs.  Only just started happening last week - around time when I installed latest Lion upgrade but this may be a red herring.  Tried uninstalling Flash and reinstalling with no change.  Checked/emptied cache.

There are several topics with similar symptoms, but I don't think anybody has found an answer yet, as it only occurs on some few systems.
What I would try if I encountered the same problem:
    try disable Hardware Acceleration (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337)
try update the graphics drivers (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765)

  • YouTube videos stopped playing on V 37.0

Running 37.0 Firefox on Windows 7 - 64 bit. All updates updated. Flash is 17,0,0,134 and checks out at Adobe site.
This afternoon YouTube videos stopped playing. In the center of the frame are circling dots. The video appears to have loaded, as I can move the time slider and see frames at the various times, I just does not play, just gives the circling "loading" dots. YouTube runs fine in IE. In Foxfire, if I go to other sites, like news and videos/ads play just fine.
I disabled all add-ons, set Shockwave & Flash to "always activate" and still the YouTube videos will not play. Seem to download, just not play.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Please also consider an add on for a work around to change HTML5 to the default, however this should have been fixed in version 37.0.1 are you still seeing this issue?

  • Youtube videos stop playing-appears not to be a browser problem

    Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting here, I've always managed to find a solution to my previous mac problems with a little bit of googling around, but not this time so I really hope someone can help me out here.
It's been going on for about 2 months now, certain videos stop playing about halfway, even if the loadbar was way ahead- it just jumps back on 0:00 along with the time counter, the gray spinning circle appears in the middle of the screen and basically you can't do anything other than refreshing the page. Sometimes, after repeating this for 3-4 times, it plays the whole thing, but the time counter will still frozen on 0:00.In the beginning it was only a few videos, now it's pretty much 7 out of 10 and it really is becoming frustrating. I tried resetting Safari, emptying caches and all that jazz, then I installed google chrome hoping it was just a browser thing, but the problem didn't go away. I tried playing the same videos on the family computer and they worked just fine....
Has anyone had the same problem/any idea what's going on?
Thanks in advance for any replies

Thank you so much! It does fix the problem (which is even more confusing, cause as far as I know it's usually the other way round- people have trouble loading hd videos)  at this point I'll just take what I can get : D I'm just really curious why is this all happening....
    Thanks again!

  • TA21328 youtube videos stop playing after few seconds

While watching videos on youtube, sometimes the videos are stopping or freezing after few seconds of play. How can I fix this?

If you have a slower connection and try to watch hd then your computer won't be able to keep up. Could that be the problem? If it is, just click on the quality wheel, and watch at a lower quality, say 480.

  • Youtube Videos Stop Playing

Lately when I go to watch youtube videos the video will play for maybe two seconds before stopping. At first I thought the video was just buffering then I realized that the transparent red line that shows how much the video has loaded was all the way to the end. So I then tried to pause and unpause the video but it still wouldn't play. This is very frustrating. I haven't been able to watch youtube videos on my phone for about a week now. Is anyone else having these problems? Any solutions? Thanks.

I know an update from last week caused a similar problem. But they updated the Youtube app a day after.
Make sure you have the latest Youtube update.

  • All youtube videos stopped playing suddenly today

ALL of them. At once.. Just, few minutes ago I watched one, but then with no explicit or implicit updates they report 'Error happened' in Safari 8 (Yosemite).
Everything is fine in Chrome under the same login.
Computer has been restarted with no success. All Web Sites Data has been cleaned up with no success
    NO Safari extensions are installed.
Is this a result of REMOTE activity affected my Safari? Was it Apple?

I was having the same issues: no YouTube videos. I went a bit deeper and found that videos I had watched before was playing just fine.
Installed the "latest and greatest" flash player. The problem with YouTube continued.
Opened up Firefox and went to a video that was causing the issue (blank video area, comment area always "loading"). It played fine. Stopped the video after the ad and about a minute of the actual video.
Then I quit Firefox and went into Safari and hit that video that was giving me issues. It began playing right where I left off in Firefox. Okay, I know that when I sign into my google account, and go to YouTube, it keeps track of what I watch and allows me to switch platforms/apps and continue to watch the video where I left off.
I had a hunch, I went to another video that was causing me issues and the issue persisted. Went to my home page (top sites) in Safari. Quit Safari. Opened Firefox and went to that video in youTube and sure enough, there was an ad at the beginning of it. Played the ad till I could skip the darn thing and played a minute of the video. Quit Firefox and opened Safari, went to YouTube and in my history, went to that video. It played.
So my takeaway is that there's something askew with the Ads that precede the videos. Safari doesn't "like" them or some such. And since most ads are in flash format, I would hazard a guess that the ads are doing "something" that is stalling Safari.

  • After Mountain Lion install, internet videos stop playing back after only a few seconds. Multiple browsers are affected.

After I installed Mountain Lion, videos streamed from the internet will stop playback after a few seconds of play. Multiple browsers are being affected.

I have this same problem, and I did a clean installation.
    Hardware:
    2009 MacBoook Pro 17" 3.06 C2D; 4 GB RAM, 256 Apple SSD
While loading the browser is quick starting up, I notice a delay to open any website, like it's preloading the entire page versus just loading.  Safari seems like it's a bit sluggish overall with loading web pages.
Did a internet speed test and my U/D rates are the same after the upgrade.

  • Recently when I try to play Youtube videos they start and after about 2 seconds I get "an error occured. Please try again later"

I have the latest version of Firefox and also the latest flash player.
Youtube videos play just fine on internet explorer and google chrome.

There was another security release for Flash today as they are addressing some major security issues this week.
I would recommend changing your Flash plugin to a click to play status. Go into about:plugins and click "Always Ask to Activate" for your flash player.
    However in your troubleshooting information:
    " numAcceleratedWindowsMessage: [u'tryNewerDriver', u'9.6'] "
    suggests to see this:
[[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • Quicktime Plugin/Firefox stops playing mp3 after a few seconds

We've run into a problem with Quicktime Player in Firefox (Win XP) only playing the first few seconds of an mp3. It doesn't happen with all mp3s, but out of the five we've tested four showed this problem... only one of the five played through to the end.
When accessing the mp3 file, quicktime plugin loads with the big Q, takes a few seconds (i.e. seems to be downloading the full file), displays the controller, then starts playing. The progress bar moves quickly to the right and stops when it reaches the far right. For some of the mp3s it's only a second or two, for one it is about 8 seconds. The ones that only play for a second or two are regular music mp3s of about 3-5 minutes in length. The one that plays 8 seconds, is really 17 minutes, 42 seconds long.
All of these seem to play fine with the Quicktime plugin in IE. And all the files play fine in iTunes and Quicktime as local files as well as streaming.
The music files are mp3s generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function (original files are m4a files from the iTunes store).
The longer file (a podcast) was generated by a third party, so I'm not sure what tools were used to generate it, however I've tested two versions generated by iTunes that also did not play past 8 seconds:
    - Original encoding with ID3 tags converted to a different version by iTunes
    - New encoding generated by iTunes using the "Convert to MP3" function
(FWIW, renaming the files doesn't make a difference either.)
I have confirmed that this is happening for a colleague of mine on his computer as well.
Reloading the page/mp3 file (F5), force-reload (control-F5), disabling the cache (using Web-Developer Plugin, or Firebug), clearing the cache (through Firefox's Options->Advanced->Network->Offline Storage settings, or through "Clear Recent History") ... none of these seem to make a difference.
However, I did notice that for the files that weren't working, using Firebug's Net panel, it looks like the plugin starts *and finishes* playing the file before the file is completely downloaded (i.e. the player stops playing and the Net panel still shows the file downloading -- usually for a few seconds more before it is completely downloaded).
(And now the one mp3 file that was playing fine is no longer playing. It too just plays a second or two then stops...)
This is with Firefox 3.6.3 and Quicktime Plugin 7.6.6 on Windows XP Pro.

(Oh, and ignore my comment earlier that this mp3 stopped working. I got confused back there with all the various tests... This file does play fully. The player also waits until the file is fully downloaded before starting to play... As opposed to the others where the player starts and ends playing before they are downloaded completely.)

  • YouTube videos not playing properly after 10.1 update

I am using  firefox 3.6.4 and tried with chrome 5.0.375.86 also, both seem to play the videos sluggish/lagging.. the audio seems to  be fine..everything was fine until the update today to 10.1 . I tried the hardware acc enable/disable, was of no use.

Hi, along with disabling the hardware acceleration feature, it is advised to update the graphic and video drivers to the latest versions.
    See if that helps.

  • How to stop youtube videos from playing after restart

every time I restart firefox (currently 24.1.1 or 14.0.1) any tabs with youtube videos start playing and I have to wait until after restart is complete before I can find it/them.
is there a way to stop this?

I don't know of a way to stop auto-play on restart only. There are some extensions that can stop auto-play in general (i.e., all the time). I haven't tried any of them myself, but it looks as though these might help:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/smartvideo-for-youtube-mytube/ SmartVideo For YouTube]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/stop-youtube-autoplay/ Stop YouTube Autoplay] (updated version not yet reviewed)
