Youview blocks DVD player?

I have recently set up my new YouView box and connected everything up. All works fine.
But when I play a DVD in the player, I get sound but no picture - unless I pull the Youview scart cable out! In which case, the DVD player works fine.
Anyone any ideas how to get round this? Is this a common problem?
Thanks

Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I tried that but could only get one input where I could hear the DVD player but not see the picture.
However, I managed to find an individually-switchable muti-scart cable box (or whatever it is called) at £1.50 from Asda!
Now to use the DVD, I can just use the button on this box to switch off the YouView scart cable (much preferable to pulling the cable out each time) and that does the job.
(I also discussed the problem with a chap in Currys/PC World - whose recommendation was the above - which I had already done. great minds, eh?)

i have a toshiba A100-159 and the dvd is blocked to region 1... is there any official way to unblock it? if not how can i get it to become a region free dvd player?or how can i reset the counter?
thanks in advance for your answers.

    Hi
As official way I can say just service partner, maybe. On the net there you can find some region free applications but this way is definitely illegal.

  • Region of the dvd player blocked

Hello!! I've been trying to know what are the possible way to unblock my dvd player in my mackbook pro. Actually according to the application dvd player, I have only the right to change 4 times the region.Well I did it more than 4 times and now it's stuck in region 1. I need to know how it is possible to make the dvd player multiregion. I'd like to play any dvd, any time at any region. How is it possible to make it? Is there anysoftware, or other? I need solutions cause I spent so much time trying to fix it, and I can't think of anything!!
Could u tell me asap please cos i need to watch certain movies for my masters!

To make your SuperDrive region free you'll need a firmware patch although these are few and far between for the Matishita drives Apple uses. So, your best option is to see if Apple will do a manufactuer reset on your drive. This will get you another 5 changes (you can only do a manufacturer reset so many times as well so this is not a long term solution).
The best option you have is to buy a cheap external drive with which you can patch to be RPC-1 region free.

  • Playing DVD Crashes MBP (no matter what dvd player software I use)

    Current specs:
    OSX 10.6.6
    2.8 GH Core 2 Duo
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    512MB GeForce 9600M GT
I first got my mac book pro from a friend and did a fresh install of OSX. I dont believe I ever tried to play any dvd's on it until now (months later).
Originally when I got installed, I went through and deleted a lot of the default mac apps using appzapper that I didn't want cluttering up my install, and that included "DVD Player".
Fast forward a few months, I try to play DVD in vlc and it crashes vlc. I cant open the file on the disk directly, nor can i just go to "open disc". if i click it it spins up and then it stays at zero and wont play. If i try to view the file right on the dvd with vlc it either crashes or plays a garbled 2-10 seconds and then crashes
I ended up figuring this was because i deleted dvd player and must have deleted some codec or something along with it... after googling i remember people saying they deleted dvd player and had problems. So i got Pacifist and installed dvd player directly onto the computer
Same issue, vlc crashes, and now when i put in a dvd, DVD Player stops responding immediately. if i start up dvd player first with no disk in, it loads fine. when i put the dvd in it just stops responding and wont play.
    so far I have
    1. deleted preferences in dvd player
    2. I'm POSITIVE it's not the dvd. i just watched the dvd in my friends older mac laptop. Likewise, every dvd i rent from redbox will do this so i know its not just this particular dvd
    3. CD's load just fine from the player, just not dvd's
    4. ive tried changing the display interlace quality from the view menu in dvd player
    5. I tried making a new admin account and playing it with dvd player from there and the same thing happened, just stopped responding
    6. I just tried zapping PRAM and NVRAM (command option P + R), still no dice
    7. Okay, i just tried opening in VLC media player with 'no dvd menus' and it didnt crash.. it still didnt play but it at least allowed me to see the error output (see down below the post)
The only thing i can think of is i somehow corrupted some basic fundamental/hardware-software interface driver or soemthing that allows dvd's to be read (codec? i have no idea), as it crashes any dvd app I have tried. (so far only vlc and dvd player). I tried in quicktime but couldnt find how to open a dvd
    Thanks!

Having tried to re-install the DVD Player application it might be worth applying the 10.6.6 combo update (not the update via Software Update). From the threads I've read here it can often help with issues in this kind of area. Other than that it might be worth backing up your files and consider starting with a fresh copy of OS X. For all the space these apps take up I'd probably recommend leaving all the Apple ones alone.
I take it you have the same problem in Front Row too?

  • DVD Player: audio doesnt' work

I was watching a DVD (using DVD Player) and the program blocked and shut down maybe because de DVD surface was scratched. I cleaned the DVD and when I opened the application again, no sound came out, and from that moment any more. I tried to restart the O.S. but anything changed (the audio and output are correct as I can hear Quicktime, iTunes and I didn't touch any option). Thanks

    laurettini,
There might be a little slider switch on the side of the "player remote" (I don't know what it's actually called...) that DVD player displays that raises and lowers your volume.
Make sure it's pushed all the way up.

  • Screenshots of DVD Player

How can I take screenshots of DVD Player? I'd like to convert some frames of our ultrasound video to image files to send to family. I've already been to CNet and Click didn't work and DVD Capture won't work because "Stuffit archives are not supported."

If you can't do it in DVD Player, download free VLC Media Player, play the DVD in that, and take your screen shots. It even has a "Snapshot" command.
Apple DVD Player is known to block Mac OS X screen capture from taking screen shots of DVDs, but it's thought that it was so that people wouldn't screen capture Hollywood movies. I didn't think they would block someone's home video DVD. That's weird.

  • How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

Nothing technical has been discussed. It is blocked because of licensing/copy protection.
I have to buy another DVD player?
The Apple TV is not a DVD player. So if you do not already own a player, then yes you will have to purchase one to view them on your TV.

  • No screen capture when DVD Player is running?!

I have a DVD of my band playing a show that I want to take quick snaps from so I could post it on MySpace, but some genius at Apple decided you shouldn't be allowed to take screenshots with DVD Player is on.
Do they do this with any other program?
I could type out a copyrighted article or book in Word. Download a copyrighted movie as a .mov file off P2P. Take a screenshot and post it as a PDF or JPG.
Better yet, why don't they block YouTube.com so nobody can view stolen, copyrighted material.
It's my DVD, I made it. It is not copyrighted in any way. Yet for some reason they have taken the liberty to ensure I won't be able to take a snapshot of it, because there might be a chance someone would want to take a JPG of a copywrited movie.
I guess I could always download Handbrake and make it a .mov file, THEN take the screen shot. Or maybe Apple will read this and make it so I can't download that program.

Apple didn't decide to do this. To get the decrypting code for their DVD Player they had to sign a license with the DVD consortium. The movie industry sets the license terms and they don't want ANYTHING copied.
Do they do this with any other program?
No, but there are similar issues. For example, Preview will disable the "Save as PDF" print option for some PDF files (such as filled-in PDF forms), the same as Adobe's Acrobat reader does. They might have a PDF license from Adobe that requires this.

The DVD Player application has no way of telling that you are the copyright holder. They may just assume that the maker of a DVD would have all the source material and could get all the screen-shots needed from that.
There is VLC, but it is probably illegal in the USA. There are other screen-shot programs that don't have restrictions against DVDs. Look on VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • HT5517 Displaying Mac screen to my TV via Apple TV but movie playing on DVD Player shows only gray..

The screen for DVD Player and the one on the TV are both solid light gray and no audio. When I double click DVD Player screen on the Mac the picture shows for about 1/2 second then goes gray again... it also zooms to full screen or back to small screen on both displays when I double click. Apple TV is on the same WiFi as the Mac and I can see my Mac desktop on the TV. Only the movie in the DVD Player is grayed out. If I don't try to use Apple TV, I can watch and listen to the movie on the Mac with no problems. Any suggestions on how I can watch the movie on my TV rather than just on the Mac?

Why does that need to be blocked?  I just had the same problem today.  I have had my MacBook and AppleTV for over a year.  It wasn't until now that I was without a dvd player.  I didn't think that would ba a problem.  Now I can't watch my own movies on my own electronics.

  • 10.5.3 and Front Row DVD player crashes

I have been using Front Row with 10.5.2 to play DVDs - seamless experience
Upgraded to 10.5.3 and have been getting regular crash out of front row to home page.
    Is this a known issue?

    Rasterblaster wrote:
Start frontrow GUI using the iMAC remote 'menu' button.
Select DVD and play via the Frontrow GUI using remote only to pass through menu
    Symptom seen:
In the middle of DVD playback MPEG codec glitch (i.e. blocks formed when b or p frames not propertly decode), on other occasions playback stops, image changes to the desktop (what ever it is called in mac speak) then after about 1/2 secs the playback resumes.
Yesterday spotted after I finished watching the standard leopard DVD player icon was left on the screen with an error code (sorry I didn't note the code).
This has happened with a couple of DVDs from the same box set (disk is clean/not scratched). The issue didn't happen with 10.5.2 (but different box set). So I don't know if Apple played with the DVD player in 10.5.3 or its integration with frontrow?
All the readme for 10.5.3 says about video is
''Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices"
This is not directly related but you never know?
Did you do the usual HD and permissions repair before and after upgrading?
You might also zap the PRAM

  • Starting DVD Player automatically at a specified time?

    Hi, strange question:
Is it possible to have my MBP start playing a DVD from a specific point (or continue where I've left it) at a certain time of day?
I have a DVD movie where the character calls out someone's name repeatedly, and I thought it'd be a fun prank to hide my computer in their closet and have it go off around midnight, hehe.
Any automaton scripts I could run or something? The DVD itself need only start at 34 minutes in... or I could have the DVD player open and paused at that point.

Java Application, or method within a running Java application?
To run Java you would have to use the OS native tools.
    Windows Scheduled Tasks
    Newbie: Intro to cron.
To execute a block of code within a running Java VM, you want to look at Timer.

  • DVD Player & Parental Controls

Where can I download DVD Player 2.7, since it is the only version with MPAA rating parental controls? I have DVD Player 4.6.5. Why don't the latest versions of DVD Player have this?

Have you tried looking to see if those controls were moved to the parental controls section of accounts? If they are not there, then just block access to DVD Player on those user accounts you want to control movie watching habits. Then if the person/people those account(s) are assigned to want to watch a movie, decide if to temporarily grant them access based on the rating for that given film. On the bright side, Apple showed off at WWDC a more comprehensive set of parental controls being integrated into Leopard, so hopefully that issue will be taken into account.

  • How use Powerbook G4 as DVD player without it getting hot?

Suggestions please. Began to use older PowerBook G4 as a portable 15" DVD player. The bottom became almost hot to the touch so I hesitate
to continue watching DVDs until I know why so much heat is being generated. Might it have one of the older batteries that should be replaced?
    Thank you very much. VG

Playing any video regardless of source is one of the most processor-intensive tasks you can throw at a computer. The demands on the CPU and the graphics processor are high. I'm reasonable sure the heating you see is normal.
The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and is designed to get hot so air moving under the case takes away the heat. Apple recommends not using their notebook models in your lap without a lapboard because that blocks one of the main cooling systems.
Are you using an external monitor with the Powerbook's lid closed (clamshell more)?  If so, don't close the lid on the PowerBook; heat also escapes from the keyboard area
Notebooks in general run hot due to limited space inside that restricts the size fans that can be used. It's important to know that what "feels" hot is not necessarily dangerous to he computer. You need to get a temp monitoring utility to see actual numbers. Most notebooks will do a safety shutdown if the internal temps approach 100°C/212°F.
I like this free temp monitor:

  • VLC works, DVD Player doesn't

So I can't figure it out. I have been trying for weeks now to get DVD Player to play DVD's (I don't know why it stopped), but it simply won't. Even if it's a movie copied to my hard disk, it simply won't play. If I do get it to sort of play, there's no sound. Most times I can't even get past the FBI warnings.
So then I download VLC and it works perfectly.
    Any ideas...what's going on?!

yikes...I know NOTHING about using Console, but here's something I found. I don't know how much you need so I'll paste it all in. There are several sets of these under /Library/Logs/Console/501:

  • Apple DVD player / region code

I apologize if this is the incorrect forum for this question, but I could not find a forum specific to the Apple DVD player.
Several months ago my internal DVD drive died and I replaced with an external LaCie firewire drive which I purchased from Apple. Until today all I have used it for is burning disks, and for that it has worked flawlessly. Today, however, I needed to use it to view a DVD. When I inserted the DVD i got a pop-up box which stated "Since this is the first use of a DVD disc, the drive region must be initialized before playing." A drop-down box gives me the options of regions 1-6, and 8. When selecting region 1, or any region for that matter, I get an error message which states "There was a problem changing the drive region code," and it gives me an error code of 10007. If I click Cancel the disk ejects and Apple DVD player pops up. Thinking there might be a problem with this disc I have tried several dvd movies. I do not get the pop-up box with the region code choices, instead Apple DVD player pops up, but the movie will not play. On screen it says "Supported Disc not available."
I tried the original disk in my G4 PowerBook and it plays fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The LaCie drivers haven't changed since 2008 or before. Traditionally, computer DVD drives ignore region codes (a region code is a feature which should be illegal, IMO). So, unless your computer is new, I'm guessing the region code block is programmed into 'DVD Player'.
I've a LaCie external DVD drive, and I found the free MPlayer produces a much better image than 'DVD Player'. Haven't tried VLC in several years, but it's considered my many the best.

Be sure the external drive is being accessed. (You might want to stock up on such software while that for Tiger is still available.)
