Z-index oddity

Question

Hi,
I'm trying to set up the z-index of an item so that it always appears ontop of the Flash Player but I keep getting the following error:
"1119: Access of possibly undefined property z through a reference with static type flash.text:TextField."
My code is:
public class CaptionArea extends Sprite
        public function CaptionArea()
            super();
            this._textField = new TextField();
            this.addChild(_textField);
        private var _textField:TextField;
        public function get textField():TextField
            return _textField;
     public function get z():Number
            return _textField.z;
           public function set z(val:Number):void
            _textField.z = val;
Can anyone help?! I can't figure out what's going wrong as I'm using _textfield to set the height and width of the object fine...

This is what I have so far but it's still appearing under the player:
var subtitlesIndex:uint = this.getChildIndex(player) +1;
addChildAt(_subtitles, subtitlesIndex);
addChildAt(_subtitlesArea, subtitlesIndex);
setChildIndex(subtitles, subtitlesIndex);
setChildIndex(subtitlesArea, subtitlesIndex);
Any ideas?!
