Z-rotation of a 3D element parented to a moving NULL layer: WEIRD behavior

Hi all,
Never encountered this before!
I have a bunch of little 3D elements parented to a null layer that moves along the X axis (for consistent horizontal movement of all elements).
Separate X and Y rotations on the individual elements works great, but as soon as I try Z rotation, I get really strange "planar" rotations. When I un-parent a 3D element, the Z rotation works great...only now it's no longer parented!
What's up with THAT? You can perform X and Y rotation on a 3D element parented to something else, but not Z rotation?? I don't understand this at all.
Anyone have any insights into this?

Thanks Aaron.
I don't know if the fact that the NULL object was scaled had anything to do with this, but I ended up relegating each 3D object to its own composition, and then parented those to the NULL object, which worked.
Probably the long way around, but next time I'll know to look for any scaling issue before I start :|

    how do I rotate photos in photoshop elements?
    These show as rotated in the organizer, but revert to unrotated when sent to Elements.

    Good luck with your rotation.

  • Action written in CS4 won't run correctly in Elements 11 - specif. the "selective color" layer

    I created an action using Adobe Photoshop CS4, and it runs correctly in CS4.  When I save and load the action into Elements 11,  there is a problem with the selective color layer.  The selective color layer shows up in the layer stack along with the expected message that it can't be edited b/c it was created in the full version of Photoshop. However, the layer itself does not have any color/changes in it.
    In Photoshop, the selective color layer makes the photo look pink.  When I run the action in Elements11,the selective color layer does absolutely nothing to the photo.  I do have the eye turned "on" to view the layer, and it's set at the correct blending options & opacity (normal, 100%).
    If I run the action in Photoshop, save the file with all the action-created layers, and reopen the file in Elements 11, THEN the selective color layer shows its correct pink color.  But when I run the action as a stand-alone action in Elements11, it does not.
    Can anyone offer help as to why this is happening? Is there something special I need to do to make the action work correctly in Elements 11? My understanding was that it should RUN and create the layers correctly, although some of them will not be editable in Elements11. However, as it stands, it is not creating them with the correct color.
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    You probaly need to record the action in a little different way in photoshop cs4 to get the selective color adjustment layer to work.
    Try something like this:
    1. In photoshop cs4 add an selective color adjustment layer, but don't do any adjustments and stop recording the action.
    2. Undo the selective color adjustment layer and then double click on on the selective color adjustment layer step in the actions panel
       and when the dialog opens set your adjustments and click ok.
    Now it should work in pse 11:

    I read that Revel is free for iPod users.  Is it also free for PC users?  My backup for Elements 7 was recently moved there.

    Revel is free for all available platforms (iMac,iPad,iPhone, iPod). On windows there is no desktop client but you can use https://www.adoberevel.com/ (Revel's web client). Detailed info is available on https://www.adoberevel.com/pricing
    Please let me know if you need more info on it.

    is it possible to parent an object or null object to a single point on a shape path? Beam is closest thing I can find but this feels hacky to me, and would be nice to have a fill too.

    No way. Even expressions cannot access mask/ shape layer paths.

  • Rotate Photos in Premiere Elements 9

    I created several photo slideshows on Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.  I went to create a DVD with Adobe Premiere Elements 9 with slideshow to be a chapter.  When the slideshows were moved into the Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to create menus and burn the DVD, several of the photos in different slideshows were rotated 90 degrees.
    Question:  How do I rotate individual photos to the correct orientation?

    This "problem" bites many users. The "answer" is that in cataloging apps, such as Organizer, there is the capability to alter how an images DISPLAYS, but that does NOT alter the pixels in any way. PrE will see the pixels, and ignore the metadata on the display. This ARTICLE goes into more detail. The "fix" is to actually Rotate the Images, to rearrange their pixels, and then Save the file. This is easily done in Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements.
    Good luck,

  • How to rotate an insert in photo without rotating entire photo in Elements 11

    On Adobe Elements 11 can you rotate an insert to a photo without rotatine entire photo?

    Make a selection of the object which you wish to rotate, using one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool
    Place the selection on its own layer (CTRL+J)
    Press CTRL+T to get the transform tool. Hover the cursor outside the box until you see a curved arrow, then rotate. You can adjust the size of the object with the corner handles of the bounding box, if necessary
    Open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers in the layers palette, and use the clone tool to touch up any spots that need it after the rotation

  • Photoshop elements 10 animated gifs show one layer only

    I don't like this new version of photoshop elements (photoshop elements 10). When I try to edit an animated gif file, it says I can only view one layer and the rest will be lost. Why is this?

    Known issue. This is actually because Photoshop CSx used a GIF plug-in that didn't support opening GIF files as layers. That same plug-in was sent over to PSE in version 9. You can get the plug-in from earlier versions to fix this:

  • PS Elements 6.0, Vista: Moving Files

    I need to move my massive set of files off of my computer and onto an external drive (I need the space on my computer hard drive for work). I have all the files backed up already on a third hard drive. Here is the problem.
    1) In order to not lose the tags for all the photos, I did "move" within photoshop, assuming that the program would then be able to know where the photos were now placed. However, when I did this operation it did not know where the photos were, so when I go to a photo in the Organizer and call it up, it has to search for it. I direct it to the new location on the external hard drive that now has the photos, but it seems to need me to do this one-by-one, which will take days with 10,000 photos. Is there a way to have it do one massive "connect" process with all photos, so I do not have to do it one-by-one?
    2) In copying, it did not retain the file structure. I have all photos in files such as "Montreal with Family" or "Creative photos" which helps me locate them if I do not use photoshop. But these were not retained. The result is one massive file on the new hard drive. I am not sure why the move process did not include the file structure. How can I do a "move" that includes this file structure?
    Item #1 and #2 are related. One solution is to just copy all the files, with the existing file structure, using Windows explorer, but then do a collective "hook" up from Elements 6.0 to these new files, if possible.
    3) I think that the tags are really kept with the thumbnails in Elements -- not in the photo files themselves. Is that right? If so, while I have always backed up the photos themselves many times, it seems that I should also backup the thumbnail structure and tags that Photoshop uses. Where is the file kept with that information, so I can make sure to back it up?
    4) While I am at it, I bought Lightroom because I heard it was better at managing files, but can not figure out how to get Lightroom to recognize the hundreds of tags I built up within Elements. Is there a way to do that? Until I know how to do that, I will not switch over to Lightroom to manage files.

    Ray,
    It sounds like you moved your photos to the external drive using the File > Move command. As you discovered, that command moves individual files and does not preserve the folder structure. (A point of terminology to avoid future confusion: a file is an individual photo, document, movie, etc. A folder is the thing that contains many files.)
    I think you ended up with lots of missing files in your catalog because of a bug in the PSE 6 Move command. When you move a file into a folder that already has a file of the same name, that second file is permanently deleted. Since you were moving all the files in your catalog into a single folder, you were bound to end up with many that had the same name.
    To move all your photo folders to the external drive preserving their structure, you can use Display > Folder Location view:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos
    > 3) I think that the tags are really kept with the thumbnails in Elements -- not in the photo files themselves. Is that right? The locations of your photos, along with tags, albums, stacks, dates/times, captions, thumbnails, etc. are stored in your catalog. You can find the location of your current catalog by doing Help > System Info. You should definitely back it up. If you use PSEs builtin backup, it will do that for you. But if you prefer to use a general-purpose backup utility, then make sure your catalog is being backed up, for sure.
    > how to get Lightroom to recognize the hundreds of tags I built up within Elements.
    Lightroom 2 can import PSE 6 catalogs.

  • XML Element to string conversion returning null

    Hi,
    When i try to convert XML Element to string using toString() API, it returns something like [device: null] where device is element tag.
    Code is as follows -
    Document xmlDoc;
    DOMParser parser = (DOMParser)Class.forName("org.apache.xerces.parsers.DOMParser").newInstance();
    parser.setFeature( "http://apache.org/xml/features/dom/defer-node-expansion", true );
    parser.parse(new InputSource(new StringReader(tableStr)));
    xmlDoc = parser.getDocument();
    Element root = xmlDoc.getDocumentElement();
    NodeList nodeList = root.getElementsByTagName("device");
    Element deviceNode = (Element)nodeList.item(nodeList.getLength()-1);
    System.out.println(deviceNode.toString()); //prints [device: null] ????
    System.out.println(deviceNode.getAttribute("ipAddress")); //prints correct ip address
    Any idea why i am getting [device: null] when trying to convert Element to String though attribute value is retrieved.
    Thanks,

  • Runtime ik springs: child nodes break when a parent node is moved

    There is something wrong with IK armature springs when used in runtime mode. Child nodes become disjointed with user interaction of parent nodes.
    Drag spring on right from different points to see bug here: http://gardenofpossibilities.org/flash/ik_spring_runtime_bug/spring_runtimebug.html
    I filed this as a bug, but wanted to mention it here in case others have a similar problem or anyone has a workaround:
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Build simple movieclip based armature
    2. add springs to bones
    3. set armature to runtime and publish
    Results:
    Armature child nodes become disjointed with user interaction of parent nodes. Same disjointed behavior occurs when armature is moved with actionscript 3 ik.mover.
    Expected results:
    Armature nodes should remain properly connected when user or actionscript 3 ik_mover moves any node.
    My Analysis:
    When springs are 0 (no spring) armature works correctly. It appears that the problem is caused by child nodes pivoting at parent node head, when they should actually pivot at parent node tail. Also, when armature becomes disjointed, dragging or moving tail node (furthest from root) restores joints.
    I've posted and example of the bug here: http://gardenofpossibilities.org/flash/ik_spring_runtime_bug/spring_runtimebug.html
    ...and a .zip archive of the fla: http://gardenofpossibilities.org/flash/ik_spring_runtime_bug/
    Please enlighten me on what is wrong, how to fix (if possible). If this is a documented bug, please provide a reference to it.
    Thanks!

    I posted this two months ago. Does anybody have anything to add on this issue? Are there any Adobe programmer/engineers out there? I've even filed a bug report, but have not received any feedback. Not a peep. Please?

  • Rotating icons in a circle while remaining horizontal

    Hi everyone,
    I have been searching for a tutorial but havent been able to find one.
    I have aligned a number of icons in a circle  and I want them to rotate clockwise, while remaining in a horizontal position.
    Can anyone please explain to me how to go about?
    This is how my icon alignment looks like:
    Thank you.

    Make sure the anchor point for all of the graphics is in the exact center
    Place a null at the exact center of your circle
    Parent all the outside graphics to the null
    Reveal the rotation property of one of the graphics and the null layer
    Add an expression to the graphic's rotation property and then delete everything in the expression type a - sign and then drag the pickwhip to the Nulls rotation property.
    Select the rotation property of the graphic and then do Edit>Copy Expression Only
    Select all the other graphics and paste
    Animate the rotation property of the null. The expression reverses the rotation of the null in the graphics
    That's it. Should take you about 2 minutes.
    Here's a CS6 project file.

  • Bugreport: View looses current row if user parameters are passivated!

    Hi
    I think I've discovered a bug in JDeveloper:
    I realized that a ViewObject is loosing its current row under the following circumstances:
    - a user parameter is passivated in method "prepareForPassivation" AND
    - the ViewObject is passivated, removed, recreated and reactivated (pooling)
    See the following example:
      protected void prepareForPassivation(Document out,
                                           Element parent)
        super.prepareForPassivation(out, parent);
        Element userdata = out.createElement("SamUserData");
        parent.appendChild(userdata);
        // create tag named "myData"
        Element elem = out.createElement("mSecurityLevel");
        userdata.appendChild(elem);
        elem.setAttribute("Value", "4);
      } This code makes the current row to be lost if passivation occures. For testing you should set the following parameters:jbo.ampool.resetnontransactionalstate = false
    jbo.ampool.dynamicjdbccredentials = false
    jbo.dofailover = false
    jbo.maxpoolcookieage = -1
    jbo.ampool.timetolive = 30000
    jbo.ampool.initpoolsize=0
    jbo.ampool.maxpoolsize=5000
    jbo.recyclethreshold=0
    jbo.ampool.monitorsleepinterval=500
    jbo.ampool.maxavailablesize=0
    jbo.ampool.minavailablesize=0
    jbo.ampool.maxinactiveage=1000 This parameters will cause heavy pooling even if you access by two browser sessions only.
    If anyone from oracle can have a look at this I'd be happy. Unfortunately I do not know how to workaround this problem, so any hints are appreciated.
    Thanks

    And here comes a workaround:
    First: All user data will be passivated below a common node ("SamUserData") in "prepareForActivation". See code sample above.
    Second: "prepareForActivation" will be overridden to look like this:  protected void prepareForActivation(Element parent)
        // apply a bugfix to prevent current row to be lost if userdata is passivated
        fixVoActivationBug(parent);
        super.prepareForActivation(parent);
        // find common node "SamUserData"
        Element userdata = (Element) findChildByTagname(parent, "SamUserData");
        // read user value
        Element elem = (Element) findChildByTagname(userdata, "mSecurityLevel");
        mSecurityLevel = elem.getAttribute("Value");
      } And here comes the bugfix code:  public static void fixVoActivationBug(Element parent)
        // find user data
        Element userdata = (Element) parent.getFirstChild();
        if (userdata==null || !userdata.getNodeName().equals("SamUserData"))
          return;  // no userdata found, nothing to do
        // move userdata element to end of parent tag (this is the bugfix)
        parent.removeChild(userdata);
        parent.appendChild(userdata);
      }I'm quite sure that this is a serious bug in the BC4J passivation and activation logic!
    Thanks

  • Trouble with shadows

    I'm having trouble with lights in AE CS5 on a PC.The project uses the 3D lights and layers to create a shadow all of which must be parented to a moving 3D layer. It is a bit tough to explain so I have attached a link to a file that causes the erro below. If I render the file linked below, the shadow "pops" out of place. If I ram preview, it works as expected.

    Anyone know why this is happening?

    > I've tracked it down to when Motion Blur gets activated and there is animation on the Light layer. Cast shadows become offset.
    Try modifying the Shutter Phase in the motion blur settings.

  • Scaling two layers up without losing position

    Greetings,
    I've got two video layers, one a standard clip and the other a motion-tracked layer with a mask, parented to a null object. (I've made a girl's body red, and her face black and white)
    I've got key frames set on the masked layer for layer position and mask shape.
    Both layers are at 70%. I would like to scale them up, but whenever I do I lose the position of the face, it ends up moving to the right. Is it a problem with scaling something after it has position keyframes?
    Any way to fix this?
    The closest thing I found to a answer was to parent everything to a null layer, then scale the null layer. But since I've already got the face parented to a null layer, I'm not sure where to go. This is a noob question I know and I searched for a answer, honest! But I'm not even sure how to phrase my search terminology for this.

    A simple answer as I suspected! Thank you so much. I've had casual experience with AE for many years, but am now really trying to take it to the next level with motion tracking and compositing. So I will have many more questions I'm sure. I appreciate everyone's patience with me. Cheers!
