Z2 Tablet release?

I would like to know why the Z2 Tablet is on the shelf at many stores in the US but I can't get it directly from Sony.  The people at the Sony store tell me it is not released yet in the US.
I would prefer to buy the unit directly from sony for waranty and suport issues, but I'm begining to loose patients, and the people I talk to at sony will not give me any information.
Is there any reason why I should not buy it off the shelf at a local store then? Or amazon? Or one of the many other online sites?  It seems to be available just about everywhere EXCEPT from sony!

I contacted sony via the link you provided.  The representative I spoke with advised me to purchase a different product and that sony had no plans for releasing the Z2 in the US.
It seemed like a rather odd response.  I don't know if they were just trying to get me to go away, unload other products, or hint at future plans.
Anyway you look at it, it is obvious that the Z2 will not be available in the US anytime soon, and doubtfully even this year.
Maybe we will get lucky and they will release it for chrismas.

Do Not Anger the Alpha Android
Google cracks down on the chaos of Android Land; some mobile partners aren't happy
By Ashlee Vance and Peter Burrows
Playtime is over in Android Land. Over the last couple of months Google (GOOG) has reached out to the major carriers and device makers backing its mobile operating system with a message: There will be no more willy-nilly tweaks to the software. No more partnerships formed outside of Google's purview. From now on, companies hoping to receive early access to Google's most up-to-date software will need approval of their plans. And they will seek that approval from Andy Rubin, the head of Google's Android group.
This is the new reality described by about a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem. Some of those affected include LG, Toshiba, Samsung, and even Facebook, which has been trying to develop an Android device. There have been enough run-ins to trigger complaints with the Justice Dept., according to a person familiar with the matter. The Google that once welcomed all comers to help get its mobile software off the ground has become far more discriminating—especially for companies that want to include Google services such as search and maps on their hardware. Google also gives chip and device makers that abide by its rules a head start in bringing Android products to market, according to the executives.
When Android hit the scene in 2008, Google had a tantalizing pitch: Android was "open source." That is, Google would do the hard work of developing the code, and hardware and software makers were free to use the system at no charge. Carriers and device makers relished the idea of not paying royalties. Android became the people's mobile software, a free zone that contrasted with the closed worlds of the iPhone (AAPL) and BlackBerry (RIMM). HTC, Motorola (MMI), and Acer could avoid spending billions developing their own operating systems and customize Android with unique services. Carriers got a raft of slick new devices to sell. Consumers enjoyed more choice. And Google's search-advertising business could tap the vast mobile phone market.
Android's share of the smartphone market surged from 9 percent in 2009 to an industry-leading 31 percent worldwide. "I don't think we've seen anything like Android in terms of gaining share," says Bill Gurley, general partner at the venture capital firm Benchmark Capital.
As Google introduced Android updates, each named after a sweet, devices of varying capabilities flooded the market. Some are polished smartphones that used the "Gingerbread" version of the software; others are clunky tablets released before the latest "Honeycomb" update was ready. It isn't easy for consumers to keep up—and the same goes for software makers, who have to retool apps for every version and device to give their products a consistent look and feel.
Google's Rubin, a mobile industry veteran, anticipated such market fragmentation. That's why when Google prepares a new version of Android, it selects a chipmaker and a device maker so that the first smartphones and tablets show off all the bells and whistles. With the first version, for example, Google worked in tandem with Qualcomm (QCOM) and HTC. That first Android smartphone turned HTC into a worldwide brand, and Qualcomm's chips now power 60 percent of Android devices, according to Strategy Analytics. With the latest version, the lucky duo was Nvidia (NVDA) and Motorola. "We know we won't get it first every time," says Rob Chandok, senior vice-president for software strategy at Qualcomm. He says Qualcomm has sped up its testing procedures to try to get new versions of Android onto its chips within three weeks of getting the code.
For the never-anointed—Dell (DELL) and Acer, for example—Android Land can be a harsh place. Hardware makers outside the club often follow their rivals to stores by several months, a virtual death sentence in this market.
Google says its procedures are about quality control, fixing bugs early, and building toward a "common denominator" experience, says John Lagerling, director of global Android partnerships at Google. "After that, the customization can begin."
Over the past few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Google has been demanding that Android licensees abide by "non-fragmentation clauses" that give Google the final say on how they can tweak the Android code—to make new interfaces and add services—and in some cases whom they can partner with. Google's Rubin says that such clauses have always been part of the Android license, but people interviewed for this story say that Google has recently tightened its policies. Facebook, for example, has been working to fashion its own variant of Android for smartphones. Executives at the social network are unhappy that Google gets to review Facebook's tweaks to Android, say two people who weren't comfortable being named talking about the business. Google has also tried to hold up the release of Verizon (VZ) Android devices that make use of Microsoft's (MSFT) rival Bing search engine, according to two people familiar with the discussions. (emphases is mine- DonM)
It's these types of actions that have prompted the gripes to the Justice Dept., says a person with knowledge of the matter. Google spokeswoman Shari Yoder Doherty declined to comment on Google and its partners or any complaints to the government.
Google has also started delaying the release of Android code to the public, putting smaller device makers and developers at a disadvantage. On Mar. 24, Bloomberg Businessweek reported Google won't widely release Honeycomb's source code for the foreseeable future.
The company's moves are hardly unprecedented in such a fast-moving industry. Google owes it to its partners and consumers to prevent Android from running amok. And yet murmurs abound that Android's master has tightened up too much—that its policies limit licensees' ability to differentiate their products. "The premise of a true open software platform may be where Android started, but it's not where Android is going," says Nokia (NOK) Chief Executive Stephen Elop, a former Microsoft executive who recently inked a deal with his former employer instead of Google. He says he did so in part because he thought he would have more opportunity to innovate atop Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software.
In the PC realm, Microsoft habituated its partners to expect equal access to new versions of Windows. If anything, says Gartner (IT) analyst Michael Gartenberg, the software giant was equal-opportunity to a fault. "Microsoft often got criticized for treating all partners the same, whether they were doing great work or mediocre work," he says. "Google seems to have no problem with playing favorites."
The bottom line: Despite grumblings, Google's Android mobile operating system is still open—it's just getting more heavily policed.

Do you really believe that samsung and vzw did not release froyo because of those of us defending ourselves? In the end they may blame us but they have no credibility with the habitual lying that they have done!

  • What download is available for an Asus tablet running Android and what is the latest version/release?

I cannot access my electricity account because my Firefox release is earlier than 3.6. When I go to check available downloads for my Asus Tablet which runs Android it shows the Linux version as available and when I look for the Android version it indicates it is for phones using Android. Will the Phone (mobile) work on my Asus Tablet and what is the latest version/release?

Firefox for Android is compatible with tablets, including your Asus Transformer tablet. I recommend installing '''[https://market.android.com/details?id=org.mozilla.firefox_beta Firefox 9 Beta]''', because it includes a new interface designed especially for Android tablets.

  • Problem push and hold on a Surface Pro tablet's touch screen

    Hi,
I tried posting this before, but I can't find my origional post so I hope I'm not spamming accidentally.
I have a problem with my program on a Windows 8.1 Surface Pro tablet. I programmed a button to be 'push-and-hold', but when I touch the tablet nothing happens until I release my finger. This briefly controls the button. When I connect a USB mouse to the tablet, it responds normally; when I press the left mouse button: the button in my program goes down until I release the mouse button. I tried about every setting in the Touch section of the Windows control panel without any succes.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • For what reason on my tablet with OS Android 4.1 does not work flash on the sites?

Hi! I recently bought a Google Nexus 7 tablet with Android 4.1 operating system and on my tablet does not work flash sites. Why adobe does not release a new version of flash for android 4.1? Why it was necessary to buy a company Macromedia, if adobe does not want to develop web technology? I think against Adobe can sue for violation of antitrust

    I found this for example:

  • Did you know the tablets are now available with the Edge program?

While tablets are now able to be purchased with the Edge, the Device Payment Plan has been discontinued. So, if you want to pay over 12 months, to keep unlimited data, you are out of luck. Either full price, or lose it and use Edge.
Just another way for Verizon to get rid of unlimited.

I would check again. The problem is when you went to a corporate store and that is the only way to get it. The stores were telling customers that Verizon's device payment plan was only for tablets.
That is the first lie on their parts. The second thing the store would tell customers that if you used the plan you would still lose unlimited data, lie two.
You could not grandfather in a plan such as the device payment plan. Grandfathered to whom? Those who already choose it and are on it?  Those who got grandfathered in how? Maybe a wrong choice of word in your post.
Like Ann154 the plan is still showing on the Verizon wireless site.
I also called my former account executive at Verizon and he said he knew of no discontinuance of the program.
So unless you have advance information via working for Verizon wireless I would wait for the news release.
In your case I would go to a corporate store and insist on them honoring the Device Payment Plan. Maybe mention your attorney, or a state regulatory agency etc.
    Good Luck

  • X230t and Windows 8 - tablet rotate and control buttons don't work

I am the proud owner of a new x230 tablet and I couldn't resist the tempation to load up Windows 8 on it.  Overall I have found the operating system to work fairly well on the system as installed "out of the box"; however, I have noticed that when the computer is put in tablet mode the screen doesn't rotate, even if the rotate hardware button is pressed.  Has anyone else encountered this and if so is there a solution other then waiting for the official release of the operating system and windows 8 certified drivers.
    Thanks

This is for win7 but should also work in win8 because it is a simple configuration thing:

  • Bug 769476 - sync from Mobile Firefox (smartphone or tablet) will disorganize the order of bookmarks on desktop

    Hello,
Normally, I've been using Firefox sync on desktops (home and at work, all running on Arch Linux and one Windows desktop) until now only, without any bigger problems.
I've bought an tablet last week (Nexus 7, with Android 4.2 after update).
After I installed the Mobile Firefox (version 18 was just fresh) onto the tablet, have linked via my account to the sync.
After initial sync finished, I noticed first disorder of my bookmarks on my desktop, without knowing more about the source of the problem at first.
Have been observing and performing various tests the last days, and have come to an conclusion, that the source of this is the Mobile Firefox on my tablet.
Every time I had to restore (fortunatelly I'm performing backups of these) my bookmarks on my desktop to regain the order I want.
I have to disable the sync on the Mobile Firefox in order to stop this bookmarks disorganization.
Afterwards, the problem of bookmarks disorder on my desktops is gone, just until I reenable the sync on Mobile Firefox, then it gets broken again.
By disorder/disorganization of bookmarks I mean this:
    1. normal working status as desired when Mobile Firefox ain't synchronizing:
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    F
    2. broken status after Mobile Firefox sync. enabled (the order may change randomly):
    A
    C
    E
    F
    D
    B
-- but on the tablet's Mobile Firefox, the bookmarks order is being held as far as I've noticed.
I've already tried to clear my entire Mobile Firefox profile, in order to get rid of all Mobile Firefox settings and bookmars, to start on the tablet with a clean shield. Haven't helped, it always breaks the bookmarks order on the desktops again once newly reconnected via sync.
Unfortunatelly, I don't have no other tablet device at hand to test in elsewhere, thus to confirm or deny, whether this is lonely problem on my table only, or a globale Mobile Firefox problem.
Is this some sort of Mobile Firefox bug?
Any other ideas about what to check/change in order to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    ---- update 20130115 ---
Have just tried to enable the sync even on my smartphone (HTC Desire S, Android 2.3.6), where I used the Mobile Firefox sync before, but have disabled the sync few weeks ago (that time using ver. 17), as the Mobile Firefox started to trigger the sync very often with these new versions, and with one core CPU smarphone, it always took quite long to finish.
Since then, I was forced to perform Factory Reset due to some another unrelated problem.
Afterwards, new version 18 was released, I still wansn't using the sync on the smartphone.
But after I opened this question, just to test it I've reenabled the sync on the smartphone (having already ver.18 installed), waited for the sync to finish on both, smartphone first, following on the desktop, and what a surprise, the bookmarks order did screw up again.
Thus, it's not just my tablet affected, but smartphone is as well.
Now just to differentiate, whether perhaps my sync account with my data is broken somehow, or if the Mobile Firefox sync is indeed the the reason even globaly, not just with me?
    But how to differentiate it?
Shall I perhaps open an bug at the bugzilla.mozilla.org ?
have just discovered, that bug already reported https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=769476

Windows 7, Linux, and Android each sort Alpha-Numeric strings differently.

  • Windows 8 Release Preview on Mac Mini mid 2011

I was wondering if its possible to install Windows 8 Release Preview on a Mac Mini mid 2011 via Bootcamp (Mainly for gaming purposes)

I've finally got it installed on my HP Touchsmart 610-1000t (or whatever the number is).....
    Apparently it's a graphics card/driver issue.
I downloaded the enterprise final release and it did the same thing to me (black screen etc etc).
In the end, I highly doubt some of these models are compatible with windows 8 if the final release is giving me the same problem.  The only difference is- now the sleep button worked, so I fiddled around with it until I got it fully installed (user created).  After doing so, I booted into Safe mode and disabled the graphics driver/restarted and it booted up fine/works fine.  Every now and then it crashes on IE10.  I wasn't able to test the touch capabilities during the releases between developer and final, so it wasn't until now I can finally test the functionarlity of ALL the gesture functionality.  I can say, the combination of the touch screen desktop and short cut keys makes everything so much quicker and easier.  I perfer windows 8 over windows 7 on my touchscreen, finally the touchscreen experience is much better! Of course I still use my keyboard and mouse.  The touch pinning/swiping is awesome.  I can't say the same for normal desktops in a corporate environment (without touchscreens).....I can say however- windows 8 tablets would be really nice in place of my Ipad or my laptop that I carry around from meeting to meeting, thus the reason I'm waiting for the Surface!  CItrix and apps can only take you so far.

  • Autodetection not properly setting up wacom tablet

I have a tablet PC, and recently upgraded to xserver 1.6.  X would freeze on startup roughly 50% of the time until (based on this thread) I removed xorg.conf (except for DontZap).  Now X doesn't freeze on start, but the tablet is only being partially detected.
I can use it to move the cursor fine.  The eraser does not work.
'xsetwacom list dev' does not detect any devices.  This means I can't get or set any properties, recalibrate, rotate, or any other goodies.
output of 'xinput list' seems to indicate that it's being set up as some kind of generic plug-and-play device.

grateful for any suggestions anyone has beyond this point.

well, the answer is easy but I am annoyed to have wasted so much time figuring it out.
it is this: the linuxwacom-dev package seems to have installed hal-setup-wacom to /usr/libexec/, and as a result hal cannot find it.
    just doing:
    cp /usr/libexec/hal-setup-wacom /usr/lib/hal
gives me a working eraser (after restarting hal and then restarting X).
EDIT: also, if "xinput --list --short" does not list devices with the standard names stylus/eraser, then to get xsetwacom running properly put this in a script and run it from /etc/rc.local: (script stolen from another forum)
    #! /bin/sh
for udi in `hal-find-by-property --key input.x11_driver --string wacom`
    do
    type=`hal-get-property --udi $udi --key input.x11_options.Type`
    hal-set-property --udi $udi --key info.product --string $type
    done
I tried to write this logic into the fdi policy, but somehow couldn't get it to work.

  • Multiple Tablet Z questions

Got my Tablet Z on Saturday to replace a Toshiba Excite 10. Biggest reason for the Xperia Tablet Z was weight (finally Sony does a tablet Sony Style...) Biggest concern with the Xperia Tablet Z is heavily skinned Android and an expectation/fear that Sony will not support Android/follow the changes to it in a timely way. This is a premium priced tablet. Doesn't seem like too much to ask. My benchmark for supporting Android is my Galaxy Nexus... Maybe AOSP? Anyway, on to why I'm posting:
    Some questions:
Chrome bookmarks always opens to Mobile bookmarks / Sony--any way to change besides deleting Sony folder?
Email delete always confirms--any way to turn off?
Backup & restore says it can backup to the cloud--really? how?
had to disable the shipped Calendar app and install Google Calendar to get latest Calendar features--so sad...
using Smart Connect View event as shipped: it starts SensMe when dropped in the cradle; but when I remove tablet from cradle, TuneIn Radio is current running app--why??!?
any way to soft reset it? what's the thing that looks like a switch between the USB port and the serial number barcodes?
    Bonus:
(probably rhetorical) I've read about a "timely" update to 4.2--4.2 has been out for almost nine months, wouldn't "timely" have been at first ship?
white paper for devs lists "eCompass" app but can't find...--what is eCompass?
white paper lists "Google Wallet" app but isn't installed/won't work--guessing this is a WiFi vs. LTE tablet issue?!?
Thanks in advance for any info!

well, hate to burst your bubble, but most sony update came late.
Chrome bookmarks always opens to Mobile bookmarks / Sony--any way to change besides deleting Sony folder?
you mean the bookmarks? or the homepage? you can change your homepage by going to browser>settings>general.
Email delete always confirms--any way to turn off?
    - what email client are you using? try going to the settings and see if there are options to change, and be aware that if sync is active and you deleted an email on your computer, it would also delete it on the phone.
Backup & restore says it can backup to the cloud--really? how?

i guess you solved your problem
using Smart Connect View event as shipped: it starts SensMe when dropped in the cradle; but when I remove tablet from cradle, TuneIn Radio is current running app--why??!?
try to see the settings on the app, you can remove or disable the the app from firing up when removed from the dock.
any way to soft reset it? what's the thing that looks like a switch between the USB port and the serial number barcodes?
    settings>privacy>settings reset
this might help you. Xperia™ Tablet Z User guide (2 MB), Xperia™ Tablet Z White paper (537 kB)
(probably rhetorical) I've read about a "timely" update to 4.2--4.2 has been out for almost nine months, wouldn't "timely" have been at first ship?
the tablet was designed and made 9 months before the release of 4.2, so i guess they stick to 4.1 than to change everything at last moments. sony has been struggling with "timely" updates,
white paper for devs lists "eCompass" app but can't find...--what is eCompass?
some apps are not available on all market areas, you may try searching on google play.
white paper lists "Google Wallet" app but isn't installed/won't work--guessing this is a WiFi vs. LTE tablet issue?!?
    nope ,same reason above.

  • Why does Flash player not work on samsung galaxy tablets?

Hello, I am wondering why they do not have flash player for samsung galaxy tab 3? I just recently got the 8.0 sized one and it has great features, but no flash player? To have an up to date electronic device, and older electronic devices carry it,but you won't put it on new devices? Is there a way to get it to work or download it? It has stopped me from viewing many different things on my tablet unfortunately and this may cause me to return it.

Android dropped all support for Flash last year (June 2012).
Going back to 2006, when Apple released the first iPhone and iOS 1, Steve Jobs was insistent that it be made incompatible with Flash Player because (in his words) playing Flash content is processor consumptive and kills batteries, and well as shortening battery life in mobile devices. Android came along a little while later, but their reason for droppiong Flash last year was the same.
Adobe continued developing "security updates" for the Flash Player that worked with older versions of Android, but even that ended in September of this year. Adobe will not continue development of a product for an incompatible format.
Android recommends either "Dolphin" or "Puffin" browser from the GooglePlay store (both are free). They use "server side" technology to play Flash content without taxing your tablet or phone's processor.

  • How come iTunes is not compatable on my Surface tablet with windows 8?

I got this tablet and it wasmeant to replace my older laptop. But everytime i try downloading itunes for my phone, it says 'The app cant be run on my PC". This is a huge reason of why  even got the tablet. As i talked to a technician for windows, they said it was up to apple to make it compatible. I was curious when this is going to happen because it not being compatable is a big pain considering how iTunes hold all the info that my iPhone holds.

    Okay, here's what's going on:
    1. The Windows 8 name is actually applied to two operating systems that are designed to look and feel the same- one for your standard "x86" processors like the ones made by Intel and AMD that power most PCs and laptops, and one for "ARM" (and ARM derivitative) processors, like the ones that frequently power tablets and phones.
    2. The x86 Windows 8 devices are backwards compatible with stuff designed for Windows 7 (and Windows Vista, and some Windows XP stuff).  So they'll run itunes, etc..
    3. The ARM version of Windows 8 devices is only compatible with stuff designed for Windows 8 specifically, usually sold through the Windows 8 store and displayed as a tile on the main screen once purchased (The major exception being Microsoft Office, which can run in desktop mode).  This is because stuff designed for Windows 7 and before was compiled for x86 processors, an ARM processor doesn't know what to do with it.
    3. Your Surface RT device is powered by an ARM processor, so you have no backwards compatibility.
    4. Itunes is right now compiled only for x86 processors, and those will only work with Windows 8 machines with x86 processors, which you don't.
    5. Apple may or may not decide to release a version of itunes that's compatible with the ARM version of Windows 8 (frequently referred to as Windows 8 RT).  We just don't know, because they haven't said that they will or they won't.  Right now there is no compatible version.
    6. So your options are to use music software that is compatible with Windows 8 RT (I am guessing it comes with some version of Windows Media Player), wait till Apple comes out with a version of Itunes for Windows RT (Which it may or may not do), or return your Surface RT and buy a more traditional laptop with an Intel or AMD processor instead (The version of Windows 8 that can run on those chips can do itunes in desktop mode).
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  I can see where this would be a little confusing.  Microsoft probably should have given it's ARM-based operating system a name other than "Windows".

  • Photoshop CC 2014/Intuos tablet causing PS to freeze, HELP!!

    Hi folks,
I've recently run into a serious issue that has stopped my workflow in its tracks. It has to do with some bizarre incompatibility issues between Photoshop CC 2014, Wacom Intuos tablets and Windows 8.1. I do not exactly know which one of those is the culprit, so here are some details.
The issue occurs whenever I use any keyboard shortcut involving the control key (step backwards is the big one) and the brush tool at the same time. If I try to make a brush stroke before fully releasing the shortcut keys (especially longer brush strokes), Photoshop completely freezes. It stays frozen until I move the stylus far away enough from the tablet that it no longer detects hovering; after a moment, the program will begin to function normally again. This doesn't ALWAYS happen; it seems to be more common when working in a document with many layers. If I open a new blank document, I can't get the glitch to work at all, but if I create a stack of layers with a few brush marks in each, the glitch can be reproduced easily almost 100 percent of the time.
    Some more details:
-It happens with all Intuos drivers currently available via Wacom, including the ones on the legacy drivers page.
-The glitch is ONLY present in Photoshop CC 2014, not in older versions. However, I do not wish to roll back because I am working on a Surface Pro 3 and want to be able to pan and zoom using touch, which was only introduced in this version.
-It happens on all computers running Window 8/8.1, as well as the Windows 10 Technical Preview (I work for a tech company and have access to all varieties of test machines). Curiously, it does not seem to occur in Windows 7. I am able to reproduce the glitch immediately on every non-Win7 machine I install PS CC 2014 on. However, I require Windows 8+ for its touch-friendly features on the Surface.
-The glitch happens with (seemingly) all Intuos tablets, not just my Intuos 3 tablet. I actually purchased a new Intuos 4 from Best Buy to see if that would resolve the issue, but it persisted exactly the same.
-It does NOT occur when drawing on the screen with the N-Trig pen that came with my SP3 -- it ONLY occurs when using a Wacom tablet.
    And here's the big one:
-De-selecting "Use Windows Ink" under the "mapping" tab in my Intuos settings causes the issue to go away entirely, but also disables pressure sensitivity, so this is not a viable option.
My suspicion is that this is some weird incompatibility between Photoshop CC 2014 and the Windows Ink API (my understanding is that this version of Photoshop ditched the old Wintab API for Windows Ink). Hopefully it will be ironed out in a future PS CC update.
In the mean time, does anybody have any ideas? I'm also posting at some Photoshop forums, but I figured someone here might be able to help. This is driving me absolutely up the wall.

You fail to mention which Wacom Intuos and which Wacom drivers have installed.  I do not have your problems on my Windows 7 Workstation or my Surface Pro 3 Windows 8.1  with the Intuos Pro with Wacom version 6.3.11w3 device driver.  I have no problem using Shortcuts like undo and redo or using my intuos gestures for them here is my PS system info for my surface Pro 3
